Noun (ค านาม) หมายถึง สิ่งที่ใช้เรียกชื่อคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานท่ี ได้แก่

คน : James, Mary, man, student, nurse, doctor, etc.

สัตว ์ : dog, cat, lion, panda, elephant, fish, buffalo, etc.

สิ่งของ : telephone, computer, television, book, pen, etc.

ค านามสามารถจ าแนกได้หลายประเภทดังนี ้

1. ประเภทของค านามแบ่งตามลักษณะการใช้ ได้แก่

1.1 Common Noun (ค านามทั่วไป) คือ นามที่ใช้เรียกชื่อคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานท่ี โดยทั่วๆ ไป ไม่ได้ระบุช่ือชี้เฉพาะเจาะจง เช่น

girl = เด็กผู้หญิง cat = แมว bird = นก animal = สัตว์ student = นักเรียน furniture = เครื่องเรือน

1.2 Proper Noun (ค านามชี้เฉพาะ) คือ ชื่อเฉพาะของคน สัตว์

สิ่งของ สถานท่ี มักจะเป็นค านามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยตัวอักษรตัวใหญ่ เช่น

Thailand = ประเทศไทย

Elizabeth = อลิซาเบธ George = จอร์จ

Sony = โซนี Siam Paragon = สยามพารากอน

America = อเมริกา Samsung = ซัมซุง

Bangkok = กรุงเทพฯ

2. ประเภทของค านามแบ่งตามการนับ ได้แก่

2.1 Countable Noun (ค านามนับได้) แบ่งออกเป็น 2 รูป คือ

เอกพจน์ (Singular) ใช้เรียกค านามที่สามารถนับได้ 1 จ านวน กล่าวคือ มี 1 สิ่ง 1 ตัว 1 เดียว เช่น

a girl = เด็กผู้หญิงหนึ่งคน an egg = ไข่หนึ่งฟอง a table = โต๊ะหน่ึงตัว

พหูพจน์ (Plural) ใช้เรียกค านามที่สามารถนับได้มากกว่า 1 จ านวน ขึ้นไป เช่น

two girls = เด็กผู้หญิงสองคน three eggs = ไข่สามฟอง four tables = โต๊ะสี่ตัว

2.2 Uncountable Noun (ค านามนับไม่ได้) เป็นค านามที่มีรูป

ไม่แน่นอน ไม่สามารถจับต้องได้ มีรูปเอกพจน์เพียงแค่รูปเดียว เช่น

sugar = น้ าตาล water = น้ า coffee = กาแฟ rice = ข้าว milk = นม soup = ซุป

oil = น้ ามัน hydrogen = ไฮโดรเจน

oxygen = ออกซิเจน ink = น้ าหมึก

hair = ผม bread = ขนมปัง


ถ้าต้องการจะนับปริมาณ หรือจ านวนของค านามนับไม่ได้ จ าเป็นต้องน า

ภาชนะมาบรรจุใช้หน่วย ชั่ง ตวงวัด หรือใช้หน่วยการนับเป็นกลุ่มก้อน เป็นช้ินมาแสดงปริมาณ เช่น

น าภาชนะมาบรรจุ เช่น a bottle of milk = นม 1 ขวด

two bottles of milk = นม 2 ขวด

three bottles of milk = นม 3 ขวด

a cup of tea = ชา 1 ถ้วย two cups of tea = ชา 2 ถ้วย

three cups of tea = ชา 3 ถ้วย

ใช้หน่วย ชั่ง ตวง วัด เชน่ a kilo of rice = ข้าว 1 กิโล

two kilos of rice = ข้าว 2 กิโล three kilos of rice = ข้าว 3 กิโล

a liter of water = น้ า 1 ลิตร two liters of water = น้ า 2 ลิตร

three liters of water = น้ า 3 ลิตร

ใช้หน่วยการนับเป็นกลุ่มก้อนหรือเป็นช้ิน เช่น a piece of paper = กระดาษ 1 แผ่น

two pieces of paper = กระดาษ 2 แผ่น

three pieces of paper = กระดาษ 3 แผ่น

a bar of chocolate = ช็อกโกแลต 1 แท่ง two bars of chocolate = ช็อกโกแลต 2 แท่ง

three bars of chocolate = ช็อกโกแลต 3 แท่ง

หลักการเติม –s หรือ –es ท้ายค า

เมื่อค านามมีรูปเป็นพหูพจน์ ค านามนั้นมักจะเติม –s หรือ –es ท้ายค า โดยมีหลักดังนี้

1. ค านามนับได้เอกพจน์โดยท่ัวไปมักเติม –s ที่ท้ายค าได้เลย เช่น

bag bags = กระเป๋า tiger tigers = เสือ car cars = รถยนต์ school schools = โรงเรียน

2. ค านามนับได้เอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย s, ss, sh, ch, x, o ให้เติม -es

ที่ท้ายค า เช่น

bus buses = รถประจ าทาง glass glasses = แก้ว bush bushes = พุ่มไม้ church churches = โบสถ์ box boxes = กล่อง tomato tomatoes = มะเขือเทศ

ข้อยกเว้น ค านามเอกพจน์ท่ีลงท้ายด้วย o แต่หน้า o เป็นสระ (a, e, i, o, u) ให้เติม – s ที่ท้ายค า เช่น

radio radios = วิทยุ bamboo bamboos = ต้นไผ่


3. ค านามนับได้เอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย y ให้เปลี่ยน y เป็น i แล้วเติม -es

ที่ท้ายค า เช่น

country countries = ประเทศ baby babies = เด็กทารก

ข้อยกเว้น ค านามเอกพจน์ท่ีลงท้ายด้วย y แต่หน้า y เป็นสระ

(a, e, i, o, u) ให้เติม -s ที่ท้ายค า เช่น

key keys = กุญแจ toy toys = ของเล่น

4. ค านามนับได้เอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย f, fe ให้เปลี่ยน f, fe เป็น v

แล้วเติม -es เช่น

leaf leaves = ใบไม้ knife knives = มีด

ข้อยกเว้น ค านามเอกพจน์บางค าลงท้ายด้วย f, fe แต่สามารถเติม -s

ได้เลย เช่น handkerchief handkerchiefs = ผ้าเช็ดหน้า

5. ค านามนับได้เอกพจน์บางตัวเมื่อเปลี่ยนเป็นพหูพจน์จะเปลี่ยนรูปไปเลย เช่น

man men = ผู้ชาย woman women = ผู้หญิง tooth teeth = ฟัน child children = เด็ก goose geese = ห่าน mouse mice = หนู foot feet = เท้า ox oxen = วัว louse lice = เหา


6. ค านามนับได้เอกพจน์บางตัวมีรูปเหมือนกันท้ังเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์ เช่น

fish = ปลา salmon = ปลาแซลมอน sheep = แกะ deer = กวาง mackerel = ปลาทะเลแมคเคอเรล

7. ค านามต่อไปนี้มีรูปเป็นเอกพจน์เสมอ

news = ข่าว baggage = กระเป๋าเดินทาง furniture = เครื่องเรือน knowledge = ความรู้ information = ข้อมูล

8. ค านามต่อไปนี้มีรูปเป็นพหูพจน์เสมอ scissors = กรรไกร trousers = กางเกงขายาว glasses = แว่นตา clothes = เสื้อผ้า pajamas = ชุดนอน
