The purpose of this work is to find inner connections which exist between different
parts of speech in scientific vocabulary; to define the main thematic groups in which the
scientific vocabulary is divided and in such a way to give the research some regulation;
to connect the thematic analysis with the building analysis of the corresponding units
providing learning vocabulary in the scientific language.
On the basis of systematic analysis of scientific verbs, nouns and adjectives in the
scientific texts we can make a conclusion about the systematic nature of scientific
vocabulary as verbs, nouns and adjectives in the scientific texts are set clear enough in a
systematic, relative, regulated system. Terminological vocabulary is the basis of any
scientific text. On the one hand a term, having qualities which are characteristic for the
units of semiotic system, aspires to synonymy. On the other hand a term is a language
unit of science. As a result the same term can enter various terminologies of a language.
Significance of a term is the main reason for appearing and replenishing of synonymous
series.
Scientific vocabulary forms the only morphologic system. Each lexical unit doesn’t
function separately but as a part of this morphologic system. Phrasal verbs are widely
used in the English scientific language. A phrasal verb can have specific terminological
meanings which an ordinary verb itself can’t have. In scientific texts phrasal verbs are
preferred to ordinary verbs.

analyse, apprehend, consider, reason, regard, solve, suppose і так далі;
- дієслова, що виражають дію і стан, пов’язані з об’єктом дослідження,
наприклад: arise, belong, coincide, depend, diverge, exist, remain, result, serve,
express, outline, point, report, state.
дослідження: application, arrangement, classification, distribution, elaboration,
investigation, research, treatment і тaк далі; 2) стан (характеристика) суб’єкта:
appreciation, attitude, consideration, doubt, intelligence, reason, sense, standpoint і так
8
далі; 3) стан (характеристика) об’єкта: availability, complexity, contradiction,
exception, feature, importance, level, order, problem, process, reaction, relation і так
point out, to pick up, to set up, to make up, to take off, to give up, to turn out і т. д.,
Візьмемо таку просту фразеологічну одиницю, як to go to
bed, яка не має нічого спільного з to go to table; to go to bed означає «лягати
спати», вона ізольована, ідіоматично відділена від інших подібних
словосполучень, в той час як to go to table зовсім не означає «сісти за їжу».
При співставленні фразових дієслів з фразеологічною одиницею стає
зрозумілою принципова відмінність між ними.
Привертає увагу і значна продуктивність фразових дієслів. Це стає очевидним
з дієсловом to point out. The students should also be able to point out the principal
parts of the problems. Can we point out anything that is definitely wrong? The teacher
points out the length, the width and the height of the classroom. We have to point out a
way of finding a prime different from all primes.
to get along означає to advance, to approach old age, to make progress, to live
harmoniously or pleasantly; to get in означає to bring or drive into stockyard, to be
elected (as Member of Parliament), to succeed in planting, to enter into relations, to take
part, to become involved, to be skilful by practice, to complain formally; to get off
означає to start on a journey or in a race, to leave a train, to leave place of work
(school)with permission, to remove, to escape punishment, to succeed in uttering, to
deliver (a speech), to make a poor start, to make a bad first impression; to get up
11
означає to rise from a seat (bed), to mount on horseback, to increase in force or
violence, to make presentable, to organize, to make a special study, to dress, to produce,
to reach, to improve, to bring into existence, etc.
Коли ми починаємо досліджувати матеріали словників, із яких взяті дані
приклади, природно виникає питання, чи можуть такі неконкретні одиниці
(значення яких розкриваються лише в контекстах) розглядатися для наукового
тексту як оптимальний спосіб вираження відповідних значень. Чому за таких
умов надають перевагу фразовим дієсловам ніж більш точним і семантично більш
повноцінним романським дієсловам, коли ми говоримо to build up замість to form,
to carry on – to continue, to carry out замість to perform?
12
achievement; arrange – arrangement. Досить продуктивним способом утворення
іменників є конверсія, наприклад: to approach – an approach; to change – a change.
В результаті цієї частини морфологічного аналізу можна зробити висновок, що
фактично всі іменники, що виражають активний вплив на об’єкт дослідження, є
віддієслівними.
Щодо іменників, які виражають стан суб’єкта, то, хоча тут також є багато
іменників із суфіксом [n], але вони втратили свій дієслівний характер і є менш
активними. Тому вони відрізняються, не дивлячись на зовнішню подібність, від
розглянутих утворень на [n], наприклад: associate – association; imagine –
imagination. Деякі іменники із суфіксом [n] фактично не мають прямого
морфологічного зв’язку з дієсловами, наприклад: conception, notion. Такі іменники
як attitude, idea взагалі не співвідносяться з дієслівними основами. Досить велика
кількість іменників утворена від прикметників за допомогою різних суфіксів або
13
тісно пов’язана з ними за значенням: conscious – consciousness; mental – mentality;
competent – competence; proficient – proficiency.
accessibility; available – availability; real – reality; similar – similarity; superior –
superiority.
Узагальнюючи результати морфологічного аналізу слів, які означають
повідомлення результатів дослідження, передачі інформації, варто відмітити, що
більшість цих слів являються типовими словами дії. Переважають тут іменники,
утворені від дієслівної основи за допомогою суфіксів [n], [ςn], [eiςn]: communicate
– communication, define – definition, explain – explanation.
При аналізі прикметників досить чітко виділяється велика кількість
прикметників, утворених від дієслів за допомогою суфікса [әbl]. Наприклад accept
– acceptable; apply – applicable; avail – available; conceive – conceivable.
Разом з тим цілий ряд прикметників латинського походження, які
зустрічаються в наукових текстах, утворені за допомогою суфіксів: [iv] –
conclusive, deductive, effective, extensive; [tәri] – explanatory, introductory; [әri] –
supplementary; [it], [әt] – elaborate, intermediate, separate; [әnt] – divergent,
significant.
14
Морфосинтаксичний аналіз дієслів показав, що серед них зустрічається немало
таких, які функціонують здебільшого в тій чи іншій формі, тобто зустрічаються не
однаково часто в різноманітних граматичних формах. Деякі дієслова, наприклад,
в основному вживаються у формі дієприкметника минулого часу. Наприклад: to
accept – generally accepted fact; to cite – a really cited author; … not all the material
cited are well known.
Інші дієслова зустрічаються в складі фразеологізмів – кліше, таких як we are
concerned with, as follows, generally speaking, otherwise stated, as has already been
stated.
Зустрічаються також дієслова, які вживаються як самостійно, так і в складі
фразеологічних одиниць. Наприклад: to let – let us say that, let alone; to begin - …
we begin our investigation …, to begin with ….
Морфосинтаксичне вивчення наукової лексики дозволило виділити так звані
тріади – дієслово – іменник – прикметник. Наприклад: to elaborate – an elaboration
– elaborate. Thus we elaborate the theoretical premises …; … the elaboration of optimal
systems of communication is a large branch of industry; … by observing some of the
language …. Дієслово to elaborate в значенні ретельно розробляти семантично
тісно пов’язане в науковому тексті з іменником elaboration – ретельна розробка і з
прикметником elaborated – ретельно розроблений.
Теж саме можна сказати про тріаду to explain – an explanation – explanatory, де
дієслово в значенні пояснювати знаходиться в семантичному зв’язку з іменником
пояснення і прикметником пояснювальний.
We have consistently tried to explain the connection between the content and
expression of a word …; His explanation of the law is much more difficult than …; …
Dictionary definitions are no more than explanatory descriptions of something ….
Поряд з тим зустрічаються випадки, коли існує стійкий безпосередній зв’язок
між дієсловом і іменником, в той час як прикметник, утворений від тієї ж основи,
або взагалі не існує, або семантично не пов’язаний з нею. Наприклад: We do not
do it because we are really setting out to analyze in detail…; although both an utterance
15
and a definition are longer than a word and analyzable into words, they are basically
different.
Деякі дієслова в науковому тексті взагалі не мають словотворних зв’язків,
оскільки і прикметник, і іменник утворені від них, або не використовуються в
науковій мові, або семантично не пов’язані з ними. Наприклад, іменник base не є
репрезентацією дієслова to base, так як і прикметник basic не є репрезентацією
даного дієслова: Scientific linguistics can’t be based on words. The base of the
argument… Linguistics is a science in its own right, with its own subject, its own basic
categories…
однієї науки. Наприклад, термін solution в хімії означає: 1) розчинення (процес);
2) розчин. В таких випадках контекст відіграє важливу роль в правильному
розумінні значення.
If the insoluble barium salts are removed by filtration we obtain a dilute solution of
hydrogen peroxide in water.
The solution of barium salts in acids is a dangerous process.
digit, cipher; число - number, quantity, integer, date; розряд - order, class, rank,
category, digit, discharge; символ – symbol; знак - sign, symbol, mark; figure –
символ, цифра; number – число, кількість; integer – ціле число; symbol – символ,
знак; sign – знак, символ; mark – знак, мітка; order - порядок, послідовність; class -
клас; rank – ранг, розряд, клас; category – категорія, клас; discharge – заряд, розряд;
circuit; графік - graph, diagram, chart, schedule.
Range – радіус, область, сфера, діапазон, інтервал, амплітуда; область - domain,
region, range, scope, system; радіус - radius; сфера - sphere; діапазон - range,
compass, spectral band, span; інтервал - interval; амплітуда - amplitude; domain -
область; region – область, зона, сфера, район; scope – область, сфера, обхват;
system – система, сукупність, множина; compass – циркуль, круг, окружність,
компас; span – відстань, протяжність, лінійна оболонка;band – полоса, стрічка;
To account for
To build up
To cancel out
To carry on
To carry out
To carry through
To cut off
To find out
To go on
To look around
To look back
To look up
Почну із найпростішого і найпоширенішого в науковому тексті випадку to
account for something. Фразового дієслова to account for немає, дієслово to account
потребує твердого дієслівного управління: воно завжди управляє наступним
іменним словом за допомогою прийменника for. Фразове дієслово другим
елементом має прислівник, а не просто прийменник. Слід також пам’ятати про
здатність дієслів з прийменниками легко переходити в пасивну форму.
20
Цілком іншу ситуацію представляє сполучення to build up, яке може вживатися
як в прямому, так і в переносному значенні.
For the record, we call a sequence built up by adding the same number to each member
(term) in turn an arithmetic series.
First let us look at another family of series built up from its top row in the same way.
The fact illustrates one recipe for obtaining reliable rules to calculate any term of series
without the labour of building it up step by step.
To build up – типове фразове дієслово.
Тепер розглянемо цілком інший випадок: to cancel out. Сполучення to cancel out
не є фразовим дієсловом, тому що воно позбавлене ідіоматичності. Якщо
застосувати просто to cancel замість to cancel out, то значення речення суттєво не
поміняється. Оut – це природний допоміжний модифікатор. Але to cancel out в
математичній мові, очевидно, служить для більш точного вираження відповідного
математичного поняття, коли недостатньо просто сказати to cancel, а важливо
показати, як воно, ніби-то «виймається», «вишпурюється». Саме тому до дієслова
to cancel додається out і утворюється таке специфічне сполучення, яке, будучи
колись утвореним, ввійшло в мову, хоча і не стало фразовим дієсловом. To cancel
out – це вільне сполучення дієслова to cancel з прислівником out, яке виявилося
термінологічно потрібним математикам.
Дієслово to cut off – дуже поширене, але швидше в тому ж плані вживання, що
і українське дієслово «відрізати», тому що to cut off можна розуміти і в самому
простому і в переносному значенні. Наприклад:
As the frustum is generated by cutting off from a cone a smaller cone, so its lateral
surface is the difference of two full conical surfaces.
Фразове дієслово to cut off означає «відрізати від конус» (буквально
«відрізатися»). Але, виявляється, можна не лише відрізати частину від конуса і
отримати таким чином якусь фігуру, але відрізати голову королю.
King Charles walked and talked half an hour after his head was cut off.
To find out – це цілком стале фразове дієслово.
We try to find out which kind of triangle we should introduce.
21
He may manage to find out, however, that a mathematical problem may be as much fun
as a crossword puzzle.
To go on означає «продовжувати», «відбуватися». Це стійке фразове дієслово,
яке часто зустрічається в різних стилях мови. To look around, to look at, to look for
могли би просто розглядатися як дієслова з прислівниками.
We have to look around for closely related problems; we look at the unknown; we look
for a formerly solved problem which is linked to our problem.
Але в мові ці словосполучення набули стійкості і дуже часто вживаються в
переносному значенні.
Let us look around for something new. (Чи не пригледіти собі щось новеньке.)
Look around for a simpler analogous problem. (Чи не пошукати нам більш простої
аналогічної проблеми?)
В цих випадках To look around повністю ідіоматичне фразове дієслово.
Складний випадок являє собою дієслово to look up. Як дізнатися чи це фразове
дієслово? В даному випадку варто застосувати просодичний аналіз. Ми кажемо:
we look up a word in the dictionary, з чого слідує, що to look up – це фразове
дієслово. Тоді чому дієслово to look up має якісь особливі труднощі? Тому що to
look до певної міри є полісемантичним дієсловом. Як же дізнатися, що to look after
або to look for – це не фразові дієслова, а look in, look up – фразові? Давайте
порівняємо:
At this stage we are looking only for a digit або it was natural that mathematicians
should look for simpler formulae. Цілком по іншому ми читаємо таке речення, як…
and look up the article in the dictionary.
Отже, якби не існувала специфічна глобальна семантика в look up the article in
the dictionary або look up something in reference book, або look up at your house,
можна було б сказати, що to look up – це звичайне вільне словосполучення, як
наприклад в реченні: He raised his head and looked up the vertical wall; He could look
up the chimney. В даному випадку to look up явно не фразове дієслово.
У всіх прикладах, взятих із технічних, природничих текстів, дієслово to carry
out – типове, монолітне, фразове дієслово, при цьому ідіоматичне за змістом: to
22
carry out означає «виконувати», «здійснювати». To carry без out не може означати
«виконувати», «здійснювати» - це ідіоматична одиниця. Хоча, якщо підійти до
слова to carry out з позиції глобальності його значення, то воно може просто
означати «виносити». Наприклад: Carry out this furniture! We decided to carry out
this furniture out.

Geometry
Geometry (Ancient Greek: γεωμετρία; geo- "earth", -metri "measurement") "Earth-
measuring" is a branch of mathematics concerned with questions of shape, size,
relative position of figures, and the properties of space. Geometry is one of the oldest
mathematical sciences. Initially a body of practical knowledge
concerning lengths, areas, and volumes, in the 3rd century BC geometry was put into
an axiomatic form by Euclid, whose treatment—Euclidean geometry—set a standard
for many centuries to follow. Archimedes developed ingenious techniques for
calculating areas and volumes, in many ways anticipating modern integral calculus.
The field of astronomy, especially mapping the positions of the stars and planets on
the celestial sphere and describing the relationship between movements of celestial
bodies, served as an important source of geometric problems during the next one and
a half millennia. A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a
geometer. The introduction of coordinates by René Descartes and the concurrent
development of algebra marked a new stage for geometry, since geometric figures,
such as plane curves, could now be represented analytically, i.e., with functions and
equations. This played a key role in the emergence of infinitesimal calculus in the
17th century. Furthermore, the theory of perspective showed that there is more to
geometry than just the metric properties of figures: perspective is the origin
of projective geometry. The subject of geometry was further enriched by the study of
intrinsic structure of geometric objects that originated with Euler and Gauss and led
to the creation of topology and differential geometry. In Euclid's time there was no
clear distinction between physical space and geometrical space. Since the 19th-
century discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, the concept of space has undergone a
radical transformation, and the question arose which geometrical space best fits
physical space. With the rise of formal mathematics in the 20th century, also 'space'
(and 'point', 'line', 'plane') lost its intuitive contents, so today we have to distinguish
30
between physical space, geometrical spaces (in which 'space', 'point' etc. still have
their intuitive meaning) and abstract spaces. Contemporary geometry
considers manifolds, spaces that are considerably more abstract than the
familiar Euclidean space, which they only approximately resemble at small scales.
These spaces may be endowed with additional structure, allowing one to speak about
length. Modern geometry has multiple strong bonds with physics, exemplified by the
ties between pseudo-Riemannian geometry and general relativity. One of the
youngest physical theories, string theory, is also very geometric in flavour. While the
visual nature of geometry makes it initially more accessible than other parts of
mathematics, such as algebra or number theory, geometric language is also used in
contexts far removed from its traditional, Euclidean provenance (for example,
in fractal geometry and algebraic geometry).
Practical geometry
Geometry originated as a practical science concerned with surveying, measurements,
areas, and volumes. Among the notable accomplishments one finds formulas
for lengths, areas and volumes, such as Pythagorean
theorem, circumference and area of a circle, area of a triangle, volume of
a cylinder, sphere, and a pyramid. A method of computing certain inaccessible
distances or heights based on similarity of geometric figures is attributed to Thales.
Development of astronomy led to emergence of trigonometry and spherical
trigonometry, together with the attendant computational techniques.
Axiomatic geometry
Euclid took a more abstract approach in his Elements, one of the most influential
books ever written. Euclid introduced certain axioms, or postulates, expressing
primary or self-evident properties of points, lines, and planes. He proceeded to
rigorously deduce other properties by mathematical reasoning. The characteristic
feature of Euclid's approach to geometry was its rigor, and it has come to be known
as axiomatic or synthetic geometry. At the start of the 19th century the discovery
of non-Euclidean geometries by Gauss, Lobachevsky, Bolyai, and others led to a
31
revival of interest, and in the 20th century David Hilbert employed axiomatic
reasoning in an attempt to provide a modern foundation of geometry.
Geometric constructions
Ancient scientists paid special attention to constructing geometric objects that had
been described in some other way. Classical instruments allowed in geometric
constructions are those with compass and straightedge. However, some problems
turned out to be difficult or impossible to solve by these means alone, and ingenious
constructions using parabolas and other curves, as well as mechanical devices, were
found.
Numbers in geometry
The Pythagoreans discovered that the sides of a triangle could have
incommensurable lengths. In ancient Greece the Pythagoreans considered the role of
numbers in geometry. However, the discovery of incommensurable lengths, which
contradicted their philosophical views, made them abandon (abstract) numbers in
favor of (concrete) geometric quantities, such as length and area of figures. Numbers
were reintroduced into geometry in the form of coordinates by Descartes, who
realized that the study of geometric shapes can be facilitated by their algebraic
representation. Analytic geometry applies methods of algebra to geometric questions,
typically by relating geometric curves and algebraic equations. These ideas played a
key role in the development of calculus in the 17th century and led to discovery of
many new properties of plane curves. Modern algebraic geometry considers similar
questions on a vastly more abstract level.
Geometry of position
Even in ancient times, geometers considered questions of relative position or spatial
relationship of geometric figures and shapes. Some examples are given by inscribed
and circumscribed circles of polygons, lines intersecting and tangent to conic
sections, the Pappus and Menelaus configurations of points and lines. In the Middle
Ages new and more complicated questions of this type were considered: What is the
maximum number of spheres simultaneously touching a given sphere of the same
32
radius (kissing number problem)? What is the densest packing of spheres of equal
size in space (Kepler conjecture)? Most of these questions involved 'rigid'
geometrical shapes, such as lines or spheres. Projective, convex and discrete
geometry are three sub-disciplines within present day geometry that deal with these
and related questions. Leonhard Euler, in studying problems like the Seven Bridges
of Königsberg, considered the most fundamental properties of geometric figures
based solely on shape, independent of their metric properties. Euler called this new
branch of geometry geometria situs (geometry of place), but it is now known
as topology. Topology grew out of geometry, but turned into a large independent
discipline. It does not differentiate between objects that can be continuously
deformed into each other. The objects may nevertheless retain some geometry, as in
the case of hyperbolic knots.
Geometry beyond Euclid
Differential geometry uses tools from calculus to study problems in geometry.
For nearly two thousand years since Euclid, while the range of geometrical questions
asked and answered inevitably expanded, basic understanding of space remained
essentially the same. Immanuel Kant argued that there is only one, absolute,
geometry, which is known to be true a priori by an inner faculty of mind: Euclidean
geometry was synthetic a priori. This dominant view was overturned by the
revolutionary discovery of non-Euclidean geometry in the works of Gauss (who
never published his theory), Bolyai, and Lobachevsky, who demonstrated that
ordinary Euclidean space is only one possibility for development of geometry. A
broad vision of the subject of geometry was then expressed by Riemann in his
inauguration lecture Über die Hypothesen, welche der Geometrie zu Grunde
liegen (On the hypotheses on which geometry is based), published only after his
death. Riemann's new idea of space proved crucial in Einstein's general relativity
theory and Riemannian geometry, which considers very general spaces in which the
notion of length is defined, is a mainstay of modern geometry.
33
Dimension
Where the traditional geometry allowed dimensions 1 (a line), 2 (a plane) and 3 (our
ambient world conceived of as three-dimensional space), mathematicians have
used higher dimensions for nearly two centuries. Dimension has gone through stages
of being any natural number n, possibly infinite with the introduction of Hilbert
space, and any positive real number in fractal geometry. Dimension theory is a
technical area, initially within general topology, that discusses definitions; in
common with most mathematical ideas, dimension is now defined rather than an
intuition. Connected topological manifolds have a well-defined dimension; this is a
theorem (invariance of domain) rather than anything a priori. The issue of dimension
still matters to geometry, in the absence of complete answers to classic questions.
Dimensions 3 of space and 4 of space-time are special cases in geometric topology.
Dimension 10 or 11 is a key number in string theory. Exactly why is something to
which research may bring a satisfactory geometric answer.
Symmetry
The theme of symmetry in geometry is nearly as old as the science of geometry itself.
The circle, regular polygons and platonic solids held deep significance for many
ancient philosophers and were investigated in detail by the time of Euclid. Symmetric
patterns occur in nature and were artistically rendered in a multitude of forms,
including the bewildering graphics of M. C. Escher. Nonetheless, it was not until the
second half of 19th century that the unifying role of symmetry in foundations of
geometry had been recognized. Felix Klein's Erlangen program proclaimed that, in a
very precise sense, symmetry, expressed via the notion of a transformation group,
determines what geometry is. Symmetry in classical Euclidean geometry is
represented by congruences and rigid motions, whereas in projective geometry an
analogous role is played by collineations, geometric transformations that take straight
lines into straight lines. However it was in the new geometries of Bolyai and
Lobachevsky, Riemann, Clifford and Klein, and Sophus Lie that Klein's idea to
'define a geometry via its symmetry group' proved most influential. Both discrete and
34
continuous symmetries play prominent role in geometry, the former
in topology and geometric group theory, the latter in Lie theory and Riemannian
geometry. A different type of symmetry is the principle of duality in for instance
projective geometry (see Duality (projective geometry)). This is a meta-phenomenon
which can roughly be described as: replace in any theorem point by plane and vice
versa, join by meet, lies-in by contains, and you will get an equally true theorem. A
similar and closely related form of duality appears between a vector space and its
dual space.
Modern geometry
Modern geometry is the title of a popular textbook by Dubrovin, Novikov and
Fomenko first published in 1979 (in Russian). At close to 1000 pages, the book has
one major thread: geometric structures of various types on manifolds and their
applications in contemporary theoretical physics. A quarter century after its
publication, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry and Lie
theory presented in the book remain among the most visible areas of modern
geometry, with multiple connections with other parts of mathematics and physics.
The morphology of Middle English verbs
Largely due to the circumstances described in middle English section, during the
Middle English period some dramatic changes in the structure of all morpho-syntactic
categories took place, making the English from one thousand years ago show
increasingly more resemblance to the English of today. As far as the verb is concerned,
the two key changes which affected it when passing from Old English to Middle
English were:
1) the reduction of inflectional endings, and
2) the shift of strong verbs to the weak paradigm.
The explanation of the notions and a presentation of the inflectional system of this
category will be provided in the following sections.
1. The inflection of verbs in Middle English
The Middle English verb in different syntactic contexts could take a finite (inflected) or
35
a non-finite (uninflected) form. The finite forms were inflected by means of suffixation,
i. e. the addition of inflectional morphemes to the end of the stem of a word, for the
following verbal subcategories:
mood: indicative, subjunctive, imperative;
tense: present, past;
number: singular, present;
person: first, second, third.
The non-finite forms, i.e. the forms unmarked for tense, number and person, were:
infinitive, past participle, present participle and gerund. From around Chaucer's time the
last two obtained more or less regularly the same ending -ing and so started to be
formally indistinguishable though functionally still different. Syntactically, the
infinitive and gerund functioned as nouns and the participles as adjectives. On the basis
of their inflections ME verbs are commonly classified into three groups: two major
ones, traditionally referred to as strong and weak, and a third one comprising a number
of highly irregular verbs (here referred to as MAD verbs, see below). The basic
difference between the first two groups lies in the way they form their past tense and
past participle. Strong verbs build them by means of a root vowel alternation (the so-
called ablaut) and the past marker of weak verbs is a dental suffix (usually -t, -d or -ed)
attached to the root, after which the inflectional endings marking the number/person are
added. Tables 1. and 2. present the paradigms of inflections for these two kinds of
verbs.

The third of the aforementioned groups consists of verbs that display a high degree of
irregularity and, according to Fisiak (1968: 99), may be further subdivided as follows:
Mixed, whose past inflections are partly strong and partly weak, represented by
only one verb: d n 'do'.
Anomalous, undergoing suppletion, that is the replacement of one stem with
another one, when forming the past and, in some cases, the present tense forms,
eg. g n 'go', b n 'be'.
Defective, whose chosen principal categories are lacking or extremely rare. None
of them, for instance, has the present participle and many lack the infinitive. All
of them, except for will, are the continuation of Old English preterite-
presents. Can/con 'I can', dar 'I dare' can be quoted as the examples of such verbs.
One of the alternative subdivisions of this set of verbs, proposed in many ME
grammars, is made on diachronic rather than synchronic grounds, which means that
the ME verbs are classified according to the formal properties they had in OE (none
of these verbs is a borrowing). Thus, the subclassification continues the Old English
37
one and goes as follows: preterite-presents, e.g. can/con, dar, and anomalous verbs: g
n, b n, will. Finally, as this group of verbs is rather complicated morphologically
and problematic when it comes to their detailed description and classification, they
will be labeled in this paper as MAD, 'MAD' being an acronym formed from the
initial letters of the names of the three subgroups. Thus, a convenient term is coined,
which makes it easy to refer to the set of discussed verbs as a whole.
2. The classification of Middle English verbs
English verbs have undergone a significant restructuring from the time when Old
English was spoken: most of the OE strong verbs, i.e. those forming the past (participle)
through the process of ablaut, went into the weak category. The examples of such verbs
can be mainly found in ME, therefore the shift can be said to have happened throughout
the Middle English period although some instances of shifted verbs occurred already in
OE texts. The explanation for this process should be looked for in the following factors:
phonological, due to the extensive sound changes; a blurred distinction between strong
and weak verbs with respect to their inflectional endings; systemic, i.e. the irregularities
within the strong verb system; and extra-linguistic such as the misinterpretations of
English grammatical rules made by the French acquiring the English tongue. The shift
of a verb from one category to another was accompanied by the growth of the number
of irregularities within the strong verb system, which in turn accelerated the process
itself. The disintegration of the ablaut system and attempts at fitting most strong verbs
into the weak paradigm must have changed the perception of ablaut from systemic
feature to an irregularity. Consequently, in the 14th century any productivity of the
strong category is lost and therefore the distinction should rather be made between
regular (productive) and irregular (unproductive) verbs with some additional group
from which other categorial sets, e.g. modals, will later emerge. Owing to the fact that
this paper concerns the language of the text from the end of the 14th century, the
following classification will be adopted:
a) irregular verbs - forming the past by means of ablaut or by the addition of a
dental suffix or by the change of a stem vowel and, in some cases, of a stem
38
consonant, e.g. kepen - kept, cachen - kaught. The latter originate from a
distinctive subgroup of OE weak verbs. This category was a source for modern
irregular verbs.
b) regular verbs - forming the past tense and past participle by the productive
rule of the addition of a dental suffix. They are ancestral to regular verbs in
Modern English.
c) MAD verbs - the remains of OE anomalous and preterite-present verbs,
described in more detail in the previous section of this chapter.
In the database one more group is isolated that is not treated in this paper separately. It
includes a small number of verbs (five) which do not occur in the text in any form that
would allow their classification and external sources of information indicate that they
were conjugated by Chaucer in his different works either as regular or irregular. Such a
distinction of the group makes it quick and easy to trace and retrieve these verbs from
the database.
Theory of relativity
This article is about the scientific concept. For philosophical or sociological theories
about relativity, see Relativism. For the silent film, see The Einstein Theory of
Relativity. Two-dimensional projection of a three-dimensional analogy of space time
curvature described in General Relativity. The theory of relativity, or simply relativity,
encompasses two theories of Albert Einstein: special relativity and general relativity.[1] However, the word "relativity" is sometimes used in reference to Galilean invariance.
The term "theory of relativity" was based on the expression "relative theory"
(German: Relativtheorie) used by Max Planck in 1906, who emphasized how the theory
uses the principle of relativity. In the discussion section of the same paper Alfred
Bucherer used for the first time the expression "theory of relativity"
(German: Relativitätstheorie).
Scope
39
The theory of relativity enriched physics and astronomy during the 20th century. When
first published, relativity superseded a 200-year-old theory of mechanics elucidated
by Isaac Newton. It changed perceptions. For example, it overturned the concept
of motion from Newton's day, into all motion is relative. Time was no longer uniform
and absolute, as related to everyday experience. Furthermore, no longer could physics
be understood as space by itself, and time by itself. Instead, an added dimension had to
be taken into account with curved space time . Time now depended on velocity, and
contraction became a fundamental consequence at appropriate speeds. In the field of
microscopic physics, relativity catalyzed and added an essential depth of knowledge to
the science of elementary particles and their fundamental interactions, along with
introducing the nuclear age. With relativity, cosmology and astrophysics predicted
extraordinary astronomical phenomena such as neutron stars, black holes,
and gravitational waves.
Two theory view
The theory of relativity was representative of more than a single new physical theory. It
affected the theories and methodologies across all the physical sciences. However, as
stated above, this is more likely perceived as two separate theories. There are some
related explanations for this. First, special relativity was published in 1905, and the final
form of general relativity was published in 1916. Second, special relativity fits with and
solves for elementary particles and their interactions, whereas general relativity solves
for the cosmological and astrophysical realm (including astronomy).
Third, special relativity was widely accepted in the physics community by 1920. This
theory rapidly became a notable and necessary tool for theorists and experimentalists in
the new fields of atomic physics, nuclear physics, and quantum mechanics. Conversely,
general relativity did not appear to be as useful. There had appeared to be little
applicability for experimentalists as most applications were for astronomical scales. It
seemed limited to only making minor corrections to predictions of Newtonian
gravitation theory. Its impact was not apparent until the 1930s.
40
Finally, the mathematics of general relativity appeared to be incomprehensibly dense.
Consequently, only a small number of people in the world, at that time, could fully
understand the theory in detail. This remained the case for the next 40 years. Then, at
around 1960 a critical resurgence in interest occurred which has resulted in making
general relativity central to physics and astronomy. New mathematical techniques
applicable to the study of general relativity substantially streamlined calculations. From
this, physically discernible concepts were isolated from the mathematical complexity.
Also, the discovery of exotic astronomical phenomena in which general relativity was
crucially relevant, helped to catalyze this resurgence. The astronomical phenomena
included quasars (1963), the 3-kelvin microwave background
radiation (1965), pulsars (1967), and the discovery of the first black hole candidates
(1971).
Special relativity
Special relativity is a theory of the structure of space time . It was introduced in Albert
Einstein's 1905 paper "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies" (for the
contributions of many other physicists see History of special relativity). Special
relativity is based on two postulates which are contradictory in classical mechanics:
1. The laws of physics are the same for all observers in uniform
motion relative to one another (principle of relativity),
2. The speed of light in a vacuum is the same for all observers, regardless of
their relative motion or of the motion of the source of the light.
The resultant theory agrees with experiment better than classical mechanics, e.g. in
the Michelson-Morley experiment that supports postulate 2, but also has many
surprising consequences. Some of these are:
Relativity of simultaneity : Two events, simultaneous for one observer, may not
be simultaneous for another observer if the observers are in relative motion.
Time dilation : Moving clocks are measured to tick more slowly than an
observer's "stationary" clock.
41
Length contraction : Objects are measured to be shortened in the direction that
they are moving with respect to the observer.
Mass–energy equivalence : E = mc2, energy and mass are equivalent and
transmutable.
Maximum speed is finite : No physical object or message or field line can travel
faster than light.
The defining feature of special relativity is the replacement of the Galilean
transformations of classical mechanics by the Lorentz transformations. (See Maxwell's
equations of electromagnetism and introduction to special relativity).
General relativity
General relativity is a theory of gravitation developed by Einstein in the years 1907–
1915. The development of general relativity began with the equivalence principle, under
which the states of accelerated motion and being at rest in a gravitational field (for
example when standing on the surface of the Earth) are physically identical. The upshot
of this is that free fall is inertial motion; an object in free fall is falling because that is
how objects move when there is no force being exerted on them, instead of this being
due to the force of gravity as is the case in classical mechanics. This is incompatible
with classical mechanics and special relativity because in those theories inertially
moving objects cannot accelerate with respect to each other, but objects in free fall do
so. To resolve this difficulty Einstein first proposed that space time is curved. In 1915,
he devised the Einstein field equations which relate the curvature of space time with the
mass, energy, and momentum within it.
Some of the consequences of general relativity are:
Clocks run more slowly in regions of lower gravitational potential. This is
called gravitational time dilation.
Orbits precess in a way unexpected in Newton's theory of gravity. (This has been
observed in the orbit of Mercury and in binary pulsars).
Rays of light bend in the presence of a gravitational field.
42
Rotating masses "drag along" the space time around them; a phenomenon termed
"frame-dragging".
The Universe is expanding , and the far parts of it are moving away from us faster
than the speed of light.
Technically, general relativity is a metric theory of gravitation whose defining feature is
its use of the Einstein field equations. The solutions of the field equations are metric
tensors which define the topology of the space time and how objects move inertially.
