The shape and dimensions of the components and e7uipment and the method

of design and manufacture and if assembled on site the method of assemblyand installation, shall ensure that !hen operated as specified and e#posed tothe associated mechanical, chemical and thermal stresses, the appliance shalloperate reliably and safely such that during normal operation no combustiongas posing a ha8ard can escape into the room in !hich the appliance isinstalled nor can embers fall out.

/or inset appliances 2made for fireplace recesses !ith a 0ertical chimney flueconnection and !here the manufacturer's installation instructions specify, inaddition to the flue gas connector, that an insulating mortar infill should beadded around the connector to seal the appliance to the chimney flue, then inthis case it is permissible for the flue spigot+socket o0erlap to be reduced to aminimum of @ mm.

6t shall be possible to clean the flue!ays of the appliance completely usingcommercially a0ailable tools or brushes, unless special tools or brushes arepro0ided by the appliance manufacturer.

 A means for the remo0al of the ash residue from the appliance shall bepro0ided.

&hen an ashpan is pro0ided, it shall be capable of containing the combustionresidue from t!o full charges of fuel !hilst retaining sufficient space abo0e toallo! ade7uate primary air flo! through the bottomgrate or firebed.

6f the ashpan resides in the appliance it shall locate in the ashpit in such a !aythat it allo!s the free passage of primary air and in such a position that it doesnot obstruct any primary air inlet control.

The ashpan should be designed and constructed to ensure that9 a iteffecti0ely collects the residue from beneath the bottomgrate: b it can beeasily and safely !ithdra!n, carried and emptied !hen hot, using the tool2spro0ided, !ithout undue spillage of residue material. The ashpan can besho0al shaped. 

The preferred design !ith the firedoor2s and ashpit door2s closed should

allo! de-ashing to be carried out. The de-ashing should be possible !ithoutundue effort. 6f it is necessary to remo0e the ashpit door to de-ash the fire, theappliance should be designed to minimise ash or fuel spillage during the de-ashing operation. 

&here the bottomgrate is remo0able it shall be so designed or marked as toensure correct fitting. 6f a deashing mechanism is fitted it shall be capable ofeffecti0ely de-ashing the fuelbed.

The appliance shall be fitted !ith either a thermostatically controlled primaryair inlet control or a manual primary air inlet control.

/or appliances !ith a boiler, a manual primary air inlet control shall only beallo!ed for boiler outputs up to B,1 k&.

The ad;usting control shall be clearly 0isible or shall be permanently marked sothat its operation is readily understandable.

The design shall be such that during operation of the appliance, neither ashnor unburned fuel can pre0ent the mo0ement or closure of the air inlet control.

The 'cold' setting of the air inlet control shall be clearly marked and the methodof ad;ustment shall be described in the user instructions.

The thermostat shall ha0e a 0ariable temperature range and be of theimmersion or dry pocket type. The pocket shall be positioned so that thethermostat senses the temperature of the flo! !ater from the appliance. 

&here a secondary air inlet control is pro0ided, the position of air entry shallbe so designed that the passage of air is not restricted !hen the firebo# is

filled to the manufacturer's recommended capacity.

6f a flue damper is fitted it shall be of a type, !hich does not block the fluetotally.

The damper shall be easy to operate and incorporate an aperture !ithin the

blade,!hich in a continuous area occupies at least ( cm( or 3 of the cross-sectional area of the blade if this is greater.

The position of the damper shall be recogni8able from the setting of thede0ice.

6f a draught regulator is fitted the minimum cross sectional area re7uirementshall not be applicable but the de0ice shall be easily accessible for cleaning. 

&hen the appliance is e7uipped !ith a charging door, that door shall be largeenough to allo! the appliance to be filled !ith the commercial fuelsrecommended by the manufacturer.

/iredoors and charging doors shall be designed to pre0ent accidental openingand to facilitate positi0e closure. 

 Any flue bypass de0ice shall be easily operable.

The e#treme positions corresponding to full opening and closing shall bestable and easily identifiable. 

/ront firebars shall be designed to retain the fuel or ash such that there is noundue spillage of ash or burning fuel from the roomheater during normaloperations, particularly during refuelling or de-ashing.
