St. Thomas Becket Women’s Guild

Please join us for the Women’s Guild meeting on Monday, May 21st. The meeting will begin at 7 pm with the general business, door prize and split the pot followed by wine and snacks and Scarf/Necklace exchange. GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY FOR ST. THOMAS BECKET!

On May 15, 1968—50 YEARS AGO this Tuesday— Rev. Frank E. Wachowski was appointed by His Eminence Cardinal Cody to establish a new parish in what was then an unincorporated area of northwest Cook County

known as Prospect Heights, IL. Father Frank, as he was to become known to his new parishioners, was given responsibility for developing the boundaries of the parish

and acquiring land for the eventual construction of a church. The boundaries of the parish had to be worked out with neighboring parishes already in existence –

St. Alphonsus in Prospect Heights, St. Emily in Mt. Prospect and St. Catherine Laboure in Glenview. The area decided upon is from Palatine Road on the north, Wolf Road on the west, River Road on the east, and on the south, Gregory Street, the Soo Line

tracks and Foundry Road, from east to west. The task of finding an appropriate site for a church was a little more difficult. Property once owned by the Archdiocese that could have been used was claimed by the local park district for

a community park and swimming pool. After much searching for land centrally located, available and affordable, Father Frank was able to acquire a little over five acres from a landscape nursery on Lee Street (later renamed

Burning Bush when incorporated in Mt. Prospect). Finally, the parish could be organized and begin to function. The first Sunday Masses were said on September 28, 1969 in the gymnasium of Maryville

Academy. During the following week, arrangements were made with the local public school district to use the school directly across the

street from the parish property. From October 5, 1969, and for more than nine years thereafter, this was to be the “church” for weekend and some Holy Day Masses. Folding chairs, a portable podium and a collapsible altar were stored in the garage of a parishioner who lived

next to the school. Each week, the church would be set up on Saturday afternoon and taken down on Sunday afternoon. During the first month, 247 families were registered as members of the parish.

Also, this Friday, May 18th marks the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of St. Thomas Becket.

RE News in May May is one of my favorite months, not only because of the joy of First Communions and celebration of Mother’s Day but also because of the beauty of nature blooming with all the colors around us. On Wednesday, May 2nd, we have officially ended the Religious Education school year. Our students met in the St Emily's church for the Rosary (each grade had a part in leading the decade) and for the May Crowning. The students brought flowers from homes to the Blessed

Mother and an eighth grade girl crowned the statue of Mary. Afterward, everyone enjoyed farewell ice cream in the parish center. It was wonderful to see the kids grow in faith during this school year. I am very grateful for all our students, parents and catechist in our program for their help and participation. Now, everyone may take a deep breath and rest until we will see each other again in September. As a reminder, registrations for 2018/2019 school year are in progress. Please register on-line: www.stemilyreled.org You might want to know that our parish hosted First Communion Retreat for close to sixty kids from both St. Emily and St. Thomas Becket in April. Students were baking their own bread, they were threshing the wheat, painting sun catchers, making macaroni chalices and they also prayed together. This day is such a delight for all. The kids love the hands-on activities while learning about the Eucharist. Last Sunday, we have celebrated the First Communion in the parish. I feel privileged to see excitement and joy in kids eyes on their first day of being welcomed to the table of God. Congratulations to our students. I wish you all a geat summer with God!

Złote Gody naszej parafii—15-go maja, 1968 r - 50 lat temu w nadchodzący wtorek— Ksiądz Franciszek E. Wachowski został desygnowany przez Kardynała Cody'ego do założenia nowej parafii na

północno-zachodniej części powiatu Cook. Ksiądz Franciszek otrzymał odpowiedzialność określenia granic parafii i zdobycia miejsca na budowę nowego kościoła. Granice parafii musiały zostać uzgodnione z

sąsiednimi parafiami już wtedy istniejącymi—Św. Alfons w Prospect Heights, Św. Emilia w Mt. Prospect i Św. Katarzyna Laboure w Glenview. Znalezienie odpowiedniego miejsca na budowę okazało się trudniejszym

zadaniem. Nieruchomość, która kiedyś należała do Archidiecezji i mogłaby być wykorzystana na budowę kościoła była w użytku lokalnego parku jako basen i park. Po wielu poszukiwaniach miejsca zlokalizowanego centralnie, dostępnego i niedrogiego, ks. Franciszek zdobył nieco ponad pięć akrów od właściciela szklarni ogrodowej na Lee Street (nazwa później została zmieniona na Burning Bush). Wreszcie parafia mogła być zorganizowana i zacząć funkcjonować. Pierwsza niedzielna Msza Św. została odprawiona 28-go września

1969 r w sali gimnastycznej w Maryville Academy. W następnym tygodniu doszło do porozumienia z lokalną radą szkolną aby korzystać ze szkoły bezpośrednio po drugiej stronie ulicy od nieruchomości parafialnych.

Od 5-go października 1969 roku, i przez następne ponad dziewięć lat, był to nasz "kościół". Składane krzesła, przenośne podium i składany ołtarz były przechowywane w garażu parafianina, który mieszkał obok szkoły.

Każdego tygodnia “kościół” był składany w sobotnie popołudnie i rozbierany w niedzielne popołudnie. 247 rodzin zarejestrowało się w pierwszym miesiącu zatwierdzenia parafii.

Piątek, 18-go maja br, również upamiętnia 10-tą rocznicę poświęcenia pomnika Św. Tomasza Becketa.

Maj to jeden z moich ulubionych miesięcy, nie tylko z powodu radości Pierwszych Komunii i obchodów Dnia Matki, ale także z powodu piękna natury kwitnącej wszystkimi kolorami wokół nas. W środę, 2-go maja, oficjalnie zakończyliśmy rok szkolny religii. Nasi uczniowie spotkali się w kościele Św. Emili na różańcu (każda klasa uczestniczyła w prowadzeniu cząstki) i na nabożeństwie majowym. Uczniowie przynieśli kwiaty z domów dla Matki Bożej, a jedna z dziewcząt z ósmej klasy koronowała kwiatami figurę Marii. Potem wszyscy na pożegnanie cieszyli się lodami w sali parafialnej. Wspaniale było widzieć dzieci, które wzrastały w wierze w tym roku szkolnym. Jestem bardzo wdzięczna wszystkim naszym studentom, rodzicom i katechetom za ich pomoc i uczestnictwo w programie. Teraz każdy może wziąć głęboki oddech i odpocząć, dopóki nie zobaczymy się ponownie we wrześniu. Warto wiedzieć, że nasza parafia prowadziła rekolekcje do Pierwszej Komunii dla blisko

sześćdziesięciu dzieci z Św. Emilii i ze Św. Tomasza Becketa w kwietniu. Uczniowie piekli chleb, młócili

pszenicę, malowali projekty, robili kielichy z makaronu i modlili się razem. Ten dzień jest dla

wszystkich wielką radością. Dzieci uwielbiają praktyczne zajęcia gdy ucząc się o Eucharystii.

W ostatnią niedzielę świętowa-

liśmy Pierwszą Komunię w parafii.

Czuję się bardzo uprzywilejowana tym, że mogłam patrzeć na

podekscytowanie i radość w oczach

dzieci, które po raz pierwszy przystępują

do Stołu Pańskiego. Gratulacje dla naszych

CORPUS CHRISTI (Latin for Body of Christ) — JUNE 3 This year, once again, in a very special way our parish will celebrate this Feast. Everyone is invited to participate in a bilingual Mass at 11:00am and then a procession to the four altars that will be erected around our church for that day. All First Communion children, children and adults in traditional regional costumes are strongly encouraged to participate, all are welcome. Please note that the 11:00am bilingual Mass will be INSTEAD OF the 10:45am and 12:30pm Masses.

Uroczystość Najświętszego Ciała i Krwi Chystusa przypada w tym roku w niedzielę 3-go czerwca. W tym roku ponownie zapraszamy na przeżycie tego święta w bardzo specjalny i uroczysty sposób. Rozpoczniemy dwujęzyczną Mszą Św. o godz 11:00am po czym procesja do czterech ołtarzy wokół kościoła. Serdecznie zapraszmy wszystkie dzieci pierwszo-komunijne, dziewczęta i chłopców z koszyczkami kwiatów do sypania i z dzwoneczkami. Dorosłych również zachęcamy do ubrania się w stroje regionalne i do wzięcia udziału w tej pięknej tradycyjnej procesji. Patrick Dempsey’s Eagle Scout Project—Finding the Secret Garden April 21-23, 2018

My name is Patrick Dempsey, I am a Junior at John Hersey High School and a Boy Scout in Troop 235 at St Emily’s. My family has been a member at St. Thomas Becket for 22 years. I am an Eagle Scout Candidate, one of the chief requirements is to plan and carry out a service project that will benefit the community and allow me to provide leadership. I spoke with Father Chris last year about the possibly of

doing a service project at St. Thomas Becket. He suggested opening up the courtyard so that the statue of St. Thomas Becket would be more visible. Thank you Father Chris, Mrs. Mika and the St. Thomas Becket community

for allowing me the opportunity to do my Eagle Scout Service Project at St. Thomas Becket.

Question: Why are some feast days moved

from a weekday to a Sunday?

Answer: Throughout Church history, the

liturgical calendar has been filled with feasts, memorials, and solemnities commemorating

saints and Scriptural events. Some days have greater importance

then others, and they are instated as Holy Days of Obligation, in

which the faithful attend Mass and celebrate like on Sundays.

However, the local conference of bishops has the ability to remove a day from the "obligation" list or transfer the feast to Sunday, as

long as they have the prior approval of the Vatican. This is

done for a variety of reasons, but in the United States, it is primarily

a pastoral consideration. Decreased priest numbers leading

to decreased Mass time availability, as well as work and school day complications, led to declining numbers at midweek

Masses. To enable as many of the faithful as possible to participate

in the liturgy, some feasts are moved from a weekday to Sunday,

like the Ascension of the Lord.

Babies In The Womb Are “Pre-Born”

Well chosen words have power. Consider how the pro-abortion advocates marketed and sold their endorsement of abortion. It is not called pro-murder. It is called

pro-choice. They appealed to the culture’s mentality; a mentality that we had been exhibiting since the 1960s. We live in a cafeteria

culture. Thus, the Madison Avenue advertising gurus cleverly chose “pro-choice” in promoting death, but also in concealing the truth;

pro-murder. Therefore, with the knowledge and scientific understanding that life begins at fertilization, and that we are living

human beings in the womb, why don’t we all use the reference “preborn”? If we support life, and acknowledge that a child deserves our respect, support and protection while waiting comfortably in the

womb until the birth process, why not give them the dignity they deserve and refer to them as preborn? Let’s proclaim life accurately. Because now that we know the truth, referring to them as anything

less is not only unkind, it is also uninformed.
