In an interview published today, formerArmenian President Robert Kocharianlashed out at Prime Minister TigranSargsyan, labeling the latter’s attempts toshift the blame for the housing constructionslump on him as “mental degradation”.Kocharian described Sargsyan’s expla-

nations for the slump as “having nothing todo with reality.”Kocharian blamed the construction

slump as a direct result of the exodus oflarge numbers of citizens leavingArmenia.“Many of the apartments they leave be-

hind inevitable wind up in the secondarymarket, leading to a housing surplus. Thefall in demand and prices thus makes newinvestment in the housing market less at-tractive.”Kocharian also blamed the worsening

conditions of the country’s mortgage creditmarket for the construction slump, arguingthat less and less people are willing to risktaking out loans.“And the banks aren’t at fault. They

merely reflect the overall economic situa-tion and the problematic liquidity of realestate,” Kocharian said.The former president also pointed to

the rise in poverty levels, thus making thedream of home ownership more and moreout of reach of average citizens.Like many political analysts, Kocharian

noted that people have less faith in the fu-ture and that if given the chance 40% of thepopulation would leave Armenia.“No one intending to leave will invest

a trend toward the improvement of Ar-menian-Turkish relations.“I had spoken with the senior officials

of Turkey. These conversations led me tothe belief that as long as the figures whocontinue the Ottoman Turkey policy rule inAnkara, there are no chances for the im-

Dear Diary,Last week I was at J.F.K., shivering my

way into a taxi, en route to Park Slope. Re-lieved to be heading home, I decided not toplug inmy headphones and talk to Carl, thedriver, instead.

I gave himmy address. We talked aboutthe weather. He asked where I was from.Somehowwe got around to my parents liv-ing in Los Angeles.

Carl: “No kidding. I used to live outthere. There’s a big Armenian populationover in Glendale.”

Me: “Wait, you’re Armenian? I’m Ar-menian. Well, 25 percent. My mom’s lastname is Tutelian.” (Armenian names typi-cally end in “ian.”)

Carl: “My man!” He thrust his hand inmy direction for a shake. “Bakalian, that’smy name.”

The conversation immediately steeredtoward all things Armenian, especially

food. I mentioned that I loved lahmajun, athin-crusted “Armenian pizza” withminced lamb and spices. Carl moaned,“Ahhhh, lahmaJUN! When was the lasttime you had some good lahmajun?”

“Not for a long while,” I said.“Well you’re not going find it in Brook-

lyn,” Carl declared. “Massis in Sunnyside isit. I can bring you some.”

Me: “Seriously?”Carl: “Yeah, seriously!”Fast forward five days. My phone rings.“Come down and meet me on the cor-

ner,” said the voice. “I’m in a hurry.”I sprinted down and rushed over to

Carl’s car. The trunk is open. He pulled outtwo dozen lahmajun and handed them tome.

“This is myArmenian Christmas gift toyou,” he said. “I gotta run.”

Los Angeles, California - Having con-cluded the preliminary data analysis of theThanksgiving Day Telethon held November28th, 2013, Armenia Fund U.S. Western Re-gion is pleased to report that $22.7 milliondollars was raised globally.

Proceeds from the 16th InternationalTelethon will benefit the construction of thestrategically important Vardenis-MartakertHighway, linking the northern regions ofAr-menia and the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.The project has already commenced with en-gineering works starting as of December2013.

Thursday, December 26, 2013 is alreadya historic day for the people of Mislata andthe Armenian people. At its plenary coun-cil of the City of Mislata has unanimouslyapproved the official recognition of geno-cide and crimes against humanity carriedout by the former Ottoman Empire againstArmenians. Mislata thus became the firstSpanish city Mislata to do.

Mislata is a municipality in the metro-politan area of Valencia (Valencia Province,Valencian Community, Spain) located inthe comarca of Horta Oest.

"It is important to promote the integra-tion of all citizens in a municipality wherethe density of the highest population in Eu-rope (around 20,000 persons per km ² is thethird in the world in 2012, after Bombayand Calcutta) and comprising more than100 different nationalities, including state-less "claimed the party Esquerra Unida delPaís Valencià (EUPV) (Izquierda Unida Va-lencian section).

Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left inFrench) is a Spanish political left coalitionformed in 1986 by different parties, themost important being the CommunistParty.

The motion filed by EUPV chose theproposal of Ararat Armenian Association,which is organized around the largest Ar-menian community in Spain with morethan 300 persons and which coincides withthe 98th anniversary of the genocide.

The objective of this partnership is thatmany cities and autonomous regions make

this official recognition until 2015, whenwill celebrate the 100th anniversary of thegenocide.

While Turkey continues to deny its ex-istence, this recognition has been done bythe UN in 1984 and by the European Par-liament in 1987 and countries such asUruguay, Argentina, Belgium, Canada,Chile , France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, theNetherlands, Poland, Russia, Sweden,Switzerland, Venezuela, Vatican, etc..

It has also been recognized three au-tonomous communities of Spain (BasqueCountry, Catalonia and the Canary Islands)and 44 states of the United States of Amer-ica.

The municipality of Mislata accountsince 2010 the first memorial of theArmen-ian Genocide in Spain.

Akhatchkar (The cross of life) three me-ters high is located in L'Hort Sendra in thehistoric heart of Mislata. It is the work ofDzhivan Mzrzoyan.

It contains the main symbols of the Ar-menian culture, including Noah's Ark andthe symbol of eternity.

Mislata First City In Spain To RecognizeThe Armenian Genocide

Dear Friends of the Zoryan Institute:We take pleasure in sharing with you a

recent article by Raffi Bedrosyan, which ap-peared in the Armenian Weekly and otherpapers, entitled, “Thoughts on threshold ofcentennial.” It recommends, in essence, tak-ing Armenian history in Turkish to Turks.

It is gratifying to see him articulate sowell Zoryan’s long-term approach to en-lightening Turkish and Armenian civil so-cieties about the Armenian Genocide,through education and scholarship, as partof their shared history.

Bedrosyan explains “…the objective ofconveying to them [Turks] the historicaltruth of 1915 and its consequences, whichare still felt today. This truth is best servedwhen delivered to the people of Turkey inTurkish, based on archival material and his-toric facts—from the 1880s to 1922—di-rectly from Turkish sources and their allies,including the factual consequences of theongoing cover-up and denial by the state.”

As Bedrosyan has written, “Dialoguebetween two conflicting parties can bemeaningful only after both are aware of thetruth and the facts. Even though the Turk-ish state has not allowed the truth to comeout until recently, there are now clear signsthat the taboos about 1915 are finally beingbroken and that there is an emerging ‘com-mon body of knowledge’ among Turkishcitizens and, more importantly, among theopinion makers.”

The Zoryan Institute adopted the“Common Body of Knowledge” Project in2001 with a view to providing indisputableinformation about the Armenian Genocidein English, Turkish, and Armenian, andmaking it available to scholars and TurkishandArmenian civil societies, with the hopethat this knowledge would facilitate dia-logue between these two peoples.

In this regard, Zoryan’s efforts have in-cluded such publications in Turkish asHitler and the Armenian Genocide, the Ot-toman Military Tribunals, as well as thedocuments from the German Foreign Of-fice Archives. Similarly, as part of the edu-cational program, some fifteen studentsfrom Turkey have been sponsored with fulltravel, boarding and tuition scholarshipsover the years to participate in Zoryan’s an-nual Genocide and Human Rights Univer-sity Program. Some of these students havegone on to publish articles and books, fur-ther contributing to this “Common Body ofKnowledge” in their own right.
