A MAJOR FOCUS OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S NATIONAL INNOVATION AND SCIENCE
AGENDA (NISA), WITH A RANGE OF NEW POLICIES AND PROGRAMS ANNOUNCED IN DECEMBER 2015 IN RELATION
TO START UPS IN AUSTRALIA
The key initiatives relevant to startups were:
• Funding support for the establishment or expansion of startup
incubators and accelerators
• The introduction of a new Entrepreneur Visa to enable founders
of promising overseas startups to relocate to Australia
• Tax incentives for individual investors to encourage more angel
investment in startups
• The establishment of startup landing pads in five overseas
locations
• Changes to the tax treatment of Venture Capital Limited
Partnerships to encourage the formation of more VC funds that
will invest in startups
• Regulatory changes to enable crowd-sourced equity funding
• Improved insolvency laws to encourage entrepreneurial behavior

• There are 1,200 tech startups in Australia, or 0.06% of all Australian
businesses.
• Australia has four startup ecosystems – Sydney being the biggest,
55% larger than Melbourne, six times bigger than Brisbane and
nearly eight times the size of the Perth ecosystem.
• 48% of Australian startups were in NSW, followed by 18% in
Queensland and 13% in Victoria.
• 11 leading Australian co-working spaces
• 22 Australian accelerators or incubators
• A call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from incubators, accelerators
and other service partners to form part of the Sydney Startup Hub E:

• Austrade Seoul has started promoting the Korea Start up ecosystem to Australia start ups, accelerator and incubators.
• Austrade is Seoul looking into developing further partnership opportunities with Korea Incubators, Accelerator, Innovation
centres.
• Haymarket HQ in Sydney Australia recently conducted a VC with support of G3 Partners, (CEO Nathan Millard) and
Austrade Seoul.
• Austrade planning to conduct a Australia Start up meet up in Korea with Australian start ups, accelerators, ventures and
incubators. Open for Korea partners to work with us in conducting this event and partner with Australian key players in
the start up ecosystem.
• The NSW state government has a call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from incubators, accelerators and other service
partners to form part of the Sydney Startup Hub E: [email protected]. NSW and Austrade support you regarding
questions and applications.
