Summary

3

Introduction

Longitudinal designs permit the exploration of time-dependent phenomenon.

learning , adaptation ,and evolution within the research setting.

This paper has attempted to raise issues about current IS research for the purposes of discussion and to suggest longitudinal designs as one potential solution.

4

Longitudinal Design

Trend particular people change in particular time.

Generation

Little sample

This paper calls for a greater use of longitudinal design in IS research.

5

2 level discusses

First level: discusses the mismatch between the traditional research designs employed in IS and the characteristics of IS research settings.

Second level: reviews the problems in IS research from the perspective of the philosophy of social.

6

Research in IS

Many of current problems in IS research can be traced to two root causes:

A mismatch between the research methodologies and the features of IS research settings.

The use of a limited and seriously criticized research philosophy that is highly depend upon positivist research principle.

7

Four major theme during the last 20 years

Research to improve the effectiveness of IS in practice.

Research to study the problem associated with IS failures or implementation efforts.

8

Four major theme during the last 20 years(cont.)

Research to study the impact and issue associated with the introduction and use of computerized IS on organizations.

Research on the role and effects of computer system upon society, its social structures ,divisions of labors ,class restructure ,and innovation.

9

Four unresolved issues in queries

Inability to ascertain the impacts of IS and IT on organization structure or patterns of behavior.

An inability to make statement about the long-term effect of IS on dependent measure.

10

Four unresolved issues in queries(cont.)

An inability to make statements of IS on the quality of work life.

An inability to accurately reconstruct or observe the antecedent conditions of IS failure and success.

11

Discuss in later

More detail the limitations of the methodologies employed in IS research.

Placing IS research in the context of contemporary social science criticism of the logical positivist research philosophy.

12

Discuss in later (cont.)

Examines the longitudinal design as a vehicle for overcoming some of the limitations in IS.

Conclude the paper offering suggestions for conducting longitudinal research in IS setting.

13

The misapplication of research methods

A tool or method has in some way been applied to a situation in a inappropriate or less than satisfactory manner.

14

Two level misapplication

1st:the IS field has been quite narrow in its use of research methods utilizing some studies.

2nd: misapplication is seem in the broad logic of the research designs in terms of their match with the characteristics of the research settings.

15

Research methods in use

Van Horn (1973) found that IS Research has the following characteristics:

A paucity of empirical research.

Limited theories.

A reliance on field and case study methods.

A general inability of the case method to provide.

16

The paucity of general research methods

Case studies: be limited by their dependence upon retrospective accounts ,selective perception of the observer ,and limited sample size.

Conceptual studies: at this point are best viewed as proto-scientific since the body of empirical research is limited.

Field tests & field studies: based upon single sampling points and lack cross-sectional structure.

17

The structure of IS setting

IS research is unique because it focuses upon the development, use ,management and evaluation of computing as an activity in and of itself.

In order to conduct research about computing, the researcher must take great care to carefully characterize the research setting and use appropriate methodology.

18

The society of IS

Computing systems are part of the social system, IS research settings are often in flux.

The relationship between computer technology and social change is fundamental to most research issue confronting the IS researcher today.

19

4 features in IS structure

IT will reinforce the existing behavior…etc.

IS research settings are characterized by different rates of change.

ISs themselves become a type of social organization.

Without grasping the above features of IS setting are unlikely to yield fruitful results.

20

Limitation in current research philosophy

A limited research philosophy is most likely to lead to a limited set of research method and away from a concept of methodological pluralism.

21

The basic tenets of positivist scientific philosophy

Research can obtain objective, value-free facts about social reality which are independent of the research. The hypothetical deductive method provides for a

unified approach to scientific inquiry. The search for causal relationships is the

preeminent concern of science.Empiricism & measurement are essential for

scientific discovery.

22

Tenets of the Post-Positivist Research Philosophy

The instability of social systems and human behavior.

The limits of the stimulus-response paradigm.

Problems with transhistorical generalization.

Problems with the concept of observer neutrality.

The limits of research method.

23

The instability of social systems and human behavior

The instability premise distinguishes social systems from the structure and patterned characteristics of natural system.

Any stability found in a social setting is based upon a combination of social inertia and social contracts.

24

The limits of the stimulus-response paradigm

The social scientist faces an instability in their real social laboratories that are not part of stimulus response laboratories or of the controlled laboratories in which natural scientists.

25

Problems with Transhistorical generalizations

Transhistorical is an entity or concept.

The problems in making transhistorical claims for validity due to the intersubjectivity of the observer and the cultural bias latent in any truth claim.

26

Problems with the concept of observer neutrality

The post-positivists maintain that any human observer will always be subject to bias as a result of previous experience ,limitations in knowledge , value beliefs and attitudes.

From this perspective “facts are not facts” but really as series of perspectives on reality according to a particular observer.

27

The limits of research method

Single studies offer little hope in overcoming these limitations.

Longitudinal designs offer the most promising option deal with the limits of method.

28

Implications for IS research

1st:Argues for a plurality of research approaches and methodologies.

2nd:Since social action is action ,change and movement underlies much of “that which is studied”.

3rd:Rely heavily upon a rationalist and structural functionalist.

29

Implications for IS research(cont.)

4th:Encourages IS researchers to include additional documentation about the context of the phenomena studied.

5th:The limitations of the methodology employed and offer other alternative explanations for the results of the study from their first hand perspective.

30

Longitudinal research designs

IS research designs must include notions about the rates of change in IS ,and the capability of those systems to change in response to contextual variables.

A Longitudinal research designs is a design in which behavior is measured at a number of points in time during a finite period of time.

31

Longitudinal designs vary according to

The number of measurement points or waves of data collection.

The overall period of the study.

The method of data collection and measurement.

The sample design and stratification of sample.

Units of analysis.

The amount of redundancy and flexibility imbedded in the design.

32

The problem in using longitudinal design

Cost: expensive & need long term funding.Effort: require a great deal of extended effort.Obsolescence: too old information of in long term.Participation & attrition: need a lot of effort and cooperation, and it’ll lead to attrition sample size.

33

The problem in using longitudinal design (cont.)

Publication of results: the publication of research results must many times wait.

The bias and influence introduced by repeated measures.

Longitudinal designs require sophisticated analysis.

34

Developing longitudinal for IS research

It is believed that properly formulated longitudinal designs address some of the issues raised by the critical theorists and the post-positivists.

35

Five guidelines

Use longitudinal designs : longitudinal designs are particularly appropriate in the study of instability and change.

Describe the computing environment : augment longitudinal designs with case studies and unobtrusive measures that focus on contextual factors , history, values, belief.

36

Five guidelines (cont.)

Collect quantitative data : collect perceptual measure on values. Include open-ended questions : include open-ended questions should be included in longitudinal design and anecdotal data should be reported in the result.Focus on process issues : the research design should be formulated.

37

Four steps to setup IS research-1st

A longitudinal designs that include open-ended questions

measures to assess attitudes

values permits the researcher to observe

analyze the way

in which values change over time and examine the type of learning that occurs within the setting.

38

Four steps to setup IS research-2nd

A longitudinal designs implicitly consider the instability of social systems.

A longitudinal designs can be used to track the changes in selected variable over time.

39

Four steps to setup IS research-3rd

A longitudinal designs can assist in understanding causality.

A longitudinal designs permits the research to observe the appearance of event over time.

40

Four steps to setup IS research-4th

A longitudinal designs is one of the only one of research methods available.

Antecedent conditions and learning are frequently very important factors in the way a particular individual will behave.

41

Summary

The value of longitudinal designs in IS research has been overlooked by IS researcher.

42

Summary (cont.)

Longitudinal designs provide the opportunity for the IS researcher to explore cause-effect linkages , process patterns , accommodation processes, and the co-evolution of computing systems and social settings.
