REFLECTING ON THE WORD
27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
October 8, 2017
FOCUS: The Error of Entitlement
Reflecting on the Word
When I listen to reports about what people do or do not have and how they respond to their life
situations, I am struck by the difference between those who are grateful and those who feel
entitled. It seems that a sense of entitlement fills many of us and destroys the virtues of gratitude and
responsibility. When I feel entitled, I often envy what others have and focus on what I do not
have. Envy blinds me from seeing what I do have and keeps me from being grateful. It also feeds the
need for more rather than seeing that I often have enough. I can become willing to do anything to
grab more, even violence.
This is also the dynamic of the gospel parable. The tenants wanted what was not theirs. In their lust
for more they become violent, even to murdering the owner's servants and sons mistakenly thinking
that would be given the vineyard. Envy, lust, and blindness yield more than wild grapes. They feed
on themselves until something or someone else ends that vicious cycle. The Letter to the Philippians
offers an antidote: Seek whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and gracious. Truth can lead
to accepting what our gifts are and are not, and help us grow in right relationship (justice) with God,
others, and ourselves. Truth invites gratitude for our gifts and the ability to develop them. Truth
fosters appreciation of other's gifts. Then when we mourn what we lack, we discover that we have
all we need, or we find ways to seek what we need without destroying another. Pray, "Look down
from heaven, and see, take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted." Let it be
enough.
Consider/Discuss:
Have you ever felt entitled? How did that affect you?
What helps you nurture gratitude and live the words of today’s second reading?
Praying with the Word
Generous God, you have gifted us in many ways. How can we ever thank you? When envy,
jealousy, or the wish for more blinds us to the gifts we already have, heal us. Help us appreciate
what you have given to us and affirm the gifts that you give to our brothers and sisters. Amen.
Peace,
New to St. Joseph? Our Hospitality Committee would love to welcome you! Contact them at [email protected] or call the parish office at 410-674-9238. We would love to meet you and answer any questions you may have about our vibrant and growing parish community!

Our practice owes its existence and prosperity to the Grace of God. It is our mission to provide quality Pediatric Dental care and experiences; to bring joy and health to children. When we succeed, the thanks and praise belong to God. When we stumble, we renew our efforts, and place our trust in God’s care. We sincerely appreciate the confidence and trust that our patients and their parents have placed in us.
