Pressure

In some cases it is better to hold off on an immediate attack andsimply see how things develop by occupying big points. On the otherhand, sometimes it is necessary to pressure your opponent as hard

as possible, without giving him a chance to catch his breath.

Page 6: לוד-הס יל לש Commented Games by Lee Sedol, Vol. 1-3: One ... · PDF fileextension to had incited this fight. In contrast to Lee Changho, my playing style is to not avoid any

Fig. 18: Black was very happy to be able to turn at . He was able to increasehis thickness in the center while pressing at White's shape. After , Whitecaptured a stone with to secure his position and stop Black from playing aladder breaker. But when Black pressed the center group with , White was nothappy.

Dia. 1: Instead of , the connec-tion at is normal. The followingmoves up to can be expected.Later Black may use moves likeA or B as ladder breakers. Never-theless, this variation looks betterthan the actual game.

Dia. 2: After , the knight’s moveat was a natural response.Playing the one-point jump at instead isn’t something a profes-sional would consider. If Whiteconnects by jumping to , Blackgains nothing and gives Whitesolid territory on the lower side.

Dia. 7: When Black plays , it’sbetter for White to answer with

. If Black captures with ,White will have sente to take thebig point at . Even if Blackplays A next, White can live withB. During the game, I didn’tanticipate Black’s extension to 1,so I missed an opportunity tochoose this variation.

Dia. 8: If Black defends the lowerside with , White can capturetwo stones in sente, as he’doriginally intended. If Black playsA later, it’s possible for White toconnect at B. In this variation,White earns about 7.5 pointsmore than in the actual game. Therefore, capturing the twostones with 3, instead of exten-ding to , is the proper move forBlack.

One day our father bought my little brother Sedol a four-wheeledbicycle. At the time, a bicycle like that was quite valuable and rare fora child in the countryside. Furthermore, it was a new model and wasvery shiny. My ‘country boy’ brother was very excited, as if he had thewhole world at his fingertips. He rode it through the neighborhood fora while, and my second brother and I sometimes pretended to pushfor him, and enjoyed following him around. When Sedol felt that hehad ridden enough, he sometimes generously lent it to his olderbrothers, but usually he fought with them to ride it.

One day my brother had gone out for a ride and came back veryupset; his bicycle was broken. On the way back home, he ran into amiddle aged lady who lived in the neighborhood. She told him thatshe wanted to ride the bicycle, took it from him, and sat on it.Because the bicycle was for a child, it could not bear her weight andit broke.

There was no place to get the bicycle fixed in the countryside, andbecause it was completely broken in two, it would not be easy to fix.We could have asked the lady to pay for the damage, but it wasdifficult because we were close neighbors. Sedol just had to let it go,but he always felt indignation and sadness about his beloved bicycle.

It is true that I usually don’t want to play the way my opponentwants me to. However, when it comes to moves that start a fight,

or threaten to fight, I want to face them and fight.

Fig. 6: This game was a battle from the beginning, perhaps you could say that theextension to had incited this fight. In contrast to Lee Changho, my playing style isto not avoid any fight that seems to be worth trying. Taking the surrounding stonesinto consideration, when White started the fight by pressing with , I didn’t see anyreason to avoid it.

After Black connected with , the reinforcement with was natural, as was .When White reinforced with , Black played the hane at to live in the corner.

Dia. 1: Extending to , insteadof in the game, isn’t a goodidea, because White will makeshape with , and then it’s hardto find Black’s next haengma. IfBlack had played at A, thecontinuation at B would beobvious.

Dia. 2: White might consider thehane at , instead of in theactual game. This move threa-tens Black’s corner. Usually would be the tesuji for attackingWhite’s shape, but it doesn’t workhere because White will play themoves up to and captureBlack’s stones in the corner.

Dia. 3: However, if Black plays and , instead of in theprevious variation, he’ll be able toconnect and White won’t gainanything. Even if White tries to cutwith through , Black will beable to capture the cutting stoneswith . Also, if White plays atA, Black will have the tesuji at B toconnect in good shape.

A Critical Stage

Close combat situations often have many complex variations, and it is not easy to read everything and find the best move. It’snecessary to examine priority moves as well as relatively easyand clear moves before all others, especially when there is a

limited amount of time.

Fig. 24: Black may think of various moves when White cuts with p, but it is nowtime to enter the last critical stage. In the actual game, Black chose the simpleand clear variation by pushing at A. He could also have considered A, B, C or D.Dia. 1: If Black pushes aheadwith ! , White can achieve agreat result simply by blockingthickly at 2. This would havebeen even better for White thanpushing at 4 directly after awas played.

Dia. 2: If Black butts his headwith ! here, 2 is the propertesuji to answer with. Next, Aand B are miai—another failurefor Black.

Dia. 3: When Black plays atariat !, countering with the atari at2 is a good response. WhenBlack goes out with %, Whitecan block thickly at A. This isn’tgood for Black either.

Dia. 4: Finally, Black has thestrong connection at ! as analternative to A . This wayinvolves difficult variations, and Ithought it through thoroughlyduring the game.

Dia. 5: After a, 1 is a difficulttesuji to come up with. Blackmust carefully consider hisanswer. Supposing Black followsup with @ and $ , White willmake huge territory with themoves until 7.

Dia. 5-1: If Black extends with! instead of @ in Dia. 5, Whitewill give Black a hard time bycutting with 2 . When Blackplays atari at #, 4 is a goodresponse and Black will be indire need of his next haengma.

Dia. 5-2: Answering a with theatari at 1 is not a good ideabecause Black can simply takewith @. Even if White connectswith 3, Black is satisfied afterthickly confiscating the singlewhite stone. White has de-stroyed Black’s territory on theright, but Black’s profit on thelower side is big, and White hasstill a weak group to take care of.

Dia. 6: In conclusion, Black’sbest answer to White’s tesuji atA is to atari with ! and breakthrough with #. After that, Whitemay cut at 4. If White cuts at Ainstead, Black can capture thetwo white stones in a ladder with B.

Dia. 7: If Black connects at %,the sequence until w is the onlycontinuation. At a glance, it looksas if Black has failed sinceWhite managed to break out. However, when Black defendsthe corner with E , the whitestones in the center will end upbeing captured on a big scale.
