The History Department Female Section

IntroductionHistory department at Womens Centre for humanity faculties of King Saud University offers an undergraduate programme of Bachelor of Arts in History as well as a Master of Arts (MA) and a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. The History department was established in 1957, at the time of the inauguration of King Saud University. It opened its doors for women in 1962 by correspondence as there was no section opened for women only yet. It was not until 1974 women were admitted fully to the department for undergraduate degree as well as for Masters simultaneously with opening the Women's campus for humanity faculties that year. Since then it was always in Ulaysha, in the west of Riyadh. The PhD programme started in 1985. As one of the earliest departments opened for women, most of women pioneers in the working market were history graduates.
Brief Overview

The principal objective of the History department is to train young women & men to learn about their history and what and how they contributed to the human civilisations following the scientific methodologies and critical thinking in assessing the events and thoughts. The scope of history is not exclusive to the Islamic and local histories but also covers the Old world and part of the New world in ancient, medieval and modern periods to have a better understanding of the Others. The major specialities of History department are 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ancient History Islamic History European History Modern and Contemporary History History of the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf.
The History department at the Women's centre is for female students only, however, they can follow some courses taught by men through the closed-circuit TV. Since 1995 postgraduate supervision and viva were also conducted through closed-circuit TV.

The department's members are active not only on the level of the university but also are engaged in cultural, humanity, human rights, social activities nationally and internationally, which opens the department to many sister department in the world. One of the main challenges facing History department perhaps is the rise in unemployment rate among humanity graduates, therefore, the department is launching many plans to revive and revise its curriculum and strategies in order to encompass more training and skills acquiring and technology interaction. We hope that this will prepare a more qualified historian woman to build up a career for herself. The Number of female students for the year 1428/1429 2007/2008 is 557 students. Number of Faculty Members (of the same year): 1 Full Professor, 3 Associate Professors, 10 Assistant Professors, 4 Lecturers, 5 Professor Assistants, and one Secretary.
