2009 season ouTlookAfter reaching the postseason for the fourth-straight season in 2008, the Fighting Illini baseball team returns six starters in the field and four pitchers with weekend starting experience for a 2009 season that holds great potential to raise the national profile of the Illinois program

“We’re a very athletic team that should be strong on the mound,” Illini head coach Dan Hartleb said “We’re experienced in key positions defensively and we’ve got two-thirds of the lineup returning, so we’re a veteran group that has been through the ups and downs, and understands what it takes to win at this level The team gets along well with each other and is very supportive of each other”

Hartleb opens his fourth year as head coach with associate head coach eric Snider and pitching coach Ken Westray once again at his side, and with the addition of former Illini All-American pitcher Drew Dickinson to the staff as a volunteer assistant Dickinson was the 2001 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and has pitched professionally for the past six years

Illinois returns a strong, experienced core in the field, including senior third baseman Dominic altobelli, junior shortstop Brandon Wikoff, senior second baseman/center fielder Joe Bonadonna, junior catcher aaron Johnson, senior outfielder nick stockwell, junior outfielder Craig lutes and sophomore outfielder Casey McMurray, and adds to it a very athletic and talented crop of rookie position players

Wikoff and Bonadonna return after being named to the All-Big Ten second team in 2008 and being one of the best defensive middle infield combinations in the Midwest Altobelli is completely recovered from a shoulder injury that forced him out of 13 games near the end of last season and should be a pillar at third base and in the middle of the batting order, and Johnson continues to improve after hitting 306 and throwing out over 40 percent of would-be base-stealers in 2008, his first year of collegiate baseball

McMurray is coming off a season that earned him Louisville Slugger Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America honors, while Stockwell and Lutes are two of the best defensive outfielders in the Big Ten and are more than capable at the plate

On the mound, junior kevin Manson was a third-team All-Big Ten selection and named to the All-Big Ten Tournament team in 2008 Manson, along with seniors aaron Martin and Mike stankiewicz, and sophomore Phil haig started 38 of Illinois’ 56 games (68 percent) in 2008 In addition, the

Illini return all of the hurlers who came out of the bullpen in 2008 and add a highly rated crop of new arms to the staff

inFielDWho’s BaCk: Three of the four starters on the infield from a year ago are back in 2009, in third baseman Dominic altobelli, shortstop Brandon Wikoff and second baseman Joe Bonadonna Not only did the trio hit 329, 369 and 356, respectively, in 2008, but Wikoff also led the Illini with 61 RBIs, Bonadonna stole 26-of-32 bases and Altobelli was third on the team with 38 RBIs despite missing 13 games late in the season Wikoff and Bonadonna also ranked among the Big Ten leaders in fielding assists and double plays in 2008

“We should have one of the premier left sides of the infield in the conference in Altobelli and Wikoff,” Hartleb said “Bonadonna gives us depth in different areas because he can play any infield or outfield position And Pete Cappetta also adds athleticism and a good bat”

In addition, either junior Mike giller or sophomores Matt Dittman or Cappetta could figure into the mix at first base

“At first base, we’ll have some options,” Hartleb said “Dittman has improved tremendously, Cappetta could move over to give us a very athletic first baseman, and Giller could give us some strong offensive production as well”

Who’s noT: Ryan Hastings, who played first base in 2008 after spending his first three seasons at second, graduated after hitting 346 with 38 RBIs, 46 runs and 10 doubles

Who’s neW: Freshmen Josh Parr and Bill Charvat join the Illini infield in 2009 and Parr could see playing time at third base, second base or his natural shortstop position

CaTCherWho’s BaCk: Possibly Illinois’ strongest position, catcher will be manned by aaron Johnson, who hit 306 with five home runs and 29 RBIs a year ago, while throwing out 24-of-57 would-be base-stealers Junior Chris Montgomery also returns behind the dish after starting 14 games last season and hitting 281 and back-up Jake Mathis is part of the Illini catching corps as well

Top: Dominic Altobelli hit .329 with 38 RBIs in 2008.

Above left: Aaron Johnson hit .306 with five homers in 2008.

Above right: Mike Sterk pitched 31 1/3 innings in 20 appearances last season.

Right: Ben Reeser was Il-linois’ top reliever in 2008, recording five saves and pitching 35 2/3 innings.

2009 season ouTlook

Who’s noT: All of Illinois’ catchers from 2008 return this season

Who’s neW: adam Davis, the No 15 prospect in the state of Illinois in last year’s high school senior class, will compete for playing time behind the plate after finishing his high school career at Driscoll Catholic HS with a 527 average and 27 home runs, both school records Thomas shelton, who hit 450 with six homers and 46 RBIs for Brentwood (Tenn) HS, also joins the Illini squad in 2009

“We have both starting catchers back from last year and one of the top young catchers in college baseball in Adam Davis, so we should be very strong behind the plate and have different options to rest catchers or DH one of those players at some point,” Hartleb said “They’ll all be solid defensively and can all control the running game”

ouTFielDWho’s BaCk: Left fielder Casey McMurray, a 2008 Freshman All-American, leads a talented, veteran group of Illini outfielders returning for the 2009 campaign McMurray hit 331 with a team high-tying 12 doubles and 24 RBIs last season Senior nick stockwell and junior Craig lutes also return and can play any of the outfield positions Stockwell hit 299 while starting 25 games and Lutes hit 245 with a 362 on-base percentage and 30 starts Redshirt-freshman Daniel Parker also could contribute as a corner outfielder

Who’s noT: Kyle Hudson, a fourth-round selection by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft, is gone after leading the team with a 398 average, 61 runs scored, a 498 on-base percentage and

a school record-tying 40 steals in 2008

Who’s neW: Freshman Willie argo joins the Fighting Illini after one of the most storied athletic careers in Iowa high school history Argo was drafted by Arizona in the 49th round of the 2008 MLB Draft after being named an elite All-State outfielder and an All-State football player three consecutive years, placing third at both the 2007 and 2008 Iowa state wrestling meets and anchoring sprint relays that finished in the top three at the Iowa state track meet Doug schumacher also starts his career with the Illini after being named honorable mention All-State by the Chicago Tribune in 2007 and leading Brother Rice HS to a fourth-place finish at the 2007 IHSA Class AA state tournament

“In the outfield, we have good depth and a number of players with very good speed who will be very good defenders,” Hartleb said “We’re returning three outfielders who logged a lot of innings the past two seasons in McMurray, Lutes and Stockwell Bonadonna and Cappetta also can give us depth in the outfield and Argo should also be able to help us early in his career”

sTarTing PiTChersWho’s BaCk: Six of the seven pitchers who started games for Illinois in 2008 return this season, accounting for 80 percent of the starts from a season ago Most notably, seniors aaron Martin and Mike stankiewicz, junior kevin Manson and sophomore Phil haig return, with those four combining to hold down three of the four spots in the weekend rotation in 2008

Manson had a breakout sophomore season, going 8-2 in 74 2/3 innings, including a complete-game outing in Illinois’ 3-2 win over Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament Martin was extremely durable, pitching 66 innings over his 12 starts, while Stankiewicz made eight starts before moving to a long relief role later in the season Haig jumped into the rotation midway through the season, tossing

Top: Aaron Martin started 12 games last season.

2009 season ouTlook30 1/3 innings over six starts against Big Ten competition

Who’s noT: Scott Shaw, who was selected in the 13th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the New York Mets, was 4-4 with a 783 eRA and 48 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings in 2008

Who’s neW: Freshmen Bryan roberts and Corey kimes give the Illini a strong right-hander and left-hander, respectively, in this crop of rookies, and Roberts is likely to contend for a spot in the weekend rotation after a strong fall season

“We should have a lot of depth in our pitching staff this year,” Hartleb said “We return all but one pitcher from last year’s squad and they all have valuable game experience The thing I like about our staff besides their talent is that they’ve shown good leadership among themselves and I think all of our pitchers will accept the roles that are established in practice and through the early part of the season I think we’ll be much better on the mound than we’ve been the past few years”

BullPenWho’s BaCk: The entirety of Illinois’ bullpen returns from the 2008 season, led by senior Ben reeser and junior Mike sterk Reeser went 3-2 with five saves in 35 2/3 innings over 23 appearances out of the bullpen, while Sterk had three saves in 31 1/3 innings over 20 relief appearances In addition, nick Chmielewski had a strong fall after a rocky freshman campaign, and junior Billy Barrett will be back in the bullpen after finding success as a midweek starter in 2008 Sophomores Wes Braun, Blake Fairchild and lee Zerrusen also could fill valuable roles out of the bullpen

“The bullpen should be strong,” Hartleb said “We’re healthy and we have a couple of lefthanders who could fit into starting roles, or we could use them in long relief or situationally out of the bullpen We have everybody back in the bullpen from last year and they will find their roles as soon as we figure out the rotation”

Who’s noT: All of Illinois’ relievers from 2008 return this season

Who’s neW: Sophomore John anderson and freshmen Mike santa Maria and Will strack join the squad in 2009 and could see some time out of the bullpen Anderson played for the Illinois club baseball team in 2008, going 3-0 with a 117 eRA and led the National Club Baseball Association in strikeouts per nine innings Santa Maria was a first-team All-Area selection by the Daily Herald in both 2007 and 2008, while

Strack was an Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 3A/4A All-State selection as a pitcher Strack went 9-2 with a 093 eRA with 97 strikeouts in 68 innings in 2008 and threw a no-hitter against DeKalb on April 1, 2008

“I’m excited about the young arms that we have and the progress they’ve made,” Hartleb said “It’ll be a luxury this year to pick spots for them and not have to put them in unfavorable situations”

sCheDuleIllinois faces a tough schedule in 2009, beginning with the inaugural Big east/Big Ten Challenge to open the campaign The Illini will face talented Notre Dame, West virginia and Iowa squads in that event before traveling to the Al Ogletree Classic in edinburg, Texas After that tournament, Illinois visits 2008 College World Series qualifier LSU for a three-game weekend series and returns home for a four-game series with Akron on March 13-15

“Our pre-conference schedule will prepare us for the rigors of conference play,” Hartleb said “We’ll be playing very solid teams throughout the early trips, which will force us to play well in all three phases in order for us to win games”

Following an abbreviated Spring Trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla, the Illini open the Big Ten season at home against Michigan State and Indiana on consecutive weekends This year, the conference series change to three-game sets comprised entirely of nine-inning games, a move that will allow Big Ten teams to improve their RPI rankings by playing more quality non-conference opponents throughout the season

“The three-game Big Ten series will affect the way we handle the pitching staff most of all,” Hartleb said “Obviously, we’ll be in the position to move a strong arm that we would normally use as a starter into the bullpen I think you’ll see some lower-scoring games throughout the

conference and I also believe it will help us as a conference to be more competitive in the non-conference games”

The other major change for the 2009 season is that the Big Ten Tournament will be held at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio, rather than at the home of the regular season champion Huntington Park is home to the Columbus Clippers, the triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians

“The move to a neutral-site tournament is the third part of the Big Ten baseball coaches’ proposition to improve the league’s national standing and perception, along with the institution of the Big east/Big Ten Challenge and the three-game conference series,” Hartleb said “These three steps will make for a very interesting season and I think they are all very positive steps that the Big Ten schools have taken”

Above: Joe Bonadonna had a stellar 2008, earning All-Big Ten second team honors after hitting .356 with 47 runs, 34 RBIs and 26 steals.

Right: Brandon Wikoff was a second-team All-Big Ten pick after hitting .369 with 61 RBIs, 79 hits and 12 doubles in 2008.
