“Wanna go for a walk?”I say those words and my twoAussies – Sam and Casey – beat meto the front door. This day, we’reheading out to explore the new two-acre Johnny Steele Dog Park at2929 Allen Parkway atMontrose/Studemont.

A group of thoughtful donorsoffered assurances that our bestfriends would have a scenic andexciting place to run and romp byfunding the city’s largest dog park.

The Johnny Steele Dog Park wasnamed in honor of a local landscapearchitect. It is part of the 160-acreBuffalo Bayou Park.

Dogs make a big splash here, thanks to two fenced-in pond areas –one for smaller pets and one for the

larger canines. There is a dog wash-ing station and a place offeringshade. It is lighted and opens at 7a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. daily.

Even if you don’t own a dog, youmight enjoy a stroll through – espe-cially on lovely spring days. I’veheard many say they like going forthe people – and dog-watching.

Thanks to the Buffalo BayouPartnership, improvements to theentire Buffalo Bayou Park will becomplete this summer. The park willfeature new trails, pedestrian bridges, kayak and bike rental stations andoverall landscape improvements.

April offers no shortages of thingsto do! Check out the various hometours scheduled this month -- and inearly May. Plus, gardeners have theirspades in hand, ready to plant andreap. Check out our Calendar forfree classes.

We feature LK and HelenGladden’s garden on page 76. Theyare the winners of our 2014 contest. What a lovely backyard retreatthey’ve created!

Happy spring days,Susan Fox

Dixie called me because she had seen abedroom I had done using the homeowner’sfurniture.

I just thought it was a great transformation on a budget,” sheexplains, noting that she thought I could help them re-work theirmaster bedroom.

Dixie and husband Robert chose to enlist the services of TedCurrier, a remodeling specialist who had worked on other rooms intheir house.

Safe to say, Dixie and Robert are no strangers to working with acrew.

They knew to expect a certain amount of disruption in theremodeling process of their bedroom’s narrow 12-foot by 19-footspace.

“I wanted a French look showing off the antique prints andplates that I collect,” she explains. “And I needed a consultation onhow to achieve my desires.

“It was obvious that our bedroom just did not feel ‘finished’,”says Dixie. I did not want the room overly ‘styled.’ I just wantedmore of a collected, casual look using some accessory pieces wealready owned.

“Obviously the flow of the room had to work—I just could notvisualize it.” She adds that they just were not moving forward ontheir own, and she was frustrated that the space was not “fin-ished.”

AFTER: Both curtains were made by Drapery Montage and the window is new. Itmatches the other one that had been replaced in an earlier remodeling. Restylingand reupholstering the sofa added necessary seating.

BEFORE: Dixie had already begun the remodeling when we met.

AFTER: : The addition of Dixie’s antique plates, and prints and French accessoriesfinished the space.

TIP: Since she hadpreviously painted herwalls with Wyeth BlueHC-143 BenjaminMoore HistoricCollection and loved it,we agreed that thecolor worked and werepeated it.

“We decided to raise theceiling to give the room a feel-ing of having more height, andthe sofa came from the livingroom. I recommended recov-ering it in off-white cotton, and it got restyled with alonger pleated skirt accentedwith covered buttons.

“Your attention to detailwas very helpful. I felt moreconfident in achieving mydesires after our meeting,” shesays.

“One of your suggestionsthat stood out was the ideathat the pocket door couldrecess into the wall. The con-tractor had decided it neededone to two inches. You told methat was not necessary. He haddone my other remodeling thesame way.”

WHAT TO KNOW AND CONSIDERBEFORE DIVING IN BY SUSAN FOX

If you don’t do your homework regarding swimming pools, youcould find yourself floundering in some deep water, according toone local pool expert.

First off, “your backyard may not be as big as it looks,” saysAndy Aspheeris at Cinco Pools. “Easements and building linesoften take up more property than many might expect.

“Houston and HOAs – homeowners associations – are prettystrict about observing these and rarely grant any encroachments,”he adds. “So check these boundary lines closely.”Wondering what type of pool to get? Thinking about a salt-waterpool?

Memories of green-tinged chlorine hair from earlier days alongwith mental images of having a piece of the beach right at yourdoorstep – even though they contain one-tenth the salt found inocean water – has upped the popularity of salt-water pools.

But the test of time reveals some possible problems. To be right up front, Aspheeris says salt over time can corrode

equipment and eat away at plasters, cement and stone surrounds. Additionally, the salt water can kill nearby plants and sterilize soils. While Aspheeris refers to these types as chlorine-generated pools, other sources call them salt-water systems.

Salt-water systems do make chlorine, thanks to the pricey gener-ator needed to convert the salt. However, the levels are lower inconcentration and less offensive than traditional pools. The water issofter; there is no chlorine smell.

Additionally, salt-water pools still may require products to helpmaintain a pH balance.

Jim Sere at Blue Haven Pools & Spas, say they sell what is calleda SmartPure system that “gives you sparkling, silky soft water with-out the chlorine effects of red eyes, dry skin and the harsh chemicalodor.

“Instead of chlorine and salt water pools, we offer a ‘full menu’purification system that incorporates ionic conversion, ozone andUV, which kills 99 percent of pathogens,” says JoAnne Cronin atCreative Pool Design.

WHAT’S TRENDINGSome industry surveys suggest that homeowners have begun tosimplify their designs. There has been an upswing in installing moretraditional pools; those with simpler lines.

“Swimming pools are starting to look like swimming pools, not lagoons,” says Aspheeris, noting a trend that mirrors nationalopinions.

With that said, Stephanie Jackson at Adams Tile & Plastersays they still see a large number of people wanting rock water-falls, spas and other bells and whistles.

“Slides and diving boards are somewhat passé,” says Cronin.“Waterfalls, beach entries, laminar jets, and raised walls withsheer cascades which provide the sound of falling water withoutthe expense of a waterfall remain popular.

“The most popular added amenity is a fire pit – with or without remote ignition – with a bench around it,” she says.

Gunite or concrete pools are more popular than fiberglass.“We specialize only in gunite pools,” says Jackson. They are

highly durable and can be created in any shape.Fiberglass pools, on the other hand, offer limited design

options, and they can crack when the Earth shifts. On theupside, they are nonporous and more resistant to algae.

Jackson says more pool owners “seem to be selecting traver-tine coping and Pebbletec plaster.”

“The item that drives cost the most on a pool project is thechoice of material and amount of paving,” adds Cronin. “Mostcustomers select upgraded plaster with crushed quartz, which last

longer (as much as 20 years), if properly taken care of asopposed to standard white marble dust.”

According to Sere, pool buyers may want to look into suchpopular features as anti-bacterial filters, water- and energy-effi-cient pumps and heaters, handheld remote controls to auto-mate pools and spa operations, in addition to LED lighting.

ADDED THOUGHTS“Pool designs should follow rules of safety, functionality andprimary end-use, such as exercise lanes for lap swimmers,” saysDon Peak at Reflection Pools.

“Most pools are built for general use or multi-purpose,such as a dedicated baby area or diving area,” he says.

“Pools depths should be deep as necessary; most are notover 5-to 6-feet deep.”

When planning a start-to-finish timeframe, note that con-struction time is 30 to 60 days, depending on weather.

“We have many customers who take the approach of start-ing with a master plan that will be executed incrementally,”says Cronin. “They look at the big picture that allows themto start by building the pool and then add the peripheral itemslater.”

Boulevard Oaks Tudor RevivalA Salute to a Pioneering Woman Builder;

Historic Katharine Mott Home Majestically Restored, Open for TouringBy Susan Fox • Photography by Carl Mayfield

When recently talking about his good fortune to bepart of the restoration of a Katharine Mott house – andthe homeowners’ initial consideration to phase-in reno-vation work – architect Reagan Miller shares a truthabout restoration projects.

“When you start pulling the yarn out of a sweater, you needto see it through,” says Miller, a principal of Miller,Dahlstrand DeJean Architects (MDD).

Steve Howe bought the home in 1996. But it was not untilthe end of 2008 that Howe and wife Alicia Blaszak Howegave the green light for MDD to completely restore the 1928Tudor Revival-style home located in the Boulevard OaksHistoric District, which has been included on the NationalRegister of Historic Places.

The extensive project took two years to complete. The refurbished home, located at 1635 South Boulevard, is onthe Good Brick Tour, scheduled May 2 & 3.

Page 40: 0415 houhousehome vir

house&home | 2015 Good Brick Tour | www.preservationhouston.org40

Katharine Mott was one of the first female builders inHouston. Her homes convey both an architectural distinctivenessand timeliness, according to Miller.

Mott homes are recognized for their picturesque manorial styles, asymmetrical floor plans, tapestry brick and casement windows.

The majesty of the house is what originally caught Howe’s eyeduring his morning runs down the boulevard. When it went onthe market, he made a successful bid to buy it.

When he and Blaszak met – and eventually married – she, too, became just as smitten with the house.

“We wanted to honor its history,” says Blaszak Howe.Howe adds that Miller and the MDD team “made sure we

stayed true to the original English Tudor design. We decided theonly way to do it was to do a complete renovation.”

“The original layout was very awkward for tody’s living,” saysMiller. “We had to redistribute the rooms. We relocated thekitchen and dining rooms and better defined the public and pri-vate spaces.

“The entire roof was repaired, and the main entrance, frontdoor, staircase, windows and wood floors all were refurbished,”says Miller.

MDD first researched the home, which back in the day wascalled “The Edgemont,” and found an advertisement announc-ing the home. Inviting all to tour with “no obligation to buy,”the properly worded advertisement also offered an enticingphoto that later helped with the renovation.

Miller and his team discovered, thanks to the newspaperphoto, the gabled dormers and arched windows that were part of

the house at the time, were not original. They were returned totheir original configuration.

They also discovered hard-to-find steel windows from aCalifornia company called Torrance Windows. Their intent was torestore as much of the original Mott detailing as possible, evenwhen it meant doing time-consuming sleuthing for materials.

“We are like detectives, finding the clues on how to restorethe integrity of historic homes,” says Miller.

A kitchen and breakfast addition was completed in the late1980s, but it was isolated from the main house. Additionally, italso had suffered extensive water damage.

The residence had no family room – a need for today’s families – and, inherent to older homes, minimal closets andbathrooms.

A new addition, designed and overseen by MDA, nowincludes a family room and a mudroom on the first floor. Twobedrooms, bathrooms and a laundry room are on the secondlevel. A new two-story garage with quarters also was built.

“A house tells you what it should be at some point, and thenyou’re just along for the ride,” adds Miller.

1. Fire Station No. 62013 Good Brick Award1702 Washington Avenue, Sixth Ward 77007

When Fire Station No. 6 opened in 1903, it was a state-of-the-artfacility, but time and technology passed it by. When Tom Hair pur-chased the late Victorian building, it was listed on the NationalRegister of Historic Places, but floors were missing, there were holesin the roof and the interior was covered in graffiti. Carlin/WhiteAssociates designed the project that transformed the dark, dilapidatedstructure into the bright, comfortable home of Axiom communica-tions group.

From the outset, Hair sought to preserve the historic fabric orreplace missing materials with appropriate salvage. When this was notfeasible, he had 27 mahogany-framed windows built to match theoriginals. A functional brass fire pole was also installed, contributingto the creative atmosphere in the firm’s offices.

During the tour, visitors will see photomurals of the firefightersand equipment assigned to the station in the early 1900s along withHair’s colorful collection of 1920s motivational posters.

Preservation Houston presented Tom Hair with a 2013 GoodBrick Award for his comprehensive restoration of Fire Station No. 6.Photos by Pete Lacker.

2. National Cash Register Building2011 Good Brick Award 515 Caroline Street, Downtown 77002

Deborah Keyser and James Stafford received a 2011 Good BrickAward for their renovation and repurposing of the National CashRegister Building, a designated City of Houston Landmark.

The small building is a hidden gem among larger downtownstructures. Designed by celebrated architect Joseph Finger in theItalian Renaissance Revival style, the finely detailed building wascompleted in 1929, and served as the National Cash RegisterCompany’s sales office and showroom until 1943.

Restoring the building’s original appearance required removinglater signage and recreating an intricate marble mosaic frieze usinghistoric photographs as a guide.

Inside, acoustical tile and fluorescent tubing were taken out, thehigh ceilings were re-opened and period light fixtures were installed. The couple’s offices, complete with antique cash register, occupythe refurbished ground floor.

In what had been a cold, bare storage area on the second story,Cass-Shively Architects designed a warm, inviting apartment thatwelcomes tour visitors who want to sample exemplary downtownliving. The final stop will be the intimate roof garden created byNewberry Campa Architects to provide a quiet urban retreat.Photo above by Jim Parsons. Photos below by Melanie Millar and Michael Morrow.

3. The Casita / 2015 H-E-B Award317 Sampson Street, East End 77003

The rescue and restoration of this quaint cottage is the first step inan ambitious preservation project that involved moving and ultimatelyrestoring six Victorian houses along with repurposing a vintage 1910fire station. In January 2014, Anne Whitlock and Michael Skelly held aliteral “parade of homes” as a half-dozen historic houses made theirway through Houston’s East End.

“The Casita,” the first of the buildings to be rehabilitated, will beopen to visitors. Despite years of neglect, many of the home’s historicdetails were intact. Craftsmen hand-cut intricate Eastlake gingerbreadto match the surviving sample. Inside, Janusz Design opened the mainroom while retaining original trim and beadboard paneling.

“The Casita” will serve as a guesthouse for historic Fire Station No. 2, which the couple is restoring as their home.

In February 2015, Anne Whitlock and Michael Skelly receivedPreservation Houston’s inaugural H-E-B Award for their project, which embodies the spirit of ingenuity and reinvention through his-toric preservation.

4. 1100 Milford Street2010 Good Brick AwardMuseum District 77006

The Museum Area Municipal Association nominated John Gabrielfor his Good Brick Award for preserving a significant neighborhoodlandmark and continuing the legacy of its longtime owner.

This classically detailed house was built in 1919, and VirginiaTomlinson and her husband lived there through most of its history. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Tomlinson maintained her home andyard by herself until she was 99, taking particular pride in the matureoaks that contributed to the neighborhood’s charm.

The house was largely untouched when Mrs. Tomlinson died at 101,and architect John Gabriel purchased the property for his firm’s offices.Neighbors were extremely grateful when Gabriel Architects renovatedthe house, especially since another buyer planned to demolish the his-toric home for a parking lot.

Although he adapted the house for a new use, Gabriel preserved itsresidential character and restored many of the original features that canbe seen today. He also improved the landscaping that was so importantto Mrs. Tomlinson and earned a 2010 Good Brick Award in theprocess.

This gracious Tudor Revival-style home was constructed in 1928,as a speculative house by Katharine Mott, one of Houston’s firstwoman builders. During the tour, visitors will see why Mott’s hous-es have earned a well-deserved reputation for classic comfort andenduring quality.

When Alicia Blaszak Howe and Steve Howe set out to renovateand expand their home, which is listed on the National Register ofHistoric Places, they were committed to preserving the property’sessential character. Original fixtures were refurbished and extensivemold damage repaired.

To make the house more functional, Miller Dahlstrand De JeanArchitects relocated the kitchen and dining room, designed a newfamily room on the first floor and added two bedrooms on the sec-ond story. On the exterior, the new rear addition incorporatesreclaimed tapestry brick to seamlessly blend with the herringbonepattern on the historic house.

Alicia Blaszak Howe and Steve Howe received a 2015 Good BrickAward for their project’s exceptional attention to detail, which main-tains the integrity of Katharine Mott’s original design.

6. L. D. Allen House2003 Good Brick Award2337 Blue Bonnet Boulevard, Old Braeswood 77030

Courtney and Fred Steves received a 2003 Good BrickAward for the sensitive restoration of the most famous mod-ernistic house in Houston. This unique residence was con-structed in 1936, for Mr. & Mrs. L. D. Allen, who wereinspired by the Homes of Tomorrow Exposition at the 1933Chicago World’s Fair.

Houston architects Wirtz & Calhoun incorporated newbuilding technology such as glass block and an innovative steelframing system in their design for the home, which also fea-tured stucco-surfaced walls and tubular metal railings. Theresulting house was showcased in national magazines.

In 2001, when the Steves purchased the property, the housewas largely unchanged, but was neglected and deteriorated.Nevertheless, the couple was enthusiastic about the home’sunique style and commissioned Glassman ShoemakeMaldonado Architects to preserve its authentic character.

During the renovation, original cabinetry was repaired andrefinished, including an unusual moderne bookcase with built-in Zenith radio. Exceptional Art Deco furniture that has beenwith the home through four owners was restored and will beon display during the tour.

From Vision to RealityCREATING A FAMILY HOME WITH FLOW

BY MARSHA CANRIGHT • PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANTHONY RATHBUN

Laura Lopez and Lewis Marks met 15 years ago at a blockparty in the Houston Heights.

They only lived five houses apart but with busy lives, theirpaths had never crossed.

When they did meet, their common interests and similarlifestyles sparked an instant connection.

Marks was born in Houston but raised in Southeast Asia;Lopez is a native New Yorker who had lived in France andAtlanta, Georgia, before settling in Houston. He is an oil

company consultant, and she is in corporate marketing. Theytravel frequently, collect art, and they share an unusual pas-sion: they love to look at real estate and imagine a property’spotential.

“On our first official date, we went to a place called KingBiscuit and after dinner, we toured a few new houses that weredeveloping right in the neighborhood,” Lopez says.

They bought their first house together in 2002. Fast forward to 2015, where you’ll find Laura and Lewis –

A 18-foot retractable wall opens up to the backyard from the kichen area. The owners wanted a balance between indoor and outdoor living.

still in the Heights and now a trio with daughter Leila – put-ting the finishing touches on their dream home, a 1912-eracraftsman bungalow at 2023 Arlington.

This month the house is one of the stars on the HoustonHeights Association Spring Home & Garden Tour, April11&12.

How do you turn a century-old bungalow into a contempo-rary Asian-inspired abode with an open concept and excep-tional flow while preserving the character of the original?

That’s been the happy challenge for Lopez, Marks and 10-year-old Leila, and it’s taken more than two years to complete. They credit architect Daniel Kornberg, who helped translatetheir artful, organic vision to a lush and livable reality.

“We wanted a balance between interior and outdoor livingspace and room to display our art,” Lopez says.

They also wanted to entertain dozens of guests in largecommon areas and still reserve private space for the family’sexclusive use. As good stewards, they chose to be sensitive to

the existing neighborhood and for their house to fit into itwithout overpowering other close-by structures.

“Daniel was able to understand what we wanted and help usbring contemporary elements to the bungalow while honoringits past,” she adds.

“It was a perfect match. He’s lived in the Heights for years;he understands the Heights; we knew instantly that we wantedto work with him.”

Lopez and Marks first saw the bungalow in 2011, whenthey were thinking about buying a new place with a swimmingpool for Leila. Initially they passed on the house.

The floor plan was somewhat disconcerting. The house hadbeen cobbled together with a couple of additions, one estimat-ed to be in the 1930s and another in the 1980s.

“It was choppy and it had no focus,” says Marks .The last renovation added a camelback second story and a

large master suite. The planning and design took about one year and the con-

struction took another 12 months. During that time, they alllived in the garage apartment in order to be close to the actionand guide the process.

“We've been able to accomplish our vision for the housewith few compromises, although we did go over our originalbudget,” Lopez says.

With 3,300 square feet, the house has four separate bed-room suites with bedrooms, baths and spacious closets. One ofthese rooms doubles as a music room with Leila's piano and asa guest room. Another is a media room for the family. Newconstruction created Laura and Lewis' secluded master suite, and Leila has the second story suite with her bedroom, bath, sitting area, and a reading loft at the top of the stairs.

The front part of the house, the original bungalow, opensonto a seating area by the fireplace with a carved Indian table. The mantel was rebuilt around the original fireplace withsquares that mirror the designs on the carved Indian doors onthe opposite wall.

The homeowners chose a pallet of grays and greens toshowcase their art, including favorite pieces by Houston artistsIbsen Espada, Terrell James, and Joe Mancuso. Lopez, who isalso a painter, has some of her acrylics on display.

A defining feature is the pass through, which is lined in pris-tine shiplap that was discovered in the walls of the originalbungalow. The pass-through has a nook, which holds a three-foot Buddha from Vietnam, and a hidden door that opensinto a refrigerated wine room.

Leila and Lewis removed the reclaimed wood together, andLewis planed it.

Walking through the passage, you enter a Great Room withtwo open wings – to the left, a large sitting area centeredaround the basalt table on a teak base and to the right, thekitchen.

This room wraps around the garden and pool area on twosides with a wall of glass, including an 18-foot retracting wallthat literally opens the inside to the exterior living space.

HUSBAND-WIFE TEAM’S HYBRID HOME ISON TOUR APRIL 11 & 12

BY SUSAN FOX • PHOTOS BY PAUL HESTER

What do a couple of design-build professionals – one-time stewardsof a 1905-era Heights home – do to carve out a niche for them-selves in the modern home market?

While their architectural preferences have shifted, the principlesthey value and practice – many of those important to both old andnew styles -- have propelled Tina and Matt Ford forward.

The Fords, owners of Shade House Development, have stakedout a coveted spot in the modern home industry.

Publicity –- including a spread in Dwell, the national magazinedevoted to spotlighting high quality modern design – surroundedthem after they compled a nine-home project in the HoustonHeights a couple years ago.

OrganicModernism

To maximize space, the owners designed an open, multi-use carport. It is shown above with a table and chairs, situated for nice weather enjoyment.

The owners also own the lot next door, filled with fruit trees.

And, this year, The Rice Design Alliance selected the Fords’ ownhome to be part of its annual modern home tour this month.

Both are designers and builders who jointly embrace an apprecia-tion for reclaimed materials, repurposing old items into new uses, liv-ing large within smaller footprints, and keeping quality constructionat the forefront.

Matt Ford has commented that he looks for “the point whensimplicity and luxury meet.”

The key is in the details, he says. It is important that simple doesnot look cheap – in look or build out.

Their former Victorian-era home encompassed more than 3,000square feet; today live comfortably with their daughter in half thatamount of space.

When they sold the old Heights home, they bought a lot andbuilt a 900-square-foot garage, where they lived and worked – untilthe time came to build the house that is on tour.

Tina Ford says the LEED-certified garage apartment and officesoon turned into an experimental lab of sorts for them. First andimportantly, it proved to them that a large house was not necessary.

In their home at 734 Tulane, visitors will notice the front exterioris void of windows. The couple love light and have large windowsthroughout except here where the afternoon sun can be intense.

The main body of the house is stucco mixed with a black pig-

ment hand massaged into a marbleized effect. The wood selected forsome exterior areas in addition to the second-level flooring inside iscypress – a wood once commonly used on homes of yesteryear.

Tina Ford says the interior 9-foot doors, also made of cypress andexhibiting high water marks – were found in New Orleans, postHurricane Katrina.

“We like the warmth of the old,” says Ford, who adds that sheand her husband also like the minimal, clean look modern stylesoffer.

When the couple began drawing the plans to their home, theintent was to utilize each space to its fullest.

They found the pendant lights for the kitchen on Ebay fromsomeone in New York who had brought them in from France butcould not use them himself.

The countertops are petit granite from Belgium. Ford says it isthe same material used on many of the streets in Amsterdam.

The Fords celebrate the outdoors by having many large windowsthat bath the house in warm light. They also bought the lot nextdoor, where they have a garden of fruit trees – apple, grapefruit,Meyer Lemon and lime.

The Ford homestead is one where their own hybrid style – a mix of a little old and rustic, touches of Mid-Century and modernthrive.

A view from the sunroom, accessiblefrom the kitchen through sliding glassdoors, looks out to the yard and opencarport.

The living room is furnished in Mid-century modern. The large-scale art hanging on the wall isby Jack Thompson, a local photographer.

Where Old and New MeetThe residences at 714 and 716 Sabine Street – projects by MurphyMears Architects – create an enclave in Houston's Old Sixth Ward.

A relocated and renovated 1870s Gothic Revival home is locat-ed along the street front, and a modest new modern home residesin back. The homes, organized as communal master planned liv-ing, can be used as separate residences.

The Gothic Revival was purchased at auction and in vast disre-pair. It was carefully renovated to its original appearance, based onan old photo.

The new modern one-story residence is configured around anew tree-lined autocourt and a rear lawn shaded by a 200-year-oldLive Oak.

While the homes were originally conceived 140 years apartfrom one another, they now coexist to create an environment thathonors the scale and the history of this historic neighborhood inthe shadow of downtown.

A curvy garden path features perennials, annuals and whimsical touches.

Before the transformation to paradise.

Helen Gladden with her giantagapanthuses.

Contest WinnerCouple Turns Their Backyard into Paradise BY SUSAN FOX

When LK and Helen Gladden moved to Southeast Houstonalmost two years ago from Big Springs, Texas – where the soiltends to be alkaline and dry – a long-held passion blossomed.

The couple’s yard today is lush, green and full of seasonalcolor, quite the contrast to their former garden.

“Our irises and roses did great (in Big Spring), but othergardening possibilities required lots of work,” says HelenGladden.

“We couldn’t get over how much fun gardening was here. It’s a joy, thanks the to the healthy soil,” she adds.

The Gladdens worked with Mardel Fraivillig at Bay AreaDesign and Landscape to achieve the backyard “paradise”they wanted to enjoy.

Their first step entailed removing a hot tub, redwood deck-ing and long benches running the length of the garage wall.

Fraivillig then sketched out a plan for the approximate 30-foot by 50-foot space.

Her design captured the couple’s dream of having a curvypath of travertine steps connecting two patio areas, and aflowering vine-covered arbor along with a gurgling waterfall.

Gladden says an added pergola outside the kitchen shieldsthem from misting rain, when sitting out underneath – intheir whimsical butterfly-shaped chairs.

Star jasmine now covers a brick wall and in the spring, theGladdens also enjoy the sweet aroma of white espalierblooms.

She had Fraivillig plant such perennials as a red bottlebrushtree, viburnum bushes, agapanthus, daylilies, drift roses,Golden Globes Lysimachia, plumbago and purple astors.

The garden plan also made room for Gladden to plant herown choice of annuals, such as winter’s snapdragons and pan-sies.

And no garden would be complete without a fruit tree, according to Gladden. So, the couple chose a Clementinemandarin for their yard.

Placed here and there in the garden are engraved pavers, concrete bunnies and hedgehogs, along with wind chimes andbirdhouses.

They were so pleased with Fraivillig’s help that they haveasked her to help transform their front yard, too.

HI, I’M CALLIE!I’m a shepherd mix who has been avictim of bad timing! My first familyhad to move and couldn’t take mewith them. I lived with young kidsand another dog and got alongbeautifully with them. Then I wasadopted by someone who just lostanother pet and decided it was toosoon for her. Both families gave megood references, saying I was sweet and wonderful. I’m alsoenergetic, and I love to run and play. I’m house trained, cratetrained and I know “sit,” “stay” and “shake” commands. Iwould love a family and a yard, as I need plenty of exercise. Are you a runner? I’m your gal. I also love to play fetch andto cuddle. The folks at the SPCA tell me I am an all-aroundgreat dog! Find out for yourself.
