From the winner I am very thankful that I was able to participate in this art fair and that I won the TERADA PRIZE. I am really surprised

but happy about winning this prize. Right now I am fully experiencing Mr. Terada’s words; that one can never know

where the chances are. Thank you very much. Furthermore, after receiving the prize galleries invited me to do a solo

exhibition and my works were sold. After passing the first exam at the Berlin Art University, I am currently preparing

the second exam. That everything connected to this new activity is also thanks to the opportunity of winning the prize. I sincerely thank you. Kai Oshima,December 2016

From a judge

With sculptures like "my daily things" or "my favourite things" Kai Oshima created works which reflect her art-desire

very precisely. Kai Oshima succeeded in her goal to depict her living conditions and daily life in a simple and conscious

way. She denominates her own reality and personality with few objects which she puts together to simple forms like a cube on a rectangular space. Dr.Peter Funken, 20th September 2016

From the winner

As I was told that I won the prize, I felt happiness, surprise and a strong desire to create. After graduating Art university, it is my forth year to seriously work as an artist. Even though I started to draw at the age of four, when I was in Art

University I put space between art and me. The travels I did, the people I met and the experience I made in that time are

now helping me to create my works. Sometimes, when I look at the many art university students and young artists

aiming to be a professional, who are all giving up, it gets hard to keep my motivation and I start to think about giving

up myself. But now I realize that it was a good decision that I didn’t give up and continued. I want to make full use of the chance I got this time and work even harder. Thank you very much. Aira, September 2016

From a judge

The theme of Aira’s picture series is “falling” (Raku). She wants to depict a process seen in nature, which she sees when

rain or water is falling or when blossoms are falling down. “Falling” does not mean death but “life” says the artist –

thereby I feel the beauty and strength in “life”. Aira’s source of artistic inspiration lies in the nature, which is an all-embracing principle of living. Dr.Peter Funken, 20th September 2016

From the judge

When I saw Marek Slavik’s works at the exhibition space of the Berliner Liste, I was interested in knowing if he is a

young or already experienced artist because his works were very structured. At that time, I left the booth with this

impression. The next day, when I came to see his works for the second time, a young man with a beard was there so I

asked him if these are his works. He said yes and I replied that his works are pretty good. I am impressed by his works

because his basics are so firmly established. A lot of young artists today do not have this base. When one looks at that kind of pictures, it feels like a seemingly strong cliff is crumbling. When one asks what the base of art today is, it gets

difficult, because it is so divergent. If it is fine art, the skill in portraying people or objects is the base, but one cannot

sum up the basics of contemporary art. For example the base of Stella’s works lies in the balance of the geometrical

figures. Like this, every base of a contemporary artist is different a bit. 70 years have passed since people started to say

contemporary art but it is important for contemporary art and every art that the artist knows the importance of the basics and if he has fused with them. We need to look at that point to establish a connection with contemporary art.

The basics of Marek Slavik are very firm. One can look forward to his future. Rin Terada 05.10.2016
