Lost in Translationvolcano (roman Bondarchuk, Ukraine/germany, 2018)
Opening with a tense and aweinspiring topdown shot of a cargo ship passing a bridge, Ukrainian director Roman Bondarchuk (Ukrai-nian Sheriffs, Dixie Land) sets the mood in his first fiction film. There’s a similar unnerving quality to Volcano’s first act, in which thirtysomething Lukas (an acting debut by sound designer Serhiy Stepansky) drives past military checkpoints near the Crimea with his colleagues, a group of OSCE military inspectors.
It feels like the beginning of a slasher movie when their car breaks down and they’re stranded in the middle of nowhere. Since he's at the bottom of the hierarchy, interpreter Lukas is ordered to find help. While that proves to be unexpectedly easy, when Lukas returns both the car and his colleagues are nowhere to be found. All alone and with no cellphone reception he has no other option than to accept the invitation of his unlikely saviors: eccentric Vova (Viktor Zhdanov) and his teenage daughter Marushka (Khrystyna Deilyk). They bring him to the small town of Beryslav in the Kherson region. During
a scuffle with a local youngster Lukas soon loses all of his belongings, including the documents he needs to get home safely.
While he's now based in Kiev, Bondarchuk originally hails from the Kherson region himself. He finds a nuanced balance between slightly surreal fiction and keen documentarylike observations. Portrayed mostly by local nonprofession
al actors, the citizens of Beryslav seem to live in a completely different reality.
Slowly but surely Lukas becomes more comfortable in this rural setting. That’s when Volcano begins to warm up to the idea that being in Beryslav isn’t so bad after all. Bondarchuk even slips in some valuable moments of fantastical bliss, like the ecstatic performance by
an exotic strongman in the local community center. The tension of the opening never dissipates completely – echoes of the annexation of Crimea can be felt throughout the film – but just as the cargo ship in the first shot moves away to leave an open space, so Volcano shows the joys one can find when society slowly slips out of sight. HE
Corridor TrafficSee you Tomorrow, god willing (Ainara vera, Spain, 2017)
Can the everyday life of elderly women be monotone and fascinating at the same time? Ainara Vera’s documentary See You Tomorrow, God Willing shows it can, depicting the lives of seventeen elderly nuns: their work and leisure, thoughts and problems, a life of sincerity punctuated by humorous incidents and clever quips. They make bracelets and excellent embroidery, while also doing some amateur painting. Not a minute without work!
The “corridor traffic” in the monestary never stops: doors open and close like clockwork,
the women come together and go their seperate ways again. At times they take a moment to share some of their most urgent problems: for instance, the bedroom must always be in order and spotless, because what if something happens to you on the street that day? All you’ll leave behind will be a messy bedroom.
Vera follows the nuns with love and patience. Despite the film’s restrained color palate and humble setting, the overall tone is not grey at all. Poems are read, letters are written, and important thoughts are exchanged – about someone’s kids and future plans. The women often joke around and make fun of each other and of the camera that’s constantly on their tails. They don’t complain a lot and seem to be happy to be living in their own harmonious and amiable little world, away from everyone else. Another little world is found in an old cookie tin, in which photos from the past are kept. Many of the sisters will someday find themselves here along with the many whose names have been forgotten, perhaps forever. DM
Unintended Consequencesfortuna (germinal roaux, Switzerland, 2018)
Snowy mountains shot in gorgeous blackandwhite form the backdrop of this slowburning movie about growing up fast. Ethiopian immigrant Fortuna is only fourteen years old, which gives her problems in more than one way. The Catholic monastery high in the Alps that provides refuge to the group of asylum seekers that she’s part of is not equipped to take care of unaccompanied minors. The care supervisor wants to move her to a foster family, but Fortuna refuses.
While the girl is as secretive as any adolescent, she can’t hide the reason behind her refusal for long: she’s in love, and to a 14yearold, that’s nothing less than a matter of life and death. Her age also poses a problem for the farfrompassive object of her infatuation, though only in retrospect, after he finds out about the unintended consequence of their brief affair.
The film’s setting naturally inspires philosophical musing on faith – religious or otherwise. The moral issues that director Germinal Roaux addresses in his second feature are most explicitly expressed by brother Jean (empathetically played by Bruno Ganz) as he discusses the meaning of their calling mwith the monks, or Fortuna’s fate with the refugee care supervisor. Roaux's own faith in his main character also tacitly underlies this quiet study of the way the outwardly unperturbed Fortuna deals with her inner turmoil. SK
Like Father, Like SonTransparent world (vakhtang Kuntsev-gabashvili, georgia, 2017)
The makingof documentary has been an integral part of film history. For cinephiles, it’s often a pleasure to watch how other people make movies. This is also true for Transparent World, which shows how 26yearold Beka and his father make their first film together. At Beka’s age,
most people are confident, selfsufficient and responsible. But Beka isn’t there yet, although Transparent World doesn’t specify why that may be.
Using their film project as a case study, Georgian director Vakhtang KuntsevGabashvili’s documentary is actually about how this boy is gearing up for adult life. There’s moments of joy during the collaboration between father and son, but there’s also great tension. For Beka making the documentary is
a litmus test: he needs to pull this off to prove (mostly to himself) that he’s able to live life as an adult. His father, however patient and understanding, often has to tolerate heated arguments when things don’t work out the way Beka plans.
Of course, film directors sometimes have to be tyrants. But in Transparent World family and cinema always intersect, making it somewhat unclear whether Beka is being an angry director or simply an upset son. HE
‘The film is like a chorale’In her feature-length documentary debut See you Tomorrow, god willing, Ainara vera paints a cheerful and loving portrait of a community of elderly franciscan nuns.
Spanish filmmaker Vera visited the convent regularly over the course of a year and a half, and even ended up living and sleeping there for a couple of weeks to be able to capture every part of its daily rhythm. Vera found her subject very nearby, as one of the nuns living in this community is her aunt. “Still, I had never crossed the threshold – I would always pick her up and drop her off when I met her.”
It was only after she got stuck on an entirely different, more conceptual idea for a documentary, that she decided to look at the life beyond the gate of this convent. “Contrary to what I expected, they were very open and respectful to
wards me, even though I don’t share their beliefs. Most of their lives they’ve been working with vulnerable people who are failed by the social system, so I think they’ve adapted their beliefs to a very practical level. They don’t get lost in concepts.”
Intending to shoot a portrait of her aunt, Vera soon found that this would be an absurd approach. “They’re a community, that’s how they think and talk, so I had to show that. The film is like a chorale.” A recurring motif is the corridor that connects the individual rooms to the communal living area. “I soon realized that the corridor would provide the structure of the film, as the place where their communal life starts. Apart from the room of a bedridden woman, I didn’t film inside their cells.”
Their lives may have slowed down, but the women have clearly not lost their cheerful and industrious nature. “One of my main problems was that they always wanted to take care of me, even while I was filming them”, Vera recalls. “I shot some great scenes that I couldn’t use because in the middle of the shot one of them would turn to me and ask: ‘Do you want coffee?’” SK

Splendid Semi-Isolationdistant Constellation (Shevaun mizrahi, US/Turkey/Netherlands, 2017)
Somewhere in Istanbul, a deep construction pit gapes right beside an elegant findesiècle building that houses an old people’s home. Inside its walls, life moves at a quiet and frail pace. Filmmaker Shevaun Mizrahi, also a longtime volunteer at the facility, follows that pace in order to shine a light on the residents’ personalities and inner worlds. It’s as if she allows us to listen in on the memories of joy and sorrow that they entrust her, and to discover the fullness of these lives that have now become reduced to reminiscing.
With a simple digital camera and a painterly use of light, Mizrahi creates scenes that are stripped of the more generic aspects of old age, highlighting instead the individual experiences of her compelling protagonists: a visually impaired photographer who still holds on to his camera; a pianist who revels in
the memories of his amorous adventures; an Armenian woman still haunted by the history of the genocide.
A hint of surrealism can be felt in a recurring scene in an elevator where two friends discuss such esoteric subjects as the existence of al
ien life and the hereafter. Subtle ambient sounds accompanying shots of empty corridors might suggest they live in a place of splendid isolation, but Mizrahi also brings her camera outside, where the community of builders exudes a very different vibe. SK
Ode to Resiliancewith the wind (Arthur Sahakyan, Armenia, 2018)
To festival visitors, lake Sevan is known mostly as a welcome retreat to cool off from the Yerevan heat. For Arpine, the protagonist of With the Wind, Sevan is everything else. As a fisherwoman, these waters provide her with her livelihood. Working among rugged men, it’s also the place where this sole female fisher has to prove herself on a daily basis.
Debuting director Arthur Sahakyan gives both Arpine and lake Sevan the starring roles in this documentary about the tense dynamic between humans and nature, which he created as his graduation film at the Yerevan State Institute of Theater and Cinema. Shots taken from the depths of the vast lake open With the Wind, along with titles that remind us how easily fishermen can die here. What follows is a majestic ode to the resilience of Arpine and her colleagues, who face death every day to make their own way of life. HE
The Weight of Dark Secretsyeva (Anahid Abad, Armenia/Iran, 2017)
Debuting director Anahid Abad has found a striking way to address the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Yeva, this year’s Armenian submission to the Oscars (and only the country’s sixth submission of all time). Abad uses the conflict over the Karabakh region as an opaque background – not neces
sarily seen, but always felt – in front of which the drama of Yeva unfolds.
The eponymous single mother arrives in a remote mountain village with her only daughter Nareh, carrying with her the weight of dark secrets. Trying to lay low, but sticking out like a sore thumb, Yeva goes about her daily routine of visiting the postal office to see if her fake passports and visa have arrived. While she’s planning for a new future, she’s still chained to her past. Abad skilfully peels the historical layers of this story by slowly coming to an emotional core of Yeva that has to do with a family crisis during the war with Azerbaijan. HE
Priceless SunsetsSunset Truck (Abolfazl Saffary, Iran/germany, 2018)
They call it an 8star hotel, with the sun being their biggest star. Using the incredible sunrises and sunsets in a remote Iranian border region as their calling card, a family revamps the area into a mustvisit retreat where tourists, locals and friends can enjoy the wealth of the world.
Through a cunning social media strategy Arash, the youngest in this family of entrepreneurs, finds a way to attract even more people.
But as business is taking off, new problems arise. This family only looks at the area as a resource, while others see different uses for it. Through a mysterious new guest with a complicated backstory, Iranian director Abolfazl Saffary spins a heartfelt tale about the dynamic between fugitives, refugees and tourists that all pay their own price to be part of this place with a priceless sun. Tough Traditionsdede (mariam Khatchvani, georgia/Qatar, 2017)
“Bro, she has a crush on you, so we won’t have to kidnap her.” This offhand remark between two soldiers returning home introduces us to the decidedly patriarchal traditions in Svaneti, a remote region in northwestern Georgia which is the setting for Mariam Khatchvani’s debut feature Dede.
Although the protagonist of the film is a young woman, Dina, the film starts out with the men who will come to fight over her. It’s 1992, and war buddies David and Gegi are returning from battle. David is set to wed Dina in a marriage arranged by her grandfather. But it turns out Gegi and Dina have met before, and have fallen headoverheels in love.
This love triangle becomes the starting point for a classically composed drama, acted mostly by a nonprofessional cast from Svatneti. Dede mainly centers on the many hardships women face in this society – the film’s title is Svanesh for “mom”. Although Dine is at the center of the story, with not just David and Gegi but also childhood friend Girshel vying for her love, she has very little say in her own fate or future. Local traditions dictate that under some circumstances, men have the right to kidnap single women, and widows are forced to wed the first man who proposes marriage to them.
But Khatchvani, a native of the Svaneti region herself, is not interested in simply judging this society’s tough traditions, which will feel backwards to many. As she writes in a director’s statement, Svaneti is also “something of a paradise”, and her love for her home ground and its rich folklore is felt just as strongly as her outrage at its stifling customs. Looking for Freedomwe Are our mountains (Arnaud Khayadjanian, france/Armenia, 2017)
For this documentary, named after the famous monument also known as tatikpapik which is a symbol of national ride in the selfproclaimed Republic of Artsakh (initially named NagornoKarabakh), Francebased director Arnaud Khayadjanian travels to the Caucasus mountains to make portraits of various inhabitants there. They are still looking for a
form of freedom in this highly contested area. But instead of focusing on the tolls of war, Khayadjanian rather reveals how together these people give shape to ordinary daytoday life.
In beautifully framed, static shots he asks poets, archivists, choreographers, ministers and humanitarian aides to expound on what’s it like to be a part of Artsakh. Their shared experiences, all told in a reflective voiceover, are like the legendary monument near Artsakh’s capital itself: a capsule that captures what it means to be a proud citizen of Artsakh. HE
