Dear Parents / Carers,

A ‘model’ Haworth Residential

5RK spent three fabulous days in Haworth this week. They visited the Bronte Museum, Haworth church, researched the Bronte family history and the influence of the Merrill family on Haworth. The children were amazing- perfectly behaved, great company and not one ‘moan’! No complaints were heard during the 10km walk through a lot of mud nor during the climb up a very windy Penistone Hill! Once at the top the whole team sang Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights - the hills really were alive with the sound of

5RK’s wonderful rendition- ‘Heathcliff, it's me, your Cathy’.

The competition for King/Queen of ‘the hill’ was intense- with Miss King and Mrs. Jefferies just pipped to the post by Mr. Bickley- so the hill is still Bickley Hill for another year.

The last day saw the weather turn, so the whole team completed their work in the schoolroom and then they became very creative! Each group of children had ‘to dress’ the staff using only newspaper and sellotape. The competition was hot- but Miss King’s team were certainly deserved winners- the wedding dress, plus train, held by Sidney Hainsworth as her pageboy, and the catwalk, strewn with confetti, were outstanding.

Residentials are an important part of Gledhow but without the support of staff they wouldn’t happen. So, a HUGE thank you to Mr. Bickley, Miss King, Mrs. Montefiore, Miss Holroyd, Mrs. Jefferys, Mr. Welch, Mr. Dickson and Mr. Walker for their wonderful contribution to an amazing time.

Year 4 ……………………it’s your turn next!

Red Nose Day- Friday 24th March

Who remembers 1985? Live Aid? It captured our hearts and minds and we all knew that something more must be done to help people around the world. That something became Comic Relief. The idea was to use comedy to raise money and change lives in Africa and the UK. 32 years on- funding is still needed to help find effective ways to tackle poverty and injustice.

At Gledhow on Friday we are asking the children to bring in a donation and to wear their school uniform with pride but to………….customise it! Wear a red nose, paint your nose red, wear a red teeshirt, a red headband/ribbon in your hair, a red pair of socks/tights/shoes? So, wear your school uniform but with red accessories!

4SB’s Class Assembly

Thank you to all the parents, carers, grandparents and family friends who attended 4SB’s class assembly on Wednesday. They certainly saw an amazing group of children share their knowledge of the 1665 Plague! This was the worst outbreak of plague in England since the Black Death of 1348. London lost roughly 15% of its population. While 68,596 deaths were recorded in the city, the true number was probably over 100,000. Other parts of the country also suffered- great drama Oscar, Maeve, Shalini and Omari about the village of Eyam! The children made the gruesome facts ‘fun’ with song, dance and lots of oozing buboes!! Thank you to the Miss Black and her team (and of course the children) - it was fantastic!

Retirement

On Monday 20th March, we are sadly saying goodbye to Mrs Gill Rigg. Mrs Rigg has been at Gledhow for nearly 50 years! She started her ‘Gledhow career’ here as a schoolgirl! She returned as a Lunchtime Assistant and latterly as a Teaching Assistant. Gill has supported hundreds of children-taking 1:1 sessions, tens of intervention groups and always with one aim-to help each individual child learn. She supports their Social and Emotional needs- with a smile and ‘a hug’. ‘Gill is also a founding member of the Breakfast Club- and Hot Dog Wednesday won’t be the same without her! We wish Gill all the very best in her retirement. She has been a great friend to many families and staff. We shall miss here tremendously- the place will be quiet without her!

Children don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care’. Thank you for caring Mrs. Rigg.

Retirement announcement

We are also sad to announce that on Friday 28th April we are saying goodbye to Mr. D! There are hundreds of families proud to have known Mr. Keith Dickson, but there are also hundreds of children who have had been privileged to have him successfully-teach them, train them, manage their football and cricket teams. His reputation as a coach is not just city wide but also county and nationwide! Mr. D has been responsible for several Premiership/Championship Football players- men and women! He has coached Yorkshire cricket players and even an England captain!
