Project
background
Objectives
• Restoration of ecosystem and promotion of biodiversity
- Buffer zone during floods
- Ecological wetland for promoting biodiversity during normal times
Background Gyeongpo Prickly water lily wetland
• To secure biodiversity by restoring deteriorated hydro-ecology of
Gyeongpo lake
- Form a consensus on the need for restoration of Gyeongpo lake and
its lagoon eco-system
- Frequent environmental pollution by water cycle interruption
Location : East coast of Gangwon
Area : 273,515㎡
Budget : $18.2billion
Period : 2007 ∼ 2012 (December)
Contents
- Multifunctional wetland
- Eco trail
- Wildlife habitat
Project Overview Gyeongpo Prickly water lily wetland
Direction of restoration
• Return to the 1960s
- Organizing governance council composed of experts, NGOs, local residents
and government officials to create a roadmap for restoration
• Selecting of flagship species : Otter, Prickly water lily
Spatial composition
• UNESCO MAB concept : Core, Buffer and Transition area
- Core area : natural habitats free from human interference to promote biodiversity
- Buffer area : waterfront for eco-education programs in the wetland
- Transition area : eco-trail for ecotourism

Goal and Composition Gyeongpo Prickly water lily wetland
Current status Germination of ‘Prickly water lily’ -the seeds have
been buried since reclamation of the lake –demonstrates
the importance of habitat environment in ecosystem
restoration.
