What's New \

^>U«f;^i^*fJiit?t:4jfeli^MjlnHt.^iriM Zygmond Mayer brought the meeting to order at 9:00A.M.. 5/28/94. The first issue brouglit up was the matter of a petition to officially change the month of the State Open to J u n e in order to avoid confUct with Mother's Day. Universities graduation ceremonies and Memorial Day weekend. Alter some discussion, this was voted down and several other similar ideas were offered, with a majority finally endorsing the idea of planning aU future Montana State Opens for tlie weekend before the Memorial Day weekend.

The MCA treasury report was not presented, mainly because there wasn't enough time, but for the tjenefit of those wishing to know the raw details. MCA had S870.00 at the 1993 State Open and S I 0 9 8 . 0 0 at the 1994 State Open. MCA membership bounces around 80 paying members average, and the membership dues provide about S480.00/yr . E a c h newsletter costs about S70.00 1S29.00 stamps (about 100 newsletters go out. we recently gEiined 12 new members, so the figures are never really staticl. S28 .50 printing costs and about S I 0 . 0 0 personal expenses - gas money, etc. I have the newsletters printed up in Miles City.) S ix newsletters cost about 8420.00. so MCA dues cover the cost of the newsletters (if. of course, everyone remains up-to-date.) and a little more. The State Open generates about S200 -300 for the treasury.

The second i ssue d i scussed was time controls used in MCA Grand Prcc events, resulting in a majority of those present voting to require MCA Grand Prix events to have a time control no faster than 30/90 . G / 1.

MCA ofiicers were then elected : President: Da\1d Duke. Vice President: J i m SkovTon. Eastern VP: Paul Arnot. Western VP: Michael J e n s e n . Secretary/Treasurer: Les BrenuEui.

Next, Michael Long otTered a new idea for the format of the State Closed, to wit: a ten man Swiss. The majority of those present were enamored of the thought and voted it in. And that's all there was time for. Whew!

MEMBERS* F O R U M : Outre! That is the reaction some members are having to the news of the new State Closed tbrmat. II you would like to talk to the members atxjut what you feel will or won't work regarding the State Closed, or Einy other MCA matter, please feel free to use the newsletter. Any letters addressed to MCA membership (absent of offensive languagel will be included in a section called "Members' Forum". Please try to keep letters reasonable in length.

^^22SSSi23H2S522B^B Dear members, the MCA Board of Directors wants your opinion. Next year's Montana State Closed will be expanded from a six person round-robin to a ten person Swiss . The memtiership p r e s en t^^ it the annua l bus iness meeting decided that the MCA board members should determine how to fill tiie lour newly^P

created positions. The present system of qualifying for the Closed Is as follows:

1. The reigning State Champion is automatlccdiy seeded.

2. The top two finishers in the MCA Grand Prix are seeded.

3. The top three Montana resident finishers in the State Open are seeded.

Since there will now be four new seeds, one solution would be to seed the State Champion, the top four MCA Grand Prix finishers and the top five finishers from the State Open. Another solution would be to emphasize MCA Grand Prix participation by seeding the State Champion, the top five MCA Grand Prix finishers and the top four finishers from the State Open.

The Board of Directors will vote on August 14. 1994 (The week before the first MCA Grand Prix tournament in BUlings). We welcome your input. Including any new and creative ideas on how to quality the four new places In the Montana State Closed. - David Duke

of those qualified for the Closed will not be able to make it.
