About Simply Chassidus
Simply Chassidus releases one ma’amar of the Rebbe each month with
English translation and commentary. Each ma’amar is divided into
three sections, each of which can be learned in approximately one
hour. By learning one section per week, usually on Shabbos morning,
participants can finish one ma’amar per month, with time to review the
ma’amar on Shabbos Mevarchim.
Simply Chassidus is written by Simcha Kanter and is a project of
Congregation Bnei Ruven in Chicago under the direction of Rabbi
Boruch Hertz.
The translation of the ma’amar was reviewed with Rabbi Fischel Oster
in the zechus of refuah shleima for .

Section One
The Rebbe said this ma’amar on the night following Simchas Torah in
5738 (1977). This ma’amar is based on ma’amarim of the Frierdiker
Rebbe and explains both the way that we celebrate Simchas Torah as
well as the time of the year that we celebrate Simchas Torah.

The Rebbe begins by referencing a question asked by the Frierdiker
Rebbe:
Question One:
If the Torah is described as “your wisdom and your understanding in
the eyes of the [other] nations”, why do we celebrate Simchas Torah
by dancing with the sefer torah while it is closed (rolled up and covered
by its decorative cloth) rather than [opening it up and] learning Torah?
The Rebbe points out that the fact that we celebrate with the Torah
while it is closed enables more people to be involved in the
celebration:
The fact that we dance with the Torah while it is closed enables all Jews
(regardless of their familiarity with the “wisdom and understanding” of
the Torah) to join in the celebration. Furthermore, we see that even
people who don’t have any apparent connection to the (wisdom and
behaviors contained in the) Torah during the rest of the year are drawn
into the joyous celebration of Simchas Torah.
The fact that the joy of Simchas Torah is connected to all Jews is also
reflected in the fact that we dance with the written Torah (as opposed
to the oral Torah, such as the Mishna and Gemara).
Halacha states that a Jew needs to make a brocha (Blessed are You…
Who gives the Torah) before reading from the written Torah even if he
doesn’t understand what he is reading. (This is in contrast to the oral
Torah, in which case it is only considered a mitzvah if the person
understands what he is reading.)
Since the Torah of Truth states that a Jew needs to make a brocha
even if he doesn’t understand what he is reading, this means that he
is truly performing a mitzvah when he reads. This includes the spiritual
accomplishment of the mitzvah – he draws down (implied by the word
“boruch", which can also mean “to draw down”) the ohr ein sof – and
even Hashem’s essence (as the phrase in the brocha “Who gives us the
Torah” can also be translated as “the Giver of the Torah”, referring to
His essence) – into the Torah that he “learns” (reads).
The Rebbe adds an additional question (asked by the previous
Rabbeim):

Question Two:
Why do we celebrate Simchas Torah on Shmini Atzeres (and, outside of
Israel, on the second day of Shmini Atzeres)? Wouldn’t it be more
appropriate to celebrate it on Shavuos, the Yom Tov that celebrates the
Giving of the Torah?
The Rebbe explains these questions based on an answer given by the
Frierdiker Rebbe:
The Frierdiker Rebbe answers this question by quoting the following
Midrash:
It would be more fitting for the “Atzeres of Sukkos” (Shmini
Atzeres) to be fifty days after Sukkos just like the “Atzeres of
Pesach” (Shavuos, which is called “Atzeres” in the Torah) is fifty
days after Pesach.
However, since the season changes from summer to winter
during the time of Sukkos, these days make traveling more
difficult. (Meaning, the Jews would need to return from
Yerushalayim to their homes after Sukkos and then travel back
again to Yerushalayim during the winter, which is more
difficult.)

The Midrash then explains this through an analogy:
This can be compared to a king who has many daughters;
some of them are married and live far away, and some of them
are married and live close by.
One day, all of them came to greet their father the king. The
king said, “The married daughters who live nearby have the
ability to travel back and forth, [but] the married daughters
who live far away don’t. Since they are all here, I will make one
yom tov and rejoice with all of them.”
The Midrash concludes:
So too, on “Atzeres of Pesach” (Shavuos), since the summer is
coming and the Jews will have the ability to travel [they can
return in fifty days for Shavuos]. But on “Atzeres of Sukkos”,
since the winter is coming… they won’t be able to travel.
Instead, Hashem said, “Since they are all here, I will make one
yom tov and rejoice [with them].”
The Rebbe explains the meaning of the “one day” on which all the
daughters came to greet their father the king:

The “daughters of the king” are the “daughters of tzion and
Yerushalayim”, which refer to the souls of the Jewish people. All of
them come to “greet their Father the King” on the “one day” of Yom
Kippur.
The “one yom tov” which the King makes for the Jews refers to the day
of Simchas Torah (which was established on the “Atzeres of Sukkos”,
Shmini Atzeres). This day of Simchas Torah is “one day” which
corresponds to the “one day” of Yom Kippur (as will be explained
throughout this ma’amar).
In order to explain the unique connection between the “one day” of
Yom Kippur and Simchas Torah, the Rebbe reviews how the theme of all
the holidays in Tishrei have the theme of “one” (as the Rebbe explained
in another ma’amar that year before Sukkos):
Regarding Rosh Hashanah, the Mishnah says, “The mitzvah of the day
[of Rosh Hashanah] is the shofar.” Meaning, even though the day of
Rosh Hashanah is extremely holy, its it only has one mitzvah – the
mitzvah of the shofar.

Furthermore, the Rambam comments on the mitzvah of blowing the
shofar saying that “it is a scriptural decree” which is beyond human
logic. Even though the Rambam goes on to explain that the mitzvah
of blowing the shofar hints to many lofty concepts of teshuva,
nevertheless, the mitzvah itself is a simple decree of the King which
transcends human logic.
[Editor’s note: Throughout this section, the Rebbe refers to examples
of things that are “one” because they are either singularly unique,
express the concept of unity, or are beyond limitation. These three
concepts are all connected, as they all express the concept of the
essence (the aspect of “oneness”) which is uniquely beyond limitation,
and can therefore affect unity within other things.
In this example, the mitzvah of blowing the shofar is “one” because it
is beyond the limits of human intellect, as human intellect
understands concepts by defining them and breaking them down into
multiple details.]

Similarly, Yom Kippur (the completion of the “Ten Days from Rosh
Hashanah to Yom Kippur”) has within it the concept of “one” on the
three dimensions of space, time, and “people”:
• The unique service of Yom Kippur is performed in the Kodesh
HaKadoshim (the “Holy of Holies”, the most inner chamber of
the Bais HaMikdash), the ultimate example of “one” within the
dimension of space.
• The Torah refers to Yom Kippur as “achas ba’shana” (the
“singular day of the year”), the ultimate example of “one” within
dimension of time.
• The service of Yom Kippur is performed by the Kohen Gadol
(as an emissary of the entire Jewish people), and the Torah says
that Aaron (the first Kohen Gadol) “was separated, to be
sanctified as most holy”, the ultimate example of “one” within
the dimension of people.

Similarly, the main mitzvah of the Yom Tov of Sukkos has within it the
concept of “one”, as seen in the main mitzvah of dwelling in a sukkah
(which starts at the first moment of the holiday and lasts throughout
the entire festival). Commenting on the fact that a Jew is also able to
fulfill his obligation to dwell in a sukkah by using a communal sukkah,
the Gemara states, “(By taking turns,) all of Yisroel is fitting to dwell in
one sukkah.”

This concept of “one” can also be seen in the mitzvah of the daled
minim (the “four species” – the lulav, esrog, hadassim, and aravos).
Chassidus explains that the concept of “one” is reflected in each one
of these four species:
• The lulav leaves need to be bound together as one.
• The hadassim leaves need to be three leaves in each group that
grow from one point.
• The aravos come from branches that grow together (all
pointing up in the same direction, and not branching out in
“separate” directions).
(The esrog will be explained in the following paragraph.)
[The mitzvah of the daled minim also reflects this on a spiritual level, as
the spiritual accomplishment of this mitzvah is to draw down the level
of makkif (the level of “one” which is beyond limitation) into the level of
pnimius (the limits of creation).]

This idea of unity is stressed to an even greater degree in the esrog,
which is mentioned in the Torah as the first of the four species (and
the order of something in Torah is also significant), showing that it is
the primary example of this unity.
The Torah calls the esrog a “pri eitz hadar” (a “beautiful fruit”), and the
Gemara comments that the word hadar (“beautiful”) can also be
interpreted as “that dwells”, implying that an esrog is a fruit “that dwells
on its tree from year to year”. (Unlike other fruits, the esrog remains
on the tree throughout all the seasons of the entire year – and
throughout multiple years.) In addition to being able to tolerate all
four seasons, it also grows from all four seasons. (Therefore, the esrog
contains within it the unity of growth from all four seasons.
This is greater than the unity of the other three species, as they are the
unity of multiple units – leaves or branches – that are bound or joined
together, whereas the esrog unites (and grows from) the different (and
opposite) seasons, and joins them into a single entity.
Additionally, this higher degree of unity is drawn down from the esrog
into the other three species, as reflected in the fact that the Gemara
learns that all of the four species needs to be “hadar” (“beautiful”,
which also represents the unity of the growth from “dwelling” for
multiple seasons within a single entity) from their association with the
esrog.

Furthermore, in addition to the fact that each one of the daled minim
individually represent the concept of unity, the mitzvah of the daled
minim is to bind them together. As explained elsewhere in Chassidus,
the four species in the daled minim represent four different types of
Jews, and binding them together represents the unity of the Jewish
People who become “a single group to do Your will with a complete
heart”.
The Rebbe explains how this level of unity – which is reflected in the
celebration of the “one day” of Simchas Torah – can be achieved:
This unity of all the Jewish people can be achieved in a true and
permanent way through the service of teshuva. The concept of teshuva
is beyond all limitations, as seen in the fact that it can be accomplished
in “one moment and one second”. (In contrast, within the limits of
nature, bigger accomplishments take a longer time to achieve. Since
teshuva is an extreme change, it should “naturally” take a very long
time to achieve. The fact that teshuva can be accomplished in a single
moment shows that it is beyond the limits of creation.)

This amazing power of teshuva can be seen in the difference between
the first and second luchos (tablets with the Ten Commandments) that
were given to the Jewish People.
The first set of luchos, which represent the Torah “on its own” (the
Giving of the Torah without the teshuva of the Jewish People), were
only “earned” because Moshe Rabbeinu spent forty days on Har Sinai
to receive them – and this was in addition to the seven weeks of sefiras
ha’omer which also prepared them for the Giving of the Torah.

The second set of luchos, which represent the Torah which is earned
through teshuva, were earned in a single moment (as a result of the
Jews’ teshuva for the sin of the Golden Calf). Even though Moshe also
spent forty days on Har Sinai before receiving the second luchos (which
would seem like a preparation to receive the Torah), the (main) focus
of these forty days from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur was (not
to prepare for the Torah, but rather) to have Hashem forgive the Jews
“with joy and a complete heart”.
The fact that teshuva is beyond all limitations (as seen from the fact
that it can be accomplished in a single moment) is a result of that fact
that teshuva reaches the innermost essence of the soul, which is
beyond all limitation. This is the level of “one” (which causes teshuva
to be accomplished in “one moment”) within the soul.
This explains why teshuva is able to unite all the types of Jews together
as one:
Teshuva is able to unite all Jews “from the heads of your tribes to your
woodchoppers and water-drawers” in a way that “you all stand
together” and become “kings” over the limits of creation. (The phrase
“nitzav melech” literally means “a nitzav [governor] was king”, but here
is interpreted as “you stand [nitzav] as a king”.)
This starts with the fact that the Jews are written and sealed for a good
and sweet year – one in which the good is expressed in an obvious and
revealed way in the physical world and within everyday life.
When this level of unity is reached through teshuva – revealing the
essence of the soul – the resulting revelation doesn’t differentiate
between spirituality and physicality or higher and lower things (as they
are all considered equal in comparison to the essence). Therefore, it
equally effects things which are within the limits of creation and things
which are beyond the limits of creation.
We are now able to understand the meaning of the “one day”
mentioned in the Midrash which corresponds to Yom Kippur and
Simchas Torah:
When the Midrash says that “One day, all of them came to greet their
father the king”, this refers to Yom Kippur – the “one day of the year”
(and also the level of “one” within the dimensions of “space” and
“people”, as explained earlier). Because on Yom Kippur the Jews serve
Hashem with teshuva, revealing the essence of their souls which unites
them together, therefore the King responds, “Since they are all here
[and have united as one], I will make one yom tov and rejoice [with
them].
We are now able to answer both of the questions from the beginning
of the ma’amar:
Question One:
If the Torah is described as “your wisdom and your understanding in
the eyes of the [other] nations”, why do we celebrate Simchas Torah
by dancing with the sefer torah while it is closed (rolled up and covered
by its decorative cloth) rather than [opening it up and] learning Torah?
Answer to Question One:
When Hashem makes “one day” to rejoice with all the Jews equally (as
they are all united by the level of “one” within them – their essence),
we celebrate with the essence of the Torah (the level of “one” within
the Torah) as it exists beyond the intellect, as every Jew’s connection
to this level is equal. Therefore, we all dance with the Torah while it is
closed on Simchas Torah.
Answer to Question Two:
The celebration of the “one day” of Simchas Torah happens as a result
of the Jews being united by connecting to the level of “one” (the
essence of the soul) within them. Because this revelation happens
during the month of Tishrei – specifically through the “one day” of Yom
Kippur – Simchas Torah is celebrated during Tishrei (on Shmini Atzeres).
Even though this level of unity exists beyond the limits of creation, it
also needs to be brought into the limits of creation:
This inspiration of the essence of the soul which is beyond all limitation
needs to be drawn down into the limited aspects of the soul as well.
(This parallels the way that the essence is revealed is through limited
physical actions as well – physically dwelling in the sukkah, taking the
daled minim, and dancing with one’s feet on Simchas Torah.)
This is why the Torah first says that “you are all standing today”
(referring to Rosh Hashanah), representing the Jews as they are all
united through their essence (regardless of their external differences),
and then lists the ten different categories of Jews from “the heads of
your tribes” to “your woodchoppers and water-drawers”. This implies
that the unity that comes from the essence of the Jews also needs to
be evident within them as they each exist with their own unique
qualities.
Just like this is true on the dimension of “people” (the fact that we are
united in essence needs to be expressed through our unity as we are
individuals), so too this needs to be accomplished on the dimension of
“time”.
The “one day” holidays of Yom Kippur and Simchas Torah need to
affect all the days of the year (starting with the day after Simchas
Torah, the day that this ma’amar was said). Even within a Jew’s
everyday life (even his mundane activities) he should always be
obvious that he “just came from the ‘one day’ of Yom Kippur and
Simchas Torah”.
Despite the fact that many days, weeks, or months may have passed
since Yom Kippur and Simchas Torah, the inspiration of the “one day”
holidays of Yom Kippur and Simchas Torah should not fade away and
needs to remain in their full intensity. This is possible because the Jew
is coming from a level of “one day” which is beyond division or changes,
the level of “I am Havayah – I have not changed.” (The level of “I am
Havayah” reflects the essence of G-dliness which is not changed or
affected by the existence of creation.)
When the “one day” which is above all limitation affects all the days of
the year (representing the limitations of time), this also brings the “one
day” to a higher level. (In addition to the fact that it is beyond the limits
of creation when it is beyond creation, it can also express the fact that
it is beyond creation when it is within the limits of creation.)
This parallels the unity of the esrog explained in the previous section –
the esrog grows from (and not only tolerates) all the different seasons,
showing that it can express the concept of unity within the limits of
creation.
The Rebbe then gives a brocha to all the Jewish People:

May it be Hashem’s will that all of the above will be fulfilled for each
and every Jew within the Jewish People – that they should have a good
and blessed year with obvious and revealed practical goodness in this
physical world. They should have abundant blessings for children,
health, and livelihood – both on a physical and spiritual level (as the
physical results from the spiritual).

Immediately after Simchas Torah, the Jews will begin the service of
“and Ya’akov went on his way” with joy and a glad heart, which
represents the transition into everyday mundane activities after the
holidays of Tishrei.
(The concept of “and Ya’akov went on his way” also applies to a certain
extent after Yom Kippur (the first “one day”), but primarily focuses on
mitzvos, as all Jews are involved in the mitzvah of preparing for Sukkos
during the four days between Yom Kippur and Sukkos. In contrast,
after the second “one day” of Simchas Torah, a Jew transitions into
everyday mundane life.)

This means that on every single day – weekdays and certainly on
Shabbos and Yom Tov (including Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) – all
of his activities (both his general approach as well as his individual

actions) will be infused with the essential point of the innermost core
of his soul, which is connected to the innermost essence of G-dliness.
The Rebbe concludes:

Since this approach comes from Simchas Torah, and “joy breaks all
boundaries” and is above all limitations, it will break through and
eliminate each person’s individual galus (limitations) as well as the
actual galus of the entire Jewish People.
May we speedily merit “may our eyes see Your return to Tzion with
mercy” with the complete and true geula through Moshiach Tzidkeinu,
and he will come and speedily (in our days) lead us to our land, build
the Bais HaMikdash in its place, and gather all the Jews scattered
throughout the world – until Hashem will “transform the nations (to
speak) a pure language… and serve Him with a single purpose”, and
“kingship will belong to Hashem.”
