The use of geotextiles in construction projects around the world has grown substantially since their humblebeginnings in the 1960’s. Geotextiles are now used in virtually every civil engineering construction project.
A number of generic classes of geotextile are manufactured with the most popular being the nonwovenneedle punched variety, due to its versatility and overall performance. bidim® was first produced in 1969 andcontinues to lead the way in terms of technical performance and range of applications.
bidim® nonwoven geotextiles were first introduced to Australia in 1977 when Geofabrics Australasia set upoffices in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. 1987 marked the beginning of an era in geotextilesin Australia, with the manufacture of the first rolls of bidim® continuous filament nonwoven needle punchedpolyester geotextile in Albury, New South Wales. Since this small start bidim® geotextiles have become a partof almost all construction projects carried out in Australia. Geofabrics Australasia and bidim® have becomesynonymous with;
A number of key points make bidim® the geotextile of choice
• Quality bidim® is manufactured to ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System Standards. As a result you can rely
on the fact that, when you use bidim® for your construction project, you receive the same quality fromthe first to the last metre on the roll.

APPLICATIONS
bidim® nonwoven geotextiles are used in a multitude of construction applications, however, it is importantto understand that a “one size fits all” design philosophy is inappropriate. bidim® is available in a range ofgrades to cater for the diverse range of functions and applications. The choice of a suitable geotextile shouldbe based on the key performance properties of the geotextile which is unique for each application. Examplesof the applications and relevant performance properties are shown below.

Filtration
In all soils, water flow at the interfacebetween coarse and fine materialsoften leads to unstable substrates.
A geotextile with properly specifiedpore size acts as a filter fine enoughto simultaneously retain the coarsematerial and prevent piping, yetcoarse enough to pass fine materialsand ensure ongoing permeability.
bidim® nonwoven needle punchedgeotextiles are used to replace thick, expensive granular filters in subsoildrainage and revetment applications.
bidim® geotextiles outperform naturalfilters in many applications, particularlyrevetments and subsoil drainage. Theextremely high porosity of nonwovengeotextiles allows water flow whilelimiting fines migration. The complexflow path mimics a natural filter andprovides considerable cost savingover a traditional graded filter.
Drainage
The ingress of water into a structure,be it a road, retaining wall or basementcan have a disastrous effect on the lifeof the asset. Good drainage removesexcess water from structures, ensuringtheir stability and longevity.
bidim® nonwoven geotextiles areideally suited to subsoil drainage
systems used to remove water fromroad layer works, sports fields andbehind retaining walls. The complexneedle punched structure acts toretain a large range of soil particleswithout reducing the permeabilityrequirements of the drain. The threedimensional structure of a nonwovenneedle punched geotextile ensureshigh flow rates and hence excellentdrainage performance. The openingsize and porosity of bidim® has evolvedfrom years of experience in Australiansoil conditions ensuring optimumperformance.
Separation
Construction of roads, embankmentsand platforms over poor qualitysubgrade material results in lossof high quality fill material into thesubgrade and contamination of the fillmaterial. This means more fill materialis required to construct a stable base.Nonwoven Geotextile separators havebeen used with great success overthe past 30 years in Australia to limitthe extent of this problem.
bidim® needle punched geotextilesare used extensively in construction
of roads and embankments over softground. The separation geotextileensures the soft subgrade does notcontaminate the fill material and thequality of the fill is maintained. Thehigh elongation characteristics(>50%) of bidim® nonwovengeotexti les l imits instal lationdamage, which ensures long termperformance.
Protection
Polymer liners in landfills and pondsare prone to puncturing damageeither from rough subgrade or thecover material placed over the liner. These punctures and the subsequentleaks from the liner system can havea negative effect on the environmentas contaminants enter the watertable.
Heavyweight bidim® needle punchedgeotextiles provide excellentprotection to liner systems in landfills, heap leach pads and general pondlining applications. The grade ofgeotextile depends on the particle sizeof the cover material and subgradestrength. The protective geotextilecushions the forces that wouldotherwise be directly transferred ontothe liner. The inclusion of a geotextileprotection layer can extend the lifeand maintain the integrity of the liningsystem for many years.

Fill placement
Fill over a geotextile should be placed in such a way that the integrity of the joints is maintained. Drivingvehicles or machinery directly over the geotextile must be avoided, as this leads to damage of the geotextile.Use only light construction equipment initially over weak soils.

APPLICATIONS CONSTRUCTION
Reinforcement
The use of geotextiles in slope andwall reinforcing applications hasgrown since the first applications in the1970’s. While rigid structures requirestiff geosynthetic products, flexible ortemporary structures can be constructed
at a fraction of the cost with continuousfilament geotextiles.
bidim® continuous filament geotextilesare often used as reinforcing elements inretaining structures which are designedto flex, such as blast walls, bund wallsor temporary retaining structures. Thenature of the continuous filamentsensures good strength characteristicswhile the needle punching allows ahigh level of flexibility and drainage ofthe surrounding soil.
Road Maintenance
Without adequate maintenance, paved roads deteriorate rapidly. The escalating cost of paved roadrehabilitation highlights the need forcost effective solutions to this problem.Since the early 1980’s the use ofgeotextile reinforcement in surfacingseals has been successful worldwide.Sealmac® paving fabric is a nonwovengeotextile which prolongs road life, reduces overlay thickness, preventswater ingress and retards reflectivecracking.
Sealmac® is a continuous filamentnonwoven needle punched polyesterpaving fabric, which provides stressrelief, waterproofing and reducesreflective cracking functions in newand existing paved roads. Designedspecifically for Australian conditions, the PF1 and PF2 ranges haveundergone a number of years oftesting and refinement to provide thebest overall performance.
Joining
When required to cover large areas, joining is oftenrequired. The method normally depends on thestrength of the subgrade. In the case of a subgradewith a CBR of greater than 3 simple overlapping maysuffice, however where the geotextile is placed overa subgrade with a CBR of less than 3, a sewn joint isrecommended.
Storage
For storage of less than 6 months, bidim® geotextilesdo not require special storage conditions, as theproduct is wrapped in 180µm co-extruded High DensityPolyethylene and Linear Low Density Polyethylene fortoughness with secondary UV stabilisers for greater lifeunder Australian conditions. Once the protective wrapping is removed the productshould be installed or placed under cover. ExtendedUV exposure should be avoided.
Handling
The maximum weight of a 6m wide roll of bidim® isapproximately 250kgs. In most cases the geotextile canbe rolled out by hand. However if this proves difficult, aspecially designed dispensing frame can be providedto help deploy the rolls. Narrow width rolls (2m & 3m)are available on request if site access and layout isrestricted.
