The 2013 Fort Knox Amazing Race Winter Edi-tion has arrived! Racers will take their mark at the Lindsey Golf Course staring at 8:00 AM on Saturday, February 2.

This whirlwind race is based on the popular reality TV series, The Amazing Race, where teams of two travel around the world performing mental and physical challenges in order to win the grand prize of a million dollars. Fort Knox is not giving away a mil-lion dollars, and you do not travel the world, but we can promise an adventure! Teams will be competing in uniquely created mental and physical challenges for a chance to win the cash prize of $1,000 and brag-ging rights of Fort Knox Amazing Race Champions.

Major Candace Hurley, who competed in the 2011 Amazing Race, describes the experience as, “nothing short of amazing! Although it was not the "real" thing like on TV, it was an amazing replica, lled with mental and physical challenges, which fostered team work and mental fortitude in order to complete the entire course.”

The Fort Knox Amazing Race oers many rea-sons to compete. Some do it for the competition. Others do it for a chance to win $1,000. For MAJ Hur-ley, there are a multitude of reasons she participates.

“I love it all, the support from the sta, working

with teammates and a chance to get to know Fort Knox better. It is an amazing adventure right here on Fort Knox,” said MAJ Hurley.

When asked if she would take part in the con-test again, MAJ Hurley’s response was, “Yes! No hesi-tation, a resounding yes. My husband and I plan to participate in the upcoming race.”

“The Family and MWR Team have been plan-ning for months to make this year the best. We hope that everyone will come out and support the teams that compete,” said Ryan Noble, Recreation Program-ming Team Leader. “This is one of my favorite events that we oer. I hope others will share in my passion for outdoor recreation and sign up and participate and especially to compete for the $1,000.”

Community Vendors will be set up at the end of the race for free giveaways. A special thanks to N Touch Message and Wellness and HP for sponsor-ing this event.

The cost is $20 per person to register and in-cludes a participation t-shirt. Space is limited to the rst 20 teams. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent/legal guardian as their designated teammate. This event is for Military aliates only.

Don’t miss out on your chance for a great ad-venture and an opportunity to win the grand prize of $1,000! Call today and sign up by calling (502) 624-1413 or email [email protected].

New York Times Bestselling suspense author Lisa Gard-ner discusses and signs her newest thriller Touch & Go on Thursday, February 7, at 12 PM. Gardner is the au-thor of 16 bestsellers, including two series: the Detec-tive D. D. Warren novels and the FBI Proler series. Touch & Go, her 28th novel, will be released February 5, 2013. It follows novice private investigator Tessa Leo-ni’s inquiry into the disappearance of the Denbe family. With no witnesses, no motive and no ransom demand, Leoni races against time to discover what happened. Gardner’s rst novel, Walking After Midnight, was pub-lished in 1995 by Silhouette Intimate Moments. Writ-ing as “Alicia Scott,” she published 13 romances before her rst thriller, The Perfect Husband, published in 1997, launched her FBI Proler series. The series depicts the cases of investigator Rainie Conner, FBI Proler Pierce Quincy, and Quincy’s daughter Kimberly. The subse-

quent books in the series are The Third Victim, The Next Accident, The Killing Hour, Gone, and Say Goodbye. Gardner’s Detective D. D. Warren, a veteran Boston police detective, debuted in 2005’s Alone. Gardner describes Warren as a workaholic, “bloodhound on a scent” without a personal life. Over the course of her novels (Alone, Hide, The Neighbor, Live to Tell, Love You More, the eNovella The 7th Month and Catch Me), Gard-ner eshes out the detective, adding a personal life and the complications that it entails. Gardner’s work has also been adapted for television. The Perfect Husband was adapted as the TV movie In-stinct to Kill starring Mark Dacascos. The Survivors Club and Hide have also been brought to life on the small screen. Copies of Touch & Go will be available for sale at the event. By Kerry WeintraubThe traditional day of love, or Valentine’s Day as many formally know

this holiday as, is celebrated on February 14 every year. Valentine’s Day is a day to show that special someone how much you love them. There are many ways that couples celebrate. Some traditional ways include exchang-ing gifts, owers, chocolates, and enjoying a nice dinner somewhere spe-cial.

This year, challenge yourself to be original and put your own twist on showing your Valentine how much they mean to you. Not sure where to start? Not sure how to come up with ideas that your loved one will not expect and will add some romance to your traditional way of celebrating? Here are some ideas for some heartfelt original gift ideas. Take some extra time and try writing your loved one a hand written love letter or write a top ten reasons why you love your Valentine. Not all gifts need to be ex-pensive, just from the heart. Show your creative, whimsical side and make a bouquet of owers with pipe cleaners and tissue paper. This bouquet will last longer. Go old-school and make a mix tape (burn a CD) of those special songs which have meaning to your relationship or which remind you of your special Valentine. There are many more ways to add a little romance and have a little fun showing your Valentine how much he or she really means to you.

Let the Saber & Quill help you to make the night special for you and your special Valentine. Saber & Quill will be hosting its annual Valentine’s Day Dinner on February 14. Bring your Valentine and enjoy a great meal in a romantic atmosphere. To make reservations, please call the S&Q at (502) 942-0959 ext. 210/211.

FASCHING CELEBRATED AT S & Q

by Saber & Quill Executive Chef Craig Osterhoudt

By Kerry Weintraub

Fasching is a German tradition that is celebrated every year across Germany. On Sunday, February 10, Saber & Quill will be hosting this century old German tradition. Families are invited to dress up as their favorite idol, cartoon character, super hero or put on a fun mask and come out and experience this fun lled event from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. There will be many fun activities and games for children 2-16. Children will be able to participate in various German children’s games for a chance to win prizes. This event is free.

For families that are not familiar with Fasching, it is simi-lar to Halloween. Fasching celebrations start on the eleventh of November at 11:11 AM. The festivities typically involve public celebrations such as parades and carnivals that have circus ele-ments to them. People attending the festivities generally dress up as fools, clowns, or harlequins.

Dust o your Halloween costume or get creative and come up with a fun way to dress up and join us for a fun lled Sunday afternoon for the Family Fasching celebration at the Saber & Quill. Harshaw Trane and Snappy Tomato are proud sponsors of this fun lled event.

by Tracy WhitakerThe words loyalty, duty, respect, seless service, honor, integrity,

and personal courage are associated with the Military. February's Volunteer of the Month, SSG Timothy Rhodes, honors these words with his Military service, but also honors the words seless service’ by also volunteering in his community each month.

SSG Rhodes grew up in the small town of Pataskala, OH, which is 30 minutes east of Columbus. He has been in the Military since July 2007 and, due to his outstanding leadership skills, was selected in October 2011 to be the Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS) President. He is a licensed sky-diver and loves four-wheeling and other outdoor activites.

Rhodes enjoys volunteering simply because he likes to help other people. He has volunteered for a variety of dierent places including Child, Youth and School Services, Allegro Assisted Living in Elizabethtown and the Audie Murphy Club.

“The feeling I get when I lend a hand is like no other feeling. I try to volunteer at least two to three times a month and most of the time it ends up being ve to six times,” said Rhodes.

One of his most memorable experiences as a volunteer was while volunteering at Allegro Assisted Living. He helped take a group of ladies, in their 80’s and 90’s, to visit Shaker Town. They spent the whole day visiting and had a great lunch. “Seeing all of their eyes light up was a great time,” said Rhodes.

Mobile Payments by Eden Barnett

It used to be a big deal wheneveryone started to do their bankingonline. Very rarely do most of us setfoot in a physical bank anymore. Atthis point in our lives, phones are mobile computers, and banking canbe done anywhere and at any time. What used to be simply a device fortalking to another person long distance can now be used for limitlessamounts of things. People can evenstart paying for items with their cellphones. Here are some of the applications (apps) I found that canhelp make your purchases mobile.

Google Wallet is an app on theAndroid market that literally has the slogan,“Make Your Phone Your Wallet.” You can actuallyload all of the cards in your wallet to the app on yourphone, whether it is MasterCard, Visa, American Expressor Discover. It can even load your reward cards from your favorite stores. If you are as tired as I am of carrying all of yourstore cards in your wallet, or loaded up on your keychain, thenGoogle Wallet is definitely for you. There are also safety featuresinstalled to keep your information secure such as needing a pinnumber to get into the program. To work Google Wallet, all youdo is log into the app, click on the card you want, and tap it to anycontactless point of sale terminal, which more places are startingto carry. Your payment will then appear shortly on the transac-tion record on your phone.

Square Wallet is the second app I found for mobile payments and is available for both Android andApple operating systems. Square Wallet, however, is morethan just a wallet. Just like Google Wallet, you can load allof your cards to one place on your phone. You can alsokeep track of your favorite places and even search for

new ones on the Square directory. If your friends havefavorite places that they like to visit, Square

Wallet also offers the feature to buy gift cards. The coolest thing about this app, however,

is earning rewards. You can discovernew places and earn discounts forshopping there.

The last mobile payment appthat I'm going to discuss is calledLevel Up. This app definitely focuseson the reward aspect of using theirservice. It is completely free, and youearn rewards each time you use it at acertain location. First time at a place?Reward! Been back five times since?

Reward again! I love this app simply because it costs you nothingand gives you discounts that you wouldn't normally get. Just loadyour cards on to it, scan your Level Up code, pay and save.

We are living in a time of great change, and it wouldn'tsurprise me if the future didn't have physical credit and debitcards in it. This is only the beginning of mobile payments. If youare a little bit tech savvy and not afraid to try new things, thenthese apps are definitely for you. Not only are they convenient, but they can be fun and help you save money.

AUTHOR TO DISCUSS DIAMOND HOAXBy Michael Steinmacher

Historian Ron Elliott is the rst to admit that the subject of his new book, American El Dorado, forces one to ask, “What do you do when the actual facts are almost impossible to believe?”

“Despite the fact that the facts stretch credulity,” Elliott confesses with a laugh, “I didn’t make anything up.”

Elliott will discuss and sign his book at Barr Library on February 28 at 6:00 PM as part of the Authors at Your Library program. He explains that American El Do-rado is the story of a Hardin County native at the heart of a diamond hoax during the 1870’s. It was a scheme that ultimately defrauded people of up to $500,000. Wealthy nanciers, mining engineers and gemstone experts such as Charles Lew-is Tiany (founder of Tiany & Co.) lent credibility to a plot that ensnared famous Americans, including Generals George McClellan and Benjamin Butler, and news-paper editor Horace Greeley.

While the action takes place largely out West, Kentuckians Phillip Arnold and his cousin John Slack, are the prime movers of the plot, and Elizabethtown serves as a supporting locale. Another colorful Kentuckian, Asbury Harpending, a nancier who unwittingly added ca-chet to Arnold and Slack’s machinations, is important to the story and is what drew Elliott to the subject. Elliott’s encounter with Harpending’s hard-to-believe autobiography (in which Harpending tries to dispel his own role in the hoax) served as the starting point for Elliott’s book.

Copies of American El Dorado will be available for sale at the Library event. For further information, call Barr Library at (502) 624-1232.
