I. Background

1. the Mayo Clinic

Named in 1903, the world-famous Mayo Clinic originated as part of St. Mary’s Hospital. Today, it is a private association of over 900 physicians and surgeons.

As much as 25% of the American populations is estimated to suffer from mild or moderate depressions, anxiety, and other types of emotional problems.

关于 “ depression” ( 抑郁症 )

1982 年在全国 12 个地区开展了流行病学调查，结果情感障碍的总患病率为 0.76% 。；而在 15~59 岁人口中，抑郁性神经症患病率为 3.11% ，多起病于青少年期，成年患者女性多于男性。 抑郁症的发病率很高，但现在对它的发病原因仍不十分清楚，可能与社会心理因素、遗传、人体的生化变化及神经内分泌等有关。其中，遗传因素很重要，研究表明：家族中有患病者的人群发病率是一般人群的 10 － 30 倍
