Summer is officially here. You can know that because the outdoor squares in Ningbo suddenly fill up with stuff to do. The beginning of June kicked off great with The Whale Music Festival. The event at the Ningbo Cultural Plaza saw thousands of concert goers cheering for their favorite Ningbo bands.

As if that were just the warm up, the Cultural Plaza is showing no signs of slowing down. Just after that, the first China CEEC (Central and Eastern European Countries) Art and Culture Exhibtion will be underway this month. One of the two honored guests is Poland and there are reports of a Polish Poster and Stamp Exhibition. Polish graphic design is incerdibly playful and fun. Add to that the food and music festivals that accompany the entire activities that stretch for more than a week and it should be a great festival.

If parts of Western Europe were feeling left out, it seems the Cultural Plaza was planning something just in case. Fete de la Musique is a celebration of French, Chinese, and other International artists that should be excellent and wacky. The shorter festival will comprise music and art from varying places around the globe.

It's also a great month for local bands, as Exit 4 will have their album Pre-Release Party this month of June 20th. Be sure to get out and support our local music and art scene.

Back for round two is the eminent photographer and travel enthusiast Peter Morgan. This time he takes us on a whirlwind tour of Vietnam with weaves and splashes of beautiful color, stunning landscapes, and intimate portraits. Mr. Morgan spent time in Sapa which is very near to the border of Yunnan, the colors and the flavor of life there are absolutely stunning.

If getting down to Yunnan isn't on your immediate list, you can get a taste of it right here in Ningbo at Ashima Courtyard. The indoor/outdoor beautifully decorated wooden setting is tucked in the back alleys behind gu lou. The food is excellent, the drinks are cheap and the atmosphere exactly where you need to be the reap the benefits of a hot and slow summer day. It's a declious staple the Ningbo food landscape, be sure to check it out.

On the other side of the town but with a similar relaxed and approachable vibe is Cafe & Design. This coffee shop and bar is made by designers for designers. The decor has art student that grew up a little (but not too much) written all over it. It's a sophisticated space that is playful comfortable and cool. And they have a lot of kinds of ice cold vodka. Sold. Cold sold.

After you've approiately chilled out at the above two places, you may want to continue that feeling by calming way way down with some Yoga Classes from Gabriella Butarazzi.

Her column titled "Yoga &" focuses on explaining some tenets of yoga that you can bring into your daily life. This month she focuses on yoga and the breath. That life force in all of us can make or break your cool, so be sure to have a look at how to get a handle on that internal fire.

If you're feeling like a field trip, be sure to head to Hangzhou on June 12th for DISCO 86. The epic retro party will feature none other than our own DJ FREE PIZZA as well as JUNKS and other excellent and radical performances or awesomeness. Get your Blade Runner and get ready to go to the future.. in the past... that is the future. Yeah. It's a party. We should all go there in a Delorean.

And finally, we have a special entry in our Kids Section from students at Hua Mao MEA. The students were performers in an adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are. This production was close to our hearts at Ningbo Guide as we helped to make the show happen. The play was a mix of physical theater, mask performance, and dance. The show was workshopped and devised by the kids themselves over a three month period.

Irreverant and wild creativity can be in short supply at times people.

City to Offer 72-Hour Tourism Package to Foreign Tourists

To take advantage of Zhejiang Province's new 72-hour-visa-free policy, the city is developing a tourism package designed to help foreign tourists make the most of their short visit to the area. The police, which was announced last year in October, allows tourists from 51 countries, including France, Russia, the United States and more, to stay in Zhejiang Province for up to 72 hours without a visa if they arrive in China at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport.

Ningbo-Changsha High-Speed Railway Launched

The first successful passenger journey on the new high-speed railway between Ningbo and Hunan Province's Changsha was completed May 20th, marking the official opening of the new line. The new train leaves Ningbo at 6:56 AM each morning and leaves Changsha headed for Ningbo at 3:36 PM each day. The total journey takes about six hours and stops in nearby cities such as Jinhua and Quzhou along the way.

A new daily flight between Ningbo and Daegu, South Korea was put into service on May 18th. The route, which is run by OkAir Airlines, runs Monday through Friday, takes less than three hours and departs from Ningbo at 5:30 PM and from Daegu at 7:10 PM. Daegu is one of South Korea's most popular tourist cities featuring a more rustic lifestyle than mega-cities Seoul and Busan and offers much in the way of historical sites.

2015 Ningbo International Tourism Exhibition to Take Place in September

From September 4th – 6th, the Ningbo International Convention Center will host the 2015 Ningbo International Tourism Exhibition to draw attention to the city's tourism resources. The event is to be held with 800 participating booths across the 17,000 square meter exhibition area. Last year's event saw on-site transactions totaling RMB 11 million.

Metro Line 2 Making ProgressOn May 6th, a metro train successfully made the journey from Datong Bridge Station to Qingshupu Station, marking the beginning of the commissioning stage for Metro Line 2. While the first phase of Line 2's underground section began commissioning March 28th, this was the first above-ground portion of Line 2 to undergo the process. The first phase extends from Ningbo Lishe International Airport to Qingshuipu Station, stopping at Ningbo Rail Station along the way and connecting with Line 1 at Gu Lou (Drum Tower) Station.

City Government Releases “Mobile Resident Card”

Ningbo's latest resident card or “E-Tong Card” made its public debut May 14th. The card, which is issued by Ningbo Mobile, the Ningbo Resident Card Company, and the Ningbo Unionpay Company, functions almost exactly the same way as the physical card, offering a cashless way to pay

for bus and subway fares while enjoying several discounts around the city. Residents can change their cards to NFC-USIM cards for free at Ningbo's mobile business centers, and can simply download and install the needed app software to their phone to begin using the card.

City's First Free Vegetarian Restaurant Opens in YinzhouYuhuazhai, Ningbo's first free vegetarian restaurant, opened its doors to the general public on April 28th. The restaurant offers five vegetarian dishes and one soup every weekday from 11:00 AM to noon. All of the restaurant's staff are volunteers. The restaurant is part of a chain that was founded in 2011 with the aim of trying to ease the killing of animals for food. It now claims over 100 locations throughout China. Ningbo's Yuhuazhai is located on the second floor of a building at No. 276 Middle Maocheng Road, Yinzhou District.

Foreign Trade Down Slightly in Q1According to statistics released by the Ningbo Commerce Committee, Ningbo's trade volume in the first quarter of 2015 totaled RMB 187.7 billion, down about 0.8% from the same period in the previous year. Ningbo's biggest trade partners during Q1 were the European Union, the United States of America and the ASEAN nations, accounting for 54.7% of Ningbo's total exports.

Recruiting website Zhaopin.com recently released its report of the Chinese cities with the highest-paying salaries. Ningbo was ranked among the top 10 cities, along with nearby Hangzhou. The top ranking cities predictably were Shanghai (USD 1,107.22 per month) in the top spot, followed by Beijing and Shenzhen (USD 1,093.17 and USD 1,092.19 per month, respectively).

City Releases List of Most Popular Imported Foods (and Beverages)Grain products were Ningbo's most popular imports in Q1 of 2015, but still represented a 4.8% drop from the same period in 2014 according to Ningbo Customs. Seafood and dairy products, however, both saw tremendous increases, with the latter increasing by 870% over the same period. Imported alcohol saw an increase of 56.7%, with red wine and beer both seeing a large surge in popularity. Rounding out the list were cooking oil, juice, honey, meat, fruits and canned fruits.

University of Nottingham to Establish Nottingham New Material Research Institute in NingboAn agreement between the University of Nottingham (UK) and the Ningbo government was signed on May 6th establishing the Nottingham (Ningbo) New Material Research Institute in Ningbo. Support for the endeavor comes from both the signing parties as well as the Ningbo National Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone and Ningbo Science and Technology Bureau. The center will mostly engage in research and development of composite materials, granular materials and sustainable materials.

The following interview was originally in Chinese, and has been translated by Beyond Mandarin.

For four years, Justin has been a student at Beyond Mandarin. His has a busy yet colorful life. By our estimate, he is currently balancing as many as 10 commitments, including study, work, volunteer activities and his own hobbies. We often call Justin a ‘China Hand’, and because his story is so rich, we’ve decided to publish it in three installments. This time, we mainly discussed his experiences of living, and he also talks about learning Chinese, In the next installment, He will share his experiences of working in Ningbo, including interesting places he has visited. and some stories from work. Stay tuned…!

Nicki: Hi, Justin! Today, we’re here to chat about your life these days. Justin: Okay.

Nicki: I’ve heard you really know Ningbo and like Chinese culture. Justin: I do really like Chinese culture. I think that language and culture are connected. After studying Chinese, it’s much easier to understand Chinese people and their way of living. In fact, even before I came to China, I liked reading the ‘Dao De Jing’ (the famous book of Taoism), but I could only read it in English translation. Interestingly, my favorite translator is Ningbonese, John C. H. Wu. He was also a graduate of Xiaoshi High School, very famous. He translated many traditional Chinese books into English.

Nicki: Now you’ve begun to read the ‘Dao De Jing’ in Chinese? Justin: Yes. After I came to China, I began trying to read traditional Chinese characters. My Chinese teacher, Jane, has a good understanding of those ancient texts, and has taught me quite a lot about those aspects of culture. So now, I have a better understanding of that way of thinking from the 'Dao De Jing’. I feel that studying Chinese characters and culture has helped my understanding of the culture and my life here.

Nicki: You know, many Koreans and Japanese know Chinese culture well, and many of them say "It's a pity", meaning that they dont' know when [traditional] culture started to change into the China of today. Do

you have the same feeling after learning about Chinese traditional culture?Justin: I think if you know traditional Chinese culture, and then you think about modern China, you might change your view. For example, when you see a traffic jam, perhaps you can think of it as "Yinyang" [a traditional conceptualization of motion, among other things]. I can understand the way most foreigners think about China, but at the same time I have my own opinion. This is why I think if foreigners want to know more about China, they have to learn Chinese culture. My idea is that traditional and contemporary things can exist together. Sometimes my students say that I’m old. In fact, I think that my way of thinking is half old, half new. You know ‘harmony’: old and new things can coexist harmoniously.

Nicki: I think that many people who like traditional culture also like collecting traditional things. I hear that you also have a collection of such things.Justin: Ha! Yes, my apartment is a ‘museum’.

Nicki: So, let’s come back to the question of studying Chinese and language. I’ve heard that you can speak several languages. How do you think this can help you learn Chinese? Justin: We probably should say I’ve studied several languages but can’t really speak them, since I seldom use them. I’ve studied five languages: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Latin, and now Chinese. I’ll tell you something interesting. Three years ago, I flew from Shanghai to Paris. On the plane I kept practicing my French, reviewing, reviewing, until I felt I was ready. After the plane landed, I called a taxi. I spoke to the driver, he turned his head and just looked at me in surprise. I didn’t realize that I had spoken to him in Chinese. I was really sorry, and immediately started to think how to speak to him in French, and tell him I was going to the hotel. I apologized, told him that I had spoken Chinese. He looked at me like ‘Why are you speaking Chinese?’ So studying a language is certainly useful, but if you don’t use it, it becomes difficult to speak. Fortunately, my teacher is really good, and we speak in Chinese during lessons. When I don’t understand, she’s patient with me.

Nicki: Sometimes I have the same problem that, sometimes I have the whole day classes with Japanese students if I see a Westerner, I

also speak Japanese, and then they look at me strangely, but I also don’t realize I’ve spoken Japanese! Justin: I think that when studying a language you need to practice using facial muscles, this is muscle memory. If you try speaking, your muscles can remember. It’s the same when studying music. When I want to remember a word, I repeat it often. This way is boring, but it’s a good method.

Nicki: Yes, I agree. Justin: I don’t like to think that I’m stupid, so when I study something, I want to practice and remember. I remember one time I took a taxi from U. of Nottingham back home. In the front seat was a Chinese man. He and the driver were talking. I could understand them and wanted to join the conversation. They were discussing something about Germany, and I suddenly said: “In fact, my hat is German.” They both looked at me strangely and asked, “Why did you say that?” I told them that recently I was studying the measuring word ‘顶’, and if I didn’t use it, I’d forget it. I often make opportunities to practice.

Nicki: For you, what’s the hardest part of learning Chinese? Justin: When you learn a word, you need to know how it sounds, how to write it, and how to use it. I often learn words but forget the pronunciation, or the characters. This is extremely difficult. Sometimes I know how to pronounce a character but not what it means.

Nicki: “Everything is difficult at the beginning.” When you start to learn characters, it must be quite difficult. How did you begin learning characters? Justin: This is a difficult problem at the start. I practiced writing everyday, read a lot of advertisements and books. Slowly, I was able to read more and more. But now I use the computer and type, so my writing isn’t so good.

Nicki: Now, your teacher, Jane, has become a really great friend. What do you think of her classes?Justin: She’s exceedingly patient, and I’m thankful for her. Often I’m too busy to review, and so forget many characters, still she helps me a lot.

Nicki: One last question: I’m curious, in the States you have already pursued a doctorate, so why go to Nottingham for postgraduate work? Justin: In America I already pursued a doctorate, but I didn’t actually finish the dissertation. About the reasons why I decided to go to Nottingham for postgraduate work, there are many! First, I enjoy teaching English, so I wanted to study Linguistics. I wanted to have a better understanding of research [in the field], so going to Nottingham was a good opportunity, since I don’t have to move to another country. I can just stay in Ningbo while learning and working. Also, at Nottingham I’ve gotten to know some professors. I think that education is important, and I enjoy studying new things.

Nicki: Thank you for sharing so much of your life and your stories. Next time, we’ll talk a bit about your current work. Justin: My pleasure.

Narendra Modi found himself marking a year as Prime Minister neither in his home state of Gujarat nor in New Delhi, but in the bustling metropolis of Shanghai.

The final engagement of his three-day visit to China (May 14-16) was a speech to the expatriate Indian community. I was there and I doubt I shall forget the spectacle. Nor could one argue with his refrain:vaqt badal raha hai (the times are changing).

Becoming visible

When I first arrived in China from the UK in 2011, I was struck by how few Indians could be seen there. This impression was compounded by discovering how limited the flight options between China and India were, in great contrast to the daily (often multiple) flights between China and the UK and other more distant destinations. Although business school academics in Shanghai brought together leading practitioners, diplomats and experts to reflect on Sino-Indian business activity, it seemed that neither nation saw the other as much of a priority.

But a lot can (and does) happen in four years. The Modi show in Shanghai certainly suggests progress has been made since I first set foot in China: in the emergence of a new style of foreign relations in India, in the willingness of China and India to engage with each other, in the ability of the Indian community in China to cohere.

As I reflect on this event I am encouraged and cautious in equal measure about China-India relations in general and Sino-Indian business activity in particular, for three reasons.

Prior experience to go with the charisma. My biggest source of encouragement stems from the fact that although this was Modi’s first visit as Prime Minister, it was far from being his first experience of China. Indeed, the one bright spot in my early dismal assessment of China-India dealings was Modi’s visit as Gujarat chief minister in November 2011 — and that had been his fourth such visit.I teach international strategy in a business school, and I emphasise to my students the importance of prior experience in helping entrepreneurs and managers succeed in foreign markets knowledgably. Modi’s China experience of the past augurs well for what India can achieve in China, and may well make a big difference to whether his visit ends up yielding incremental advances in business opportunities for Indian businesses in China and vice versa — or representing a genuine inflexion point that heralds the next substantial wave of Indo-Chinese commercial activity.

source of caution arises from the fact that the honest acknowledgement of problems is a necessary but insufficient condition for solving them. Modi has been justifiably commended in the Indian press for being frank about the need for tackling vexing issues such as border disputes, and his Chinese counterpart has reciprocated the candour. This helps, but the proof of the pudding will become apparent only as the interfaces established on this visit are utilised for continued dialogue.

Business veterans in China, including some from India, often comment on the need for commitment, patience and persistence in cracking the Chinese market. Surely, this holds for Sino-Indian diplomacy as well.

The Indian community in China exists! Whatever the actual outcomes of Modi’s visit for Sino-Indian business, the event has already made history in bringing together far-flung expats of Indian origin in China on an unprecedented scale. The significance of this might not be easy to grasp for those living amongst numerous people of Indian origin in the US, UK, South Africa, West Asia and Down Under.

In China, however, the sight of Indian restaurants and other signs of a thriving

Indian community is not commonplace outside of the large metropolises (or Yiwu, the city with the largest contingent from outside Shanghai at the event).

So to have nearly 5,000 people of Indian origin under one roof was truly remarkable. As a colleague commented: “I have always wondered where all those Indians travelling with me on Air India flights to China went, because I’ve never seen them afterwards. Now I know!”

Quo vadis?

Several years ago, when I was a newly minted lecturer at Glasgow University, I was invited to an Indian community reception in London for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. My recollections of that event in London are of low-key dignity and a profound sense of history. Shanghai was high-octane celebration and a profound sense of anticipation.

So, where to from here? India has to be honest and understand that although China and India are spoken of in the same breath, in reality it is a distant second as an economy. The interest that Modi has generated in China, therefore, acquires even greater significance. To his credit he has

come across in the media, both in China and India, as one who wouldn’t settle for anything but treatment as an equal. But it does not mask the fact that India and China are great rivals. That said, I would aver that the debate as to whether China and India are (or should be) friends or rivals represents a false dichotomy.

Rivalry between the two most populous nations in the world, widely regarded as the two largest economies of the future, is virtually inevitable. But what is not inevitable is whether this rivalry is friendly or bitter.

An important understanding I have acquired is that often the Chinese deal with dilemmas differently from their western counterparts — they tend to opt for ‘both…and’ rather than ‘either…or’. This may be a good way to go because neither nation can afford not to be rivals — or to destroy friendship over their rivalries. What China and India should work out is how to be rivals and friends at the same time.

When Ningbo Guide put some of my Huangshan pictures into its May edition, I felt a little guilty that I myself hadn’t actually written anything about the places I had been or the pictures I had personally taken. Huangshan is one of my favourite scenic places to go in China and, but for the fact that it is not the easiest of places to get to (nor one of the cheapest!) from Ningbo, I would go there a lot more often. I love travel, I love photography and so combining the two interests is natural for me – even if I have to be creative so as to ensure that my heavy camera gear gets onto the plane as hand luggage.

So, let’s talk briefly about Vietnam. Two years ago, I took what turned out to be one of the maddest holidays I think I’ve ever done. 9 nights, 9 different beds, 8 different hotels, (please don’t ask!) 5 flights and 5 cities later, I returned. Sounds hectic? It was. Crazily so. Let me tell you more – and say something about Vietnam as I do so. I’ve actually been to Vietnam twice now: the second time was anything but hectic…

Arriving in Hanoi from Ningbo is easy. There are regular flights from Ningbo to Hanoi via Guangzhou, with the latter part of the journey usually being a codeshare with either China Southern or Vietnam Airlines. I have to be honest: Guangzhou airport is my least favourite airport in China. You cannot check baggage straight through to anywhere it seems – I’ve had to re-check in for every flight I have ever taken through the airport and I can never find

any sign which tells me where I should check in for any connecting flight – but that apart, getting to Vietnam is not difficult. You can also fly direct from Pudong. At the Vietnam border you collect and pay for the visa you applied for you online some time before (you cannot do this if you are travelling overland, but it works at both Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi airports and it is relatively easy to find the desk at the airports before you go through passport control), you collect your luggage at the other end and off you go.

So, you take a taxi to your hotel in Hanoi. More likely than not, it will be a small boutique hotel nestled in a side street. Typically, about 3m wide and 5 stories high: thin and narrow seem to be the way of buildings in Hanoi. The fairly narrow city centre streets are often covered in leafy branches above and motorcycles below, giving the city a wonderful and definite sense of character. I really love the place – and the streets provide some great opportunities for photography, whether it be the folk selling fruit from their bicycles or the small shops at the side of the streets.

There is a lake and small ‘castle’ in the centre of the city, housing memories of a turtle which died in 2007, having lived for some 100+ years, and on the other side of the city centre, there is ‘Westlake’, which is remarkably reminiscent of a place with a similar sounding name not too far from Ningbo, if I remember correctly. Food is easy to get and there is an HSBC bank in the centre of town. Just one word about currency, though: get some

changed at the airport when you arrive and change it back when you leave. Once you go through passport control, there is nowhere to change it, and the Vietnamese Dong is difficult if not illegal to change outside of the country.Hanoi is a lovely place with a lot of character, and if you stay close to the city centre, then everything seems to be pretty much within walking distance. There are tourist shops offering various tours everywhere around the centre of town and I’d highly recommend walking around the place: I loved it. The hotels and beds vary in standard but the coffee doesn’t: it is strong and requires the Vietnamese version of condensed milk (it is actually more like whipping cream, before being whipped) in consistency in order to break the caffeine down into something a little more brown than black. Whilst I think about it, the beds are closer to Western beds – they have springs in their mattresses in Vietnam too – and the rooms are pretty comfortable, on the whole.

Is it safe? I’d say yes, but like everywhere, be careful. Watch out for the motorcycles coming from every direction (no different to Ningbo then, eh?) and make sure that you have a secure pack around your waist (Pacsafe do some ‘lockable’ ones that are more secure than others I have come across). I got up early to take some shots there (I use a Canon 5Diii with a variety of lenses) and found that most people like to get up early and do their Tai-Chi around the lake early in the morning, which makes for a really nice morning experience.

anywhere.

After a couple of days there, I did one of the things I had planned to do – I went up to Sapa in the North. Sapa borders on to Yunnan, so the rice-terrace scenery is as spectacular as the clothing of the various ethnic groups who live in the region. It is not difficult to arrange this: an overnight train to and from Hanoi means that you spend a good few hours sharing a 6-berth railway coach with five others, most of whom will not speak English – which gives good reason to sleep. At the station, you’ll be met by a chaotic situation which will include your tour guide/rep for the duration of your visit. A 40 minute bus journey will then take you to your hotel and the hotel will then take over – help you select any walks you wish to do, give you breakfast, store your luggage until your room becomes available (which is usually much earlier in the morning than for normal hotels, simply because they know that people arrive early in the morning) and get you ready for the day’s activity.

What you do is up to you. Vietnam’s Sapa region is hilly but stunningly beautiful. The

rice terraces are everywhere – they’d make a great jigsaw – and watching a farmer encourage a cow to mow the ground is a wonderful reminder of how different life is. The people are generally friendly and hospitable. It is possible, of course, to feel quite pressured by the local ethnic guides at the end of a day’s hike to buy a purse or small bag. They are not usually that expensive, can be quite pretty, might make a nice gift and provide a bit of income for the local ethnic groups, but whether you choose to buy anything is entirely up to you. Just don’t be offended if they get a bit sulky with you if you don’t buy anything at the end of the hike, OK?

Sapa is geared up for tourists. Everything from restaurants with Western menus and hiking/camping shops with western equipment. What you won’t find there is your average Hilton or Marriott: its just not that kind of a place. The hotels (and there are many) are cramped into whatever spaces are available and you might need to go up a few steps to reach them, so don’t take a traditional 23kg suitcase full of luggage:

you’ll only have to carry it up some steps at some stage.

t The clothes that the Ethnic groups wear – red, black, multicoloured – are strikingly pretty and the children are very happy to pose for a shot or two if you give them a little incentive. It takes place on a Sunday and is one of the tours that you can take with most of the hotels. Photography groups often use the market as a place to practice/learn more about the craft and a walk around the place for an hour or two is well worth it: it’s a very different Vietnam from that in central Hanoi.

So, back on the evening train and a side-trip to Ho Chi Minh city (otherwise known as Saigon) in the south of the country. When Vietnam was divided, Saigon was the capital city of the south and it still retains a strong sense of its own importance. A visit to the central government buildings can take you down to the 1960’s and 70’s war rooms, with the communications equipment still installed. Two hours drive to the south and you’ll be in the MeKong delta and it is

perfectly possible to spend a day doing a tour of the various attractions there.

Ho Chi Minh city is very different to Hanoi. There is still some greenery here, but this place is the financial capital. It is to Hanoi what Shanghai is to Beijing in that sense (though I’d hesitate to stretch the analogy much further than that…), and it is here where you will find a lot more to do in the evenings: night boat trips, bars, etc. I wasn’t in Ho Chi Minh city long, but was left with the impression of a modern cosmopolitan city which was far more advanced than the capital Hanoi (and which had about 6 times the number of motorcycles!).

Then it was back to Hanoi, and this time a side trip to Ha Long Bay. This is a very well-known and spectacular place which has to be on the agenda of every tourist going to Hanoi. Well, OK, it doesn’t, but if you’re not going to be there very often, then it kind of makes sense. It is three hours away, on roads which are varied in standard (if you’re from the UK, it’s a bit like going from Birmingham to a decent sized town somewhere in Devon, in terms of the roads) as much as they are varied in what you can see from a coach or car window. And then as you get closer, the excitement rises as you start to see Guilin style limestone kast scenery rising first from the fields and then the sea, as you get to the coast.

Ha Long Bay is a tourist resort, but it is also a thriving fishing village. It was great to get up early, see the sun rise over the water (you can stay overnight on a boat,

but I didn’t) and see the fishermen (& women) go out in their boats for the day. Once that is done, you get on a boat (if you haven’t slept on the water) and start touring the amazing rocky outcrops such as that featured on the 200,000 Dong note. The caves are beautiful to visit: they are lit up inside in all sorts of colours and are as spectacular as any I have visited, so make sure that you do climb up into one of the rocks on your trip to see them. (I’d be surprised if an organissed tour didn’t have that as part of their itinerary.) The rocks themselves are, well, unlike anything I have seen anywhere else (No, I haven’t got to see Guilin or Yangshuo yet) and it is not surprising that the place captures the imagination. It was a bit overcast when I was there and I do wish to go back and overnight on a boat to get some better shots.

And that was my visit to Vietnam. I did a lot, was able to meet a lot of people and was treated to a fantastic amount of hospitality (I admit: it does help to have friends in the country). It is a country well worth visiting and is not too far from home in Ningbo. I would encourage a little more stability in your 9 days than I had in mine, but please: do enjoy the coffee. Time to go somewhere else now…

Let's get this out of the way: we'd eat at this place no matter what they served. Housed inside a Qing Dynasty-era house that was built more than 300 years ago, Ashima Courtyard is like a trip through time where the time machine lands you into a world of delicious and exotic Yunnan cuisine.

The entrance to the Ashima Courtyard is on a little side street near Gu Lou. Said entrance is one of those traditional doorways with a lip on the ground that I

swear will be the death of me someday. The dining area is divided into two sections—courtyard and Main Hall. The entirety of the interior is decorated in traditional Yunnan style and filled with plants. The whole place has a light, airy vibe to it that certainly warrants sitting around a table for extended periods of time.

choose from. However, the food itself is also a rarity in Ningbo--fresh, healthy, authentic Yunnan food. The menu ranges from modest-yet-delicious items such as 培根干锅花菜 (pei gen gan guo hua cai), stir-fried cauliflower with bacon to more complex, exotic dishes like 烤草鱼 (kao cai yu), river carp with bean sprouts and chili peppers.

The restaurant also doubles as an accidentally-awesome bar. Drink prices

are beyond reasonable and while it's not necessarily consistent, they do offer draft beer in a really attractive environment. Add to that its location in one of Ningbo's oldest and most well-preserved neighborhoods and you've got a great place to get the night started. The street where the restaurant is located makes for an absolutely splendid after-dinner stroll, with loads of bars and cafes nearby to take the next step in your evening.

Saint Honore | Yinzhou Says “Bonjour” to Authentic Pastries and BreadAuthentic French pastries and Bread find their way into the suburb to the south

Saint-Honore French Bakery opened up shop in April to the delight of just about everyone in Yinzhou. The shop itself is just around a corner and not super visible from the street (we've got the address below to help you out), but anyone walking within about 200 meters of the place will certainly recognize the intoxicating aroma of sugar, yeast and butter wafting through the air.

The shop offers just about everything you'd want from a true French patisserie. Flaky croissants that melt in your mouth, a variety of pastries made with real cream and butter, tarts and tartlettes; you get the idea.

The true test of a French bakery, however, is the almighty baguette. Despite what your more pretentious friends would have you believe, there's no checklist to what makes a baguette. It's either amazing or less than

(pretty hard to have a bad baguette, though some places in Ningbo certainly seem to try). Saint Honore passes this test with flying colors. Their particular baguette has a crunchy crust browned to perfection and a light but ever-so-slightly chewy center. It begs immediately for butter or cheese and perhaps a bottle of red wine. That being said, it's probably best to wait until after lunch if a baguette is what you're after.

Fortunately if it's still a little early for a wine, bread and cheese session you're in luck. This means that there's actually somewhere other than Starbucks to go have a coffee and a pastry at the time of day that you want a coffee and pastry the most—the morning. Quelle surprise! That alone is enough of a reason to celebrate Saint Honore's entrance into Yinzhou, but pretty much everything about the place is worth celebrating.

Saint Honore's Yinzhou location is a godsend for what's probably Ningbo's most densely foreign-populated area. Simply having baguettes, Paris brest and tart au citron would be enough to win the hearts and stomachs of most, but there is palpable love and care into everything that comes out of the kitchen here. On top of that the owners and management couldn't be more friendly, adding another place to the list of Yinzhou establishments where people actually bother to know your name and smile when they see you again.

Try not to finish that baguette on your way home.

Every month we bring you the skinny on the latte and the cafe that serves it. With all the coffee shops opening all over Ningbo, we'll bring you the low-down, right to the last drop.

A few weeks ago there was a little meme floating around the web that read “DESIGNERS” at the top, and below had two photos: one of a neat, clean and white chair against a similarly neat, clean and white background with a caption reading “What we design,” and the other of a horribly messy chair and desk with the caption reading “Where we design it.” Now, admittedly, describing a meme in the world of flesh and blood (or in this case, paper and ink) is one of the lamest things you could possibly do in the modern age, there is a point here. Designers, like the one who lovingly put this page together, spend inordinate amounts of time making things look neat and pretty, but visit their home or their workspace and you might find yourself up to your knees and elbows in the most random assortment of paper, tools and junk you've ever seen.

This mess can be a kind of comforting chaos for people who earn a living making words, pictures and pages look absolutely perfect.

Cafe Design is a space that exists as a compromise between who it is designed for and who it is designed by. Nearly every wall in the cafe is filled with books and magazines. While it does look neat and

pretty, it's got enough organized clutter to soothe the designer soul within us all.

For a more general kind of soul-soothing, Cafe Design has more than a few vodkas on shelf. Though whisky (or whiskey, whatever) is all the rage in Ningbo these days, it's nice to see other spirits get a nod every once in a while. It's not something you see often in Ningbo, and that in and of itself is quite pleasing.

The food is a step above what we've come to expect at coffee shops in Ningbo. The place thankfully keeps things pretty simple with foolproof options like black pepper beef and cheesy baked rice. It's also worth noting that Cafe Design has one of the few pieces of cheesecake in the city with any gravitas to it.

Cafe Design is a bit far from anywhere other than C.O.B., making it a bit of a one-off for a cup of coffee (or a tall, ice-cold glass of vodka). However, it's definitely worth penciling in next time you're heading eastward (Ikea run, maybe?). It might just be the delightful bit of organized chaos you need.

All hail the mighty swine. Discerning diners and cantankerous chefs will usually agree that no animal reigns more edible than the pig. There may be pieces of other animals that hit levels of delicious that no other creature could but there is no other animal that can be used head to toe to make some of the best food. From China to France the pigs foot is just the beginning of using pork to its fullest. And seeing as pork is a sort of national meat in China, every month we'll bring you a new way to get the most out of the tasty pig.

Red Braised Pork is found in a number of different Chinese cooking styles, from the sweeter Shanghai variety to the fiery Hunan flavor. You may have seen or heard of Eddie Huang's New York City version, which employs the spice from his Hunanese roots and a decidedly American use of Cherry Coke to form a modern twist on the classic. Wherever it may come from, the elements of Red Braised Pork remain the same: moderately fatty pork belly browned in sugar and ginger and then braised in a sweet liquid, traditionally rice wine mixed with sugar. The result is a crunchy exterior with a moist, tender and flavorful center.

This is a pretty traditional recipe, but we've merged it with our BBQ Bike spice profile to give it just a hint of Americana.

Usually this section is reserved for something smoky and decidedly western, but this being China, we thought it best to give a nod to a bonafide Chinese Classic, hong shao rou, or Red Braised Pork.

Melt the sugar and the vegetable oil in a medium pot over medium high heat. Continue heating until the sugar is starts to turn darker in color, or about three minutes. Turn the heat up slightly and place the cubed pork in the pot and brown it with the caramelized sugar, for about eight minutes, making sure to turn it.Put the dry ingredients, dark soy sauce, rice wine and clear stock into the pot. Cover the pot and simmer over low heat. Cook for about 40 minutes. Stir the meat every 10 minutes to make sure the bottom of the pot doesn't burn (burning it a little is okay, it's just going to be a pain to clean). Take the cover off and turn the heat to medium high. Cook the meat for another 10 minutes until the sauce reduces down to a smooth, sticky, beautiful consistency.

Hundreds of people flocked to Ningbo Cultural Plaza to check out Whale Music Festival on the night of June 6th. The event featured a lineup of local bands and one from Poland. The event featured some notably awesome production and went off without a hitch. The highlight of the evening, however, was definitely watching a mostly young audience jam out to an electronic-y cover of Pink Floyd's "The Wall." Rock on Ningbo.

Is there a more refreshing summer cocktail than a margarita? Si! How about a frozen blue margarita!

The margarita is one of the world's favorite cocktails. Originating from Mexico, it goes great with the spicy, savory flavors of Mexican food and just about anything else. It's a delicious mixture of salty, sweet, sour and whatever flavor you'd use to describe tequila. The drink has become so popular, it even has its own glass—a modified version of a champagne or cocktail stemware glass somewhat resembling an upside-down sombrero.

Margaritas are usually served “on the rocks,” in a glass over ice, but in recent years a frozen, blended slurpee-esque form has surged in popularity. This version is made with blue curacao, which gives it a sweeter and more mild citrus flavor.

Take out all the tools, glasses and ingredients. Use a lemon slice to wet the rim of the glass. Dip the glass into a plate of salt to coat the rim in salt. If you are making this margarita for a member of the Ningbo Guide team, make sure to put a ton of salt on there.

Put all the ingredients into a blender (*note

that the blender needs to be a fairly good one capable of crushing ice). Add one full scoop of ice, about 100 g, then blend on high until the mixture is completely smooth and blended. Pour the mixture into your prepared margarita glass. Garnish with a lime peel and a maraschino cherry. Add two straws (in case one gets a chunk of ice stuck in it).

Enjoy. But not too quickly. Beware the dreaded ice cream headache!

Several months ago we wrote about Diversity, the LGBTQ+ advocacy group that's been tirelessly working to make Ningbo a better place for all people, and especially those in the LGBTQ+ community.

We could not be more proud that Diversity has chosen us to print this Safe Space map, one of the organization's key projects, and one that has been months of hard work in the making. Famous yoga therapy teacher, and author of the inspiring book The Heart of Yoga T.K.V. Desikachar is often quoted to have said that yoga is 90% waste removal, which happens from exhalation, the outbreath. The basic foundation of classical yoga practices is that the Kleshas (obstructions or blocks) uncovered, making a space in our bodies so our prana or pranic energy can flow freely.

This starts with the breath.

The notion is that prana (the in-breath) and apana (the outbreath) “must have a healthy reciprocal relationship in the body”, as Leslie Kaminoff of The Breathing Project says, our bodies the pathways or space for this to happen. Getting the breathing right is more importance than doing or being in the pose (asana) perfectly, not only because it implicates whether you can do or be in the asana at all, but also because yoga is the art of presence, a healing art, starting with

consciousness of the breath. Simplistically, in the yoga asana, the rule of thumb is that we breathe in when our bodies are open, and we breathe out when our bodies are closed or contracted.

When we move into an asana the breath guides us and creates space in our bodies, where we experience new (more subtle) sensations that in our less conscious bodily movements and states, we do not. What I find with the breath is that when we are conscious of our breath, we feel more deeply in our bodies and thus stop paying attention to the mind. When the mind persists and shoots out unhelpful thoughts, we can feel secure to know that instead of giving it much cause, we can simply return to the breath.

It’s always there, waiting patiently for us to notice it.

Some of my favourite practices to embed into a regular yoga routine are as follows:

Breathing Meditation – The Fourth Path of Yoga (Pranayama)Monitoring the breath can be done by breathing in deeply, holding the breath and then breathing out very slowly and gently. There are many techniques for breathing meditations. This is a great place to start if you’re new to meditation. The benefits are three fold in my experience: 1. Drawing awareness of the present moment: Conscious breathing is a simple and resourceful way to draw your awareness to the present moment, and can be done at any point in the day, a sure starter for getting present one those days when meditation is challenging. 2. Calming the mind:I find breathing meditations to be the most

soothing and calming, paying attention to the regular rhythm of the breath - slowly, gently, deeply – is simplest way to let go of the day and the thoughts that shoot out from the mind.3. Cleansing the body:Breathing meditations prior to doing a yoga routine cleanse and prepare the body for what is to come. They loosen the body and create more space in preparation for a yoga practice or simply alone. Alone, breathing meditations can even aid digestion and more in the physical body.

Alternate Nostril Breathing – Nadi Sodhana Pranayama Before starting a series of asanas, or yoga routine, this form of yogic breathing very uplifting and I find it makes my body feel lighter in a seated meditation pose like Sukhasana (The Easy Pose). Even just 10 minutes of this is enough to feel the effects and benefits prior to starting a yoga routine. It involves sitting in a meditation posture, and controlling and alternating the breath, from one nostril to another. The hand gesture (mudra in Sanskrit) that should be adopted is Vishnu mudra (pictured). A little uncomfortable I find, so you can use the hand gesture you feel most comfortable with. It’s more important to get the breathing right:1. Cover the left nostril and breath in deeply through the right.2. Alternate by covering the right nostril and holding the breath for a moment.3. Uncover the left nostril and breath out, very gently. 4. Repeat slowly and rhythmically for at least 10 minutes. Fire Breathing or Breath of Fire – Agni PranThis is the godmother of all the yogic

breathing in my view. It is the most recent and evolved to date, introduced by Kundalini yoga master Yogi Bhajan. I love it, it’s the most energising and awakening. It can be done in any asana or meditation pose, and

it is most typically done in the sitting pose ‘Ego Eradicator’ in Kundalini yoga, with the arms outstretched to about 60-70 degrees and thumbs pointed inwards. I like to do it in poses where my chest is open, like in Ushtrasana (pictured) or a simple side-twist pose for opening the lung and warming

heart centre (also pictured). An unusual form of breathing, which takes a little time to master, a massage for the internal organs and diaphragm. You can find video guidance on my website integralyogaworld.co if you want to give this one a try. As well as in my yoga practice, I like to do it when I am waiting in a queue, have a headache or feeling tired. It works wonders. If you are going to start anywhere, try a breathing meditation and move on from there. I promise you will enjoy the pranic boost it gives you almost instantaneously.

The Middle School students at Hua Mao MEA turned the classic children's book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak into a theatrical spectacle that involved physical theatre, mask making and performance, set creation and much more.

In MEA Middle School, Year 6 to Year 9 kids turned the famous children’s story ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ into an awesome play. It was an amazing experience, and something we would love the opportunity to do again. Mr. Nick and Ms. Sylvie, our drama teachers, have been putting all their sweat and blood into planning this production the entire year. Their hard work finally paid off when we performed it on Friday 28th May in our third floor auditorium to an audience of children,

adults and teachers. We could tell from the audience’s reactions that they were completely enthralled from our performance. It’s not like we’re biased, or anything.

We first started by brainstorming monster faces on huge pieces of paper, and then created the masks that were used in the show. Mr. Nick helped everyone workshop their parts in the play, and was the mastermind of the script.

The day of the performance was hectic. Face paint and hairspray was excessively used, and took multiple washes to get out. Everyone had to be in the right place at the right time, or else the whole play would fall apart. We thought the organization would be the most difficult part, but everyone worked really well with each other. Our favourite part was definitely the monster scene and dancing in the wild rumpus. We could act all crazy like monsters and scream and growl as much as we wanted to. We thought the props we used were amazing, from the scary masks to moving waves to trees and lights.

Overall, this never would have become a reality without Mr. Sylvie and Mr. Nick’s brilliance. We are all grateful for their expertise in creating this epic piece of performance. We would never have the opportunity without them.

We would love to turn The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry into a play, because we think it’s an extremely good story and would appeal to both children and adults. If you’ve never read it, we seriously recommend it.

The airport taxis use a ticket system to prevent fraud, so make sure you keep your ticket, and get a receipt from the driver when you arrive at your destination. City taxi drivers are typically quite honest, and have been known to return lost bags, mobile phones, computers, and even cash. If you have your receipt, the taxi company can identify the driver and call him if you forget something in the taxi.

Passenger Transportation Center The Passenger Transportation Center is closer to Ningbo airport than to the city center. It connects with the local city buses 369, 501, 504, or 523. Fenghua Big Buddha

Just outside of Ningbo in Fenghua is one of the largest Buddha's in Zhejiang. The large seated buddha towers over onlookers at the top of the mountain. It can be seen from other moutaintops in the surrounding area. It's a very large structure that is impressive to see. The grandeur and scale of the Buddha is impressive to say the least. Be sure to go on some of the hiking trails nearby as well.

There is a regular bus from Ningbo to Xikou; from Xikou's Nong Yong Che Station there is a bus that will take you to the bottom of the mountain. From there, you can catch a shuttle.
