Local officials announced new winter sched-ules for the light show and the music fountain showat Egret Island Park. As of this weekend, the showswill begin at 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays,with a trio of show set 30 minutes apart. From Janu-ary through March, the show will be only on Satur-days. Friday showings will resume in April. Bothshows will be canceled during inclement weather.

Registration opened this week for the annualMusic Xiamen Fangmi Net Cup, a contest that willselect the city's top ten singers. The competition isopen to Chinese citizens and international entrantswith Chinese ancestry. Entrants must be between theages of 16 and 45. demic Press recently releasedtheir Green Book of Eco-Cit⁃ies, an index ranking China'scities in terms of livability.The rankings judge cities onthe basis of development po-tential and urban planningand design as well as con-struction and city manage-ment. On the survey of al-most 300 cities in Chinesemainland, Xiamen rankedfourth, trailing only Sanya,Zhoushan and Zhuhai.

Officials recently announcedplans for the creation of Xiamen Parkin the city of Trier, Germany, one ofXiamen's international sister cities.The 10,000-square meter park is joint-

ly financed by both cities and will in-clude architectural flourishes reminis-cent of southern Fujian. Trier is per-haps most famous as the hometown ofKarl Marx.

tem. Newly announced is a spur for Line Three that will run from the XiamenRailway Station to the Island Ring Boulevard and service points south on itsway to Xiamen University. Current overall plans for the subway system in-clude 414 kilometers of track and 197 subway stations.

Chinese Academy of SocialSciences recently releasedtheir annual global urbancompetitiveness report. Xia-men cracked the top 100for sustainability on thelist, coming in at 97. Thereport looked at more than1,000 cities around theworld.

In the report, the termsustainable competitive-ness refers to urbanizationand a environmentallyfriendly achievement. Therankings also looked at arange of other factors, in-cluding investment fore-casts, human capital, eco-nomic vitality, technologyinnovation, ecological envi-ronment, business environ-ment, infrastructure andglobal connections.

A total of nine greaterChinese cities ranked in thetop 100. Beijing ranked11th, followed by HongKong, Shanghai, Shenzhen,Guangzhou, Taipei, Nan-jing, Tianjin and Xiamen.

Xiamen fared well inthe fields of technology in-novation, ecological envi-ronment, business environ-ment, infrastructure andglobal connections.
