Gecen yilki on yazimizda kurucumuz Vehbi Koc’un“Ulkem varsa ben de varim” sOzüne inancimizivurgulami~; Vakfimizin, Ttirkiye’nin en önemli ihtiyaciolan Egitim, Kültür ye Saglik alanlarrnda vermi~ olduguhizmetlerin bu felsefeden güç aldigirn belirtmi~tik.

Bu yilki On yazimizda ise gecmi~e degil, gelecegebakmayi tercih ettik. Bundan elli, hatta yuz yilsonra bugunun Turkiye’sinde bizim ya~adiklarimiz,ba~ardik1arimiz veya ba~aramadiklarimiz hangikriterlerle degerlendirilecek? Daha da Onemlisi, bugunverdigimiz hizmetler yarinin Türkiye’sinde, gelecegindünyasinda bizim ~u an amaçladigimiz hangi anlamlikatkilari yaratmi~ olacak?

Vakfin faaliyet raporu hangiformatta okuyucuya sunulacak? Ya da, sunulmasinagerek kalacak mi?

Bu sorulari yanitlamak cok güç. Gerçek olanbir ~ey var: Yaptigimiz her faaliyet, verdigimizher burs, hizmete açtigimiz her kurum,ba~1attigimiz her proje, destekledigimiz hersanatçi, yaninda durdugumuz her bilim insanidaha iyi bir tilke, daha iyi bir dünya ye dahamutlu bir gelecege giden yolu in~a ediyor. Buinançla ça1i~iyor, bu amacla kaynakiarimiziseferber ediyoruz.

e are pleased to present to you the secondissue of “VKV”, our Foundation’s annualreport.

In last year’s report, we reiterated our commitmentto our founder Vehbi Koc’s words: “I live and prosperwith my country,” stressing that our Foundation’sservices in the fields of Education, Culture andHealthcare —the country’s most vital issues— continueto be inspired by this very notion.

This year, however, we would like to look not tothe past but to the future. By what criteria are ouractivities, our successes as well as failures, going tobe judged fifty or even one hundred years from now?More importantly, what meaningful contributionsare, the services we provide and objectives we holdtoday, going to make to the Turkey and the world oftomorrow?

For instance, which new departments will KocUniversity have in 2113? Will there still be any“museums” as we know them today, or will they bereplaced by something totally different? Whichof the works of art we are adding to the Vehbi KoçFoundation’s Contemporary Art Collection in thetwenty-first century will be regarded as “master pieces”in the twenty-second century? Which Koç Universityfaculty member will be the first to win the Nobel Prize,and in which field of study? What will be the age

of the oldest Koç School graduate in 2113?In which format will we be presenting theFoundation’s annual report? Or, indeed, willthere still be any need to do so?

These are difficult questions to answer. Butwe do know one thing: Every single one ofour activities; every scholarship, every newinstitution we start up, every new projectwe initiate, every artist we sponsor, everyscientist we support is a step on the road tomaking our country and the world a better,happier place. It is this belief that is drivingall our work, and to which we rally all ourresources.

We are happy to share with you this report ofour past year’s activities, and hope that youwill enjoy reading it...

yilinda Istanbul Beykoz’da açilmasi planlananKoç Model Okulu, Vehbi Koc Vakfi, uluslararasimimari tasarim ~irketi Cannon Design ileMilli Egitim Bakanligi tarafindan ortak olarakyurutulen, egitim sorununa yepyeni bir baki~açisi getiren öncft bir deneme projesidir. KocModel Okulu’nda fiziksel mekânlar egitim yeagrenimde davrani~larin degi~mesine yardimciolacak.

Proje, uygulama a~amasiyla da katilimci yeörnek bir model olmayi hedefliyor. Turkiye’denalaninda uzman ki~i ye kurumlar da okuluntasarlanmasi ye uygulanmasi için katkidabulunuyorlar. Bunlarin arasinda DB Mimarlik,Aykar Muhendislik, Dinamik Proje, YBT YapisalTasarim Hizmetleri, Egitim Reform Giri~imi,TEMA Vakfi, Koç Ozel Ilkokulu, Ortaokulu yeLisesi, TED Universitesi, Mesrure Tekayve SamiGulgoz bulunuyor.

Beykoz Ortaokulu’nun bulundugu alana

• The Koc Model School in Istanbul Beykoz,scheduled to open in 2015, is a collaborativeeffort between the Vehbi Koc Foundation,international design firm Cannon Designand the Turkish State Ministry of Education.It represents a radically new approach toschool education, in which the shape of thephysical teaching and learning environment isused to help transform teaching and learningbehavior.• The participatory approach adopted duringthe project’s execution phase aims to becomeyet another best practice model. A greatmany institutions, companies and personscontributed their efforts during planning andexecution. These include DB Architects, AykarEngineering, Dinamik Proje, YBT StructuralDesign Services, Education Reform Initiative,TEMA Foundation, Koç School, TEDUniversity, Mesrure Tekay and Sami Gulgoz.• The Koç Model School is planned to be

Proje süresince edinilendeneyimlerin ye model okulyakla~iminin ba~ta Vehbi Koç Vakfi17 Okuluna, ba~ka bagi~cilarinyaptirdigi okullara ye tüm Turkiye’yeyayginla~tirilabilmesi için bir rehberhaline getirilmesi.

built on the site of the Beykoz MiddleSchool, and will provide Middle Schoollevel education for a student body ofabout 500, consisting of 5th, 6th, 7th and8th graders. Following approval by therelevant authorities, the model schoolproject will be built according to plan bythe Vehbi Koç Foundation. At completion,the school will be handed over to theIstanbul Special Provincial Administrationand the Ministry of Education.

• To create a secondary school modelthat could become a new benchmarkfor replication in other schools in termsof educational environment, approach,administration and learning environment.

To ensure that experiences gatheredduring all phases of the Model Schoolproject can guide similar transformationalprojects at the Vehbi Koç Foundation’s17 Schools, schools built by other privatecontributors and all other schools acrossTurkey.

To become a model for alternativelyadministered schools (e.g. charter schools.)

To spark the creationi of a research institute on learning

Koc Universitesi Tip Fakültesi’ne bagli olarak Topkapi’dakendi alaninda Turkiye’deki en önemli projelerden bin olanKoc tYnivensitesi Saglik Bilimleri Kampüsü in~asi 2013 yilrndada devam etti.

Bgitim ye ara~tirma amaçli Saglik Bilimleni Kampusuprojesi; Koc tJniversitesi Tip Fakültesi binalari, ara~t1rmalaboratuvarlari, genel hastane birimlerinin yarn sira, çocuk,travma ye onkoloji ihtisas hastaneleri, Hemprelik Fakültesi,ogrenci yurtlari ye ogretim üyesi lojmanlarindan o1u~an 200 binmetrekarelik buyuk bir saglik kompleksinden olu~uyor.

• The construction of the Vehbi Koç Foundation’s KoçUniversity Health Sciences Campus, one of the mostsignificant projects in Turkey’s healthcare sector,continued also in 2013.

• The 200,000 square-meter Health Sciences Campuswill be dedicated to medical education and research, andaccomodate parts of the Koç University School ofMedicine and School of Nursing, medicalresearch laboratories, general hospital units,a children’s hospital, a trauma hospital,an oncology hospital as well asstudent dormitories and I

The projects first phase isexpected to cost USD i8omillion, part of which willbe funded by the incomegenerated by the VKVAmerican Hospital, whichhas also been supporting theHealth Sciences project withits expertise and medicalstaff. The Koç UniversityHealth Sciences Campus willservice both patients, withpublic or private insurance.

Designed by Americanarchitectural companyCannon Design, the physicalspace of the Health SciencesCampus is flexible toaccomodate future needs,while bringing an innovativeapproach to research andthe medical sector byenabling a multidisciplinarycampus environment.

The project will berealized in two separatestages, the first of which iS

planned to be operationalin September 2014 andwill include the MedicalSchool building, the GeneralHospital, the Children’sHospital, social facilitiesand cafeterias.

• The second phase of the project will include two furtherspecialty hospitals, the School of Nursing, faculty housing andstudent dormitories for 583 students. Project plans for thesecond phase were submitted in November 2013; constructionwill begin after the relevant approvals are granted.
