    Northeast Loui siana State College was originally known as Ouachita Parish Junior College, which was founded in 19 28 by the LouisIana Sta te Legislature. The College was supported by citizens of Ouae-hit" Parish \"\'ho lev ied a tax for its establishment and maintenance.

    The Ouachita Parish School Board and the Police Jur}' of the Parish selected the present site of the College. containing 38.1 acres, at a (ost of $22 ,860.

    The first s( hool year opened September 28 , 19.) 1 w ith one incomplete bu ilding, now known as T. O . Brown H all . a president, eleve n instructo rs, and 41 6 ~tude nts.

    In July 1934 the College became afElliated with Louisiana State Unive rsity through an act of the State Ltgislature. The ac t was based on an ag reement between the Ou achita Pa rish School Board and l. S.U. whe reby the Unive rsity would operate the institution to be known as N o rtheast Ce nte r of louisiana State Un iversity.

    In 1938 a $45,000 steel stadium a nd a $90,000 Student Center Building were constructed. The fo ll owi ng year saw the erection of a $100,00.0 library Building and a $12 5, 000 Fine Arts Building. The P resi dent' s horne. a two-story brick structure, overlooks Bayou DeSi ard w hich winds a.long the easte rn edge of the tampus. In 1949 a new science hall Wll ~ co nstructed at a (Ost of $40).000.

    The name of the CoJh:gt' wa ~ cha nged again in 1939-this time to Northeast Junior College of l.5. U.

    III 1944 the State Legislature author ized the transfer to 1.S. U. o f all lands and buildings owned by the Ouach ita P ari sh School BO:l. rd and connected with Nor theast Junior College. This increa.

    Ouachita Parish Junior College was founded in 1928

    and held its first classes in 193 1. Classes began on a 38.1 acre campus, with 4 16 students, eleven faculty members,

    and an incomplete building-Brown Hall .

    the college became a part of the university and its name

    was changed to Northeast Center of Louisiana State

    universi ty .

    State University . In 1944 the title to the coll ege was transferred to the university and mOre

    acreage was added to it, making a total campus area of fifty-one acres.

    1950

    In 1950, by act of the state legislature, the college was expanded to a four-year status and

    transferred from the University to the State Board of Education. The name was changed

    to Northeast Louisiana State Coll ege.

    "Freshman Week" gets under way with

    The Student Council is made up of two men and two women from each class. The president and vice president are chosen by the student body from the junio r class in the last month of the second semester of the year. \Vithin one week following, two men and two women are selected ffOm each of the lower classes and the other two fr om the junioe class. During the first month of the fall semester the freshman class names its representatives to serve on the council. The secretary and tr easurer are elected by and from the council members.

    The Reserve Officers Training Corps at Northeast is designed to enable college students to prepare themselves for leadership in military service. This organization, under the leadership of competent U. S. Army personnel, offers young men greater opportunities for adjustment and to have confidence in themselves and their fellow Americans. Completion of a four-year COurse in the R.O.T.C makes the graduate eligible for a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve.

    Coach Payne, at the end of his second year at Northeast State, has proved himself a very able coach of football. Payne has developed marked improvemen ts in the Indian squad in his sho rt time here, and, with these improvements in mind , the people of North east and Northeast Lou isia na can look forward to Indian victories for the forthcoming years.

    Payne was, before his arrival on our campus , head footba ll coach at Louisiana College. He a lso coached at Tallulah, N evi lle, Ouachita Parish, G ilbert and Winnsboro High Schools.

The second half was an entirely different game-the Indians, despite failing efforts to SCore again, repulsed all scoring threats of the BuJldogs. The lone Indian taily was scored by Danny Hoak on a 15-yard option play.

[n the first period it looked bad for our sCJuad as a high pass from center was culminated into a safety for W . K. when quick thinking Wade dropped on the ball in his own end zone to prevent a possible T. D . for the visitors. From here on it was all for the Tribe. Leos smashed over for the first goal on a IO-yard jaunt over the right tackle. The longest run from scr immage of the entire season was executed by Powell , who took advantage of a terrific block by Melancon and sped 86 yards to pay-dirt for a 21-9 victo ry.

    vs. McN eere Cowboyr Northeast was unsuccessful in the attempt to scalp the Cowboys in the main attraction c Homecoming activities. The Tribe's lone scoring threat was denied by th e persistent stubbornness of the Cowboys after Me Donald's aerials to Scogin and Laird , sparking the 65-yard sustained drive to the McNeese 9, Here McNeese took over ( downs. The sliding tactics of the enemy's line and the running of halfback Charles Dollar and All-Conference fullbac Jesse Cartete, proved too much for the out-manned Indian squad. Final SCO re was 35-0,

The lead was short lived, however, as the Demons came rollin! back to score two T. D .' s in the second quarter and one each in the third and fourth to "ice'" a 27-7 victory.

    ground out three touchdowns by the end of the third quarter, and at the final whistle the Indians were in possession of the

    ball only inches from another SCOre. The Preachers' final score arne in the third quarter to climax a 7s-yard sustained drive

    led by the running of Eugene Southern. The hard-charging

    Indian forward wall and th e superb punting of Wade were the main factors in keeping th e Wildcats from gloryland.
