  • Connie Reeves sprouted in Schenectady, New York, was repotted at age 7 in Tyler, Texas, and again three years later in Louisville, Kentucky. Refusing to become rootbound, she replanted herself at DePauw University School of Nursing. Upon graduation, she signed up with the Army Nurse Corps at Fort Polk, Louisiana where she met her future husband and real superman, Bill. (Not to be confused with George or Christopher, mere actors in the role.) Moving to the St. Louis area after her three year commitment was over, Connie and Bill finally let their roots grow deep; they still live in the same home they bought in 1974.

When Connie retired from nursing in 2006, she turned to a new type of care-giving. Free to pursue her lifelong interest in trees, that same year she took the Treekeepers course offered through St. Louis Community College. She started volunteering at Forest ReLeaf tree nursery when it was located near the airport. Connie, along with 4 or 5 retired gentlemen, nursed along the little seedlings before the operation moved to its current location, where, she says, “it has expanded by leaps and bounds! There are so many friendly, knowledgeable volunteers who work there now! And we have always had wonderful foresters and staff to teach and guide our efforts, as well...I am most grateful for all I have learned and the great volunteers I work with through this most important environmental organization!” Forest ReLeaf is grateful for Connie, too. She is our longest-serving active volunteer and we tip our wide-brimmed sun hats to her. In addition to her book club, her walking group, and Road Scholar trips, Connie also sings in her church choir and helps with preschool vision screening. We are sure they are equally grateful for her talents; let’s hope we don’t have to compete with them for her. Thank you, Connie!

CommuniTree Gardens Nursery continues to thrive thanks to dedicated staff and volunteers! Nearly 300 volunteers clocked over 5,600 hours cultivating over 20,000 young trees. The process starts when we receive seedlings from the Missouri State Nursery in Licking, Missouri. The Missouri Department of Conservation generously donates these to Forest ReLeaf every year. Volunteers pot and care for the seedlings until they are large enough to survive in an urban environment. Throughout the year, our staff and volunteers water, weed, prune, and check trees for disease before various nonprofits and community groups pick up the trees for planting.

2018 Nursery Highlights: • Our greenhouse was filled to the brim as we continued to increase wildflower propagation.• Planning for a new pollinator garden at CommuniTree Gardens Nursery continued.• Volunteers collected seed from 66 native species trees and plants, 31 of which will be used in the new pollinator garden adjacent to the prairie.• Three beehives were added to a fenced in area in the prairie to educate about pollinators.

Project CommuniTree continues to distribute trees for planting projects in parks, at schools, for restoration, and more. Beyond growing and distributing trees, Forest ReLeaf is committed to the long term health of the region’s urban tree canopy.

Forest ReLeaf was able to purchase a second truck in 2018 because of a generous donation from John and Cathy Milton. This truck is used primarily for watering newly planted trees that will most easily succumb to underwatering. So far, the truck has enabled us to plant and water trees alongside roadways, such as I-64 and the cloverleaf exchange at I-64 and I-270. In addition, we have used it to water trees from recent tree planting projects in St. Louis.

ReLeaf SalesReLeaf Sales makes trees available for purchase for planting on private property. This program raises critical funds to support tree giveaway programs. In 2018, 168 trees were sold for 38 tree planting projects, and 1,007 wildflowers were sold.

Hundreds of Trees Planted in the City of St. Louis Each year, Forest ReLeaf plants many trees within St. Louis City. In 2018, the St. Louis Office of Sustainability secured generous support from The Funders’ Network, Missouri Department of Conservation, the William A. Kerr Foundation and the Commerce Bank Foundation that enabled us to bring multiple parties together to build community and plant trees. Several variables were considered in selecting the four park planting locations, including existing tree canopy and trees lost due to the emerald ash borer infestation, incidence of crime and other demographic factors.

First responders, including the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the St. Louis Fire Department, were brought into the planning process early on and participated in the planting process. Together with St. Louis City Parks, Recreation and Forestry, Forest ReLeaf identified tree species and planting locations for two projects in the spring and two in the fall, planting 300 trees in Minnie Wood, Marquette, Barrett Brothers and Fairground Parks with the help of neighbors, community leaders and first responders.

Tree Camp: Forest ReLeaf hosted its first ever Tree Camp in 2018! With the help of volunteers, a six day program was planned for 5th and 6th graders that taught basic tree biology and identification as well as the relationship between trees and other organisms. Six campers attended and were led through five themed days covering trees, birds, pollinators, and outdoor skills. On the sixth day, kids showed their families everything they learned and gave a tour of the nursery. It was a huge success and we are excited to grow the camp in future years!

Tree Tenders: As part of a grant in partnership with the City of St. Louis, Forest ReLeaf hosted an eight week summer employment program for six teens. Tree Tenders assisted with greenspace projects and gained an interest in forestry-related jobs. Forest ReLeaf hired an intern to lead the crew on projects including mulching and watering trees at Sublette and Fairground Parks, removing inva-sives at O’Fallon Park, clearing brush at Greenwood Cemetery, and learning from the horticulturists at Bellefontaine Cemetery while clearing debris from a storm. Teens participated in a basecamp and career summit with the Green Teen Alliance, whose goal is to grow the future of the green workforce by engaging youth from historically marginalized communities in environmental work.

TreeKeepers: Every year, Forest ReLeaf offers a free five week class to educate citizens about trees, their benefits and care, and provide practical, hands-on learning in several key areas: identification, biology, soils, planting, and pruning. No prior experience is required and graduates provide 24 hours of volunteer service to Forest ReLeaf or in forestry-related projects. 53 people participated and many of them have continued volunteering with Forest ReLeaf.

“My son absolutely loved Tree Camp! He learned so much

while having a great time. On our last camping trip he even used his new skills to identify

some trees and do some bird watching!”

The Missouri Forestkeepers Network is administered by Forest ReLeaf of Missouri in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation and is an opportunity for all Missourians–urban and rural–to get involved in understanding and gaining important information about the condition of trees and forests. As of 2018, this program has a total 2,648 members. These volunteers survey tree health twice a year and reported over 12,000 hours of activities associated with forests and woodlands. The Forestkeepers Conference was held at the Giving Grove, a nonprofit in Kansas City dedicated to improving local food security and strengthening communities by bringing together resources to develop edible gardens. A new website was launched in partnership with the Forest and Woodland Association of Missouri that offers comprehensive information, and simplifies reporting.combines resources and makes reporting easier.

    Missouri Forestkeepers Network

In 2016 the Missouri Community Forestry Council (MCFC) adopted a big goal: plant one million trees by the end of 2020. Leading this effort, Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, with funding from Missouri Department of Conservation, contracted with Plan-it Geo to develop a GIS-based web tool for plotting trees in Missouri. Tree planters across the state can easily enter the location and several details about the species and planting event simply by clicking a few buttons on plantmotrees.org.

The Communications Committee from MCFC has created a statewide marketing strategy and enlisted the support of “ambassadors” from various groups, including municipal foresters, university grounds superintendents, nonprofits and Tree City USA Tree Boards. All trees distributed by Forest ReLeaf are being plotted in this database too. To learn more or plot your newly planted trees, visit plantmotrees.org

A Conservation Celebration honoring Forest ReLeaf of Missouri’s 25th anniversary was held on October 28, 2018. Magnificent Missouri served as the major sponsor for the event, where nearly 200 guests gathered at Third Degree Glass Factory to celebrate Forest ReLeaf’s accomplishments since its founding in 1993. The party featured live music from Los Gatos, barbeque from Pappy’s, side dishes prepared by Corki Moller and dessert potstickers from The Crispy Edge.

Three organizations that have played significant roles in Forest ReLeaf’s success were honored at the event: Missouri Department of Conservation, St. Louis Parks, Recreation & Forestry, St. Louis County Parks and Ameren Missouri. In addition, representatives from partners including the Forest and Woodland Association of Missouri, Missouri Community Forestry Council and Trailnet were on hand during the party.

Board member Sheila Voss created beautiful thumbnail watercolor sketches of 25 of the species of trees grown by Forest ReLeaf. The original artwork was framed and auctioned during the event and copies used for posters and sets of notecards provided for guests.

During the brief program, a surprise donation of $7,000 was presented to executive director, Donna Coble. The Great Forest Park Balloon Race organization designated Forest ReLeaf as the recipient of proceeds from its recent event!

Forest ReLeaf thanks Dan & Connie Burkhardt, John & Corki Moller for co-chairing the party and to committee members Mara Berry, David Dresner, Joni Ott, Gordon Schweitzer and Sheila Voss for making the 25th anniversary a memorable celebration!

On April 28, Forest ReLeaf staff, volunteers and community members gathered in Fairground Park in north St. Louis to plant the 200,000th tree since our inception in 1993. Community Forester, Tom Ebeling, planted the bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) while demonstrating the proper technique for planting and mulching trees. Volunteers then broke into groups and planted an additional 100 trees in Fairground Park!

Fairground Park is especially significant as it is also the site of where Forest ReLeaf planted its 50,000th tree, a red maple (Acer rubrum), on November 9, 2004. For many years, Fairground and many other City Parks have been a focus for restoring the St. Louis urban tree canopy and a great way to build community through the simple act of planting a tree.

  • Forest ReLeaf hosted the second annual Concert in the Trees on May 31, 2018. Music lovers gathered to watch a performance by the Hulapoppers among over 20,000 trees that are growing at Commu-niTree Gardens Nursery. Board member John Moller and his wife Corki, prepared a dinner of chili and various side dishes for our guests. Our Young Friends committee ran a beer tent and served beer donated by Urban Chestnut Brewery and wine from Bethlehem Valley Winery. Attendees also participated in nursery tours and learned more about Forest ReLeaf’s tree giveaway programs.

At the peak of Missouri’s July heat, Forest ReLeaf’s Young Friends’ Committee convened for their annual Weeding Happy Hour event. Hundreds of young trees were weeded to ensure that they did not have competition from weeds for valuable resources including water and sunlight. This event also brings many new Young Friends to CommuniTree Gardens for the first time and educates them about the process of growing the trees, and the wide variety of native Missouri species that are available. After weeding, the group enjoyed a nacho potluck and beer.

Trees on Tap at Earthbound BeerTo kick off Forest ReLeaf’s 25th Anniversary, we partnered up with Earthbound Beer to create a special anniversary beer! Community Forester Tom Ebeling gathered cedar branches and turned them over to Earthbound Beer to brew a Cedar Gose. On July 25, friends of Forest ReLeaf gathered at Earthbound’s beer hall to enjoy the ReLeaf Cedar Gose, participate in tree identification games, and raise money for our tree giveaway programs. A huge thank you to Earthbound Beer for hosting!

ArborMeisters Homebrew FestivalThe 6th Annual ArborMeisters Homebrew + Craft Beer Festival was held on October 7 at Com-muniTree Gardens Nursery. Homebrewers picked their favorite tree ingredient to incorporate into their brews. Ingredients included maple syrup, spruce tips, French oak tips, juniper and more! The winning brews came from Forest ReLeaf’s own Liana Kopp with her Servicebeery and, for the sec-ond year in a row, Eric Smith of St. Louis Brews Homebrew Club with his Blue Hawaiian Milkshake featuring pineapple. Live music was performed by Cole Blue Steel and attendees toured the nurs-ery. ArborMeisters was sponsored by Bellefontaine Cemetery and Arboretum, Brewer’s True Value Hardware, Alpine Shop, Earthbound Beer, Renewal by Andersen of St. Louis, Schlafly Beer, St. Louis County Parks, and PRP Wine International - St Louis.

Crawl the GroveThe Young Friends Committee hosted the 7th Annual Crawl the Grove pub crawl on December 8. Over 100 participants met up at Urban Chestnut in the Grove before continuing on to O’Shay’s, Gezellig, Handle Bar, and an afterparty at Atomic Cowboy. Crawlers received a hoo-rag and food and drink discounts, and helped raise over $3,000 for Forest ReLeaf! Crawl the Grove helps increase awareness of Forest ReLeaf’s tree planting and maintenance initiatives and other educational programming.
