Shota, Kumi and Kevin, a boy from New York, are classmates. Kevin came to their high
school last April to learn a lot of things about Japan. He is interested in Japanese culture.
One day he got an *envelope from the school office. There was a green mark on it and he
wanted to know more about it. So he showed the envelope with the mark to Shota and Kumi.
Kevin: Just have a look at this. What’s this mark?
Kumi: Ah, it’s the symbol of Tokyo.
Kevin: Oh, I see. It’s Tokyo’s symbol. Now I remember. I often see it, for example, on the
buses, on the *subway trains . . . .
Kumi: And also on the *manhole covers. Did you know(1)
that?Shota: Really? I’ve never seen any manhole covers with this symbol.
Kevin: I haven’t, either. I want to see one with the symbol.
Shota: If you keep looking down, you will get into trouble.
Kevin: But why does it have this *shape? What does it mean?Kumi: I believe it is a *leaf of icho. How do you say icho in English, Shota?Shota: Sorry, I don’t know. Let’s see the dictionary. Let me see . . . here it is. It is called
“gingko” in English.
Kevin: Ah, gingko! Yes, I see many gingko trees in Tokyo. The fresh green ( 3-a ) were
really beautiful in early summer. Weren’t they?
Kumi: Yes. There is a street near my house and a lot of gingko trees stand *in a row along
it. The green ( 3-a ) look so fresh and beautiful every year. In fall they turn yellow
and *shine *beautifully in the sun. I love that bright color.
Kevin: So this big city chose the gingko leaf as its symbol.
Shota: Wait a minute. I think I heard another story about this green symbol. Yes, this
symbol looks like a gingko leaf, but you see, it also looks like an English *letter.
Kevin: Hm. . .well . . . it looks like . . . the letter T.
Shota: Right! I have heard that this mark is the T of Tokyo.
Kevin: Wow, that’s interesting! It is T and looks like a gingko leaf at the same time. It is a
good design. When you see it, you think of Tokyo.
Kumi: So it’s the symbol.
Shota: Gingko is the tree of Tokyo, just like the cherry tree is the tree of
Japan.

Kevin: Ah, cherry trees! Yes, when I see cherry blossoms, I will always remember Japan.
But of course, there are many other ( 3-b ) that *recall Japan.
Kumi: What are they?
Kevin: For example, Mt Fuji, Himeji Castle, kimonos, anime and comic books. Ah, yes! I
believe many anime characters are the symbols of Japan now.
Shota: I agree! They are popular in the world, too.
Kumi: Do you know any other interesting symbols?Shota: I think the symbol of the Olympic Games is also a good example. Do you know what
those five rings *represent?Kumi: I believe the five rings show that people in different countries should be ( 3-c )
through sports. People should have close *ties, just like those connected rings of the
symbol.
Kevin: Actually the rings represent the *union of five *continents ― Africa, North and South
America, Asia, Europe and *Oceania.
Shota: Maybe we can put our ( 3-d ) in a symbol, *although the world isn’t really like that.
Kumi: Ah, yes. The f ive rings, the symbol of the Olympic Games, *at
least show us the importance of peace in the world. Many people will think of working
toward(4)
that goal, when they see the symbol.
Kevin: Then maybe this gingko mark also shows our hopes. Tokyo will have more and more
green trees in the future and become a nicer place to live.
Shota: A symbol can send a message to people without using ( 3-e ) .
Kumi: And people can understand what it means better!

I like to look at pictures, especially *Picasso’s works. He was born in Spain in 1881
and became a famous *painter in the world. I his works since I was a child.
When I have time to walk around, I often visit art museums. One day I went to a museum
to see Picasso’s works. One of my favorite pictures was there and I enjoyed looking at it. I
bought some picture cards for myself at the gift shop in the museum. That night I had a strange
dream.
In the dream I was alone in a house by the sea. I was looking out of the window. The
sun was *setting over the sea. I heard only the sound of the *waves. Then I noticed a man.
He was walking along the beach. He stopped and picked up a *stick on the beach and began
to draw something with it in the *sand. I got my *binoculars and looked at the *drawing he
was making in the sand. I was ( 2 ) . It looked like one of Picasso’s pictures I looked at in
the museum. Then I looked at the man’s face. I was ( 2 ) again. The man was Picasso!
After a while he finished drawing in the sand, smiled and walked away.
I knew the waves were coming. I thought the waves would wash the drawing away soon.
I wanted to stop the waves. (3)
I wanted to keep the drawing forever. I tried to(4)
( a photo /

I was not able to do anything, and the waves washed it away.
This is just a story from my . But the story impressed me very much. I
thought about the story again and again after I *woke up. I couldn’t understand why he smiled
when he finished drawing. He knew his drawing would disappear, but he kept drawing in the
sand *anyway. I wanted to keep looking at it forever, because it was a very exciting work of art
for a person who loved Picasso.
We know there is a *limit to everything, even art. But sometimes we want to refuse to
believe it. I still remember a chorus contest in my high school days, because it was an exciting
event. We practiced a lot and my class performed very well. When I was singing, I didn’t
want to stop that wonderful moment. We didn’t get a *prize, but I was very happy, because I
really enjoyed the event.
When I found the performance would not *last forever, I could see more *clearly where the
importance of the performance really was. When I was singing, I could feel the energy from
our voices. Even after the contest ended, the feeling was still with me. Even now I feel happy
when I remember the contest. I think the *process is important. In my dream Picasso just

enjoyed drawing in the sand. Maybe he didn’t *care about how the drawing was going to be
after he finished it. I enjoyed looking at the drawing, too. I cannot see the drawing any more,
but I can keep the moment in my mind forever. The importance of art is in experiencing the
moment. (6)
Now I understand the meaning of Picasso’s smile.
