This legacy of becoming great and because of it feeling even more humble is something instilled in us as an inheritance from Avraham Avinu, because the traits that the Avos acquired, were passed down to us. The Torah says “Noach was a /addik

in his time.” Rashi quotes two expla-

nations from Chazal on Noach’s sta-

tus: 1) If he had lived in the generation

of Avraham Avinu, perhaps his right-

eousness would have been greater

than Avraham’s; or 2) if he had lived

in Avraham Avinu’s generation, he

would have been considered nothing

at all.

“Nothing at all” always bothered me,

as being a /addik should certainly have some intrinsic value

– besides its relevant value to the environment of the /addik.

If that is the case, then even if Noach would have not been a

“super-/addik” in Avram’s time, why do Chazal instead say

he would have been nothing?

The Tiferes Shlomo answered this question in the following

way: Imagine if Hashem came to speak to you and to nobody

else in your generation. I suggest that we would feel im-

portant! Perhaps you would understand that Hashem is

greater than you, but you definitely would consider yourself

valuable if Hashem took the time to speak to you. We find,

however, that when Avraham Avinu pleads the case of Sod-

om, he states the exact opposite: “I know that Hashem has

spoken to me, as I am dust and ashes.” The Tiferes Shlomo

explains that because of Avraham’s deep understanding of

Hashem, he actually felt smaller and became an even hum-

bler person. This legacy of becoming great and because of it

feeling even more humble is something instilled in us as an

inheritance from Avraham Avinu, because the traits that the

Avos acquired, were passed down to us.

Noach on the other hand, to a degree, felt empowered by

Hashem choosing him to be an oracle and messenger to the

world. The new reading of the maimer chazal is as follows:

There are those who understand this in a negative fashion –

meaning, that if Noach would have been in the generation of

Avraham he would have been affected by the humility of

Avraham and considered himself nothing. But since he was-

n’t in Avraham’s generation, he had certain feelings of self-

importance.

We have just learned that we have an inborn power be-

queathed to us from Avraham Avinu that we can ascend to

great heights and at the same time become humbler. Howev-

er, I have spoken to many people, and it seems to them that it

is quite challenging to emulate this humility – it does not

come automatically. But at least we know that we have been

given the ability to succeed as a birthright, if we try because

we are Avraham’s descendants.

Baruch means Blessing The word ברוך is normally understood to mean abundance

or plenty. If someone is “blessed”, it means he has a lot

(and hopefully appreciates it) as it says it Breishis (24:1)

“And G-d blessed Avraham with everything”. The

Maharal points out (Nesiv Avoda) that the leNers of ך-ר-ב

are the three leNers whose numerical value represent

multiplicity. For those who remember math, 1, 10, and 100

are the first number in each unit level (ones, tens,

hundreds). The Gematria of the leNers of ברך is: =20כ= 2ב 200ר= . These are double the initial numbers, representing

abundance and plenty, which is what Bracha really is.

When we say ”ברוך אתה“ “Blessed are You”, we are in

essence saying that G-d is the source of all plenty and

Bracha. When we bless someone, we in essence are asking

that Hashem give them plenty.

A Chassidic explanation of the word ברך is that it comes

from the agricultural term הברכה. Havracha means

bending over a branch of a tree so that the middle of the

branch is in the ground. Over time, roots will form on the

covered part and eventually the branch can be

disconnected from the mother tree, causing “multiple”

trees.

The Chayei Adam (Klal 6) offers an alternative explanation

to what “Baruch” means. Instead of saying that G-d is

currently Blessed, when we say ברוך, we in essence are

saying that Hashem should be Blessed. This is similar to

what we answer in Kaddish – May His name be great and

blessed forever. It is as if we are blessing Hashem (even

though He doesn’t need our blessing).

Q Shimmy was trying to be ʺcoolʺ and even though he had

his siddur open to Shabbos shacharis, he kept his eyes

closed and said the shemoneh esrei by heart. That worked well

for the first three brochos, but then he continued with the next

few weekday brochos. He took a peek around him when he

got to ʺbareich aleinuʺ and when he saw everyone in their

Shabbos clothes, he realized he was saying the wrong brochos.

What should Shimmy do now? Should he stop where he is

(before saying Hashemʹs name) and start the Shabbos section

with ʺYismach Moshe,ʺ or should he finish the brocho he began

until its conclusion with Hashemʹs name and only then begin

the proper Shabbos section with ʺYismach Mosheʺ?

A Shimmy should finish the brocho that he began, even

though he did not yet say Hashemʹs name. When he

concludes the brocho properly — with Hashemʹs name — he

should then return to the beginning of the Shabbos section

with ʺYismach Moshe.ʺ

Q Eight-year-old Sruly Kagan woke up on Shabbos morn-

ing and ran to Kehillas Ahavas Tefillah so that he could

get his candy from Mr. PerlmuNer, the resident candyman.

May Mr. PerlmuNer give Sruly a candy if he knows that he

will eat it before hearing Kiddush?

A Yes. The M.B. holds that an adult is permiNed to give a

child food on Shabbos morning, even if the child will

eat the food before hearing Kiddush. Therefore, Mr. Perl-

muNer may keep his job as ʺresident candymanʺ as long as

his ʺclientsʺ (the children) are able to sit properly in shul

without disturbing others. The M.B. does not allow children

who are unable to sit properly to come to shul, as these chil-

dren will disturb others, and they will grow up believing that

it is acceptable to run around in shul and not sit properly.
