When can is not stressed, the vowel is weak, shown as /ə/.

Hannah: Now, Anna, tell me about yourself. Let’s start with films. Why do you want to come to the LAC?

Anna: I love the cinema. It’s magic. But I don’t just want to watch films. I want to be in them!

Hannah: Really? You want to be an actress then? Can you dance? Anna: Yes, I can dance quite well. I go to modern dance classes on Wednesdays

and Saturdays. Hannah: Good. You’re ballerina too! Can you play any musical instruments? Anna: No, I can’t play music at all but I can sing really well. My singing teacher says

I’ve got a great voice. Hannah: What about languages? Can you speak any foreign language? Anna: Yes, I can. I can speak French. And I’m learning Italian. Hannah: Really? Other interests or hobbies? Annan: I like making clothes and I enjoy taking photographs. I’m doing photography

Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS)

Directions: 1. Get in pairs.

2. Get two pieces of conversation card.

3. A student is a coach who checks a partner’s reading, and circles the words that the partner mispronounces.

4. The other is a reader who read a conversation to the coach.

5. Take turn. When both are done reading, recheck the result of your reading by comparing to the original conversation.
