Architecture and Society in the Early Historic Times
Alexandros Mazarakis-Aenian
The article examines the evolution of the architectural forms of
houses in the broader Helladic area during the Protogeometric
(11th century - 900 BC) and Geometric period (900 - 700BC) in
connection with the social changes that have occurred in this pe-
riod and up to the appearance of the city-state. In the Protogeo-
metric years the simple, unified and elongated type of house pre-
vails, displaying rooms in array, the one next to the other, while
the differences between the dwellings of the elite and those of
the common inhabitants of a settlement are quite obvious. In the
Geometric era these differences are minimized and in several
areas the residential units become more complex, comprising
many buildings in an enclosure, which form a more compound
and independent house. In the early phase of the urbanization
and the creation of the city-state the architectural plan of the
houses changes and becomes more complicated: the numerous
dwelling spaces are organized around a central courtyard or a
spacious shared passage, permitting the differentiation of their
use and of the activities of their occupants.

Amvrakia: The Residence in the Archaic Period
Georgia Pliakou
Amvrakia, the present-day Arta, was founded as a colony of the
Corinthians at the southern end of Epirus in the last quarter of
the seventh century BC. The general lay out of the city, repeating
the organization model of the colonies, divided the land in por-
tions of equal size. The town-planning scheme thus created pre-
sented a grid of parallel streets that were framing rectangular res-
idential blocks. The houses of the archaic period are built in a
standardized plan and belong to two major types also known
from other colonies of mainland Greece and Magna Grecia. In
the first type, which is very common both in metropolitan Greece
and in Magna Grecia, two or three rooms are aligned to the north
of a spacious courtyard, while in the second one, more usual in
Amvrakia, a large chamber is added between the rooms and the
courtyard. Typical characteristics of the archaic houses are the,
more or less, similar plan and the careful and meticulous build-
ing. The architectural articulation and the household of the
dwellings contributed to identifying its major rooms with the living
quarters of the family and the andron that was purposed for the
male occupants. The spacious chamber was functioning as stor-
age room and also sheltered the looms of the house. The finds
discovered so far ascertain the close relations of Amvrakia with
the metropolis of Corinth as well as the developed commercial
contacts of the colony with Athens and other cities during the
sixth century BC.

Ancient Leucas and Its HousesManuel Fiedler
During the eighth and seventh centuries BC Corinth founded a
dense network of commercial stations and colonies along the
coastal area of the Ionian and Adriatic See and thus established
its dominant position in the West. The first to be colonized was
the island of Corfu in 734 BC and almost a century later followed
Leucas, Anactorion, Amvrakia and Apollonia, Epidamnos/Dyrrha-
chion.
The colony of Leucas on the homonymous island was
founded on the narrow neck of the hardly 600 meters wide sea
passage that separates the island from the mainland region of
Aetoloakarnania in order to supervise and control the maritime
trade passing through the canal. Built at the foot of a hill range
and extending on the plain that reaches the canal coast, the city
was divided in an upper mountainous settlement with two acrop-
olises and a big theater and a lower flat one, where most of the
population lived.
The excavations carried out in the city of Leucas in the 1980s
have brought to light the foundations of a house dating from the
early phase of the colonization, that is from the first half of the
sixth century BC. The original remnants of the house are not sat-
isfactorily preserved, since various buildings have been erected
on the spot in the centuries that followed. None the less, certain
characteristics of these surviving remains supply interesting in-
formation on the architecture, construction methods and every-
day activities prevailing in the colony as well as on the overall so-
cial profile of the period.

Household Archaeology at Halieis
Bradley A. Ault
This paper offers an overview of the domestic architecture re-
covered at Late Classical Halieis. These 4th c. houses are among
the best preserved of that date in the Hellenic world, and as such
stand as important examples in the known repertoire of Greek
private architecture. In considering their forms and functions, the
houses at Halieis demonstrate many similarities with Late Classi-
cal housing elsewhere, particularly at Olynthus, and look forward
to developments in Hellenistic housing documented at sites like
Eretria and Delos. Such commonalities are taken as evidence for
the existence of an established koine of private architecture which
existed across the Greek world, similar to the formalized vocab-
ularies for public architecture, whether sacred or secular in na-
ture. The presence of insular, single-entry courtyard houses with
recessed prothyron entries, south-facing porticos, andrones set
apart from oikos cores containing kitchen-bath complexes, and
a whole range of shared architectural cues and syntax, elabora-
tions and representational elements, support the participation of
Halieis in a wider phenomenon of Hellenicity characteristic of
the age. In the houses at Halieis, as elsewhere, we see the private
realm interpenetrating with the public, the male world integrating
with the female sphere, and the domestic micro-economy form-
ing an integral link with the political macro-economy.

allithera: The Organization of Urban Space in an
Ancient Settlement
Babis G. Intzesiloglou
The study of the organization of a small peripheral settlement, the
name of which, therefore its identity, remains unknown is most
unusual. Such a case, however, is the ancient settlement at
Kallitheron in Thessaly, in the region of Karditsa. A part of the set-
tlement happened to lie in the boundaries of the present-day vil-
lage and it is due to erection of modern houses that it was dis-
covered and excavated. The settlement was founded in the last
quarter of the fourth century BC, was destroyed by fire in the 220s
BC and was partially restored later. The walls encircle a limited
area that comprises flat land on the north and east side of the set-
tlement and the calcareous hill of Hagios Athanasios on the south
and west. Several parts of streets have been discovered inside
the walls, among which the better-preserved central one, the
wide road that crosses diagonally the north sector of the settle-
ment. They indicate that the residential blocks did not have a reg-
ular shape, the settlement lacked an underground sewage sys-
tem and the rainwaters were gathered in sewer pipes that, cross-
ing the walls transversely, were directing them far from the settle-
ment. Only parts of houses have been revealed so far. They dis-
play an inner courtyard with a wooden stoa running at least across
one of its sides, baths with earthen bathtubs, small temples of in-
dividual devotion furnished with figurines and censers, seals with
religious representations purposed to stamp the bread used in
worshiping rituals and ample storage rooms full of earthenware
jars that would preserve liquid and solid eatable provisions. The
houses discovered so far are single-storied, they have walls con-
structed with a podium at their lower part and a sun-dried brick
masonry above it, roofs covered with regular tiles, many of which
are stamped with their manufacturers name, which are inter-
rupted by a proper tile aperture permitting the smoke of the hearth
to pass through. Kilns of pottery workshops have in addition been
discovered at the west part of the settlement.

A Real Treasury: The Re-documentation of the Berlin
Collection of Bronzes
Norbert Franken
The article presents the project of scientific and iconographic
documentation of the original nucleus of the Berlin Collection of
Bronzes as it had been compiled up to the year 1871. The docu-
mentation was based on Carl Friederichs model catalogue Gerthe
und Broncen im Alten Museum (1871). The project was realized
in the Berlin Collection of Antiquities, to which the Collection of
Bronzes belongs, from 2004 to 2007. During the inventory, doc-
umentation and digital photographing of the collection, bronze
items considered until recently lost came to light and were iden-
tified, while those that were destroyed in World War II or stolen by
the Soviet troops were surveyed. The image database thus cre-
ated is published on the Web along with the full text of Carl
Friederichs catalogue (Bilddatenbank Friederichs, www.smb.mu-
seum/friedrichs). The bronze works acquired from 1871 to 1945
will be documented in the next phase of the project.

Arta: The Transformations of an Urban Landscape
Afendra Moutzali
The city itself creates and dispenses with historical memory. The
ancient settlement of Amvrakia is succeeded by the middle
Byzantine town, then the capital of the Despotate of Epirus is cre-
ated to become later an Ottoman urban center. The present
name of the city, Arta, is mentioned for the first time in 1082 the
city. Different cities thrive, the one after the other, in the same
space, however, in various periods. Its earlier, former substruc-
ture and formation have greatly influenced the continuity of its
function. Presently, the landmarks of Arta are the Byzantine
churches of Parigoritissa, Hagia Theodora and Hagios Vasileios,
the latter situated in the vegetable market; the Castle, greatly sig-
nificant for the medieval and modern history of the city; the leg-
endary bridge, the Feyzoul and Imaret mosques and the Zorbas
mansion.

Ios: a House Reflexion of History
Maria Georgiadi
Our knowledge of ancient societies is enriched by the study of pri-
vate houses. Recent example is the dig of Skarkos on the island
of Ios, where new light is shed on the Cycladic settlement of 2700-
2000 BC. In the same island inhabitants have been living since
Mycenean times to our day in a fortified settlement on the top of
the hill from where it is possible to survey the large natural port. It
is the Castle of the Ios Town. There a perfectly restored house
represents six centuries of History. The faade, built with materi-
als some of which come from windmills, testifies for a society of
agriculturers. It is known that such immigrants have been brought
to the island from 1579 and on. The main reception-room, high
and large, is representative of medieval princely house such as
those built by the Venitians of the Duchy of Naxos which were
also rulers of Ios. It could belong to rich mariners such as the pi-
lots of Ios, known to be among the best of the Aegean.
