  • Krasny Bor: May – October 2016Monitoring: facts and opinion

  • Summary of the previous reports

    The landfill is a potentially dangerous object

    Of most concern are the following:

    - open pits No. 64, 68 (the inflow of rainwater/a small reserve of free volume; defects of pits dam);

    - The main way of pollution spreading is the transport of pollutants via surface and surface-drainage waters;

    - the necessity of regular environmental monitoring within the boundaries of the landfill and around it.

  • Schedule :МАY : PILOT WORK AT THE OPEN PITS

  • Contamination of surface water - Low concentration: H2S, sulfides, formaldehyde, benzo(a)pyrene, Cu, As,

    Zn, Cd, Ni, Pb, Co, Tl, Cr, and 2,4-DDТ, 4,4-DDТ, PCB 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, 180, Cl3ethylen, chloroform, Cl4CH4, Cl4CH6, tetrachloroethylene, chlorinated dioxins, volatile and semivolatile organic substances (Toluol, Benzen, Xelen, Ethylbenzen).

    Comparison of surface water samples taken at different distances from the landfill allows to conclude the following:

    - concentration of such substances, as detergents, Cl-ion, NH4 and N-ion, NO2-ion, F-ion, phenol, mineral oil, Al, Fe, Mn increases as the distance from the polygon, which presumably suggests that the source of contamination of these substances is not the landfill, and facilities located outside its boundaries.

    - concentration of pollutants: PCB, SO4-ion, NO3 ion, Mg, V, Hg, Bedecreases with distance from the landfill, which may indicate that the source of contamination is the landfill.

    Soil. Identified excessive concentrations of soils of all the analyzed components. The most polluted area is located between the landfill Krasny Bor and old landfill.

    Soil. We are have not full information, but 2 sample of clay take from subsurface layer, is «clean»

  • Opinion

    Feel #1

    Step/ problem Recomendation 1. The beginning of the work It is right!!! To continue the works

    2. Plan of the work : strategic aims, tactic steps, safety measures

    To continue the consultation of scientific and technical Council

    Upgrade or new construction of multistage wastewater treatment plant

    3. Monitoring plan To continue the works

    4. Monitoring components Use HELCOM recommendation ( for example : CCl4 ?)

    5. A lot of contractors - a lot of information about pollution and the environment – need one data base

    Design GIS project,mathematical modeling of the «multivariation accident»

    6. See information distributed in time and space Prepare and publication articles (magazine, web)

    7. Revision deep monitoring well at the landfill To close a deep boreholle or made a small hole (3-5 m)
