installation and maintenance, but does not provide
detailed information. A Work Plan must be designed
before any fencing installation or maintenance work
is begun.

Fencework
Upon completion of this course, workers will be able to:
• Clearly identify the risks and hazards associated with each
step in fence installation and maintenance work.
• Install and maintain fences on the site in a safe manner.
• Recognize the preventive measures available for fence
installation and maintenance.
Evaluation: You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire at the end
of the course and hand it in to the instructor.

Safety perimeters must be erected on a site to protect workers.
These may be temporary fences (used during building
construction) or permanent fences to delimit the site boundary.

• Any barrier around a piece of land that
shows its limits or prevents entering or
leaving.
On the Guelb site, there are fences:
• Around electrical installations;
• Around excavations and holes;

• Etc.

Fencework
Temporary fences:
• Are used for short periods of time;
• Must be firmly anchored to the ground and installed in
accordance with the Work Plan;
• Must not be used to support workers;
• Are also called guard rails.
Temporary and permanent fences
12
Caution: Fences of this type are weaker than
permanent ones and not as firmly attached.
![Page 13: 1) Guelb-Fencework-V1.pps](https://reader030.vdocuments.pub/reader030/viewer/2022032613/577cc3681a28aba71195f46f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Fencework
Permanent fences:
• Are used over long periods of time;
• Must be strong and stable;
• Have support posts embedded in concrete;
• May use gravel to stabilise the posts.
Caution: Fences of this type require strict
maintenance.

Fencework
Some general rules apply to fence
construction.
• Materials must be transported
using inspected lifting equipment.
Certified riggers are required.
• Materials must be stored in a stable
manner.
Step-by-step

Fencework
To install support posts:
• Follow the Work Plan installation
procedure;
• Concreting training may be
required;
• Posts must be stable. Never
leave an unstable post in place.

Fencework
When installing support posts:
• Posts must be sunk into the
ground to a depth equal to at
least one-third of their length,
and no less than 50 cm.

Fencework
When excavating for fencing installations:
• The Excavation course is required;
• Always keep more than two metres away from holes;
• Follow the Work Plan.

Tools must be used with care:
• The Tools course is required;
• Use tools that are in good condition;
• Place damaged tools in the bin provided.

Fencework
When the work is finished, workers must ensure that:
• The area remains marked off as long as the work
requires;
• All debris must be removed from the work site.

Courses and certifications may be
required for some fencework:
• Cutting or grinding of metal parts
requires Hot Work training;
• Working at heights requires training;
• Using tools requires specific training.

Fencework
Fences must be maintained regularly to
prevent breakage. Fences in good
condition play a major safety role.
• Work site inspection patrols must
inspect fences.
• All workers must report any breaks or
signs of premature wear on fences or
fence foundations to their supervisor.
