1 Rewrite the sentences into reported speech, using the following

specifying verbs: accuse, admit, advise, agree, apologise, beg,

complain, deny, exclaim, inform.

1 "I didn't do it, I tell you! I didn't kill him!" he said.

He denied killing him / having killed him / that he had killed him.

2 "Well, in a situation like this, it's better to tell the truth," he said.

He advised me to tell the truth.

3 "I'm terribly sorry I said that," he said.

He apologised for having said that. / for what he said.

4 "Waiter! There's a fly in my soup," the customer said.

The customer complained that there was a fly in his/her soup.

5 "What a horrible dress you're wearing, dear!" she said.

She exclaimed that she was wearing a horrible dress.

6 "I'm afraid I did it. I took it. It's my fault," said the boy.

The boy admitted taking it / having taken it / that he had taken it.

7 "The next train leaves at 5," said the stationmaster.

The stationmaster informed us that the following train left at 5.

8 "Please Mum, please can I stay up late?" said the child.

The child begged his/her mother to let him/her stay up late.

9 "You did this. You stole that money!" the police officer said.

The police officer accused Burkin of stealing the money.

10 "I had exactly the same impression as you did," I said.

I agreed with him/ her that we both had the same impression.

He offered to lift it for his mother.

She reminded me to post the letter / reminded me of the letter.
