BUFFALO STATE ALMA MATER
OUR FINEST HOUR
A toast to State, to all the days,All the laughter, all the tears.
You have made our friendships great,We’ll triumph through the years.
With hope anew we’ll face the stormBeyond which stands your lofty tower –
That will be our finest hour.
In years to come we’ll look to thee,Yearning for your guiding light. You’ll not fail us, Alma Mater,
Keep us through the night. When darkness comes and all hope dies,You will give us strength and power –
That will be our finest hour.

COMMENCEMENT GARDEN
The president of Buffalo State and the entire campus community honor the Class of 2017 by continuing the tradition of the Commencement Garden. Inaugurated in 2000, the permanent garden is located outside the main entrance to the Sports Arena. The garden represents the messages of environmental awareness, growth, and continuity, all visions embraced by the graduating class. Please enjoy the garden and use it as a backdrop for taking pictures of your graduates.
Katherine S. Conway-Turner, Ph.D.Katherine S. Conway-Turner, Ph.D., began her tenure as the ninth president of Buffalo State College on August 3, 2014. In 2016, Buffalo State was among five colleges and universities from across the country chosen to share in the Washington Center’s annual Higher Education Civic Engagement Awards. CONFERRING OF DEGREES
Today is a very special day on the Buffalo State
College calendar.
Today, we gather to celebrate the individual and collective
accomplishments of this year’s graduating class. Through
passion, perseverance, and many hours of studying, each
member of the Class of 2017 has earned a degree from
this great college. Congratulations on this life-changing
achievement!
Of course, life’s greatest successes are often realized with the
assistance and support of others. Today, we take the time to
thank family and friends who have helped encourage their
sons, daughters, husbands, wives, partners, and loved ones to
earn a degree. Please know that your support is a vital part of
the educational process. We also thank our devoted faculty and
staff. Buffalo State is dedicated to engagement, excellence, and
social responsibility—and our faculty and staff play a pivotal
role in preparing our students to reach their full potential.
As members of the Class of 2017 leave this arena and go out
into the world, my greatest wish is that each graduate finds
personal happiness, contributes positively to his or her
community, and pursues a career doing what he or she loves.
I also encourage every graduate to stay connected—in person
or online—with Buffalo State. You are a member of the
Buffalo State alumni family and will forever be welcome here.
We know that your greatest achievements are yet to come, so
please keep us informed about the milestones in your life.
Again, congratulations to Buffalo State’s Class of 2017!

An Erie County Democratic Committee member in Ellicott District 1 in 2016, she also completed the Open Buffalo Emerging Leaders Program in 2015 and served as a committee member for the Miss Borinquen of Western New York Leadership Development Program for young Latinas in 2016. In prior years, she worked as a community advocate in Queensbridge, N.Y. Her goal is to continue her work on an international level to have a broader impact on needs of frontline communities. With an energetic, outgoing personal demeanor, Mrs. Owens has successfully maintained the highest level of academic standing while putting her research into action.
Heather J. McCarthy
Heather McCarthy has earned a master of arts degree in multi-disciplinary studies, attaining a 3.95 GPA while customizing her studies to align with her career goals in geology and geosci-ence education. Demonstrating a selfless attitude, Ms. McCarthy is recognized by faculty and classmates alike for her dedication to improving the student learning experience for all Buffalo State students and developing creative ways to reach out to prospective students. She is always a reliable, mature, and enthusiastic supporter of the college’s mission. Ms. McCarthy is particularly passionate about student attitudes and engagement in undergraduate geoscience courses, the topic of her master’s thesis, which has generated interest across the geoscience education community. Her objective is to identify better ways to engage with students, and she developed and employed an institutional review board (IRB)-approved survey to gain a better understanding of how to increase science literacy in natural science foundation courses. She presented
her findings at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in 2016. In addition to her research activities, she serves as a graduate teaching assistant and provides tutoring and laboratory support in the Earth Sciences and Science Education Department. She runs test preparation and general help sessions, helps students prepare laboratory samples, leads field trips, and carries out other activities to support both introductory and advanced undergraduate geology courses. Her expertise is superb, and her ability to communicate challenging concepts is remarkable. She is a model graduate student who not only excels aca-demically but is involved outside the classroom as well. She has volunteered for the Families’ Child Advocacy Network for more than a decade, assisting children who live with social, emotional, or behavioral disorders or have been part of the juvenile justice system. She is an embodiment of high standards in higher education as well as the effective use of education to improve society.

ACADEMIC TRADITIONS
ACADEMIC PROCESSIONAL AND RECESSIONAL
The academic processional begins with the entrance of the seating marshals, who lead the degree candidates to their seats. Faculty marchers follow, escorted to their places by the head marshal. The mace bearer then leads the platform party, which includes the dignitaries, honorees, and college administration, to the stage. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the recessional order is reversed: the last to have entered the arena are the first to recess, in accordance with the ceremony’s ecclesiastical origins. The mace bearer leads the platform party, headed by the college president, at a quicker and more celebratory pace than in the processional. The platform party is followed by the faculty marchers and, finally, the graduates, while guests witness the pageantry to its close.
THE MACE AND MEDALLION
By tradition, seals of office and tools of authority have been incorporated in the ceremonies that invest individuals with the responsibilities and power of official leadership. Today purely symbolic, these objects once effected control themselves, the mace having been originally an iron club capable of breaking armor. About the middle of the thirteenth century, the mace was adopted for civic purposes. Much earlier, seals, from which the college medallion was derived, constituted the official signatures of heads of church and state. Today, the academic seal, representing the office of the college president, and the mace, standing for order and authority, have become part of the pageantry of symbolism involved in formal academic ceremonies. For Buffalo State, both mace and medallion are enhanced by their being the design and work of faculty members. The gold medallion was designed by the late Earl W. Wolfgruber, a member of the Design Department faculty for 20 years. A gift of the Class of 1968, it was first used that year for the inauguration of President E. K. Fretwell Jr. and has been worn on official college occasions since. A neck piece was added in 1987, designed and crafted by Stephen F. Saracino, professor of design. The 1968 inauguration was also the first occasion for the use of the rosewood and silver mace, designed and built by Douglas E. Sigler, at that time an assistant professor of design. The flaring silver flanges that circle the crown of the mace carry the engraved names of each president of the college. Incorporated in the total design are abstract concepts of flame, dove, and hands, used by the college to signify learning and aspiration. All formal academic processions are led by a mace bearer with this staff of authority in hand.
ACADEMIC ATTIRE
Academic attire—cap, gown, and hood—is higher education’s link with its long and illustrious past. Like judicial dress, it originated in the twelfth century with the medieval clergy, whose ecclesiastical dress probably derived, in turn, from civilian attire at an earlier age. Medieval scholars were almost all clergymen, and the earliest illustrations available show gowns that somewhat resemble cassocks. Universities of the period were primarily education guilds, the term “bachelor” denoting an apprentice, “master” a full member of the guild, and “doctor” one who had attained the highest degree of learning in a particular field. In the United States, academic attire began to be used extensively at the end of the nineteenth century. It has given America a beautiful and impressive method of signifying academic honors.
The bachelor’s gown is black and worn closed, distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves; the master’s is designed to be worn open and has long sleeves with square base and arc cut; the doctor’s, worn open or closed, has velvet panels down the front and three bars on the round, full sleeve. The color of the velvet may signify the field of study. The hood is the most distinguishing feature of academic attire. Its colors indicate the degree of the wearer and the institution attended. The bachelor’s and the master’s hoods are similar in design, but the bachelor’s is 3 feet long while the master’s is 3½ feet long. The colors of the silk lining exposed in the center of the hood are those of the institution conferring the degree, for example, blue and gold for the State University of New York. The edging of the hood indicates the academic discipline. Since the hood no longer serves as a head covering, the mortarboard, which originated in English universities, is worn. A long tassel of black or of a color appropriate to the degree is fastened in the middle of the top of the cap. The doctor’s cap may have a gold tassel. Recently, soft velvet tams have become popular for holders of advanced degrees. Academic attire serves two purposes: it gives a sense of dignity and tradition to the ceremony, and it links those who wear it—students, faculty, and professionals—to all the men and women who have sought learning over the past centuries.

GRADUATE HOODING AND VESTING CEREMONY
Buffalo State master’s degree recipients are individually recognized by the ceremonial placement of their degree-appropriate hoods, called hooding, during the Commencement ceremony. Hooding assistants from the Graduate School assist the Graduate School dean and designated Graduate School members, representing each student’s academic department, in the hooding ceremony. Certificate of advanced study (C.A.S.) recipients are vested with black-and-orange stoles.
STUDENT HONORS ACHIEVEMENTSTUDENT ORGANIZATION AFFILIATIONS
The Gold Honors Cord
Graduates wearing gold cords at Commencement have achieved the distinction of graduating with academic honors. An honors citation is given to bachelor’s students who have maintained a minimum 3.50 grade point average for all work completed at Buffalo State. Graduates who have completed a minimum of 54 credit hours at Buffalo State with an average of 3.80 to 4.00 are designated summa cum laude, 3.65 to 3.79 magna cum laude, and 3.50 to 3.64 cum laude.
The Gold Tassel
Graduates wearing gold tassels on their mortarboards have completed Buffalo State’s Muriel A. Howard Honors Program. Students must maintain a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average overall and take a number of honors courses to remain in the program. Qualified students enter the program as freshmen from high school, sophomores already attending Buffalo State, and juniors transferring from community colleges. Muriel A. Howard Honors Program students receive an academic scholarship of $2,500 per year. Scholarship funds are provided by private donations and administered by the Buffalo State College Foundation.
Military Honors Cord
The red, white, and blue cord is used nationally to recognize honorably discharged U.S. veteran students, current students serving in the U.S. military (active duty, National Guard, Reserves), and Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) students commissioned upon graduation.
