New High Yielding Rice Varieties “TDK6 & TDK7”

Abstract

Rice is the most important staple food crop. Approximately 92% of the total riceproduction is from the lowland environment (2003). Annual rice production greatlyfluctuates due to its rain fed-base condition. From 1996, by increasing irrigated lowlandrice area and combining high yielding rice variety (HYV) with appropriate cultivationtechnology, the annual rice production has been gradually increased.

In year 1993, the first glutinous HYV variety TDK1 was released by the national riceresearch program. This was followed by TDK3, 4, 5, TSN1, PNG1 and NTN1. Thesevarieties were largely adopted by the farmers in different provinces in the whole country.In 2003, 2 new HYV were released, named TDK6 and TDK7. The 2 HYV wereselected from the crosses IR70824 and IR68101. The progenies selection was conductedat the Agriculture Research Center since 1994 by bulk and pedigree methods. Thefixed lines selected were tested through the testing net work in the whole country. Fromthe final test, 2 glutinous promising lines were selected. These gave average yield from3-6 t/ha, good eating quality and moderate reaction to major pest and diseases. Allthese characteristics similar to the standard check TDK1, but the milling quality in theirrigated dry season is better than TDK1. TDK7 performed better than TDK6 in thedrought prone areas of the central and southern provinces. In present, the two HYV,TDK6 and TDK7 are becoming popular in central and southern provinces of Laos.
