Many of New York Citys old Slavic neighbor-hoods may be on the decline, but the Slavic spirit was very much alive last week. There was a Slavic Book Exhibit, a Slavic Fine Arts Show and a Slavic Folk Dance Festival... There are estimated to be more than 1.5 million people of Slavic descent living in the New York metropolitan area... The Slavs make up the largest ethnic group in Eu-rope of the Indo-European linguistic family. They include Poles, Czechs, Slovaks and Sorbs in the West, Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Bosnians and Bulgarians in the South, and Russians, Ukrainians and Byelorus-sians in the East... Emil Antonoff, a trustee of the multiethnic radio station WHBI, said: Theres definitely a revival of the Slavic spirit today. We feel more Bulgarian, more Croatian, more Slovak than ever before. Mr. Antonoff established Slav-ic broadcasts at the station in 1962. Now there are programs in Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Slovak, Polish, Lithuanian, Ukrainian and plans for one soon in Russian. Our main role is to keep the traditions and language of the old country alive but we also provide new immi-grants with information about life in America, said Mr. Antonoff, who fled Bulgaria in 1956.
