Burmese security forces have again used gunfire to break up crowds of anti-government protestors in Rangoon. Witnesses say some of the protestors gathered Friday near the Sule Pagoda. [1] One protestor told VOA by telephone that police and soldiers used live ammunition and sticks against the crowd. On Thursday the government said its forces killed 9 people and wounded 11 others in its effort against the anti-government protests. A Japanese media worker was among the dead. Witnesses say Burma's military rulers have cut off internet connections in the country. Members of the opposition National League for Democracy also say two members of the party were arrested. Also Thursday Media Rights Groups said soldiers raided hotels of foreign media workers and closed newspapers that refused to publish government propaganda.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations has used unusually strong language to condemn Burma for its actions against anti-government protests. ASEAN urged Burma to stop the violence. [2] In Japan the government says it will decide if it will suspend humanitarian aid to Burma after it investigates the death of the Japanese media worker. Japan is the largest aid provider for Burma. Supporters of the pro-democracy movement in Burma have been demonstrating in Asian nations and around the world. The United States is urging China to press Burma to stop the violence. China has close economic ties with Burma.

[3] In Pakistan the Supreme Court has ruled against legal efforts to stop President Pervez Musharraf from seeking a new five-year term as president. The court's ninejudges ruled six to three against the efforts. Lawyers for the political opposition say they will appeal. Anti-government lawyers and opposition supporters waited nearby and shouted their disapproval after the ruling was announced. On Thursday General Musharraf officially became a candidate for president. Pakistan's presidential election is set for October 6th.

A South Korean negotiator says not much progress has been made after a day of talks on North Korea's nuclear program. South Korean official Chun Yung-woo spoke in Beijing. Earlier American official Christopher Hill said the talks have yet to produce agreement on what it means for North Korea to disable its nuclear equipment. [4] The nuclear talks involve the United States, North and South Korea, Japan, China and Russia.

The permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are meeting in New York to discuss actions against Iran for its nuclear program. American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is leading the meeting. European Union Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana is also attending the talks. [5] Britain, France and the United States want new measures to punish Iran. But Russia and China say Iran should be given more time to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
