Some types of Jingisukan use lamb that has been pre-marinated in sauce, while others use unseasoned lamb, which is dipped in sauce before being eaten. Either way, Jingisukan is the dish of choice whenever locals gather in numbers. A dish that originated in Sapporo and is now hugely popular among locals and visitors alike, with countless restaurants serving their own original variations. The standard dish consists of spicy soup brimming with huge chunks of fresh local vegetables lightly fried in oil, along with a tender chicken leg or seafood, if you wish. Eaten with rice that is often included in the price but served in a separate bowl. Hokkaido is surrounded by seas that produce some of the finest seafood in the world, much of which can be found fresher than fresh in the restaurants of Sapporo. The city also boasts some of Japan’s finest sushi, and even at the more casual, conveyor-belt-style sushi bars, top-quality fresh toppings are served at reasonable prices. The delicious shrimp or scallop sushi is highly recommended. Ramen – or at least the broth – can be found in a variety of flavors, such as shio (salt), shoyu (soy sauce) and even curry, but Sapporo ramen is traditionally miso flavored. The deliciously rich taste complements the crinkly egg noodles perfectly. You’re never far from a ramen shop in Sapporo, and in some places, such as the famous downtown Ramen Alley, there are nothing but ramen shops! Various seasonal tours are available, as well as half-day, full-day, dining and night-view tours. All tours depart from and arrive at Sapporo Station Bus Terminal. Reservations required.

Ramen

Jingisukan (lamb barbecue)A popular local dish made with lamb or mutton grilled on a convex iron plate along with vegetables such as beansprouts, onions and green peppers. Some types of Jingisukan use lamb that has been pre-marinated in sauce, while others use unseasoned lamb, which is dipped in sauce before being eaten. Either way, Jingisukan is the dish of choice whenever locals gather in numbers.

A dish that originated in Sapporo and is now hugely popular among locals and visitors alike, with countless restaurants serving their own original variations. The standard dish consists of spicy soup brimming with huge chunks of fresh local vegetables lightly fried in oil, along with a tender chicken leg or seafood, if you wish. Eaten with rice that is often included in the price but served in a separate bowl.

Hokkaido is surrounded by seas that produce some of the finest seafood in the world, much of which can be found fresher than fresh in the restaurants of Sapporo. The city also boasts some of Japan’s finest sushi, and even at the more casual, conveyor-belt-style sushi bars, top-quality fresh toppings are served at reasonable prices. The delicious shrimp or scallop sushi is highly recommended.

Ramen – or at least the broth – can be found in a variety of flavors, such as shio (salt), shoyu (soy sauce) and even curry, but Sapporo ramen is traditionally miso flavored. The deliciously rich taste complements the crinkly egg noodles perfectly. You’re never far from a ramen shop in Sapporo, and in some places, such as the famous downtown Ramen Alley, there are nothing but ramen shops!
