Taconic Running Life A P R I L 1 9 8 4 ST. PATRICK'S lOK- PUERTO RICO.'UNO The wearing of the green and celebration of St. Patrick turned into waving of the red, white and blue of the commonwealth; the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, that is. Pedro Garcia, Miguel Matos and Michael Feurtado turned the Irish celebration into a preview of Randall's Island, June 23, John the Baptist parade as they romped to a 1-2-3 finish at SUNY campus, Purchase, March 18. Lori Jorgensen and Nancy Laun-Perez didn't help much either, running first and third, respectively, in the women's race. Mary Dolan, Armonk, did salvage some hardware for the Gaels squeezing between the two for runnerup laurels. Garcia and Matos took control early as the lead pack went through the opening uphill mile in 5:10. Gradually they pulled away and established the lOK race as a two man event. Through the halfway mark (15:23) there wasn't as much as the breadth of a shamrock between them, but it was left to Garcia to pull away and register a fine 31:55 clocking with Matos next at 32:17. Taking nothing away from Garcia, it should be noted that Matos is a mere eighteen years of age. Feurtado held on for third in 32:41 as Bob DiNucci closed strong, seconds later, for fourth. I c J o r g e n s e n w a s n e v e r t r o u b l e d W ^ 1 F as she, along with Garcia, took GREEN LIGHT ,.s.3 ROAD RELAY GETS GUINNESS home a beautiful Waterford crys tal bowl (courtesy Grimes travel agency) for her efforts.Lori was timed in 37:35 to Dolan's 39:05 a n d L a u n - P e r e z ' s 4 0 : 5 5 . The following is a collection of thoughts from a Taconic Road Runnerwho has been to Green Mountain Running Camp.

Question: How can Green Mountain Running Camp meet f t ie needs of aTa c o n i c R o a d R u n n e r ?

Answer: "The vacation aspect. - The ability to train in a wonderful energyfilled atmosphere without the strains that limit one in daily life. Thefood, three meals a day, resemble eating at a healthy gourmetr e s t a u r a n t . "The movltatlon is there. It flows from the camarada of the youngsters, adults, staff and world class competitors."

"The daily experience allows everyone to indulge in and sharerunning without inhereht distractions and negativity"

"A Week of Play"

"It provides the opportunity to consolidate and thoroughly absorbtraining theories and practices into what can work for one as anindividual. My consistent improvement is a credit to the whole campexper ience."

Like most of us. Bob started slowly. In those days he admits thereweren ' t many runners ou t the re . "Today, regard less o f wea ther, the reisn't a day you don't meet someone," says he. Bob is a bel iever of LSDruns wh i le tak ing in the s igh ts and sounds o f h is env i ronment . Bob enjoys his club. "It has a lot to offer even if you're not anactive runner. The club is a great bunch of people where I have mademany new friends." Advice for undergraduates? The commotion brought about by the so-called pacing of Joan Benoitdur ing las t year 's Bos ton mara thon is no th ing shor t o f absurd . A wor ldrecord was considered for d ismissal s imply because of pacing. I t shouldhave been that s imple. As i t turned out Benoit was not paced, but whati f she had? I t was good enough for Roger Bannister, good enough for ahost of world record achievers, but not good enough for Joan Benoit?

No, s i r. You see Joan Benoi t , i t was thought , was possib ly pacedby, o f a l l th ings , a man. Heaven forb id . Now there is movement a foot ,if you'll pardon the expression, to accept distaff records only in runsfo r women on ly. Fa i l i ng tha t , I suppose the re w i l l be an as te r i sk nex tto those records which were set in "mixed" races. Accordingly the males p e c i e s w i l l f o l l o w s u i t .

Age group records for men using leading female marathoners as pacemakers, wi l l have to be kept separate f rom those obtained in events formen only. Of course that 's preposterous for everyone knows the s t rongersex - that's the men - would not stoop to such tactics. Or would they?I mean when was the last time you saw a bunch of men keying on a Benoit,Grate Waitz, or Allison Roe to take them through a sub 2:25? Well...
