    ATTITUDE

Attitude matters a great deal withdelivery.

A confident presence is an aspect of yourcredibility and persuasiveness.

Yet people have speaker apprehension, fear of speaking in front of an audience.

This fear can become a self-fulfillingprophecy: We can make ourselves fail . .. or succeed.

    Youre just the messenger.

Dont stay focused on yourself or howpeople are regarding you. Its not justabout you.

Of the three elements necessary to thespeaking process: a message, anaudience for which the message is

designed, and a messenger, themessenger is less important.

  • 7/31/2019 1.Efective Presentations

    18/29

    DO

Be conversational. A public speakingsituation is still personal, if you speaknaturally and make eye contact. Look at

people. Theyll relate to you. Move like you do in normal life, but much

    less.

Stay focused on your material. Youre justthe messenger, not the point of themessage. If youve chosen topics well, itsvital that you get this information toaudience.

    19/29

    DO NOT

Give up on yourself. Theressomething you do well you that may

not know yet. Get help when you need it. Dont go

away and try to get it perfect onyour own before you let anyone see it.

Wait until the last minute. Its a lousyhabit anyway that holds you backfrom your goals.

    REHEARSAL

    Practice, practice, practice.

Get your presentation written at least

a week early and say them out loudevery day.

Say your presentation out loud asyoure writing them. Some phrasing

looks good on the page, but doesnt fitthe tongue.

It will remind you to keep languagetight.

    Rehearsal

    Places to practice:

    In the car.

In the shower or bathtub. Somewhere where you can shout without

    being heard.

In your mind when your lips are tired, and our lips will get tired is yourespeaking correctly.

    Rehearsal

    Repeat some tongue-twisters forconditioning :

    Rugged rubber baby bumpers

She sells sea shells by the seashore.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickledpeppers.

How much wood could a woodchuckchuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?Hed chuck all the wood that a woodchuckcould, if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

    ELEMENTS OF GOODSPEAKING

    VOCAL EXPRESSION:

You must speak loudly enough to beheard, clearly enough to be understood, and slowly enough for your audience tokeep up.

    NONVERBAL EXPRESSION

Body language matters because itinfluences your credibility and helps theaudience focus on your speech.Nonverbal frames the verbal.

  • 7/31/2019 1.Efective Presentations

    24/29

    Vocal Expression

There are five dimensions of voice that can bemanipulated for greater effect.

Volume - Speak louder or softer for emphasis.

Pitch - Stay at an appropriate mid-rangelevel.

Rate - Accelerate for a few sentences toexcite, slow down and pause to emphasize

some words. Articulation - Speak clearly with full voice.

Quality - The personality of your voice, resonant, throaty, nasal, etc.

  • 7/31/2019 1.Efective Presentations

    25/29

    Vocal Expression

Be appropriate in tone. Sometimeswhen we get nervous we laughinappropriately during serious moments. We may even become self-satirizing whennervous, playing as if it werentimportant.

While you dont want to take yourself soseriously that you pressure yourself intoerrors, you should treat the processwith respect.

  • 7/31/2019 1.Efective Presentations

    26/29

    Nonverbal Expression

The nonverbal frames the verbalin this sense: Whichever behavior

interrupts the other is the one thattakes audience focus.

If I move to draw their attention -

gesture or take a step - then speak, theyll hear me.

If I start to speak, then move

aimlessly, theyll watch but not hear.

  • 7/31/2019 1.Efective Presentations

    27/29

    Nonverbal Expression

Stand still for a moment and makeeye contact with your audience.

Then start. Speak only once youvemade contact.

Stay in one place for awhile. Dont

pace around through the speech.Choose 2 or 3 places whereyoull take a step or two.

  • 7/31/2019 1.Efective Presentations

    28/29

    Nonverbal Expression

Gesture naturally, as you would whenyou talk with friends.

Free your hands as much as possible toallow that to occur. Make the manuscript your friend with large

font, double spacing, and only completesentences on one page.

Use the lectern for your notes. Keep your hands out of your pockets.

  • 7/31/2019 1.Efective Presentations

    29/29

    Nonverbal Expression

Clothing and accessories are an aspect ofyour persuasion.

Dress appropriately to the occasion. Dont hide under hats or behind

    sunglasses.

    Watch jangling jewelry.
