얼마 전 한국경제신문 기사에 뇌가 행복한 '공간의 비밀' 신경건축학으로 푼다.

라는 제목의 기사가 실렸습니다.

신경건축학은 말 그대로 신경과학(neuroscience)과 건축학(architecture)을

합친 말로 사람이 어떤 건축물이나 공간을 마주할 때 인간의 뇌가 어떻게 반

응하는지 분석하는 학문이라고 합니다.

행복을 느끼는 순간 분비되는 세로토닌이나 스트레스 호르몬인 코티솔을 정

량적으로 측정해 뇌가 행복하다고 반응하는 건축이나 공간을 파악하는 것인

데, 요즘은 이제는 뇌의 활동을 포착하는 기능성자기공명영상(fMRI)과 뇌전

도검사기(EEG)가 있어 공간이 실제 인간의 뇌 인지작용에 미치는 미묘한 영

향을 측정할 수 있다고 합니다.

솔크박사는 루이스 칸에게 자신의 소아마비 백신 아이디어가연구실에서는 떠오르지 않았지만 13세기고성당에서 떠올린 것을 생각하며 천장이 높은 곳에서 창의적인 아이디어가 나오는 것 같다라고 말함

보통 실내 천장 높이가 무려 2.4m인 것과 달리 솔크 연구소는 3m로 높이를 상향 조정해 세상에서 가장천장이 높은 연구소 중 하나가 되었다.

천장 높이가 2.4m, 2.7m, 3m인 세 건물에서 실험에 참가한 사람들에게 창의력이 필요한문제를 풀도록 했더니, 천장높이가 3m인 방에서 풀 때가 다른 두 유형의 방에서 풀 때 보다 두

배 이상 잘 풀었다고 함.

천장 높인 연구소, 숲이 보이는 병실, 파란 벽지의 공부방이 설득력을 얻는 것은

바로 이러한 정확한 영향력과 측정을 바탕으로 신경건축이 사람을 헤아리는 학문이기

사람들은 자연과 함께할 때 행복감을 느낀다고 주장한다. 몸이 아픈 환자들은 발코니가 넓고 창이 커서 나무와 꽃이 잘 보이는 공간에서 더 빨리 치유된다. 치매 환자들은 숲길을 산책하고 정원에서 차를 마실 때 인지기능이 오래 유지된다. 공간이 삶을 치유하는 일은 늘

벌어지는 일이라고 역설한다.

설거지를 하면서도 거실의 가족들과 대화를 나눌 수 있는 아일랜드 키친에서 큰 만족감을느낀다는 보고도 있다. 아일랜드 키친에서 애착 형성 호르몬인 옥시토신의 분비가 늘어난다는 얘기다. 책을 읽을 때 가장 행복한 사람은 서재가 반드시 있어야 하고, 가족과의 대화가 필요하다면 거실은 대화할 수 있는 분위기로 꾸며져야 한다. 우리 가족이 언제 행복한지

를 알아야 좋은 집을 발견할 수 있다.

또한 치매 환자들을 위한 요양원은 기숙사처럼 복도식 구조면 불편하다는 사실도 밝혔다. 기억력이 현저히 떨어져 자신의 방도 제대로 못 찾는 분이 많기 때문이다. 박물관을 방불케할 만큼 옛날에 쓰던 물건들을 진열해 놓아 기억을 되살리려는 노력을 요양원이 적극적으로 해야 한다고 설파한다. 이미 미국과 독일은 신경건축학 덕분에 요양원의 건축구조가 많

이 바뀌었다.이처럼 신경건축학은 사람에 대한 관심과 이해 를 토대로 인간에게 행복한 공간이란 무엇인가 에 대한연구를 위한 학문이라고 할 수 있다.

“Visual access to sky, trees and landscape stimulates brain function,” Dougherty said. “Providing vistas throughout the facility and particularly in classrooms has been a major strategy in the design of this building,” she said of the middle school.

Design modifies the brain

The role of neuroscience in architecture is a contemporary concept that attaches scientific proof, measurement and research to thedesign of buildings.The thinking goes like this: The brain controls behavior, and genes control the design and structure of the brain. Science shows thatenvironment can modulate the function of genes and, ultimately, the structure of the brain. So if changes in the environment changebehavior, architectural design can change it too.

It was important for the building to set a new identity for St. Louis Children’s Hospital, yet at the same time, incorporate elements found on the main campus, such as the iconic blue band that cuts through the

exterior of the new building

The interior spaces follow a theme of imagination and discovery; the color palette, artwork, windowwalls, and environmental graphics offer opportunities for children to play, learn, socialize, and explore.undergo tests or procedures, they get their passport stamped, with the goal of turning the experience

into something they can look forward to. To enhance the patient experience, patientsare given a special “passport” when they arrive. As they “travel” todifferent departments throughout the building or To inform the placement of positive

distractions, the team interviewed clinical leaders to better understand how treatments, therapies, andprocedures impact how children are physically positioned during an appointment. Findings informed theplacement of graphic elements on the walls, ceilings, and floors; for example, when a child is seatedon an exam table for an immunization, graphic elements are placed on the wall where the child is facingto reduce fear and make them more receptive to treatment.

그는 아름다운 풍광 그 자체만으로도 많은 양의 모르핀을 우리 뇌에 투여해 주는 것과 같은 효과가 있다고 말하면서 분명 행복에 대한 과학적 근거만으로는 행복한 공간을 만들 수는 없겠지만 건축가와 신경과학자의 협업을 통해 더 창의적이고 행복한 공간을 꿈꿀 수 있다는데 그 의의가 크다고합니다.
