As I write this, the 113th Congress has scattered to the four winds work-ing on their re-elections. They have very little to show for themselves. The Congress has succeeded in making the largest mess legislatively in history!

President Harry Truman would be spinning over this Congress as op-posed to the 80th “Do Nothing” Con-gress that he had to deal with. The 113th has that prize now.

By comparison, the 80th Congress looks prolific as compared to the 113th. In that Congress, 395 laws were enact-ed the first year and 511 the second. With the 113th, it has enacted only 163 laws during the first 620 days of the two year session. This is 173 laws less than the 112th Congress and 237 less than the 111th Congress during the same period of time. Only about 108 of the laws passed by the end of July were of any substance, that is, not commemorations, naming of Federal buildings or ceremonial.

The Congress has abdicated its con-stitutional responsibility of formulat-ing and passing a long term budget for the Federal Government. All we seemingly can deal with are short term Continuing Resolutions that have the effect of not allowing any agency of the government to do any long range planning.

We see the adverse effects this has on legislation that has to do with our military and its members as well as our retirees. Important planning for sys-tem support of the active military, per-sonnel planning, health care, retire-ment issues, etc. are on hold.

Senate Bill 2410, Carl Levin Na-tional Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015, is languishing in the Senate awaiting action which will not come until after the November elec-

tions and perhaps not until the new Congress in January 2015. We need to visit with Senator Cruz’s office while the Senate is in recess to encourage him to do what he can after the elec-tions to get this bill passed and empha-size the importance of developing a long term budget that the Congress can pass. Senator Cruz is on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

It is our responsibility as officers, MOAA members and citizens to make sure that all of our Senators and Repre-sentatives understand that the poisoned political atmosphere that has been the trademark of the 113th Congress has got to stop! This is a country with the finest military in the world that needs to get some certainty that the Congress has not provided. We need better than this. Visit with them while they are on the campaign trail or in their offices to express these things and most im-portantly Vote in November.

The Alamo Chapter had another successful golf tournament in Septem-ber to benefit the Warrior and Family Support Center and the Alamo MOAA JROTC Scholarships. The event, held on September 12 went without a hitch and over $12,000 for our charities. 70% will be going to the Warrior & Family Support Center and it will be presented to them during our Novem-ber luncheon on November 20 at the Ft Sam Golf Club. I want to thank the tremendous efforts of some of our members Frank Rohrbough, Stephen Rohrbough and David Walker. With-out their dedicated work this whole program would not have come off. I also want to thank our Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Trish Meserve as she provided the glue that kept us all straight with teams, money donations, etc. She has done an exemplary job.

October is upon us and with it Ok-toberfest. For our meeting in October, we will be having an Oktoberfest event the evening of October 30 at the Ft. Sam Houston Golf Club.

Helpful Hints At our last meeting as an ice breaker we each told a little vignette about our-selves or someone else. It was great fun and we learned a little more about one another. This led to a helpful hints discussion. The following is a compilation of varied helpful hints to living submitted by different individu-als.

Burns: Whether from a stove, sun, coffee or hot dish, Aloe Vera gel is the quickest and most effective treatment. Just break off a leaf and rub it on the burn. It may take a couple of applica-tions depending upon severity of the burn. No blisters and no scars. Keep a plant on your window sill. Relief is almost instantaneous.

Fever blisters: When you fir st feel that tingle on your lip, apply Capzasin. It may need several applica-tions, and it may burn for about 10 minutes, but you will not have a blister or swollen lip. Or pierce a Vitamin E capsule and apply to the lip. Not as fast or effective, but it works.

Cooking bacon: Rinse bacon under cold water, dry with paper towels, be-fore cooking. Cook in oven at 365 degrees for 10 minutes for maximum flavor.

Cherries: Contain an anti-oxidant that protects the body from cancer cells.

Honey: The most effective cough syrup that exists.

Dryer Sheets: Stinking laundry hamper? Place a sheet of Bounce Fab-ric softener in the bottom of the ham-per. Putting away suitcases, storage boxes, winter blankets--place a sheet of bounce in container. Keeps away moths and mildew.

WD 40: Have a tangled necklace chain? Spray with WD 40 and then use a pin to untangle. Have a lock that

sticks? Spray with WD 40. Sticky sliding door? Spray tracks with WD 40. Fire ants? Spray with WD 40 and they stay away.

Arthritis pain? A tablespoon of cider vinegar in the morning can help ease arthritis pain.

Sugar ants in the kitchen cabinet: Mix boric acid with a drop of orange oil and spray area.

Duct tape: Traveling and develop a corn or callous on your foot? Put some duct tape over the area. Eases the discomfort. Duct tape can be used to mend damaged luggage when trav-eling. Hem come loose on skirt or slacks? Use duct tape to hold it in place till you get home.

Cooking pasta: To keep pasta from boiling over, place a wooden spoon across the pot. Never boils over.

Plumbing: To keep air conditioner from getting clogged and running over, once a month put a cup of vine-gar down the little spout next to the conditioner. Little top comes off easi-ly. Saves a plumbing bill. Sluggish sink drains? Every four to six weeks put one cup of baking soda followed by a cup on vinegar down the drain. Follow this with a pot of boiling water, then run water through the sink. No more gunky black mold. Garbage disposal? Once a month-or as needed run a pan of ice cubes through the sys-tem. Keeps blades sharp and system clean.

Cooking hamburger: Add one table-spoon of water to the one pound of meat. Bake in oven. Less splatter and softer hamburgers.

Auto safety: If you have an old cell phone, keep it charged and placed in your glove compartment. All phones can call 911 for free regardless of net-work.

Cancer Related Symptoms Today it seems more people are com-bating some form of cancer. Not only do they battle signs and symptoms of the disease but also of the treatment itself. Fatigue is the most common side effect and although there is no cure for fatigue, you can help mini-mize it by: * Plan activities for when you have the most energy. * Pace yourself. Take naps as needed. * Try relaxation techniques. * Reduce stress where you can. * Are your medications causing your fatigue? Check with your doctor. * Eat three to four small meals per day. Limit high fat, high sugar and alcohol. The following are things that you can do when you have an infection: * Get plenty of rest, eat a well bal-anced diet. * Avoid contact with people who are sick. * Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. * Use gloves when cleaning or garden-ing. * Avoid raw meat, shellfish and eggs. * Thoroughly wash raw fruits and veg-etables--may need to avoid them com-pletely * Use pain medication as needed. Alternative treatments: * Mind Body techniques, hypnosis, biofeedback, Yoga, tai chi, music. * Massage therapy: * Acupuncture, reiki, and therapeutic touch. * Dietary supplements Check with your doctor to avoid drug interaction. Mission Statement Vision: To be the primary advocate for the military community Mission: To be a major source of information,

support and social engagement for the membership;

To provide programs and services for the common good of our military community;

To be a powerful voice supporting MOAA at the local, state and nation-al levels.

To help us fulfill our mission come join us at our monthly leadership meetings

- the 1st Thursday each month at 10am, at the Chapter Offices.

Call (210) 228-9955 for more info.

Congress, the enhancement of the chapters and their roles. Colonel Da-vid Patrick, our regional transition of-ficer, will also be attending.

I want to also address something of some importance to our Chapter. The Alamo Chapter has been fortunate

over the past few years to have had leaders who have brought it from the doldrums of being a small, not so in-volved Chapter to one that has grown to over 1600 members. It has become involved in ever increasing activities at the local, State and Federal levels, in particular, as it has to do with advoca-cy, helping transitioning military members, enhancing involvement of the local San Antonio/Bexar County community and its interaction with JBSA, support of the JROTC, etc. Alamo MOAA has been making itself heard.

President’s Message (Continued from Pg 5)

Our November Meeting, at the Ft. Sam Golf Club will be our business meeting and my report as to the State of the Chapter.

As to our speaker, I am working on it and hope to announce it soon.

I will be traveling, at the end of Oc-tober, to the MOAA Annual Meeting in Arlington, VA. Alamo MOAA will again be receiving a Five Star Chapter Levels of Excellence award. There will be much discussion relative to MOAA’s legislative goals, the new

Chapter Golf Tournament benefits Warrior & Family Support Center

Judith Markelz, the Director for the Warrior and Family Support Center advised they will be using our dona-tion from this Golf Tournament to help defray the cost of therapeutic

horseback riding. Originally they were supporting this

program for the amputees but have discovered that it is also very benefi-

cial for TBI and PTSD patients.

If you go out to your car at night in a parking lot, get in and notice a piece of paper on your back window, do not get out to investigate. You have left your keys in the engine, (ladies left their purses on the seat) and while you go to the back, the thief jumps in and drives off with your car.

The next meeting of Solitaires will be Tuesday 7 October at Fort Sam Golf Club and Sunday, 26 October at Ran-dolph Parr Club.

Col Irene Collier (Ret)

If you are a single man or lady and like to eat, chat, make new friends, experience or provide sometimes brief impromptu or scheduled interesting demonstrations, talks, or discussions, whether you are: visiting the area; active duty or retired; widowed or di-vorced; the SOLITAIRES is the group for you.

This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy camaraderie with other single men and ladies whose backgrounds and experiences are with the military. So make that resolution to get out and about and come have some fun!! Call the office (210) 228-9955 for more details.

President’s Message (Continued from Page 8)

It is my fervent desire that Alamo MOAA will continue along the path that it has been going, but we have a basic problem. We need “new” blood! Some of our present leaders, including myself, are getting a bit “long in the tooth” and we need to get new leaders from our membership involved to whom we can eventually pass the reins of power and who have the passion to keep Alamo MOAA involved and serving our military community.

We need our Active Duty members in some positions as well as our “younger” retired members. If you have the faintest interest in doing something like this to fill some of those leader ship positions, please con-tact either myself or leave a message with our office that you are interested and want to talk.

Have a great month! Remember to Vote!
