It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Hong Kong Golf Association on organising the UBS Hong Kong Open Championship 2011.

As one of the first major sports events to receive the M mark endorsement, the UBS Hong Kong Open has since set itself apart as a benchmark against which success is measured. Widely recognised as a premier golfing event in the region, it has not only raised the profile of M mark scheme, but also reinforced Hong Kongs status as the event capital of Asia.

A prestigious event on our sports calendar, the Hong Kong Open attracts golf enthusiasts from near and far to watch their favourite professional golfers conquer one of the best courses in Asia. Awarding M mark status to this tournament is our way of recognising its international significance, and its contributions to the rising popularity of golf in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Golf Association has my sincere gratitude for all the efforts it put into making this event truly remarkable and I have no doubt it will continue to feature prominently in our sporting calendar going forward.

I wish all participants the very best of luck and a memorable stay in Hong Kong.

    Welcome Message

On behalf of UBS it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Hong Kong Golf Club for the 2011 UBS Hong Kong Open.

Throughout our long partnership with the tournament, UBS has sought to ensure that the Open, Hong Kongs oldest sporting event, continues to go from strength to strength.

Today, the Open offers: a prize purse of US$ 2.75 million; outstanding media exposure, particularly in its television profile in Asia and globally; and attracts stronger fields each year.

I am confident that the support this year of the Hong Kong Governments Mega Events Fund, will pay immediate dividends in further raising the profile of the Hong Kong Open on the global stage.

This year, we welcome the return of defending champion, Ian Poulter, who joins a coterie of European Tour stars including Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Matteo Manassero and former champions, Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Angel Jimnez.

Fanling will once again be a proving ground for some of the top players in Asia and with the participation of stars like YE Yang and Liang Wen-chong contributing to the mix, few would disagree that the Hong Kong Open has assembled its most impressive field to date.

As ever, on-course action will be complemented by the UBS Family Fun Zone and the hospitality available to guests at the UBS marquee.

UBS is extremely proud of its association with the Hong Kong Open. However, this is the final year of our sponsorship. I am confident that the fruits of our seven-year partnership with the European and Asian Tours, the Hong Kong Golf Association and the Hong Kong Golf Club will be readily apparent over the coming days.

We wish the Tours and the Hong Kong Golf Association success for the Hong Kong Open in the years to come.

I hope that all of you enjoy the UBS Hong Kong Open 2011.

    Welcome Message

On behalf of the Hong Kong Golf Association, I am proud to welcome you to the 2011 UBS Hong Kong Open, an event that has grown enormously in stature since its inaugural staging in 1959.

The Championship is Hong Kong's oldest professional sporting event and the HKGA is honoured to be associated with such a historical and tradition rich tournament.

Indeed, we are extremely grateful for the support of UBS, whose commitment to the Championship since 2005

has elevated the tournament's status immeasurably, and look forward to witnessing golf of the highest calibre over the next four days.

This year marks the first time the Government's Mega Event Fund has supported our showpiece event and with their backing we have been able to secure an incredibly strong field, arguably the most impressive of any Hong Kong Open in the past five decades.

Local junior golf has long been a key focus for the HKGA and we are blessed with an increasing number of talented youngsters, many of whom are making a name for themselves on the regional amateur stage and who all dream of one day participating in this fantastic Championship.

I would like to thank the Captain and Committee of the Hong Kong Golf Club and its members for once again hosting the Open and my utter most thanks also to the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time each year to assist in the running of the tournament and who help make it such success for competitors and spectators.

I hope that as many of you as possible will have the opportunity to come out to support the event, and to see what I am sure will be a fantastic performance by the eventual worthy champion!

To all those involved in the UBS Hong Kong Open I wish you every success.

    Welcome Message

It is with great pleasure that I, on behalf of the Hong Kong Golf Club, welcome all of you to the 53rd Hong Kong Open. We are very proud of the rich traditions and history surrounding the Open and have found it most satisfying to see the event grow in stature over the years to become one of the premier sporting events in Hong Kong.

I would like to thank our title sponsor, UBS, for their support and commitment to this prestigious event. Once again, their effort has yielded a stellar field of some of the most talented golfers competing this year.

I am also grateful to the European Tour's continued involvement. Their knowledge and expertise in organizing large scale world-class events has been instrumental in making this one of the most enjoyable events for both the players and the spectators.

Last but not least, I would like to extend my gratitude to all those involved in the preparation and running of the Hong Kong Open. My special thanks go to our course management team and staff for their efforts in setting up our golf course for the tournament.

Finally, I am certain we will once again witness some spectacular golf on the fairways and greens of the Hong Kong Golf Club this year. I wish everyone an enjoyable and memorable experience at this year's tournament.

    Welcome Message

Hong Kong is one of the most exciting and vibrant cities in the world and it is a pleasure to return to the UBS Hong Kong Open for the 53rd edition of the event, and 11th since it became part of The European Tour International Schedule.

In contrast with the citys modern technology, skyscrapers and dazzling skyline, the Hong Kong Golf Club is one of the oldest clubs in Asia and is steeped in history and golfing tradition.

It will no doubt once again prove a thrilling test for the world-class field, which contains defending champion Ian Poulter, who shot a stunning round of 60 in the second round last year en route to his 10th European Tour victory.

Adding to the excitement again this year is the fact that the UBS Hong Kong Open is the last counting event before the season reaches its climax, and the players will be vying to cement their place in the top 60 in The Race to Dubai who will be going to the Dubai World Championship.

We must give thanks for the support we receive from our partners, title sponsors UBS and the Asian Tour, in the staging of this outstanding event. Golf in Asia continues to grow at a phenomenal rate, and our partnership with the Asian Tour is as strong as ever.

Thanks also go to the Hong Kong Government and the Mega Events Fund in particular as well as the Hong Kong Golf Association and all other sponsors.

Last but by no means least, our appreciation goes to the members, officials and staff of the Hong Kong Golf Club for their generosity in allowing us use of their superb facilities.

Steeped in history and heritage, the championship represents the regions growing stature in world golf and reflects the strength of the Asian Tour.

This week, we welcome another stellar field of champions from

both the Asian Tour and our partners The European Tour, promising yet another memorable edition of the championship.

It is only through sponsorship that our talented players are able to showcase their extraordinary skills and on their behalf, I extend our fullest appreciation to UBS, whose passion for excellence has been outstanding.

Since becoming title sponsor of the Hong Kong Open in 2005, UBS has sought to raise the tournaments profile both locally and internationally.

For 53 years the tournament has brought elite golf to one of the worlds most dynamic cities and, in a part of the world where golfs relative lack of history is counterbalanced by its recent

exponential growth in popularity, the tradition and heritage of the Open the longest-running professional sporting event in Hong Kong is unparalleled.

Widely acknowledged as a special event on the international golf calendar by players and spectators alike, the UBS Hong Kong Open is, along with the US Masters at Augusta National,

one of just a handful of tournaments of such long history to have been played continuously at a single venue.

First played in 1959, the UBS Hong Kong Open has amassed a roster of champions the caliber of which is unmatched by other tournaments in the region. Nine players have won both a Major championship and the Hong Kong title, a unique achievement for the regions third-oldest national Open.

Dual Open champion Greg Norman is a multiple winner (1979 and 1983), while Major winners including Ian Woosnam (1987), Bernard Langer (1991), Tom Watson (1992), Jose Maria Olazbal (2001) and Padraig Harrington (2003) have all had their names inscribed on the Hong Kong

Open trophy. European heavyweights, Miguel Angel Jimnez and Colin Montgomerie, have also added their stamp to the event with victories in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Indeed, in 2007, the ever-popular Jimnez won his second Hong Kong title.

From the outset, UBS has approached its sponsorship with the intention to not only safeguard, but to cultivate and grow the tradition of the UBS Hong Kong Open.

To mark the tournaments 50th edition in 2008, UBS arranged for nine former champions to return to Fanling. Headlined by three-time Open champion Peter Thomson, previous winners making up the field that year included Langer, Olazabal,

The 2011 Hong Kong Open is the seventh year of UBSs sponsorship and is also the seventh consecutive year that has been marked by an increase in the tournaments prize fund. Over the course of its sponsorship, UBS has overseen an increase in the prize money from US$800,000 to the US$2.75 million purse on offer this week.

This year, UBS is welcoming back another parade of former champions with defending champion Ian Poulter joined by Harrington, Olazabal, Jimnez, Montgomerie and Gregory Bourdy.

    The former champions round out

what is shaping up to be the most competitive field ever assembled for the UBS Hong Kong Open.

UBS is extremely excited about the stellar field participating in the UBS Hong Kong Open 2011. With so many top-ranked stars from the three major Tours, spectators at Fanling and those watching on TV worldwide should be in for another of the dramatic finishes that have become a staple of the UBS Hong Kong Open. We are proud of the role that we have played in developing the tournament and are once again excited to share this special event with the people of Hong Kong and golf fans throughout Asia, said Kathryn Shih, CEO, Wealth Management, Asia Pacific, for UBS.

This week, eight of the worlds Top 50 players will be queuing up for a shot at the Hong Kong title with stars like defending US Open champion Rory McIlroy, the UKs Ian Poulter, Italys Matteo Manassero and Koreas YE Yang joining the field alongside the former Hong Kong winners and international golf legends such as dual Major winner John Daly.

UBS has also played a pivotal role behind the scenes by creating off-course experiences for the spectators. In keeping with its commitment to reinvesting in the communities in which it operates, UBS has focused on sharing the spirit of the game and the tournament with the wider community.

Each year at the UBS Hong Kong Open, UBS invites dozens of children from a variety of educational and sports programmes to golf clinics with leading professional players. This year is no exception as UBS renews its long-standing association with its community partners like the Hong Kong Special Olympics.

These customized programmes aim to develop a passion and enthusiasm for golf from a young age.

This year, select local golfers and top Chinese star, Liang Wen-chong, will help run the programmes on-site. It is hoped that the programmes will not only help inspire a passion for golf among Hong Kong youth but will also contribute to the continued development of the game and Hong Kongs young players over the long-term.

UBS looks forward to the day when a Hong Kong champion rises to the top spot at the UBS Hong Kong Open. Our community-based programmes are designed to develop a love for the game and a respect for the traditions and etiquette of golf while

also helping to raise the profile of this prestigious sporting event in the local community, added Ms Shih.

For Hong Kongs amateur enthusiasts, UBS has introduced a Family Fun Zone which offers spectators the chance to refine their game through a variety of specialized golf clinics conducted on-site throughout the tournament by Hong Kong Golf Club and HKPGA pros.

Over the years the tournaments growing stature and off-course activities have been recognised by the public who have voted with their feet to make the UBS Hong Kong Open one of Hong Kongs best attended annual sporting events.

Since 2005, the galleries have grown more than 45% with the tournament annually attracting crowds in excess of 30,000 spectators, up from just 20,000 in 2004. Indeed, the 50th anniversary of the UBS Hong Kong Open in 2008 drew a record attendance of 35,000.

Whether measured by the strength of the field, the international exposure generated for Hong Kong, or the cheers resounding through the galleries, the steadfast support of UBS has the Hong Kong Open poised to mark its second half-century with a growth and tradition to rival its historic first 50 years.

Last year's UBS Hong Kong Open was highlighted not only by Ian Poulter's terrific performance in holding off a world-class field to win the title, but also by the play of Hong Kong's Shinichi Mizuno, the 16-year-old amateur who was making his debut in the historic championship.

Mizuno, who had made it through the

rigours of the qualifying tournament to

earn his spot at Fanling, carded solid

rounds of 73 and 70. And although

those scores meant he narrowly missed

out on making the weekend action, it

was yet another example of how much

the standard of Hong Kong amateur

golf has improved in recent years.

Amateurs making headlines at the UBS

Hong Kong Open has been one of the

    tournament's recurring themes. At the

2008 edition, Tsim Sha Tsui-born Jason

Hak became the youngest player in the

history of the European Tour to make

the cut when he achieved the feat at

the tender age of 14. And just to prove

    to everyone that that performance

wasn't a one off, Hak went out and

did exactly the same thing a year later,

his second-round 67 thrilling the large

galleries at the Hong Kong Golf Club.

Mizuno will be hoping he can

    match the accomplishments of his

    international teammate when he tees

it up once again this week, his win at the Montrose Fine Wines Hong Kong Close Amateur Championship earlier this year gaining him automatic entry into the elite field.

"I think my expectations have changed slightly from last year," said the now 17-year-old Mizuno, who attends West Island School. This year my goal is to definitely make the cut and I really want to be the lowest amateur. My game has improved greatly in the last 12 months as well and I am anxious to see how I will perform at this high a level.

"Last year I was a little overwhelmed seeing people like Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell on the practice putting green at the same time as me. But once the golf started I was OK and one of the highlights of the week for me was playing alongside Anthony Kang when he shot 61 in the second round."

Mizuno, who will be joined at Fanling by fellow amateurs Ron Totton who made it through the qualifying tournament at the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau in October and Hong Kong Amateur Open champion Huang Yongle of China, has enjoyed a superb season.

After his breakthrough win over the Lunar New Year holiday, the Nagoya-born Mizuno, who only took up golf five years ago, claimed

the Hong Kong Junior Close title and performed admirably for Hong Kong at the Asia Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship (the Nomura Cup) in Fiji.

But it was at the 51st Putra Cup in September, which Hong Kong hosted for the first time since 2002, where Mizuno really excelled.

Held at the scenic Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club, Mizuno spearheaded a brilliant local challenge for the Southeast Asia Amateur team title, which Hong Kong had not won since the inaugural staging of the tournament in 1961. Firing a superb 68 in the final round, Mizuno finished in second place in the individual standings, a position matched by his team in the main event, which

saw Hong Kong also represented by Hak, Liu Lok-tin and Terrence Ng narrowly lose out to Singapore.

That experience, says National Coach Brad Schadewitz who oversees the Hong Kong Golf Association's successful junior development programme, will stand Mizuno in good stead.

"Over the last year he has a lot more experience playing bigger events and is now more used to being in a host of pressure situations," said Schadewitz. "The more times you are in those situations the easier it is. Right now though, Shinichi is balancing his golf with his studies and being a full-time student. But he has a pure golf swing and certainly has enough game to be competitive. This should be another great experience for him."

Terrence Ng (left) and Jason Hak (right) joined Mizuno and Liu Lok-tin in the internaitonal side that finished second at the Putra Cup, which was Hong Kong's best team showing in a generation

    ending tournament from December

    15-18 with major champions Rory

    McIlroy and Darren Clarke, along

    with Westwood and Japans Ryo

    Ishikawa headlining the event at

    Amata Spring Country Club.

    The season-opening event, the Avantha

Masters, launched a magical run of

    three successive tournaments in India

where local hero SSP Chowrasia made

the most of playing on home soil by

lifting his second Asian Tour title.

The SAIL Open proved to be watershed

    for Thai talent Kiradech Aphibarnrat,

Asias very own grip it-and-rip it star.

    After several heart-breaking near

misses in the past two years, the former

world junior champion finally laid his

hands on a first Asian Tour victory.

I learned a lot on the Asian

Tour and to be able to win is

    tremendous, said Kiradech.

Like the Thai star, Lahiri also fulfilled

    his immense potential and believes

that Asias young guns would go on

to enjoy new peaks in their careers.

Ive been a professional golfer for

several years and it was a matter of

learning and gaining experience. I was

finding my way around and learning

how to handle everything else outside

the golf course. Once I got a grasp of

that, I was concentrating on playing

    my best, said the 23-year-old.

    The US$750,000 Indonesian Masters

was also the centre of attention in

world golf in April as the tournaments

    top attraction Westwood claimed

an emphatic victory which helped him regain the world number one ranking, albeit briefly.

The Indonesian Masters has been very successful. It has a fantastic

    golf course in brilliant condition

and we had a good field. No

complaints at all and Im sure the

field will only get stronger in the

    years to come, said Westwood.

The Asian Tour also welcomed the

return of the popular ICTSI Philippine

Open on the Schedule after a two-

year hiatus. The event was won by

    American rookie Berry Henson.

    In July, another Qualifying School

    graduate Joonas Granberg became

only the second Finnish player to win

on the Asian Tour when he triumphed

    at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor

Masters on a week where he shot

    a course record 10-under-par 62.

    Indias Himmat Rai broke through

for his first win at the ISPS Handa

    Singapore Classic after a five-way

    play-off, Australian David Gleeson

sparkled with a wonderful victory at

the Hero Indian Open while Chinese

Taipeis Chan Yih-shih rolled the right

numbers to win the Macau Open

    presented by Cityneon, which returned

to the Schedule after a one-year gap.

    Chinese Taipeis Lu Wei-chih was

Octobers man as he secured a

    memorable home double by winning

    the Yeangder Tournament Players

    Championship and Mercuries Taiwan

Masters. He became the first player

    with multiple wins in 2011.

Outside the ropes, coverage of the

    Asian Tour on television increased

by many folds that it now reaches

over 200 countries and 850 million

    households around the world while

Rolex and Starwood Hotel and Resorts

    signed up as Official Timekeeper

and Official Hotel and Resorts of the

    Asian Tour respectively, signalling the

    continued backing of Corporate Asia.

    The Asian Tours television footprint

was also greatly enhanced with new

    broadcasting agreements announced

with the Golf Channel in North

    America, Latin America and Japan.

SSP Chowrasia's win at the Avantha Masters at Delhi Golf Club rocketed the Indian player to the top of the Asian Tour standings for much of the season

Rory McIlroy returns to the UBS Hong Kong Open a freshly minted major winner and with a certain score to settle.

The Northern Irishman has in the 12 months since he last graced these shores made good on his staggering potential, separating himself from the field at the US Open in June to win by eight strokes (setting a new scoring record along the way) and firmly establishing himself at the very top of the sport.

And so the 22-year-old returns to the Hong Kong Golf Club a course he has enjoyed since his junior days in a city he says he dearly loves.

Three years ago McIlroy played his part in one of the most dramatic play-offs seen anywhere in recent times when he finished runner-up to Taiwans Lin Wen-tang. He came close again the following year, notching his second successive second place at the event behind an on-song Grgory Bourdy. Twelve months ago, McIlroy had a chance of glory once again thanks to a blistering start before eventually finishing sixth behind Ian Poulter.

This year, McIlroy returns on a hot streak of form that saw him finish in the top three at four events around the world before heading into China and taking out Octobers Shanghai Masters in a play-off against Anthony Kim. He followed that up with a tie for fourth at the WGC Champions tournament, which elevated him to number two in the rankings a career high for McIlroy and a great confidence boost before the action heads to Hong Kong this week.

    Justin Rose England

Theres a saying in the world of sport that talent will always win out.Justin Rose is a case in point.

The South African-born, English-raised golfer exploded on to the scene when, as a 17-year-old amateur, he birdied the last hole at the 1998 Open Championship to tie for fourth. The pro ranks beckoned immediately yet Rose struggled in those early days. But time and that talent has shown that those early hardships were not going to characterise his career. Far from it.

In the past two seasons, the now-31-year-old Rose has won three times on the PGA Tour and he comes this week to Fanling for his UBS Hong Kong Open debut as one of the most consistent players in world golf. Overall, Rose has 10 professional titles to his name, and hell be looking to add to the four victories he has had on the European Tour, the last of those coming in the 2007 Volvo Masters.

At the BMW Championship in Chicago in September, Rose led the field from start to finish, an opening-day 63 setting the standard he kept up all event to ensure a two-stroke victory. Rose showed at the recent WGC Champions tournament in Shanghai that hes in solid form at the business end of the 2011 season, finishing with a solid top 10 thanks to a scintillating final round of 66.

    Ian Poulter England

Ian Poulter arrived at Fanling last year with his game face on and he left town with the UBS Hong Kong Open trophy in his grasp.

Along the way, the Englishman flirted with an historic 59 never before achieved on the European Tour before ending the second day out in front thanks to a scintillating 10-under-par 60. And from that moment on the tournament was Poulters for the taking.

Come the final day and Poulter held his nerve superbly as the likes of Simon Dyson and Matteo Manassero made their moves. With his one-stroke victory, the Englishman added the title to an honour roll that now totals 14 tournaments since he turned pro 17 years ago.

It was another triumph for Poulters style shown in the often-dazzling colours he wears and for the substance found in his game. And the 12 months since that victory have seen the 35-year-old continue to show the kind of form that has seen him consistently rated as among the worlds best players.

From Hong Kong, Poulter lost in a play-off at the season-ending Dubai World Championship but still secured a career-high fourth in The Race to Dubai, while ending the year ranked eighth in the world. In May of this year Poulter added the World Match Play title to the WGC Match Play he won last year becoming the first-ever player to win both events, held on opposites sides of the Atlantic.

    Miguel Angel Jimnez Spain

Miguel Angel Jimnez has a habit of making people notice what hes up to out on the course. And nowhere more is that the case than here in Hong Kong, where the charismatic, cigar-chomping Spaniard has long delighted his Fanling fans, claiming the title in both 2004 and 2007.

The man from Malaga has collected 21 professional victories through almost three decades of plying his trade on the fairways of the world and his carefree manner has made him a fan favourite wherever he plays.

Out on the course, though, Jimnez is a fierce competitor as shown last season where he collected three titles holding off Lee Westwood in a play-off to win the Dubai Desert Classic, doing the same against Alejandro Caizares and Francesco Molinari at the Open de France and kicking clear of the field by three strokes at the European Open.

Although he has yet to enter the winner's circle in 2011, Jimnez's game is in fine fettle, a fact highlighted by three runner-up finishes most recently at October's Andaluca Masters and the evergreen 47-year-old is riding high in the Race to Dubai standings.

Jimenez has two near misses in majors he finished tied for second at the US Open in 2000 and tied for third at the Open Championship in 2001 and has represented Europe in four Ryder Cups.

    Francesco Molinari FItaly

The younger of Italys Molinari brothers has found the UBS Hong Kong Open a happy hunting ground over the years and was part of a play-off for the title that has become the stuff of legend in these parts.

In 2008, Molinari was left tied with Rory McIlroy and Lin Wen-tang at the end of regulation play and watched on with awe as the Taiwanese golfer recovered with a wonder shot from the woods on his way to taking the crown. A joint third-place finish behind Grgory Bourdy in 2009 further fuelled Molinaris love affair with the Fanling fairways and the 28-year-old has gone from strength to strength since then.

Molinaris breakout season came in 2010 with victory in the WGC Champions and a tied-sixth at the Dubai World Championship, which ensured a career-best fifth in The Race to Dubai. Overall he logged in 11 top-10 finishes for the year to mark himself as one of the most exciting prospects in the game today.

And then there was the little matter of the Ryder Cup. Molinari partnered with brother Edoardo as the Europeans down the Americans 14 to 13 for an historic victory at Celtic Manor in 2010. The brothers certainly seem to bring out the best in other they paired to win the Omega Mission Hills World Cup for Italy in 2009 and will back in action at that event before making the trip back to Hong Kong this year.

    Yang Yong-eun South Korea

History will never forget Yang Yong-eun nor his exploits at the 2009 US PGA Championship at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. It was there that Yang became the first-ever Asian to win one of golfs majors and he did it in quite stunning fashion too, coming from two strokes behind none other than Tiger Woods on the final day to eventually take the tournament by three.

It was a stunning achievement, one made all the more remarkable by the fact that Yang only really picked up the game at age 19.

From working as a caddie in his homeland to learning his trade on the fairways of New Zealand, now at the age of 39 and with a further 10 professional titles to go with that first major Yang has firmly established himself among the worlds leading players.

The Jeju-born Yang was in the thick of the major action again this year, finishing third at the US Open behind Rory McIlroy, a man he will be competing against again in Hong Kong this week. The one-time construction worker has enjoyed plenty of success at European Tour events in China, having claied the Champions tournament in 2006 and the China Open in 2010.

This will be Yang's third visit to the UBS Hong Kong Open, where his best result was an equal 19th last year.

    Alvaro Quiros Spain

Hong Kong golf fans will be in for a treat when Alvaro Quiros pulls out his big guns this week the 28-year-old Spaniard has for the past three years led the European Tour for average driving distance and if the ball is there to be hit, he wont waste a single moment of time deciding what to do.

Quiros, who has averaged 312 yards off the tee this season, grew up in a village just outside the gates of the famed Valderrama Golf Club on Spains Costa del Sol, so the game was almost fated to be his calling. After a stellar junior career in his homeland, Quiros broke through with a stunning victory as a 24-year-old in the 2007 Alfred Dunhill Championship his very first event as an official European Tour card-holder. The Spaniard has now won five events on the European Tour (and seven in total since turning pro in 2004) and in 2010 became only the seventh Spaniard since 1972 to claim the Open de Espaa.

In 2011, Quiros fine form has continued and he captured the worlds attention at the start of the year by taking out a one-stroke victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, memorably dropping a final-round hole-in-one on his way to lifting the trophy. Hes remained in the top-10 in the Race To Dubai for much of the year and will no doubt be looking to lift his ranking yet further after his week in Hong Kong.

If the weight of expectation has any bearing at all on Matteo Manassero, the 18-year-old sensation is doing a masterful job of hiding it. Up until now in the Italians short but supremely successful career he has simply gone about his business as though he has not a care in the world.

And why should he? Since joining the professional ranks in May of last year Manassero has collected two titles, becoming the youngest-ever player to win on the European Tour when he triumphed at the Castello Masters last October and following that up with victory at the Malaysian Open this past April.

Here in Hong Kong the golfing fraternity and the Italians growing legion of fans know first-hand what all the excitement is about. As a 17-year-old, Manassero arrived for the UBS Hong Kong Open last year still buzzing from that first victory of his and he set about pushing eventual winner Ian Poulter all the way to finish before ending the final days play tied for second with Simon Dyson.

The Verona-born phenomenon had put the writing on the wall in his short time as an amateur, in 2009 becoming the youngest-ever winner of the British Amateur Championship and using that win to gain entry into the Open Championship, where his 13th-place finish made him the tournaments leading amateur.

    Edoardo Molinari EItaly

Back in Italy, the golf community had long known about the talents of Edoardo Molinari but it wasnt until the US Amateur Championship in 2005 that the rest of the world really latched on to what all the fuss was about. The then-24-year-old from Turin arrived in the United States and achieved a victory in that event that had escaped any player from Europe for 95 years and any Italian ever and saw his name go up on the champions board alongside the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Since turning pro, the 30-year-old Molinari, one of the best putters in the game, has picked up two wins on the European Tour both coming in 2010 at the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond and at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, which helped secure him a wildcard pick from Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie. Another highlight that year was a second-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on the PGA Tour.

Two of Molinaris greatest achievements in the game have come through the games most prestigious team competitions. In 2009 paired with younger brother Francesco he holed the winning putt that captured the coveted Omega Mission Hills World Cup title for his country for the first time.

A year later, Molinari, a former winner of the Challenge Tour's Order of Merit, fully justified his Ryder Cup selection, earning a crucial half point against the in-form Rickie Fowler in the final-day singles.

    Padraig Harrington Ireland

It always seemed destined that Padraig Harrington would one day establish himself among the greats of the game of golf. By the Irishmans own re-telling, he first picked up a golf club when he was just four years old, back in his hometown of Ballyroan, and from that moment on there was never much doubt about where his passions lay.

Through a stellar amateur career which included a victory in the Walker Cup for the Great Britain & Ireland team in 1995 and on to the pro ranks from 1995, Harrington has delighted galleries across the globe with his talent.

And those moments of greatness have come, too, beginning when Harrington captured the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 2007, seeing off Sergio Garcia by one stroke in a play-off. 2008 proved to be a sensational season for the affable Dubliner: successfully defending his Open crown at Royal Birkdale, Harrington became the first player since Tiger Woods to capture back-to-back majors when he held off Garcia once again to lift the US PGA Championship just three weeks later.

In all, the 40-year-old Irishman has collected 40 titles now including a one-stroke victory here in Hong Kong back in 2003. And he has established himself along the way also as one of the game's great team players, being a regular on the European Ryder Cup teams now since 1999.

    Juvic Pagunsan Philippines

Juvic Pagunsans second-place finish at the Singapore Open in November was a timely reminder of the Asian Tour regulars abundant talent.

The 33-year-old collected US$666,660 for that effort the largest cheque ever picked up by a Filipino golfer and it was enough to take Pagunsan to the top of the Asian Tours Order of Merit with three tournament's left on the 2011 calendar.

Pagunsan comes to the UBS Hong Kong Open the Asian Tours penultimate event still with that honour within his grasp and hell be buoyed by the memory of his sensational play at the 2006 edition of the championship, when he pushed Spains Jose Manuel Lara all the way on the final day before going down to the Spaniard by just one stroke.

The Filipino was named the Asian Tours Rookie of the Year in 2006 and the next season broke through for his first win in the pro ranks, recording a stunning birdie-eagle finish to claim the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational. In all, Pangunsan had nine top-10 finishes in his first two years on tour.

The former caddie from Bacolod was a sensation during his amateur days too in 2005 he picked up national titles in the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia before claiming two gold medals at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in Manila. Pagunsan was first introduced to the game by his father Juanito, also a professional golfer.

Liang Wen-chong has certainly taken some fond memories away with him from his previous visits to Hong Kong. And then theres the little matter of the hole-in-one during the final round back in 2006 that saw Chinas number one collect a one-kilogram gold bar, courtesy of UBS.

The 33-year-old Zhongshan native has become the standard-bearer for Chinese golf and in the past decade has claimed an impressive 17 professional wins. In 2007, Liang became the first player from that country to win the Asian Tours Order of Merit, thanks to his victory in the Singapore Masters and an impressive eight other top-10 finishes.

Liang has been taking his game to the world too, being the first Chinese player to contest the US PGA Championship (2007) and The Open Championship (2008) and receiving a special invite to play in the 2008 Masters Tournament at Augusta. Just how much Liangs game and maturity as a player have developed was highlighted at last years US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits where he blazed a new course-record eight-under 64 in the third round on his was to an equal-eighth finish.

Local galleries know just what Liangs game is all about he led the Hong Kong Open to the halfway point back in 2009 and has long been a favourite at Fanling, a course he describes as his second home

Eight-time European Tour Order of Merit champion Colin Montgomerie, one of the true legends of British golf, returns to Hong Kong in search of his first tour title since 2007.

Monty as he is known to his legions of fans around the world has fond memories of Fanling. Since first playing the course as a member of Scotland's Eisenhower Trophy team in 1984, the 48-year-old has been a regular visitor to the UBS Hong Kong Open, the highlight of his travels being his victory in 2005, which came following James Kingston's dramatic final-hole meltdown.

At his peak, Montgomerie was arguably the greatest driver of a golf ball in the game. Reaching a career-high of number two in the world, the Scot famously came close to winning both the US Open and the US PGA Championship on several occasions; his failure to do so left him saddled with the tag as the best player to have never won a major.

Although Montgomerie's form has fluctuated in recent times, his love of the Composite Course at the Hong Kong Golf Club means he has a very realistic chance of ending his title drought this week.

"You have to work the ball at Fanling and that suits me more than the long, modern courses," he says.

    Jos Mara Olazbal Spain

It is with great pride and no small degree of excitement that the UBS Hong Kong Open welcomes back one of the true legends of the game.

As a two-time major winner and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Jos Mara Olazbal really needs little introduction. But it pays to once again reflect on what the now 45-year-old has achieved over his career just to remind ourselves of his lasting legacy.

It is, of course, his victories at the 1994 and 1999 Masters that puts Olazbal among the golfing greats, but there have been 31 victories in total around the world too including his famous victory at the 2001 Hong Kong Open, where he hit one of the best shots in the tournament's history to birdie the last hole and win by one.

Olazbal first made a name for himself when, at the age of 18, he won the British Amateur Championship in 1985. By 20 he had already finished second in the European Tour's Order of Merit and from there he set out to conquer the golf courses of the world.

2012 promises to be another milestone year for the likeable Spaniard. After excelling in the Ryder Cup as a player, Olazbal will captain the European team at Medinah next year when they defend the Cup against the United States.

The Championship Course Measuring a shade over 6,00 yards, the par-0 Composite Course at Fanling may

be considered short by modern standards but that doesn't make it a pushover by

any stretch of the imagination. This year sees a slight change to the championship

routing, with the addition of a new par - the 1th - coming into play.

Maybe one of the toughest opening holes in tournament golf, this is as a par 5 for the club members but plays as a long par 4 during the UBS Hong Kong Open. The drive is crucial. With a narrow left-to-right sloping fairway, many players opt for a three-wood from the tee. It is imperative to avoid the bunker on the left side, which has claimed many victims over the years. The second shot, too, has its difficulties. Unless youre in perfect shape down the right side of the fairway, the approach to the green has to be hit over the trees which flank the entire left side. A water hazard short and right of the green shouldnt really be in play, but the greenside bunker most certainly is. Any player at the Open is delighted to start with a par at the first.

The first of only two par 5s on the course, the second (which played as the third hole in previous Opens) is a good opportunity to get into red numbers. Many players opt to use an iron or three-wood off the elevated tee (from where you can see the tower blocks of Sheung Shui), which makes this a true three-shot hole. The aggressive player who hits driver will have the option of going for the green in two, but its not a particularly straightforward second shot. The green sits diagonally to the player and with the water on the left very much in play; it takes a brave man to try to thread his fairway wood or long iron on to the front right portion of the putting surface. Not a gimme birdie, but certainly a hole where players will look to pick up shots.

This is also one of the best viewing spots on the course. Spectators standing behind the green can also watch the action on the 18th green and see players tee off on the third.

A short, blind par 4, this hole is potentially drivable although that option is only

recommended if the conditions are soft; when the course is playing hard and fast, as it usually does

during the UBS Hong Kong Open, the very real danger of a driver or three-wood shot bounding

into trouble means the majority of pros will lay up short of the fairway bunkers with a five-

or six-iron and wedge it on from there.

The green is cleverly designed and is long but narrow, which can bring the three greenside bunkers into play. However, given the holes length and the players skills with the short

irons, theyll be disappointed if they dont birdie this hole at least twice over the four days.

The fourth is perhaps the best short hole on the course and certainly the most difficult. Played across a valley to a raised green, most of the pros will be hitting a five- or six-iron from the tee. Its not so much the length of the hole but the size and the firmness of the green that causes most of the problems here. The small putting surface features two tiers and when the pin is cut on the lower front portion it makes getting within birdie range extremely taxing. Any tee shot that misses the green translates into a very tough up and down. This is especially the case from the front right bunkers, which are two of the deepest on the course.

Any pro playing this hole in level par for the week will be ahead of the majority of the field.

This is a beautiful par 4 with a mountain backdrop. Bunkers in front and to the side

of the landing area provide a visually defined tee shot, although the longer hitters should be able to fly them all if the wind is helping.

The approach is what really tests the players, as the green is narrow and slightly raised.

Anything missing it will leave a very difficult chip shot. Another factor: the swirling wind here and were on one of the highest points on the

course can lead to a lot of indecision when it comes to club selection. The fifth is a real classic.

The entire hole is flanked by lovely soft-bark gum trees, which provides a visually stunning tee shot and approach. Because of the width of the fairway, most players will hit a long iron or hybrid off the tee, although anything pulled off the tee brings the fairway bunkers and ditch beyond into play. Even from the fairway, players must ensure their second shots are short of the hole location, as this is one of the most pitched greens on the course. Despite its length, a par on the sixth is never bad.

Like the fourth, this is another very good par 3, which is suggested by the scoring average.

Featuring a fairly long but narrow green, players are delighted to find the putting

surface in one shot because anything missing the green results in an extremely difficult up-

and-down. The most common miss here is short, although underclubbing here will often

result in the ball running back down the steeply banked slope at the front of the green, which leaves a tricky chip. A birdie here is a bonus.

Consistently the most difficult hole on the course, the eighth is a sweeping dogleg left that many players will attack with a three-wood off the tee because of the very well placed fairway bunkers. However, this tends to result in a very lengthy second shot, one which must be played to an unreceptive and narrow green. Players hitting driver here had better be accurate; anything apart from the perfect tee shot here will mean playing from the trees that line the fairway or the sand.

Normally a par 5 for the members, this is the type of hole that can ruin many a good round in very short order. Four 4s on the eighth during the week will put any player way ahead of the field average.

The ninth is a great example of how the Composite Course has withstood the test of time. At only 367

yards it might look a pushover on paper, but players putting down the guard here do so at their peril.

In 2010 the tournament organisers moved the tee forward on the weekend to entice many of the

players into going for the green with their drives. Graeme McDowell and John Daly were among the

players who successfully did so, with the former recording a brilliant eagle in the third round.

An exciting one for both players and spectators alike, the ninth could prove a pivotal hole on Sunday.

The 10th is a good, strong straightaway par 4, and one of the best driving holes on the course. Its imperative to hit the fairway here as the green which is the longest on the course at nearly 100 feet rarely holds shots coming out of the rough.

Out of Bounds down both sides of the hole seriously punishes wayward drivers, and while the landing area is generous, longer hitters have the advantage because the hole often plays into the wind.

A hole that has only been used in recent editions of the UBS Hong Kong Open, the 11th features a small green protected by a pond at the front and a tiny

but potentially deadly pot bunker on the right.

While players are only coming in with wedges and nine-irons from the slightly elevated tee,

the size of the putting surface and the swirling Fanling wind can make this a tricky proposition.

Not that Simon Dyson found the hole too taxing at last years event. The Englishman's tee shot in

the first round pitched two feet before the flag before disappearing into the bottom of the cup!

The second of only two par fives on the Composite Course and the one that all the pros are looking to birdie. Reachable by the vast majority of the field, the wide fairway and relatively short yardage here means that many eagles will be landed, but only if the fairway bunkers are avoided.

While all the players at the UBS Hong Kong Open look to the 12th to pick up a shot, the massive double green which is shared with the 17th can lead to plenty of long putts. Regardless, anyone not pencilling a four on the scorecard will be desperately disappointed. The easiest hole on the course, and with good reason.

The 13th is a lovely par 4 which forces players to hit their drives with a soft draw. Modern technology has made the fairway bunker at around 240 yards from the tee

obsolete, but the second shot which is played to a tiny raised green demands precision and touch. A large, deep bunker protects the front half of the

putting surface, while a grassy bank to the left makes getting up and down a tough proposition.

Despite this, however, most pros who get a good drive away will be looking to

score under par here during the week.

This is undoubtedly one of the best holes on the course and also one of the most beautiful. A ditch runs diagonally across the fairway from 260-280 yards from the tee, which makes a fairway wood or hybrid club the option for many pros. The best line is hard down the right side, which makes the approach shot a little shorter.

Always a difficult second shot to judge, the green, while flat and relatively large, is raised, making distance control all the more tricky.

Although the clubs members are generally delighted to make a par here, many of the pros will depart the green with red on their card.

Making its debut at the UBS Hong Kong Open, this remodelled par 3 (which plays as the 17th hole on the New Course) was designed by Martin Hawtree

and provides a sterner challenge than the old second hole that it replaced on the Open scorecard.

Featuring a contoured green surrounded on three sides by deep bunkers, the 180-yard hole will mostly

likely play as a six- or seven-iron for the players.

Hawtree has plenty of experience in the art of remodelling holes for big tournaments he has worked on many classic British links courses in

preparation for hosting the Open Championship.

The tee shot on this slightly downhill dogleg hole right is blind and many first-time players at the UBS Hong Kong Open often have difficulty picking the correct line. You really cant see much from the tee at all trees, shrubbery and a hill mask the fairway beyond.

Ideally, you need to hit a nice high fade, keeping as close to the right hand trees as possible. Good drives will catch the down slope of what is actually a pretty wide landing area, leaving only a wedge or nine-iron approach. Left off the tee here is definitely not the place to be. The rough down that side is some of the thickest on the course. Likewise, too far right and youll be blocked out by yet more large trees.

Troublesome pin positions on the back-to-front sloping green include the back right and left locations. Many of the birdies made at this hole will come when the hole is cut on the front portion of the putting surface.

The fairway on the 17th is generous, but the pros cant hit driver off the tee here because of the ditch

that crosses the fairway at the 290 yard mark.

While its never really a long shot in, the approach is always tricky to judge because the green sits

above the player, meaning the bottom of the flagstick is hidden. This can lead to a lot of head

scratching when it comes to club selection.

The very large putting surface the 17th and 12th share a double green, which is something of

a rarity in Asian golf features plenty of subtle breaks and allows a variety of pin positions.

Given the holes length and wide landing area, the pros will be looking to pick up a shot here

before heading to the famous 18th.

The 18th may be one of the best finishing holes in all of golf and the drama that has unfolded over the years at the UBS Hong Kong Open is testament to that.

The tee shot will have all the players in contention come Sunday quaking in their softspikes. Any shots missed left or right will mean a sideways chip back to the fairway unless, of course, youre Lin Wen-tang or Rory McIlroy, whose escapes during the play-off in 2008 still beggar belief.

If you do find the narrow fairway off the tee, the job is far from over, with a second shot over water to a green guarded by bunkers at the front, back and right.

The 18th always provides a grandstand finish, so be sure to get a good position in order to catch all the action.

    2011 European Tour Winners

Fantastic Five: Rory McIlroy made it five major wins in a row for European Tour members following his US Open triumph at Congressional in June. McIlroy's brilliance came after major victories by Charl Schwartzel (Masters), Martin Kaymer (US PGA), Louis Oosthuizen (Open Championship) and Graeme McDowell (US Open). Three weeks later, Darren Clarke added to the tally thanks to his win at the Open Championship at Royal St George's.
