用語の説明

教区：教会の宣教司牧上の地域の名称です。大司教により司牧さ

れる地域は大司教区と呼んでいます。

日本に 47 ある都道府県には３つの大司教区（東京大司教区＝

東京・千葉、大阪大司教区＝大阪・兵庫・和歌山、長崎大司教区

＝長崎）と 13 の教区（札幌教区＝北海道、仙台教区＝宮城・青

森・岩手・福島、新潟教区＝新潟・秋田・山形、さいたま教区＝

埼玉・栃木・茨城・群馬、横浜教区＝神奈川・静岡・山梨・長野、

名古屋教区＝愛知・岐阜・富山・石川・福井、京都教区＝京都・

三重・滋賀・奈良、広島教区＝広島・山口・島根・鳥取・岡山、

高松教区＝愛媛・香川・徳島・高知、福岡教区＝福岡・佐賀・熊

本、大分教区＝大分・宮崎、鹿児島教区＝鹿児島、那覇教区＝沖

縄）があります。

日本の面積と人口：国土面積は『全国都道府県市区町村別面積調

（国土交通省国土地理院）』（2010年度）、人口は『住民基本台帳

人口要覧（国土地理協会）』(2010年度)より計算しました。

信徒数：信徒籍台帳に記載されている信徒の合計人数です。下記

の『聖職者・修道者・神学生数』の人数は含まれていません。

聖職者・修道者・神学生数：聖職者（司教、司祭、助祭）、修道者、

修練者、志願者、準会員、在俗会員、神学生の合計人数です。

原則として所属修道院や教区から報告していただいた人数です。

信者数：信徒数と『聖職者・修道者・神学生数』の合計人数です。

信徒率：人口に対する信徒の百分率です。

小教区：教区司教により小教区として認可された教会を指しま

す。

準小教区：小教区に属し、常設の聖堂を持っており、担当司祭に

委任されています。

巡回教会：小教区に属し、常設の聖堂を持っていて、定期的に司

祭が巡回してくる教会を指します。

集会所：聖堂はありませんが、定期的に信者が集まりミサが捧げ

られる一定の場所を指します。布教所や伝道所などと呼ばれてい

たところです。

修道院：ここでは修道会・宣教会の会員の共同体が所在している

建物を指しています。

小神学校：司祭を目指す中学生・高校生の教育機関のことです。

教区経営と修道会経営があります。

大神学校：司祭を目指す者が、神学などを学習するための教育機

関を指します。居住を主とし、教育は外部の神学部などで行って

教区司祭：教区司教を直属の長とする司祭のことをいいます。原

則的に教区内で司牧を行っています。

修道司祭：修道会に属する司祭をいいますが、ここでは宣教会に

属する司祭も含めています。原則として、属する会の長上の命令

により、各地に派遣されます。

助祭：一般に、司祭になるための教育を終え、教会への奉仕のた

めに变階された者をいいます。司教を補佐します。

修道士・修道女：清貧、貞潔、従順の誓願を立て、共同生活をして

いる者のことです。ここでは教皇庁か教区が認可した修道会に属

する修道士や修道女の合計数を記載しています。

在俗会員：世俗の中で生活し、誓願、あるいは誓約をしている者

を指します。在俗会と呼ばれる組織に属しています。

修練者その他：修道会や宣教会で誓願を行なう準備のために、そ

の修道会や宣教会に入会を認められた者を指します。

在籍信徒数：2010 年 12 月 31 日現在の各小教区の信徒籍台帳に

居所不明者：信徒籍台帳には記載されていますが、ある期間手を

洗礼：正式のカトリック信者となるための、最初に受ける入信の

秘跡です。キリストと結ばれて神の民に加わり、すべての罪がゆ

るされ水と聖霊によって新しく生まれます。

幼児洗礼：誕生から満７歳の誕生日までの子どもが受ける洗礼を

いいます。

成人洗礼：満７歳の誕生日を過ぎた者が受ける洗礼をいいます。

堅信：洗礼後に受ける秘跡です。教会との結びつきがより密接に

なり、聖霊の力によって信仰が強められます。

信者：双方がカトリック信者の結婚。

混宗：カトリック信者とカトリック以外のキリスト教信者との結婚

異宗：カトリック信者とキリスト教以外の宗教の信者・無宗教者

との結婚。

他宗：カトリック信者以外の者同士の結婚。

ミサ参加者数：主日、復活祭、クリスマスのミサに参加した者の

人数です（前日の夕方のミサや同じ日に数回ミサが行われる場合

は、その全てのミサ参加者の合計数を記載しています）。

求道者：教理または聖書を定期的に勉強している満７歳の誕生日

を過ぎた者で、受洗の可能性のある者を指します。

Diocese ： A particular local church, a fully organized

ecclesiastical jurisdiction under the pastoral direction of a

Bishop as local Ordinary.

Lay Catholics: Number of the Catholics in the Census

Register of the faithful, excluding clerics and religious.

Clergy, Religious, Seminarians: Includes Bishops, Priests,

Religious, Novices, Postulants, Members of Secular

Institutes.

Total Catholic: Comprises Lay Catholics, Clergy, Religious and

Seminarians.

% of Lay Catholics: Lay Catholics per total population,

excluding Clergy, Religious and Seminarians.

% of all Catholics: Catholics per total population.

Parishes: A certain community of Christ’s faithful stably

established within a particular church, whose pastoral care,

under the authority of the diocesan Bishop, is entrusted to a

parish priest as its proper pastor.

Quasi-Parishes: A branch church which is entrusted to a

priest as its proper pastor.

Mission Stations: An established church or chapel without a

resident priest. A parish priest makes the round of his

assigned Stations.

Assembly Center: Although a church has not been firmly

established, the faithful get together and a priest says Mass

there periodically. (Assembly places)

Religious Houses: A residence for the members of Religious or

Missionary Institutes, Congregations, Mission Orders, etc.

Minor Seminary: A formation house of middle or high school

students preparing for the priesthood.

Major Seminary: A house of study and formation for college

students preparing for the priesthood.

Other Facilities: Principally those run by Dioceses or by

Religious Institutes including Lay Facilities authorized by a

Bishop as local Ordinary.

Dormitories: excluding those belonging to schools and other

facilities.

Diocesan priest: A priest directly under the Bishop as local

Religious priest: A priest directly under the Superior of his

Religious Institute including a priest of the Missionary

Deacon: Those on whom the order of diaconate has been

formally conferred.

who pronounce public vows and live a fraternal life in

common.

Secular Institute: An Institute of consecrated life in which

Christ’s faithful, living in the world, strive for the perfection of

charity and endeavor to contribute to the sanctification of the

Novice: A man or woman preparing, in a formal period of trial

and formation, for membership in an institute of consecrated

life.

Whereabouts unknown: Catholics whose actual address is not

known although they are included in the Census.

Entries: Number entering the parish.

Departures: Number leaving the parish.

Others: Those entering or departing from Religious Institutes,

or seminaries, those newly discovered, apostates, etc.

Baptism: Baptism is the first of the sacraments. By it people

are freed from sin, born again as children of God, made like

to Christ by an indelible character, and are incorporated into

the Church.

Infant Baptism: Baptism of a minor who is just 7 years old or

younger.

Adult Baptism: After completion of the seventh year, a minor

is presumed to have the use of reason. Accordingly, Adult

Baptism include all from age 7 to moment of death.

Confirmation: By it the baptized continue in the path of

Christian initiation. They are enriched with the gift of the

Holy Spirit, and are more closely linked to the church.

Types of Marriage

Catholics: Marriage between Catholics.

Mixed Protestant: Marriage between a Catholic and a

Protestant.

Other Religions: Marriage between a Catholic and a

Non-Christian.

Non Christians: Marriage between Non-Catholics.

Mass Attendance: The total number of persons attending

Mass (on regular Sundays, Easter, Christmas).

Catechumens: Those who study the Bible and catechism

regularly, and are over seven years old.

Catechism Classes: Those of parishes, and classes held in

Catholic schools and religious houses.
