Turkey has ‘no more tolerance’ for vio-lent protest, Prime Minister Erdogan toldthe parliament. He was speaking as policeused water cannons and tear gas to takeover Taksim Square in Istanbul from anti-government activists.

Erdogan lashed out at the protesters ashe was addressing MPs on Tuesday. In hisspeech he separated the peaceful protest-ers concerned with the development plansat Gezi Park from those in Taksim Square,who he said are responsible for violentclashes with police forces.

The prime minister blamed the Taksimprotesters of injuring security troops,damaging public property, disturbingpublic order and damaging Turkey’simage among international investors.

Erdogan’s speech came hours afterhundreds of police walked into TaksimSquare just after dawn and used tear gasand water cannons to fend of protesters at-

tempting to enter it. Police removedprotest banners from buildings overlook-ing the square. The prime minister hailedthe move, which he described as tearingdown “rags”.

Clashes erupted in the streets sur-rounding Taksim Square, while the policetook over part of the square by marchingin large formation and then driving outthe remaining protesters by rounds of teargas.

USA Calls On Its Citizens To Refuse VisitingTurkey

Washington, D.C. - This week, Presi-dent Barack Obama nominated SamanthaPower to be the next U.S. ambassador tothe United Nations (U.N.), reported theArmenian Assembly of America (Assem-bly). Power previously served as SpecialAssistant to the President and Senior Di-rector for Multilateral Affairs and HumanRights at the White House. SamanthaPower is the Pulitzer Prize winning au-thor of "A Problem from Hell": Americaand the Age of Genocide (2002), which ex-tensively covers the Armenian Genocide.

Reflecting on the conception of theidea to universally ban genocide, Powerwrote: "If the international communityever hoped to prevent mass slaughter ofthe kind the Armenians had suffered, heinsisted, the world's states would have tounite in a campaign to ban the practice.With that end in mind, Lemkin had pre-pared a law that would prohibit the de-struction of nations, races, and religiousgroups."

In her 2007 article in TIME Magazineentitled " The U.S. and Turkey: Honesty isthe Best Policy," Power wrote about theArmenian Genocide at the hands of the"Young Turk" regime, the birth of the termgenocide by Raphael Lemkin, and thelitany of excuses proffered by the govern-ment of Turkey in their decades-longstruggle to deny the Armenian Genocide.

While making her case for U.S. recogni-tion of the Armenian Genocide, Powerunambiguously presented her view that"a stable, fruitful, 21 st Century relation-ship" with Turkey "cannot be built on alie."

"She showed us that the internationalcommunity has a moral responsibilityand a profound interest in resolving con-flicts and defending human dignity,"Obama said when announcing SamanthaPower's nomination. "To those who caredeeply about America's engagement andindispensable leadership in the world,you will find no stronger advocate forthat cause than Samantha," the Presidentadded.

Senate Armed Services CommitteeRanking Member John McCain (R-AZ) re-leased a statement in support of Power'snomination. "I believe she is well-quali-fied for this important position and hopethe Senate will move forward on hernomination as soon as possible," McCainsaid.

In 2002, Power provided critical guid-ance to the International Center for Tran-sitional Justice (ICTJ) regarding thedefinition of genocide and the question ofthe applicability of the U.N. The second instalment in the Pro-gramme of Armenian Studies’ Towards2015 series - a programme of lectures andother events commemorating the Armen-ian Genocide - sawDr U!ur Ümit Üngör ofUtrecht University deliver a lecture on theissue of the Genocide in memory. Theguests were greeted warmly as they en-tered by the Programme ofArmenian Stud-ies’ founder and director, Dr. KrikorMoskofian, and after an impressive intro-duction by Ara Sarafian, Dr. Üngörlaunched into the lecture.

Specifically, Dr Üngör was addressingthe discrepancy between the official historytouted by the Turkish state and the per-sonal memories of those Turks, Kurds andArmenians who were alive at the time, andthose to whom they have told their stories.He started by saying that the ‘memorywars’ - the intellectual battles betweenthose who would expose the genocide andthose whowould rather forget it - that char-acterise the relationship between Armeniaand Turkey were reminiscent of those be-

tween Bosnia and Serbia, and were an es-sential characteristic of all genocides. Theanimated Dr Üngör then proceeded tomake a swift analysis of the Turkish state’spolicy of denial; from the destruction of ar-chitecture, books and forensic evidence onone hand, to the construction of (false) offi-cial histories in school textbooks and aca-demic institutions, it is clear that the controlof memory is crucial in the promotion ofthe denialist agenda. The gist of Dr Üngör’stalk, however, was that in order to get to thetruth of the events of 1915, we must look tooral history, to the first- and second-handaccounts of those who remember what hap-pened, be they perpetrators, survivors orwitnesses.

WhenMr. Sarafian opened the floor forquestions, there were, predictably, manymembers of the audience who wanted toshare their ownmemories and experiences.The questions, when they were finallyasked, were relevant, but because of the

While vacationing in Turkey, the Amer-ican son of a powerful U.S. Senator acci-dentally parasails into the neighboringcountry ofArmenia. Mistaken by local gov-ernment officials to be a Russian spy, theman is mercilessly interrogated by his cap-tors until a beautiful female student breaksthrough the language barrier and comes tohis aid.

Convince someone along the lines ofDaniel Craig or Clive Owen to take the leadrole and you've got the makings of a globe-trotting political thriller. Cast third-rate co-median Jamie Kennedy, though, and youend upwith `Lost and Found inArmenia,' abroad, silly, dated and insensitive mistakeof a movie co-written and directed by GorKirakosian.

`Lost and Found' resembles those low-brow, one-joke comedies Pauly Shore usedto crank out near the end of his film career,just to stay employed - something like`Jury Duty' or `In theArmyNow.' Kennedystars, but themajority of themovie leans onamixture of Russian,Azeri-Turkish andAr-menian performers speaking in their nativetongue.

As a result, `Lost and Found' reliesheavily on subtitles. Unfortunately, readingthe film's immature jokes doesn't makethem funnier.

Kennedy plays Bill, a senator's sonwhose heart recently was broken by a girlwe never meet. His best friend, George(Dave Sheridan), coaxes him to go on vaca-tion to Turkey, where Bill is expected to for-get this shrew and start living life again. Butthe aforementioned parasailing accidentcarries our clueless protagonist toArmenia,where he contends with a village of suspi-cious peasants and eventually befriends a

beautiful college studentnamedAni (Angela Sarafyan).

Sarafyan, it should benoted, is strikingly beautiful,with an angular face and felineeyes that convey concern andempathy when she has to ed-ucate Bill on the hardships oflife in Armenia. Because she'sthe only person in Armeniawho understands English,she's tapped to be Bill's trans-

Kennedy might be the only recogniza-ble face in the ensemble, but he largely takesa back seat as `Lost and Found' wasteschunks of time on the cartoonish physicalantics of theArmenian townsfolk. GrandpaMatsak (Mikael Pogosyan) acts as thetown's inept interrogator, prone to shoutingat Kennedy or hitting him with a boot.Ahmed (Serdar Kalsin) is the camouflage-sporting village leader, who views himselfas the local dictator and suspects Bill asbeing part of a larger espionage scheme.

These aren't characters. They are one-note spoofs of cookie-cutter `foreign' stereo-types even Yakov Smirnoff would dismissas tedious. The last time this style of hack-neyed cultural humor generated significantbelly laughs, episodes of `Hogan's Heroes'were an audience's only options. Fortyyears ago, Peter Sellers might have beenable to squeeze laughs out of this tone-deafmaterial.

But we've evolved, both as a society andas an audience. Specifically, we've seenSacha Baron Cohen eviscerate imbalancedinternational relations in bitingly sarcasticcomedies such as `Borat' and `The Dictator.'By comparison, `Lost and Found' isn'tquaint. It's obsolete.

Turkey, which sees the allegations ofgenocide as a threat to its national honor,meanwhile, says the killings were not in-tentionally perpetrated to eradicate a par-ticular ethnicity but were the result of thewartime conditions during World War I.Turkey also notes that both Muslim andnon-Muslims died during the event.

The leader of the world's 1.2 billionCatholics said in a meeting with three Ar-menian religious functionaries who visitedhim at the Vatican on June 3 that the firstgenocide of the 20th century was carriedout onArmenians, according to a report inthe Armenian Weekly posted on June 5.

`The first genocide of the 20th centurywas that of the Armenians,' Pope Franciswas quoted as saying when one of the

The statement by Pope Francis is seenas a reiteration as he had earlier recognizedthe so-called `Armenian genocide' while heheaded the Catholic Church in BuenosAires as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio.

The pope, while serving as archbishopof Buenos Aires, in 2006 recognized andalso urged Turkey to unconditionally rec-ognize the alleged genocide as the `gravestcrime of Ottoman Turkey against the Ar-menian people and the entire humanity'during a ceremony that marked the 91stanniversary of the 1915 events.

According to the report, the statementby the pope is the first such statement fromthe pontiff since being elevated to popeand leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

- The last time I was in Armenia was 5years ago. Now I see a lot of changes. Thefirst thing that attracted me during thesedays, was the Armenian young people. I

do not know, maybe during my previousvisit I missed something, but this time I seefresh, bright and young atmosphere inYerevan. Five years ago, there was no vi-vacity in the streets of Yerevan, the citywas not so crowded. Now your city hasbecome a multi-color, younger, new build-ings are being built …. And it’s not acci-dental that I’m talking about youngpeople, because the mood in every coun-try is reflected among the youth. – Are youfond ofAram Khachaturyan’s music. Whatattracts you most in those works. – I likeromantic music. And Khachaturyan’sworks simply touch your soul and heart,make you become a dreamy. – You’re coming from the royal family.Taking into into account all luxury andbenefits of the status, are there momentsthat you have to sacrifice.

- More precisely, I am from the rulingfamily, because having aristocratic roots, atthe same time I have seen a lot of difficul-ties. From time to time, my family has lostlands because of the war and has to starteverything all over again. I think the mostimportant thing is to preserve the tradi-tions. We were brought up to the ideologythat we should be proud of our family, par-ents and traditions. To have a good educa-tion has a great role in this issue. And agood education is not only a problem ofmoney because now there are the bestchances for it. We have to think from theprospective that we can change the world.My hope is the youth, and there are brightyoung people in Armenia. I’m feeling

good in your country. Armenians are veryhospitable, your national dishes are sotasty. And the monuments … I visited amonastery that was located on the borderwith Azerbaijan, the mountain top. – Have you heard about the ArmenianGenocide held by the Ottoman Empire inthe early of 20th century and what is yourposition on this issue?

- I have heard about it and read much.And I think we should constantly talkabout it and move the process of recogniz-ing and condemning the crime forward.We must fight and condemn one of theworld’s most tragic events of the 20th cen-tury. I do not know how I can help, but themost important thing for me is to talkmuch about the fact, and to find ways onhow to bring the culture and problems intoour framework. In every way, we must notlet such a thing happen again. And onlythrough good education can withholdmankind from such tragic phenomena.

New, but still very weak hints that in-dicate increased pressure from the interna-tional community have appeared in theKarabakh settlement process as there is anincreased probability of “normalization ofrelations” without actually resolving theconflict.

Chairman of the State Oil Company ofAzerbaijan Rovnag Abdullayev made asurprise announcement last week, sayingthat if Armenia asks,Azerbaijan can supplyit with natural gas. After this sensationalstatement, representative of PresidentIlham Aliyev’s administration said that assoon asArmenia asks for such a favor, Bakuwill immediately advance its conditions.However, he did not deny the possibility ofeconomic cooperation.

So far, relations between Armenia andAzerbaijan on the economic and humani-tarian levels have been nonexistent. Whilethe father and predecessor of the currentpresident, HeydarAliyev, would less inter-fere with communication between the twocountries, while still avoiding economic co-operation, his son Ilham reduced it to zero,choosing to build his policies on Armeno-phobia.

As a result of these policies, Armeniafound itself in greater isolation from re-gional projects. But most importantly, West-ern countries had to build more expensiveregional communications such as railwaysand pipelines bypassing Armenia.

The powers mediating in the Karabakh

settlement, the United States, Russia andFrance, have sought to persuade Azerbai-jan and Turkey to unlock the region, butevery time these two countries would ad-vance their condition – “the return of landsin Karabakh”. The Armenian side, despiteconducting negotiations, never wanted togive up even some of the territory liberatedduring the 1991-1994 war.

The recent meetings of the foreign min-isters ofArmenia andAzerbaijan with theircounterparts in Moscow and Washingtonare likely to have shifted the emphasis inthe settlement, and ways of opening up re-gional communications without a politicalsolution to the conflict are likely to besought. Purely economic goals appear to bepushed to the forefront.

Former U.S. Cochairman of the OSCEMinsk Group and ex-Ambassador to Azer-baijanMatthew Bryza does not hide that hesupports the idea of linking a Karabakh set-tlement (the return of lands) to the Turkish-Armenian relations (lifting of theblockade). Bryza explicitly lobbied the in-terests of Azerbaijan and Turkey, trying toget at least part of the lands back to Azer-baijan.

But this policy was not liked by the in-fluential Armenian community in theUnited States and, apparently, also to theadministration of the country, and Bryzalost his position as ambassador to Azerbai-jan where two years ago Richard Morn-ingstar was appointed as head of the USdiplomatic mission. Morningstar immedi-ately stated that energy issues were a pri-ority, without a linkage to Karabakh. And,apparently, a communication project wasoffered toAzerbaijan that suits its economicinterests.

It is not clear yet what price Armeniawill have to pay for that and whetherAzer-baijan will be able to get at least small ter-ritorial concessions from Armenia. OnceTurkey’s minister of foreign affairs talkedaboutArmenia’s ceding at least one districtin Karabakh… But even small concessionswill lead to big changes in the military-strategic balance, and most likely, Armeniawill insist on the opening of communica-tions without a change the status quo. Thequestion is whether Russia will helpArme-nia in this matter.

The polls also showed that both inAzerbaijan and in Armenia, people haveno idea how soon it is possible to achieveresolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh con-flict.

Renewed clashes between Syrian insur-gents and Kurdish groups have erupted inthe province of Aleppo and quickly spreadto other cities in northern Syria.
