REVOLUO DIGITAL DIGITAL REVOLUTION
Devido principalmente s tecnologias
potencial comercial.
profundamente o mercado (RAPP e COLLINS,1988).
Largely due to digital technologies, the
market has changed drastically over the last fewyears, bringing profound changes in therelationship between offer and demand invarious sectors of the economy, includingtourism and consequently, hotel management.
The current effects of technology are quitedifferent from those of the industrial revolution. They are more democratic, personal, subtle and
profound, and they are al tering basicperceptions, va lue judgments, re lations andmarkets (MCKENNA, 1998).
Like every major and true technological
revolution that preceded it, the Internet hascome to stay, just like the development ofelectricity, the railways and the telephone at theend of the 19th century. At the end of the 20thcentury, the potential of the Internet was stillincalculable and its commercial potential was asubject of speculation.
The transition from the old business worldto the new digital world was a unique andsingular event, which brought profoundchanges in the market (RAPP and COLLINS,1988). As in various other economic transitionsthat have taken place, this transition to the
digital world is a period in which companies have

A distncia entrehspede e hotel encurtou e a velocidade do fluxo deinformao aumentou.
Os mercados no so recursos infinitos a
serem explorados.
GROVE observa quecomo acontece emmuitas modalidades esportivas, o timing tudo.
ample opportunities for increased growth.During the 1980s, the main issue was quality
and in the 1990s, it was reengineering. In the firstdecade of this century it will be speed: how quicklywill the nature of business change? How fast willcommercial transactions become and how will theinformation be accessed. This will result in changesin consumers lifestyles and expectations ofcompanies (GATES, 1999).
Through the new digital technologies, thisspeed is increasing rapidly, transforming both thedemand for and the offer of hotel products.
Currently, at the beginning of the Internetera, new businesses are being created 60 times morequickly than in the 1950s (NAISBITT, 1982).DONOJAN warns:Prepare for what will happen inthe future, because the great change is that thefuture is arriving more quickly (DONOJAN, 1997;
100).The new world requires taking a different view
of the pre-defined standards. Hotels need to createnew standards and not just follow the existing ones. This involves a higher risk, but the rewards couldalso be much greater. In the new world of theInternet, especially the Web, new communicationchannels are being opened up which are moreefficient and more sophisticated. The gap betweenthe guest and the hotel has narrowed and the speedof the flow of information has increased.
Markets are not unlimited resources to be
exploited. They grow, change and develop as aresult of new products and services.Nowadays, more things are appearing from
one day to the next than in the past. The mainreason for this is the speed with whichtechnological innovations are appearing. This
process formerly took twenty years; today, changesare occurring every five years (MCKENNA, 1999).
According to estimates of the IDC, 99% of allthe technological innovations throughout thehistory of humanity have occurred over the lasttwenty years (GROVE, 1997). Each year, moreinnovations appear than the year before, and each
new innovation has a greater potential to beexplored than the ones that preceded it.
The innovations in communications andcomputer technologies will accelerate this pace ofchange, shrinking the time it takes to transmitinformation (NAISBITT, 1982). For this reason, adapting quickly to the pace of change will befundamental for the survival of hotels in such acompetitive market.
GROVE observes that as happens in manytypes of sport, timing is everything. A single
business decision taken early could be successful;
but taken later could be inadequate and fail(GROVE, 1997; 120). The solution, therefore, is to

remain alert to changes in the market, anticipatingtheir impact and responding to them in the best way
possible.Hotels need to adapt to the constant changes.
There is no point struggling bravely against them, since the force of change in the market will always
win in the end. Constant innovation of productsand services are fundamental characteristics forhotels in this new millennium.
The transformations that are taking place inthe market mean that the former skills and resourceshave become less important. This is why peoplealmost instinctively cling to the past, refusing toaccept change (GROVE, 1997).
In a way, the disastrous results tell us thatsomething is very wrong, but it is essential to beable to spot the signs before they becomestronger (NAISBITT, 1982). Hotels should, therefore, be constantly attentive to smallchanges in the market, in order to adapt to themas quickly as possible.
TURISMO E TECNOLOGIA TOURISM AND TECHNOLOGY
Tourism in recent years has become one of theprincipal sectors of the Brazilian economy and, dueto its multiplying effect, its is becoming a lucrative
business for many companies in a wide variety ofsectors.
Since the days of Thomas Cook, tourism hasbeen big business. At the beginning of the 1950s,
the concept of marketing was included in theprocess of tourism commercialization, following theentry of a number of companies into the tourismindustry which did not belong to the sector, butwhich had vast experience in other business sectorsand extensive knowledge of the new marketingtechniques (ACERENZA, 1990).
It should be emphasized that there aredifferences between marketing tourism andmarketing physical products, despite the fact that
both are based on the same principles. The differences are a result of the nature of the
services offered, the characteristics of tourismproducts and the level of uncertainty surroundingdecision-making in the commercialization of tourism(ACERENZA, 1990).
Innovating and continually improving thequality of the offer should be strategies used intourism marketing. Due to globalization and thegrowing diversity of the offer of tourism productsand services, the sector has become highlycompetitive. BENI observes that there are nolonger competitive tourism countries, but onlycompetitive tourism products (BENI, 1998; 150).
It is clear then, that to become competitive in
the market it is necessary for both the tourismdestination and the hotel to create products and

services with added value. To achieve success, hotel entrepreneurs need
to develop new and better strategies that can createcompetitive advantage, since in the digital worldthe competition is fierce.
DRUCKER observes that
in the geography of the digital market, distance is simply eliminated. There is onlyone economy and one market A result of thisis that each company needs to beinternationally competitive, even if itmanufactures or sells to only one local orregional market (DRUCKER, 2000, 92).
In order to ensure a strong position in themarket, hotels need to differentiate their productsand services from all the others that exist in the hotel
market, thereby creating a competitive advantage.Formerly, this competitive advantage was
based on structural features such as market power, economies of scale or having a wide range of
products. Nowadays, it is based on the capacity ofbusinesses to offer added value to their clients, through better performance, workflow managementand the customization of products and services(ALBERTIN, 1999).
The hotels performance depends on thecompetitive advantages it has gained. Addingvalue to the traditional services will become a
fundamental means of survival in the market..Competitive advantage is manifested throughhaving lower costs than the competition or throughthe ability to differentiate and achieve a pricesupplement which exceeds the additional cost ofthe differentiation. Some competitive advantagesarise from differences in operational efficiency, butthe more lasting ones arise from the occupation of asingle competitive position (PORTER, 1999).
Operational efficiency means carrying outactivities better than the competitors. It includesefficiency, but is not limited to this aspect alone. Itrefers to any practices by which the hotel makes
better use of its resources. It is important to stressthat each hotel should develop its operationalefficiency in a way that is distinct from itscompetitors, in an attempt to create competitiveadvantage.
Competitive position is based on intangiblefactors, such as leadership in technology, quality, reliability and service (PORTER, 1999). Hotelswould fare much better if they managed to placethemselves in a competitive position within themarket.
Unlike prices and technical details, the
intangible aspects do not fit neatly into a table ofcomparison between products. There is no

appropriate way to measure them or describe themnumerically. (MCKENNA, 1999). However, theseaspects are becoming increasingly important forcreating competitive advantage. ALBERTINstresses that
The digital market could providecompetitive advantages such as: promoting
products at lower cost with cheaperdistribution channels and direct savings;helping the company to differentiate itself notonly in terms of price, but also through
product innovation; commercialization timeand service to the client and enabling client-focused strategies through improved clientrelationships. (ALBERTIN, 1999; 79).
In todays digital market, the Web provides an
ideal opportunity for hotels since using thesestrategies, it is possible to create variouscompetitive advantages.
Telecommunications, multimedia and inparticular, the Web, are causing profound changesin the tourism sector, offering new opportunities forsmall and large hotels alike. VALLS affirms that
Todays technology alters the existingrelationship between tourism products andservices, and clients. The information thatflows through new communication channels
is objective, instantaneous and complete, enabling the tourist to avoid the cumbersomeand slow process of searching for andselecting information from various sources(VALLS, 1996; 111).
It is essential for hotels to adapt to the newtechnologies, particularly the Web, as the structureof tourism is becoming increasingly complex, theconsumer market has become fragmented and theoffer of products and services is proliferating.
ZOREDA, Executive Director of the WTO,states that
For those outside the tourism industry, there are enormous opportunities to beexplored. The barriers are disappearing andthe financial returns are easier than ever
before. However, for those within the sector, there is an urgent need to review their
business focuses and develop a plan since inthe future, electronic commerce will be the
preferred means of purchasing tourismtravel (Official Site of the World TourismOrganization, 2000).

bilhes, contra US$ 5 bilhes movimentados em 1999(Site oficial da Web World, 2000).
Web could bring various competitive advantagesboth for tourism companies and hotels. Theseadvantages will be addressed in more detail in thetopics of this chapter that follow.
Both tourism and hotel management haveexcellent prospects for growth in the on-line market.
Various hotels, airline companies and tourismagencies are investing thousands of dollars ondeveloping web strategies.
Marcoccio, Director of Research of theGartner Group, predicted that by the last threemonths of 2001, the on-line tourism market would beworth US$ 30 billion, compared to a turnover of US$5 billion in 1999.
According to studies by the Gartner Group, itwas also observed that 75% of Internet users usethe Internet to search for prices, timetables andtourism-related services (Official site of NuaInternet, 2001).
Hotel reservations made through the Internetshould generate more than 3.1 billion dollars in 2002,which corresponds to 25% of the total tourismrevenue via the internet. In 1998, more than 150million Internet users visited sites to make hotelreservations. This number is expected to triple overthe next few years, according to ADER, Director ofBear, Stearns & Co.. The same research survey alsonotes that the tourism industry is the one which hasshown the most rapid growth on the Internet(Official site of Nua Internet, 2001).

As mudanas no mercado so constantes e em

As table 1 above shows, worldwide tourismconsumption, in general, will grow at an average rateof 5% per year, up to 2004. For the same period, consumption over the Internet will grow by 47% to

occurring in ever-decreasing periods, as analyzedearlier in this chapter. Hotels should therefore viewthe changes as market opportunities and not asthreats.
Companies sometimes notice that changes areoccurring in the market, but even so, they do not react. In these cases, the biggest competitor is resistance tochange. Sometimes it is the fault of bureaucracy;other times, people feel afraid and intimidated by thenew technology (MCKENNA, 1999).
This resistance to change could ruin hotels,

both large and small. Flexibility is therefore essentialin order to react quickly to the competitive changes inthe market, if hotels are to avoid losing clients.
It is therefore necessary to demystify the Weband become aware of its wealth and potential. Only inthis way can the Web be seen for what it really is: a
place for finding people and things, for conversing, doing business and obtaining information.
THE INTERNET
Millions of people across five continents areconnected to a computer network which comprisesthe Internet. The word Internet is formed from acombination of the words intercontinental andnetworks..
The internet is nothing more than somethinglike a worldwide telephone network. Any machine
which is linked to the network can connect to anyother machine in the network, provided the user hasan electronic address for reaching a person orfinding a Website (VASSOS, 1997).
The Internet can also be seen as a set ofresources at a global level, for transmitting andretrieving information. The largest computernetwork in the world, it connects dozens of millionsof people in more than 160 countries.
It all began withARPAnet1 , sponsored by theUnited States Defense Department and developedin the laboratories of theMassachusetts Institute of
Technology. The origins of the Internet go back tothe 1970s and it comprises an enormous collectionof computer networks of all sizes, using all types of
platforms and operating systems. ALBERTINaffirms that
The Internet was not created for socialinterests, but with the strategic-militaryobjectives of the United States DefenseDepartment. The Internet was conceived byARPA in 1969, as a system for communicationinformation; the research sites of ARPA then
began to share information and enable access tocomputers everywhere (ALBERTIN, 1999;40).
Due to the enormous political pressure tocreate a channel for information, and thedevelopment of tools for organizing and locatinginformation, it was difficult to maintain the rulesrelating to types of use. As a result, in 1993, theInternet was opened for business.
The Internet has its own peculiar culturewhich needs to be respected. Its users see thesystem as a great democracy in which principles areestablished through the consensus of the
community itself and not imposed by any one ormore companies.

baseadas no uso.
To imagine the Internet as nothing more than avast network of interconnected computers is,without doubt, a narrow and short-sighted way ofseeing things. The beauty and usefulness of theinternet lies precisely in the incredible repository ofinformation that can be accessed using
telecommunication resources (VENETIANER, 1999).The resources available on the Internet can be
used by hotels to assist in the development of newand improved products and services, since they will
be basing themselves on the characteristics of theinternet. According to ALBERTIN
The characteristics of the Internettoday are: exchange and transmission of a lowvolume of information; single optimizedfunction for asynchronous data transfer;uniform services with absolutely nodiscrimination; and rates based on usage.Forecasts for the future are: high speedexchange of large volumes of data andmultimedia; optimized multiple functions, combining voice, images and data; variedmulti-level services, based on trust; acharging system based on the model of trafficand content (ALBERTIN, 1999; 145).
The ease of transmitting various forms of dataat high speed is the principal characteristic of theInternet which, if used correctly, can bring a numberof advantages to hotels. These will be addressed in
the item below. In the search to create competitive advantage, the use of the Internet becomes essential since, asanalyzed above, the market is becomingincreasingly competitive and segmented.
The Internet enables entry into some marketsthat are traditionally difficult to break into, thanks tothe fact that it enables products to be promotedmore easily, as well as offering new channels for
promotion and requiring less financial capital(ALBERTIN, 1999).
Every means of communication has itsstrengths. The strengths of the internet are its
speed, low setup costs, rapid changes, internationaldistribution, personalized relations, ease ofsearching and interconnections in cyberspace.
The capacity of the internet to selectivelyview information, choose different paths and carryout searches of all kinds and obtain responses forma large part of its attractions (DAVIS e MEYER, 1999).
Through on-line systems, via the Internet, it ispossible to eliminate the intermediaries such astravel agents, tour operators and banks, therebyreducing costs through direct sales over theInternet. This results in a higher profit margin, aswell as the opportunity to pass this saving on to the

However, in order to achieve success on theInternet, commitment is essential, just as for anyother strategy used by the company. A Web siteshould not be built if it is only to be laterabandoned, or if it only to be checked from time totime (EDWARDS, 1999). The speed of the Internetmeans clients expect a speedy response. If thisdoes not happen, they simply forget about the on-line services offered by the hotels.

THE WEB
Various people are connected in cyberspace,in a worldwide computer network, hence the name
World Wide Web, or simply, the Web.It should be stressed that there is a differencebetween the Web and the Internet. The Web is asoftware application that is located on the Internet,in other words, a tool that is available on theInternet, such as e-mails and chat programs.
According to PETERS,
people need to become aware thatnothing is sacred any more. Business peopleneed to accept the Web and not defendthemselves against it. Those who question itand do not try to gain advantage from the
phenomenon to improve their businesses areout of the market within five years (PETERS,2000; 20).
According to research by the IDC, by the year2010, people will spend more time each day on-linethan off-line. Not only on the Web itself, usingmicrocomputers, but also using cellular telephones, televisions, wristwatches, automobiles, exercisemachines and CD players (SIEGEL, 2000).
The Web is no passing market fad. TheInternet is developing and changing, and without
doubt, so is the Web. In relation to the Web,VENETIANER observes
will its technology develop? Withoutdoubt. To conclude, therefore, that it willdisappear is acute short-sightedness. Thereare already hundreds of millions of Internetusers and their number is increasingexponentially. The vast majority use the Webalmost daily (VENETIANER, 1999; 147).

According to research by the IDC, there willbe more than 80 billion Web sites available by theyear 2002 (Official site of Web World, 2000). In orderto differentiate a hotel site from all the other billionsof sites, careful planning is required when creatingthe electronic address, since this will be a decisivefactor for the on-line success of the hotel..
The electronic address (www.address.com.br)of the Web site is the first on-line contact clientshave with hotels and it should therefore beconsidered a powerful marketing tool on the Web.The domain name or electronic address on theInternet may be comprised of letters or numbers.
Normally, the domain name is comprised of fourseparate groups.

When creating a Web site, hotels may opt forvarious electronic addresses but the most commonstrategy is to use the name of the hotel or hotel chain,as this will facilitate the client when he is on the Websearching for a hotel site.

COMRCIO ELETRNICO

ELECTRONIC COMMERCE
Electronic commerce, or e-commerce as it ismore commonly known, can be defined as the
practice of buying and selling by means of digital
technologies such as the Web. Currently, there are basically two sets ofopinions and positions concerning the use ofelectronic commerce. The first is the view ofcompanies that compare the web to the gold rush. The second is that of companies that believe theycan obtain significant current value from the use ofelectronic commerce for communication between
branches and with clients and for the purposes ofpropaganda. (ALBERTIN, 1999).
A hotels presence on the Web should not beseen merely as a form of distributing information
without also viewing it as a way of doing business.Advantage needs to be taken of this presence, torestructure the distribution channels. PETERSstates that
Simply having a Web page and sayingyou are doing electronic commerce isnonsense. Open markets mean that anybodycan buy anything anywhere. Just having asite never did anybody any good. You needon-line relationships that help to buildsources of data (PETERS, 2000; 20).
Todays electronic mail resources can and willrapidly replace the ways of doing business. However, to achieve success with electroniccommerce, a great deal of research, marketingstrategies and sales support are required.
Electronic commerce involves more than justbuying and selling. It includes all kinds of pre andpost-sales efforts, as well as a range of auxiliaryactivities..
Electronic commerce can be used for thedevelopment of new focuses for market research,
creating appropriate sales leads, advertising, purchase and distribution of products, clientsupport, recruitment, public relations, businessoperations, production management and financialtransactions (ALBERTIN, 1999).
The fact is that people are increasingly turningto on-line purchases and seeking lower and morecompetitive prices on the Web. It is highly likelythat this will become an important mode for making
purchases over the next few years.Hotels can derive significant value through
the use of electronic commerce. For VENETIANER,
the advantages are:

potential buyers wherever they may be.Customization of the offer: tracking thehabits of each consumer. In certain cases itis possible to customize the virtual offer inorder to meet customers demands. Rapidup-dating: unlike physical stores or catalogsales, the publicity vehicles of the virtualoffer can be rapidly up-dated. There is noneed to physically alter a shop window or

Impulseshopping: Virtual stores are probably thegreatest stimulators of impulse sales. Afterall, it is so easy and quick to find whatyoure looking for and, why not, what youarent looking for as well (VENETIANER,1999: 156)
Hotels should use the Web as a newdistribution channel, both for sales and forcommunication with clients, since this could
bring a number of advantages.Hotels can develop various forms of
electronic commerce, but the most commonforms are Business to Business and Business toConsumer.
Business to Business, or simply B2B, is theterm used to describe commercial and productiverelations which take place exclusively betweencompanies or organizations. When companiescarry out commercial activities with their end

Table 2 above shows the significant growth ofelectronic commerce through the Business toBusiness and Business to Consumer modes in Latin
America from 1997 to 2000, as well as the estimatesfor the year 2003, which total more than 6.768 milliondollars.
Business to Business - B2B marketing ismuch more than sales between companies; itincludes propaganda, public relations andrelationship building (RIESENBECK, 2000). Thisstudy addresses only the Business to Consumer -B2C marketing mode, i.e. marketing developed bythe hotel which is aimed at the end clients .
Hotels have an excellent opportunity todevelop sales strategies through electronic
commerce, since people are increasingly consumingover the Web, for various reasons. The expected boom in electronic commerce
in Latin America is promising. Investments inBusiness to Consumer in the region should reachUS$ 8.33 billion by the year 2005, compared to US$194 million in the year 2000, according to JpiterCommunications. The number of Internet users willincrease to 66 million by 2005, or 12% of the regionstotal population. The research also reveals that ofthese, 22.7 million will be on-line consumers (officialsite of Computer World, 2001).

INFORMAO
INFORMATION
produtos.
Even among those who use the Web forleisure purposes, the majority are constantlyseeking information. The content of a site istherefore much more important than its technologyor appearance.
The Web has become the ideal environmentfor rapidly searching and finding all kinds of free
information. The information is seen as publicproperty and is without cost. For serious users, information is the master key. (VENETIANER, 1999).
The most important information is that whichis offered to clients, since this is the element thatwill, in fact, guarantee that they trust in the productsand services offered. For Vassos, those whoappreciate the companys Web site will probablywant to test its product or service (VASSOS, 1997;164).
The majority of Web users ask severalquestions by electronic mail before actually placing
their order, in order to assure themselves that thereare real people on the other side (EDWARDS, 1999).To obtain success on the Web, it is thereforeimportant to offer something for free, such asinformation, free gifts or even small services, as thiswill help to attract clients who are willing to pay forthe products.
Clients want to be able to access and receiveinformation on the products and services viaelectronic means, so it is necessary to provideresources that will enable them to requestinformation both about the services available on the
Web and at the hotel itself. The quality of information offered both at the

informao excessiva e intil. As informaes devemser teis, objetivas e honestas.
SegundoALDRICH, o que impulsiona a demanda atravs daweb so:
hotel itself and on the Web, will become acompetitive advantage in the hotel market over thecoming years. ALBRECHT observes that we haveseen the revolution in product quality and servicequality. Now it is time for the revolution in quality ofinformation (ALBRECHT, 1999; 108).
The information offered on-line to clientsshould be like a cup of water which is almostoverflowing. If there is not enough water in the cup, this means the quality of information provided isless than expected; if the cup is overflowing , thismeans the quality provided is much higher thanexpected (an unnecessary cost); if the water in thecup is like a bubble at the rim of the cup (held bythe surface tension), this means the level of thequality of the information offered matches theclients needs.
In the world of services, quality does not
necessarily mean luxury, perfection orsophistication. A service reaches a level ofexcellence when it meets the demands of its targetmarket (HOROVITZ, 1996).
The majority of people are already overloadedwith information. It is therefore important todiscover what clients are looking for on the Web, inorder to avoid offering excessive or uselessinformation. The information should be useful, objective and honest. ALBRECHT affirms that the
biggest mistake some companies make is tointerpret the issue of information quality as being a
problem relating to information technology(ALBRECHT, 1999; 110).Hotels should provide clear, objective
information on the Web, so that their clients caneasily find what they are really looking for.
DEMANDA
DEMAND
Demand can be defined as a group ofconsumers with specific homogenous characteristicsin relation to its profile an in relation to a product orservice.
Todays consumers are vastly different fromthose found in other economic phases. In the paceof todays world, work and personal responsibilitiesare increasing, altering the consumer profile.According to ALDRICH, factors which stimulatedemand through the Web are:
Pace of life: there is a growing demandfor products and services that enable peopleto work better, faster and more productively. In short, products or services that promisetime savings for consumers, even though theymay carry high price tags, are seen as offering

produtividade.
Assimilation of information: the digital era hasgiven people easy access to more informationthan they can possibly absorb.Communication: the unprecedented capacityto offer immediate feedback. Comparison:
between the characteristics and prices ofproducts offered by a vast number ofmanufacturers, on-line distributors, retailersand sellers (ALDRICH, 2000; 11).
It is observed, then, that there is an increasingdemand for services that add value and form meansof communication that can lead to time savings inthe acquisition of information.
Tabela 05: Porque os consumidores compram on-line?
Table 5: Why do consumers buy on-line?
A falta de tempo e as presses so exercidas
Table 5 above shows the reasons thatmotivate clients to shop on-line. The search forlower prices is the reason given by 75% forshopping over the Web and 50% do so for reasonsof convenience.
Lack of time and other pressures are
experienced by people everywhere managers, spouses, children and colleagues to do more anddo it faster (ALDRICH, 2000). The result of this is ademand for more rapid and more intelligent
products and services. The free flow of information over the Internet
has also prompted greater consumer demand forproducts that are personalized to suit theirindividual requirements (ALDRICH, 200).
Hotels need to recognize that the consumerprofile has changed. Nowadays, extraordinaryflexibility is necessary in order to adapt to this new
demand. The number of Internet users in Brazil andArgentina will grow over the next year at a fasterrate than in the United States or Great Britain, according to a study on habits of Internet usecarried out by American Express. According to thestudy, Internet users will increase by 33 percent inBrazil and 31 percent in Argentina, compared to theforecast growth of 10 percent in the USA and 12
percent in Great Britain (Official site of Infoexamemagazine, 2000).
This significant growth of Internet users in
Brazil will be largely due to the entry of classes Band C into the Internet user market.

Table 9: Number of Internet users in Brazil from 2001 to 2004.
In 2001, only 4% of the Brazilian populationhad access to the Internet. In 2004 this figure will
be 12%, which is equivalent to another 16 millionusers, as shown in table 9 above.
Due to the control users have overtechnologies like the Internet and the Web, userdemand has a higher power of decision over theservices and information offered by companies.
One of the most powerful capabilities of the
Web is that it enables the user to personalize thecontent presented. This is important because itgives the user more control to determine whichinformation will meet his needs (VASSOS, 1997).
The Web has upset the balance of power, placing an unprecedented amount of choice inthe hands of consumers. Hotels can no longerrely on unilateral strategies for developing
products and services based on wide researchsurveys in order to win market share. Theconsumer has become even more powerful inrecent years. At the click of a button, he gainsaccess to an immense range of products andservices. He has much more choice and canchange from one company to another morequickly if he is not satisfied.
On the Web, the user is totally free tointerrupt the flow of information that he receives, simply by abandoning the site, with total liberty.According to Mckenna (1998), what todaysclients want is control, which principally meanschoice, even though they are not fully aware ofthis fact.
Control and power of demand are directlyrelated to the freedom offered by the Web, since
users are able to freely choose the services andinformation they require.
With the various resources freely availableon the Web, on-line consumers are moreinterested in shopping with better informationand more speed, than necessarily obtaining the
best price. The tourists are more demanding because
they have more information about the product, the tourism destination, the benefits they receiveand the services. They know that if theirdemands are not satisfied, there are other
companies that are capable of creating idealconditions for their experiences (VALLS, 1996).

hospedagem.
Consumers are acquiring increasingamounts of data and information. Which theyuse to search for the products and services thatoffer the best combinations of price and quality, according to their needs and desires.
It is easy to satisfy a consumer who isuninformed. Nowadays however, such consumersare rare. Todays consumers have unprecedentedaccess to increasing amounts of informationabout products and they study this withdiscernment (MCKENNA, 1999).
In order to satisfy these demandingconsumers, hotels need to make informationavailable on the Web about the services offeredon-line and those offered at the hotel itself.
Todays demand requires that time savingbe incorporated into the products and services ,since the majority of people feel they have less
free time than in the past. For this, the consumer is seeking
alternatives that will make buying easier. Hewants to do it more quickly, but withoutcompromising on price or quality, irrespective ofwhether he is buying a hamburger or financing ahouse (ALDRICH, 2000).
Hotels that conduct business on-line mustbe prepared to provide services and informationquickly, since this is what consumers expectnowadays.
Speed is a relative term in Web marketing.
People become impatient if their questions arenot answered by the on-line team within a matterof minutes (JANAL, 1996).
A survey carried out by User InterfaceEngineering showed that 60% of the timeInternet users remain connected to a site iswasted if they cannot find the information theyare looking for (official site of Web World, 2000).
It can be seen then, that consumers willalways visit a hotel that enables them to savetime, in addition to its accommodation services.

CONCLUSO
CONCLUSION
Due to the continual technologicaladvances in means of communication,
particularly in relation to the Web, the nationalhotel market, i.e. the international market, isundergoing a period of change in which the Webis becoming an excellent opportunity to addvalu
