100 Ամեակ

Ազգովին կը նշենք մեր պատմութեան եւ կեանքի ամէնէն պանծալի «Յարութիւն»ներէն մէկը՝ Հայաստանի Ա. Հանրապետութեան 100 ամեակը, որ իրականացաւ 28 Մայիս 1918-ին։ Միայն պիտի նշե՞նք, թէ՞ պիտի մասնակցինք։

Նշել` կը նշանակէ յիշել պատմութիւնը, ուրախանալ եւ վերարժեւորել։ Սակայն մասնակցիլ կը նշանակէ՝ այդ յաղթանակին մաս կազմել եւ այդ նոյն յաղթանակին ջահը կրելու եւ բարձրացնելու պարտականութիւնը ստանձնել։

Պահ մը դիտենք Մայիսեան անկախութիւնը. հրաշք է։ Հայոց Ցեղասպանութեան մահացու հարուածը ստանալէ ետք, դարերու երազը իրականցնել, պետութիւն եւ անկախութիւն կերտել, միայն երեք տարիներ ետք, հրաշք եւ կամք բառերը կրնան նուազագոյն ձեւով նկարագրել։

Հաւանաբար, կարելի է յաղթանակ կերտելը, սակայն, յաղթանակը պահելը՝ կրկնապատիկ ճիգ եւ զօրաւոր կամք կ՚ուզէ։ Այդ է մեր այսօրուան մարտահրաւէրը։

Անցնող ամսուան ընթացքին, Հայաստանի մեր երիտասարդ հայրենակիցները, օրինակ եւ դաս եղան ամբողջ աշխարհին եւ յատկապէս՝ մեզի, հայերուս։ Հաւաքական կամքի եւ հաւաքական զոհողութեան միութիւնը տեսանք եւ զգացինք, մեր մայրենի հողին վրայ։ Սփիւռքի զաւակներս, նոյն արեան, նոյն պատմութեան եւ նոյն տեսիլքին պատկանող սերունդներն ենք։ Մեզի եւս թոյլատրելի չէ նուազ զոհողութիւն եւ նուազ կամքի միութիւն ցուցաբերել մեր ազգին, մեր Եկեղեցիին եւ

Ինչպէ՞ս կրնանք Մայիսեան յաղթանակի ջահակիրները ըլլալ Սան Ֆրանսիսքոյի Հայ Գաղութիւն մէջ։ Նուազագոյն մասնակցութիւնը որ կրնանք ցուցաբերել Մայիսեան անկախութեան յաղթանակին հանդէպ՝ գործօն մասնակցութիւն եւ քաջալերանք ցուցաբերել Մեր Եկեղեցւոյ եւ Գաղութի բոլոր կազմակերպութիւններու ձեռնարկներուն, յայտագիրներուն՝ ներկայութեամբ, թէ կամաւոր աշխատանքով։ Իբրեւ Սան Ֆրանսիսքոյի Հայ Գաղութ, մեր ներկայութիւնը եւ մեր աշխուժութիւնը պէտք է ապացուցենք եւ զգացնենք, միշտ եւ բոլոր ժամանակներուն։ Պէտք է ամբողջական մասնակցութեամբ, ապացուցենք, որ մենք հրաշք յաղթանակ կերտողներու ժառանգորդներն ենք։ Պէտք է ապացուցենք, որ մենք ՀԱ՛Յ ենք։

100th AnniversaryCollectively, as a nation, we are celebrating one of the most glorious

victories in Armenian History; the 100th Anniversary of the first republic of Armenia which was realized on May 28, 1918. On this very special occasion, we shall ask ourselves: How do we partake in this victory, beyond celebrating it? Celebrating means remembering the history by joyfully appreciating the achievement; however, participating means actively partaking in the process of safeguarding the continuation of this Independence for the coming generations, and passing down the torch to them. If we observe the details of this independence in terms of timing, we will see that it is nothing less than a miracle, especially given that it took place only 3 years following the Armenian Genocide. During the past month, our youth and compatriots in Armenia gave us all the best example of how to practice democracy successfully. We witnessed and heard about the peaceful demonstrations and the selfless unity and sacrifice of a vigilant nation, our Armenian nation, for a brighter future. This is nothing less than the revolution of proactively securing and safeguarding the brighter future of our Motherland, Armenia. We, the generations in diaspora, have the same faith and sense of belonging, the same vison and willpower. Therefore, our joint efforts will only result into a prosperous Armenia, a progressive and healthy society and culture. Together, we are the guardians of our Church and our Motherland. In the diaspora, we feel empowered by you, and our survival as a nation is dependent on our collaborative efforts. How can we be the frontrunners in passing down the torch of our Armenian identity here in the Bay Area? The least we can do is to actively participate in all Community events at large in celebrating this 100th anniversary of our first republic, Armenia. As Armenian members of the greater Bay Area Armenian, we shall all support our sister organizations by the various means at our disposal, by volunteering and spreading out the word of our achievements, at this time and always. Only our active participation and engagements in such endeavors can secure and guarantee our existence as heirs of the Armenian National treasures. This is how we can prove that we are truly Armenian. Dear compatriots, join us in holding this torch up high. There is no better feeling than being victorious as an Armenian national. Happy Anniversary blessed Armenia! Happy Anniversary beloved compatriots!

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

The annual Church Membership meeting of the year 2017 was held on February 25, 2018, at the Vasbouragan Hall, next to the church, at 2:30pm. After the opening prayer of wisdom by our Pastor, Very Reverend Father Barouyr Shernezian, the Executive of the meet-ing was elected: Garbis Bezdjian, Chairperson; and Deacon Sevag Badoyan as Secretary. Mr. Kaloust Hagopian attended represent-ing the Central Executive Board of the Western Prelacy. The election of the Resolution Committee took place with the fol-lowing members elected: Noubar Demirjian, Zareh Samurkashian, and Manuel Mekhjian. Since the annual reports of the Pastor, Board of Trustees, KZV School reports were sent previously to all the members, they were not read at the meeting. However the Ladies Auxiliary report was read. Questions, discussion and evalu-ations followed. Next on the agenda were the elections of the new Board. Board of Trustees election resulted in the following six candi-dates elected: Hilda Basmajian, Jeanne Hartunian, Rostom Aint-ablian, Vicken Kabajouzian, Vahan Derounian, and Zareh Sarkis-sian for one year. Nominating Committee elected: Zareh Samurkashian, Yedvard Misserlian, and Harout Momjian. Auditing Committee elected: Vartan Demirjian, Armand Kili-jian, and Krikor Kizirian Thereafter the minutes of the meeting were read by Secretary, Deacon Sevag Badoyan, and were approved and ratified. Closing addresses were given by Representative Kaloust Hagopian, and Chairperson of the Tivan, Garbis Bezdjian. With thanks to all who participated in making the past year a successful one, Very Rev. Fr. Barouyr Shernezian offered the closing prayer, and the meeting concluded at 6:00 pm.

LADIES AUXILIARY ELECTIONSOn March 12, 2018, the Ladies Auxiliary held their annual elec-tions and the following members were elected to the new execu-tive: Chairlady, Ano Chakalian; Vice Chairlady, Hasmig Bou-daghian; Secretary, Hasmig Der Manuelian; Treasurer, Armine Mekhdjian; Assistant Treasurer, Jasmik Sanassarian; Advisors: Seta Saad, Lucik Sarkissian, Arax Sarkissian, and honorary mem-ber, Arax Sarian.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES FIRST MEETINGOn March 13, 2018, the Board of Trustees held their first meeting. After verification from the Prelate and Western Prelacy Executive Council, the following members of the Board elected their execu-tive: Chairman, Rostom Aintablian; Vice Chairman,Ara Archoun-jiani; Secretary, Vahan Derounian; Treasurer, Hovsep Pilavjian. Գրիգոր Լուսաւորիչ Եկեղեցւոյ Անդամական Ընդհանուր ժողովին՝ հոգաբարձական ընտրութենէն գոյացած հոգաբարձական կազմը, Անադամական ժողովի Դիւանին հրաւէրով, իր առաջին նիստը գումարեց՝ Երեքշաբթի, 13 Մարտ 2018-ի երեկոյեան ժամը 7:30-ին, «Գռուզեան-Զաքարեան-Վասպուրական» վարժարանի ուսուցչարանին մէջ։

CHURCH FUNCTIONS

ST. GREGORY’S LITTLE CHURCHOn Sunday, November 5, 2017, we had the greatest pleasure of the attendance of twenty-five youngsters of St. Gregory’s Little Church attending our Divine Liturgy with their parents and teachers. Our very special thanks to our volunteers, Alla Veribian, Edit Khachatourian Slater, Marina Azizian and Tamar Badoyan. The “little church” continues successfully throughout the year. All children are welcome from 3 years of age to 8. Please call the church office for further information.

HOMENETMEN AWARDSOn Sunday, November 19, 2017, immediately following the Divine Liturgy, seven Homenetmen Scouts of the Bay Area received an award of small silver crosses blessed by Rev. Fr. Barouyr Shernezian after a three day retreat and religious program in preparation of receiving the revered St. Mashdotz badge.

CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTINGAt 6:30pm on December 1, 2018, at St. Gregory Armenian Church we held our annual Christmas tree lighting and decorating our church. Forty young children and family members attended this festive event with happy wide-eyed youngsters with their letters to Santa in hand, ready to mail to the North Pole. A very happy event. Hot chocolate, and cookies were enjoyed by all. Our thanks to Jirair Moughamian who was Santa’s helper that evening.

ARMENIAN CHRISTMAS EVEOn Friday evening, January 5, 2018, we celebrated Armenian Christmas Eve. At 5:00 pm our Acolytes: Vana Ekmekdjian, Aleck Andonian, Narek Aristakessian, Jacko Oskanian, Anna and Marian Gevorkyan, Vana Kasparian, Melina Nazarian, Sophene Panossian, Arek Aristakessian read from the Holy Scriptures. This has become an annual tradition, and all our acolytes read fluently and meaningfully in Biblical Armenian. Congratulations to all of them. Thereafter, Very Rev. Fr. Barouyr Shernezian celebrated the Divine Liturgy at 5:30pm, and Holy Communion was given to all parishioners.On January 6, 2018, our church overflowed with parishioners who had come to pray and celebrate the birth of our Lord. Morning hour service was held at 10:00am and Christmas Divine Liturgy began at 11:00am followed by the

Տօնածառի ԼուսաւորումՏարեկան աւանդութեան վերածուած այս ձեռնարկը, յատուկ խանդավա-ռութիւն ստեղծած է համայնքիս մեծ ու փոքր անդամներուն մօտ։Դեկտեմբեր 1-ին, քառասունէ աւելէ փոքրեր իրենց ծնողներով ու հարազատներով հաւաքուեցան «Վասպուրական» սրահ, զարդարելու եւ լուսաւորելու՝ եկեղեցւոյ տօնածառը։ Այս առթիւ, ներկաներուն հրամցուեցաւ քաղցրեղէններ եւ «հաթ չաքլէթ» տուրմէ խմիչք։ Այս ուրախ մթնոլորտը իր գագաթնակէտին հասաւ Կաղանդ պապայի օգնականին ժամանումով։ Ան եկաւ, որպէսզի փոքրիկներուն նամակը տանի եւ հասցնէ՝ Հիւսիսային բեւեռ։

blessing of the water, and the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ. The readers of the day were little Daron Nazarian and Aita Artashessyan who spoke with great confirmation. Godfather of the Cross was Aram Archouniani, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ara and Jacqueline Archouniani, who held the cross devotedly and proudly during the service.

We were truly blessed this year as two young deacons from Toronto, Canada, joined us by serving at the Holy Altar with Hyre Soorp; Deacon Vartan Gabrielian and Deacon Sarkis Kidanian. Their voices and energetic spirit enlivened the Liturgy.

On Sunday, January 7, 2018, we were invited to a very special Christmas concert which included the beautiful bass-baritone voice of Vartan Gabrielian, accompanied by talented Vatche Jambazian at the piano, who performed a vitally varied program which ranged from “Hayastan” – Mozart, “Autumn Leaves,” “The Christmas Song” and “The Lord’s Prayer”.

CRAB NIGHTOnce again, “Crab Night” was a terrific success! Over 300 people, young and old, families and friends gathered together at the Saroyan Hall to enjoy an “all you can eat” crab feast on February 2, 2018, organized by the Ladies Auxiliary. Six hundred fifty pounds of fresh cracked crab were generously served. In addition they had the choice of spaghetti, chicken, salad, and tiramasou dessert. Totally delicious and unending crab filled the tables. All are looking forward to next year’s crab night.

Պատարագին։ Այս օրուան Առաքելական Թուղթը կարդացին՝ Տարօն Նազարեանն ու Անիթա Արտաշէսեանը։ Աւարտին, ներկայ հաւատացեալները ականատես եղան Քրիստոսի Մկրտութեան յիշատակը խորհրդանշող ջրօրհնէքին։ Ջրօրհնէքի կնքահայրն էր՝ Արամ Արչունեանի, որդին՝ Տ/Տ Արա եւ Ժագլին Արչունեանիներուն։

LENTEN SEASONThis year Lenten Season started on February 12, 2018 and lasted until Easter Vigil Services on March 31, 2018. Thereafter, Huskoum, Evening Prayers were held every Friday evening at 7:00 pm at St. Gregory Church. There was a short lecture on religious topics after the evening prayers.

DIARN-UNT-ARACHOn Monday, February 13, 2018, we commemorated the Feast Day of Dirarn-Unt-Arach (the presentation of our Lord, Jesus Christ to the temple) with an Evening Hour of Prayer service at 5:30pm. With the attendance of our Homenetmen Scouts, K.Z.V. Armenian school students and teachers, and community children they were brought to the church to be presented to the Holy Altar. Hyre Barouyr circled the children around the Holy Altar with special prayers. At the conclusion of the Prayer service, all went to the courtyard where the traditional bonfire was lit. Many who attended jumped gaily over the fire. Afterwards pizza was served to all the children at the Vasbouragan Hall.

GOMIDAS THROUGH MUSICOn March 2, 2018 we had the great pleasure of a program on the life and music of Gomidas Vartabed, which was presented by Very Rev. Fr. Torkom Donoian, the Vicar General of the Western Prelacy, on his first trip to the St. Gregory Church Parish.On the Sunday following the lecture, Hyre Torkom Donoian celebrated the Divine Liturgy and delivered the Sermon.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYEROn Saturday, March 3, 2018, under the direction of Nanor Sadakian, we celebrated The World Day of Prayer at St. Gregory Armenian Church with the participation of members of the Armenian Bay Area Churches. It was a moving day of prayer, prepared by the committee of Suriname. Testimonies, scripture readings, and theme song “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” were part of the program. V.R. Father Barouyr Shernezian welcomed and introduced V.R. Father Torkom Donoyan who delivered a stirring message. After the singing of Der Voghormia, and Hyre Mer, the afternoon day of prayer came to a close. Annig Zindarsian accompanied at the organ.

Խեչափառի ԵրեկոյԿազմակերպութեամբ Ս. Գրիգոր Լուսաւորիչ եկեղեցւոյ Տիկնանց Միութեան, Ուրբաթ, 2 Փետրուար 2018-ի երեկոյեան ժամը 7-ին, «Խաչատուրեան» Հայ Կեդրոնի Սարոյեան Սրահին մէջ տեղի ունեցաւ, տարեկան աւանդութիւն դարձած՝ «Քէֆ Նայթ»ի թեմայով խեչափառի ճաշկերոյթը։ Գրեթէ 300 հոգինոց բազմութիւն մը ներկայ էր այս ճաշկերոյթին, որոնք հաճելի ժամանակ անցուցին։

There was a luncheon hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Gregory, following the church service and program. All those in attendance enjoyed a musical program during this luncheon. EPISCOPAL DIVINE LITURGY The Feast Day of our Patron Saint, St. Gregory the Illuminator’s descent into the pit, was celebrated on Sunday, March 18, 2018, with an Episcopal Divine Liturgy celebrated by H.E. Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate of the Western Prelacy, who also delivered the Sermon that day. Following the Divine Liturgy, the congregation, in procession, went to the church courtyard where the Hokehankist took place along with the blessing of the Madagh (memorial offering) which was prepared by the Ladies Auxilary. After the blessing, everyone joined in and sang “Giligia”, “Mer Hairenik” and Hyre Mehr. The Madagh was then served and shared by all who attended. A luncheon hosted by the Parish Pastor and newly elected Board of Trustees followed at “Vasbouragan” Hall with the participation of parish family members and representatives of sister organizations. In attendance were parish delegates, new Board of Trustees, Ladies Guild members, Krouzian-Zekarian-Vasbouragan School Principal Mrs. Grace Andonian and School Board Chair, representatives of the ARF “Krisdapor” and “Sardarabad” Gomidehs, ARS, and Homenetmen, sponsors and friends. His Eminence congratulated the new Board of Trustees, expressed hope that all sister organizations in the Bay Area continue to work together for the advancement of the Church and community, and wished continued success to all in their dedicated service.

Համաշխարհային Աղօթքի ՕրՇաբաթ, 13 Մարտ 2018-ին, առաւօտեան ժամը 11-ին, Ս. Գրիգոր Լուսաւորիչ եկեղեցի ժամանեցին մեծ թիւով հաւատացեալներ, որոնք մաս կը կազմեն Համաշխարհային Աղօթքի Կանանց միութեան ու յանձնախումբին եւ անոնց յարակից եկեղեցիներու ծխական համայնքին։ Այս առթիւ, Գերապատիւ Տ. Թորգոմ Ծ.Վրդ. Տօնոյեան օրուան պատգամը փոխանցեց ներկայ հաւատացեալներուն։ Հոգեպարար աղօթքի այս ձեռնարկի իր խօսքին մէջ, Հայր Թորգոմ շեշտեց աղօթքի կարեւոր դերին եւ տեղին մասին։

PALM SUNDAYOn Palm Sunday, March 25, 2018, we celebrated the victorious entry of our Lord into Jerusalem. The twin readers of the day were: Anna and Maria Gevorgian who read to the delight of all, very energetically. Our church was beautifully decorated with huge palm branches and olive branches on each entry and on the Holy Altar. The traditional procession took place outside the church. All the parishioners followed the Hyre Soorp, Deacons, Altar Boys and choir members, young children and parents in joyous song in this special event. The pretty decorated candles for the children were prepared and donated by the Ladies Auxiliary. At the conclusion, chocolate Easter eggs were given to all the children.

EASTER WEEK Holy Thursday: Divine Liturgy began at 12:00 noon. In the evening, at 6:00 pm the Washing of the Feet Service took place. This year, Fr. Barouyr dedicated the washing of the feet to the new fathers in the community in appreciation to their devotion and dedication to their families. This service was moving, especially because the church was filled with young families and children of this happy occasion.Thereafter, the evening prayer of the ‘Betrayal’ took place at 8:00pm. A large group of faithful arrived at church to partake in the traditional and spiritually uplifting service. 7 Gospels were read, depicting the story of Christ’s Passion. Holy Easter Eve: Saturday, March 31, 2018Before Divine Liturgy, students from our Krouzian, Zekarian,Vasbouragan Armenian School participated in the reading of the Holy Scriptures at 5:00 pm. Those who read were: Zepyur and Vana Kasparian, Sophene Panossian, Melina Nazarian and Nourai Ekmekjian. After the readings, the Divine Liturgy began at 5:30pm and lasted until 7:30pm. On this day, Hyre Soorp read His Eminence Archbishop Mardirossian’s Easter message in lieu of the sermon.

Կրէյս Անտոնեան եւ Ուսումնական Մարմինի ատենապետը, Հ.Յ.Դ. «Քրիստափոր» եւ «Սարդարապատ» կոմիտէութեանց ներկայացուցիչներ, Հ.Մ.Ը.Մ-ի եւ ՀՕՄ-ի վարչութեանց անդամներ, «Խաչի Յանձնախումբ»ի ներկայացուցիչը, բարերարներ եւ բարեկամներ։ Մտերմիկ զրոյցի ճամբով արծարծուեցան գաղութը յուզող հարցեր եւ մարտահրաւէրներ, տարուած աշխատանքներ եւ մասնաւորաբար այս տարուան մեծ տօնախմբութեան՝ Հայաստանի Ա. Հանրապետութեան 100-ամեակի յոբելենական հանդիսութեանց առնչուած ծրագիրները։ Առաջնորդ Սրբազան Հայրը գնահատեց միութիւններուն աշխատանքները։ Ան շնորհաւորեց նորընտիր հոգաբարձութեան կազմը, յոյս յայտնելով, որ Սան Ֆրանսիսքոյի եւ ծովածոցի միութիւնները իրենց անսակարկ ծառայութեամբ նոր իրագործումներ ձեռք պիտի ձգեն ի սպաս Հայ Եկեղեցւոյ եւ հայ գաղութին։

invited all parents and children to join in for an Easter Celebration with the Easter Bunny, Clown, snacks and music. Even an Easter egg hunt was one of the surprises of the afternoon!

On Easter Morning, April 1, 2018, over 300 parishioners attended Holy Easter services. Blessing of the Harvest took place in the church courtyard after the Divine Liturgy. And throughout the afternoon, greetings of “Christ Has Risen From the Grave” were given to each other.

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE COMMEMORATIONOn April 24, 2018, the parishes and communities of the Armenian Bay Area Churches; St. Gregory, St. John, St. Vartan, St. Andrew, and the Calvary Congregational, commemorated the 103rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide at the Mt. Davidson Cross at 7:00pm. A special “Madagh” Supper was prepared and shared. The Homenetmen Scouts presented the flag ceremony followed by the National Anthems. The Homenetmen Scouts, the Krouzian, Zekarian, Vasbouragan Armenian School and the St. Gregory Hovsepian Armenian School of Pasadena participated in this program. Intercessory Prayers were then offered for the sanctified Martyrs of the Armenian Genocide by the Armenian Clergy, a candlelight Vigil and moment of silence followed. Then the community gave flower offerings.

Պատարագի խորհուրդի հիմնադրութիւնը հանդիսացող «Վերջին Ընթրիքի» Սուրբ Պատարագին։ Իսկ երեկոյեան ժամը 6-ին, Հայր Պարոյրին նախաձեռնութեամբ, Ոտնլուայի արարողութեան իրենց մասնակցութիւնը բերին՝ ծխական համայնքիս նոր հայրերն ու «հայրանալ»ու ճամբուն մէջ եղող խումբ մը երիտասարդներ, պատուելու եւ յարգելու իրենց ընտանիքներուն հանդէպ անոնց ունեցած նուիրումը։ Աւելի ուշ, «Խաւարման» արարողութեան մասնակցեցան՝ աւանդապաշտ ծխականներ։ Սրտայոյզ արարողութեան աւարտին, «Ուր ես Մայր իմ» շարականն ու ոգեշնչող քարոզը, նոր առիթ մը ընծայեցին ներկայ հաւատացեալներուն, խոկալու եւ հոգեպէս պատրաստուելու Սուրբ Յարութեան։

Պատարագի արարողութիւնը։ Այս առթիւ, Հայր Սուրբը ընթերցեց Առաջնորդ Սրբազան Հօր Զատկուան Պատգամը։ Աւարտին, հաւատացեալները մոմերով երգեցին Ս. Զատկուան «Այսօր Յարեաւ» շարականը։

ԶատիկՔառասուն օրերու պահեցողութենէն ետք, Կիրակի, 1 Ապրիլի առաւօտուն, համայնքիս հաւատացեալ հայորդիները հասան եկեղեցի, հաղորդուելու համար օրուան խորհուրդով եւ միասնաբար բացագանչելու «Քրիստոս Յարեաւ ի Մեռելոց»։Քարոզի պահուն, Հայր Պարոյր ողջունեց ներկայ հաւատացեալները Շնորհաւորելով անոնս Ս. Զատիկը եւ մաղթելով զիրենք եկեղեցի տեսնել յարաջիկային եւս։ Ս. Պատարագը աւարտեցաւ «Այսօր Յարեաւ» շարականով ու Հայր Սուրբին «Պահպանիչ»ով։
