    1.Director'sMessageWehavehadabusyandfulfillingyearattheYorkCentreforAsianResearch.TheprojectssupportedbytheCentreandthemanylectures,seminars,researchseminarsandresearchgroups,workshopsandsymposiaattesttotheinnovativeness,qualityandrangeofAsiarelatedresearchacrossYorkUniversity.TheyalsopointtotheengagementofYorksresearcherswiththemanycriticalissuesandtransformationsfacingAsiansocietiesandAsiandiasporacommunities,pastandpresent.TheyrevealthewideinternationalresearchnetworksofYorkscholars.In2010.2011,theCentrewashometonineSSHRCfundedprojects.OurnewestprojectsrangefromastudyofrefugeelifeduringtheKoreanWar(PI:JaniceKim,History)andofspectacles,politicsandhistoriesinKorea(PI:HongKal,VisualArts)toclassformationamongstFilipinoyouthinCanada(PI:PhilipF.Kelly,Geography)andthepostconflictsituationofSikhandAhmadiyyadiasporayouthinGermanyandCanada(PI:MichaelNijhawan,Sociology).TheCentrehostedorsupportedafullprogrammeofresearchdisseminationevents,manyconnectedwithprojectsandresearchgroupsandclusters.YoucanfindmoredetailsintherestoftheAnnualReport(www.yorku.ca/ycar/Publications/Annual_Report_2011.pdf)andonourwebsite(www.yorku.ca/ycar).Here,IwillmentiontheparticularlyactivescheduleofeventsinChinastudies:aninternationalsymposiumonChineseCanadianLiteraturethatbroughttogetherChineseandCanadianresearchers,organizedbyXueqingXu(FacultyAssociate,Languages,LiteraturesandLinguistics);aninternationalworkshopinterrogating1949asananalyticaldivideinChinesehistory,organizedbyCanadaResearchChairJoshuaFogel(FacultyAssociate,History),andamajorlecturebyGailHershatter(UniversityofCaliforniaatSantaCruz)onruralwomensexperiencesandmemoriesofChinaspast.ThelecturewasassociatedwiththeCriticalChinaStudiesReadingGroup(JoanJudge,FacultyAssociate,History;JoshuaA.Fogel,History).ThePhilippineStudiesGrouphadabusyyear,beginninginSeptemberwiththe2010PhilippineStudiesLecturefeaturingJayGonzalez(UniversityofSanFrancisco),whospokeonKasamahanandBayanihan:UnderstandingFilipinoMigrantCulturalandCivicCapital.Throughouttheyear,amultidisciplinaryresearchgroupofhumanitiesandsocialsciencescholarsfromsouthernOntariouniversitiesmetatYCARtoexplorehumanrightsissuesinAsiaandAsiandiasporathroughworksofcreativeexpression,fromliteratureandpoetrytopopmusicandfilm.Planningbeganonanumberofinitiativesforthecomingacademicyear,includingforanexternallyfundedinternationalworkshopconnectedwiththeEcologiesontheEdgeResearchProgramme.OrganizedbyPeterVandergeest(FacultyAssociate,Geography)andShubhraGururani(FacultyAssociate,Anthropology),theworkshopwillexaminehowtheproliferationofecologicalknowledgeistransformingenvironmentalmanagementinwaysthatproducenew

    inequalitiesinaccesstoknowledgeanddecisionmakinginfragilemountain,coastal,grasslandandforestecologiesinAsia.AspartofourmandatetopromoteresearchinformedpublicdiscussionofkeyissuesforCanadaandAsia,theCentreheldaYorkAsianHeritageMonthlectureinMay2010featuringaprovocativelectureonAsianIdentity:BecomingCanadianbyauthorWaysonChoyandastunningdanceperformancebyOrienTik/Portraitprobingthesamethemes.WealsohostedoursecondannualAsiaLectureinSeptember2010.B.MichaelFrolic(SeniorResearchAssociate,PoliticalScience)gaveaninsightfuladdresson40YearswithChina:FromtheEstablishmentofDiplomaticRelationsin1970tothePresentDay.TheYCARresearchcommunitywasfortunateoverthelastyeartohostanumberofvisitingresearchers,whohaveenrichedthelifeofourresearchcommunity.InNovember2010,wewelcomedPadminiSwaminathan,ProfessorattheMadrasInstituteofDevelopmentStudies,IndiaandShastriIndoCanadianVisitingLecturer.ProfessorSwaminathan,aspecialistongenderanddevelopmenteconomics,gavelecturesatYorkandelsewhereinCanada.ShealsoledaworkshopforYorkandotherGTAgraduatestudentswhoseresearchinterrogatesdevelopmentanddevelopmentindicators.MarkLawrenceSantiago,aTrudeauScholarfromtheUniversityofBritishColumbia,hasbeenatYCARworkingonhisdoctoralresearchonglobalnursemigrations,inparticularfromthePhilippines.Hisworkconcernsthestateandinternationalpoliciesthatinfluencetheethicalandsustainablerecruitmentofhealthcareworkersfromthedevelopingworld.SonjaRegler,fromtheFreieUniversittBerlininGermany,isatYCARwritingupherdoctoralresearchonthepoliciesoftheChinesegovernmenttowardstheDarfurcrisisinSudanandworkingwiththeAsiaBusinessandManagementProgrammeonaprojectthatistrackingtheprogrammestraineesaftertheirreturntoChina.Thestudywillevaluatehowtheyhaveappliedtheirexperienceandnewskillsintheirworkingovernment,businessandtheeducationsectors.Duringthepastseveralmonths,theCentreadministratorsandwiderYCARcommunityhavebeenparticipatinginaconsultationprocessconcerningproposedchangestothestructureandgovernanceoforganizedresearchunitsatYork.Whiletheconsultationsareongoing,itseemslikelythattherewillbenewYorkSenatelegislationinplacesoontowhichYCARwillneedtorespondinthecomingyear.Meanwhile,overthepastyearwehavefullysettledintoournewpremisesintheYorkResearchTower.Theexpanded,manywindowedspace,withitsnewfacilities,hasbeenarealboosttoouractivities.Themeetingrooms,withtheirwallmountedcomputers,arebusy.Thereisincreasedofficeandworkspaceforfacultyprojectsandprojectstaff.Graduatestudentshavetheirownworkspaces.Thesharedcommonroomhasbecomeaspaceofencounterwithresearchersfromothercentresonthefloorandinthebuilding.ThedaytodayoperationsoftheCentrewouldbeimpossiblewithouttheeffortsofsomanypeople.Iwouldlike,onbehalfoftheentireYCARcommunity,toextendaheartfeltthankyoutoourexecutivecommitteefortheirworkonbehalfoftheCentre.Thisyear,thecommittee

    4.ResearchandTrainingProgrammesandProjectsThefollowingprogrammesandprojectswereneworongoingin2010.2011.1)BetweenMountains:RefugeeLifeduringtheKoreanWar,19481953(2010)Supportedby:SocialSciencesandHumanitiesResearchCouncilofCanadaStandardGrant;KoreaFoundationFieldResearchFellowship(2010),YorkUniversityFacultyofLiberalArtsandProfessionalStudiesMeritAward(2009.2010)andaSocialScienceandHumanitiesResearchCouncil(SSHRC)SmallGrant(2010).PrincipalInvestigator:JaniceKim(FacultyAssociate;History,YorkUniversity).BetweenMountains:RefugeeLifeduringtheKoreanWar,19481953isthefirstsystematichistoryofrefugeesandcivilianlivelihoodduringthewarpublishedinanylanguage.TherehavebeennumerouspoliticizedandpoliticalhistoriesoftheconflictthatiscalledtheKoreanWar(19501953)outsideofthepeninsula,theJune25thWar(yugiochnjaeng)intheRepublicofKorea(ROK),andtheFatherlandLiberationWar(chogukhaebangchnjaeng)intheDemocraticPeoplesRepublicofKorea(DPRK).Incontrast,scholarshiponthecivilianandsocialhistoryofthewarhasbeencomparativelysparseinbothEnglishandKorean.Thedearthofinformationonnoncombatants,however,didnotmeanthattherewaslittleactivityamongordinarypeople.InSouthKoreaalone,overfivemillionpeoplefledviolenceinthefirstyearoftheconflict,andtwoyearsintothewar,roughlyhalfofthepopulation,10millionpeople,wereidentifiedaswarsufferers.Therefore,thisprojectexploresthehistoryofrefugees,definedbroadlyasthosewhocrossedthethirtyeighthparallelseparatingNorthandSouthKorea,warsufferers,andtheinternallydisplaced.AlthoughthewarsgeneraleffectsonNorthKoreawillbeexamined,duetothelackofaccesstothemajorityofNorthKoreansources,ProfessorJaniceKim(PrincipalInvestigator)focusesonthehistoryofrefugeelifeinSouthKorea.Theprojectwillassessthedetailsofandchangesinthenumbersofrefugees,theirroutesofpassage,theirmethodsofsurvival,andinstitutionalassistanceforwarsufferers.Shewillalsoinvestigatehowfratricidalwarfareinfluencedthecreationofwelfaremechanismsand,byextension,differingvisionsofcivilsocietyinthetwoKoreas.Inthefirstyearoftheproject,ProfessorKimspentthreemonthsinKoreaandseveralweeksintheUnitedStates(attheUnitedNationsArchivesinNewYork,UnitedStatesNationalArchivesinWashingtonD.C.),metwithunofficialcollaboratorsaffiliatedwiththeNationalHistoryCompilationCommittee(RepublicofKorea)inSeoulandOttawa,andconductedinterviewsinSeoul,KjeIsland,Pusan,LosAngelesandSanDiego.HerresearchassistanthasbeentranslatingnewspaperheadlinespertainingtoKoreanWarrefugeesaswellasimportanttestimonialdocuments.

    ThefailureofCanadianlabourmarketsandinstitutionstorecognizethetraining,educationandprofessionalexperienceofimmigrantsisawidelyacknowledgedproblem.Ofgrowingconcern,however,aretheeducationalandemploymentoutcomesofthesecondand1.5generations(thoseborninCanadatoimmigrantparents,andthosewhoimmigratedduringchildhood).Formanyimmigrantgroups,evidencesuggeststhatthesecondgenerationenjoysupwardmobility,achievinghighlevelsofeducationandfindingwellpaidjobs.FilipinoimmigrantsarriveinCanadawithoneofthehighestpercentagesofuniversityleveleducationamongallrecentimmigrantgroups,andyetthechildrenofFilipinoimmigrantshaveoneofthelowestratesofuniversitygraduation.ItwouldseemthatapatternisemergingofFilipinoCanadianyouthreproducingthesubordinatelabourmarketpositionsintowhichtheirparentswereincorporateduponarrival.Theobjectiveofthisprojectistoexaminetherootsoftheseintergenerationaloutcomesandthisresearchshouldhelpusunderstandhowethnicidentityisimplicatedineconomicopportunities,howparentalemploymentisreproducedinthelifechancesoftheirchildren,andhowdifferentimmigrantsettlementsitesshapethenextgenerationinimportantways.InadditionaltoquantitativeanalysisofStatisticsCanadadata,theresearchconductedbyProfessorPhilipF.Kellyandhisresearchteamwillbebasedonqualitativeinterviewswithkey

    In2011,ProfessorVandergeestandShubhraGururani(FacultyAssociate,Anthropology)receivedfundingforanAsiafocusedworkshopthatwillbecohostedbyYCARandIRIS.ChangingFrontiersofEcologicalKnowledges:ACriticalDialogueofAsianEcologiesontheEdgewillexplorechangingpracticesanddiscoursesofenvironmentalknowledgesandgovernance,bothlocallyandglobally.Asiaisasignificantsitefortheseecologicalandsocialtransformations,aplacewherewecanunderstandchangingformsofecologicalknowledgeandenvironmentalmanagementindiverse,globallyimportant,andfragileecologies.     InDecember2010,researcherMd.SaidulIslamconductedafollowupfieldtriptoBangladesh.AfterthefallofShrimpSealofQuality(SSOQ),theWorldFishCentreandafewotherorganizationsareplayingsubstantialrolesinshapingBangladeshshrimpaquaculture.ProfessorIslamneededtomapoutthesekeystakeholdersandhowortowhatextenttheyareshapingtheindustry.Hemetwithseveraldifferentgroupsincluding:officialsoftheWorldFishCentre;aresearchgroupwithsimilarinterestsatNorthernUniversityofBangladesh(NUB);andgovernmentofficialsattheDepartmentofFisheries.Thelatterprovidedanupdateontheindustry,particularlyonhowitisdealingwiththebannednitrofuran(aharmfuldrugthatwasfoundinsomeshipmentsanddrasticallycurtailedtheexportearnings),naturaldisasters(climatechangeissues)aswellasothersocialandenvironmentalqualityissues.Inthepastyear,PaulFoleypresentedtwoconferencepapersandgaveapublictalkbasedonresearchsupportedbytheproject.HecontinueshisdoctoralfieldworkinAtlanticCanadaonecocertificationandlabellingthroughthecaseofCanadianfisheries.
