DESCRIPTION

The Westobou Festival, designed to celebrate excellence in the arts, features a variety of performances and exhibitions by local, regional, and nationally-recognized artists, primarily in the disciplines of dance, music, theater, and visual arts. Each day and evening of the 10-day festival will be filled with a variety of performances and exhibitions designed to dazzle visitors and showcase our area’s wealth of artistic talent. Whether your passion is contemporary theatrical performances or traditional symphony events, strolling through gallery exhibitions or listening to jazz, you’ll find it all – and more – at the 2010 Westobou Festival!

September 16-18, 20-25Sandra Trujillo “Churros Locos” Presented by Augusta State University Department of ArtMon-Fri 9:30am – 4:30pm, Sat 10am – 2pm, New Space Gallery, Washington Hall, Augusta State University, Free & open to public.We are very pleased to present this recently completed body of work, using indigenous clay materials from central Georgia. The exhibition of ceramic portraits and drawings reference the Spanish tradition of festival masks, specifically, Los Gigantes y Cabezudos (giant and big heads). Trujillo says, “I wanted to gain that sense of humor with ceramic sculpture.”

For the finale of their concert they will be joined by Augusta pianist Dr. Clara Park, for the performance of the Piano Quintet by Robert Schumann.

*Southern Soul & Song: Del McCoury and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band Presented by the Morris Museum of Art7:30pm –10pm | Imperial Theatre$12.50–$35, Opening the Westobou Festival, this concert combines the legendary bluegrass artist Del McCoury and his band, with the equally legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the most renowned Dixieland jazz band. This will be the first time these historically important bands have played the same bill in Augusta.

Tin Pan Alley on the Riverwalk | A banquet of beloved American songs from 1910-1940Presented by The Riverwalk Series, Inc.7pm – 8:30pm | The River Room, Saint Paul’s Church. $35, New York’s famous Tin Pan Alley comes to the Riverwalk in this concert by singer David Giardini, a dynamic lyric baritone crooner who specializes in the great American Songbook from the 1920’s and 1930’s, an era often referred to as “Tin Pan Alley.” He will be joined by pianist Paul Bisaccia, who has performed around the country and around the world.
