SYLLABIFICATION

French words are generally divided at the end of a line according to units of sound or syllables. A French syllable generally begins with a consonant and ends with a vowel. If a single consonant comes between to vowels, the division is made before the consonant.ExemplesPotable : po-ta-ble malade : ma-la-de bateau : ba-teau

3

SYLLABIFICATION

Note 1: A division cannot be made either before or after x or y when x or y come between two vowels.

 Exemple: tuyauexact

4

SYLLABIFICATION

If two consonants are combined between two vowels, the division is made between the two consonants.Exemples: ballade: bal-la-de danser : dan-ser

Note 2 : If the second consonant is r or l, the division is made before the two consonants.

Exemple: sable: sa-blepropre : pro-pre

5

SYLLABIFICATION

If three or more consonants are combined between vowels, the division is made after the second consonant.

Exemple:

compter: comp-ter

instable: ins-ta-ble

obstacle: obs-ta-cle

6

SYLLABIFICATION

Two vowels may not be divided.

 Exemple:

espion: es-pion oasis : oa-sis

Nor can there be a division immediately after l’, j’, t’ or m’.

Exemple: J’aime l’arbret’aider
